MUODONVAIHDOS
Pojan kaarnalaiva jäi satamaan,
kun tuli myöhäinen ilta,
kun äiti reipasta laivuriaan
jo huuteli portahilta.
Kas aamulla rannassa ollutkaan
ei poikasen kaarnapriki —
mut yöllä lahdelle uinut on
uus pursi, musta kuin piki.
Sen kyljet aaltoja himoitsee,
sen ruori rautaista kättä,
se ankkuriketjua tempoilee
veen tyventä ymmärtämättä.
Jää hyvästi, manner synnyinmaan!
Meit’ aallot vihreät kantaa
yli nousevan myrskyn kauas pois
päin tuntematonta rantaa.
Kun aavalle päästään, palatakaan
ei näitä rantoja liki —
meren syvimpään kuiluun haudataan
tää pursi musta kuin piki.
I
KEHTOLAULU SYDÄMELLE
Nukahda, sydän rinnassain,
vuoteelle pumpulipurren;
maailman teiltä kauan sain
sinua varrota surren.
Katkoit kerran jo kapalovyös,
halasit hyrskyistä merta.
Mahtava olikin sankarityösi
pisaran vuodatit verta.
Onneksi sentään kyllästyit
kammottavaisiin sotiin,
juutalaiselle miekkas myit,
palasit kiltisti kotiin.
Nukahda, tuhlaajapoikani,
iäksi tällä erää,
lämmin on pumpuli älläsi,
nukahda, äläkä herää!
MYRSKYN JÄRKEEN
Raukeat purjeet ja musta vesi,
purren pohjalla vainaa.
Ulappa, kylmille rinnoillesi
suo hänen poskensa painaa!
Poian nuoren sa lahdelmalta
syliisi houkutit kerta,
aallonharjalta korkealta
näki hän aavaakin merta.
Miks sinä luontos taltutit, meri,
villistä ylpeydestä?
Hyrskyjen hurmaan jo tottunut veri
tyyntä ei enää kestä.
RUNOILIJAN HAUDALLA
Jo päätit retkesi ajallisen,
olet haudassa onnellisesti;
olit nuori, mut elämäs syntinen
jo liiankin kauan kesti.
Sinä kalliin lahjan ylhäältä sait,
mut uhmasit Herran teitä;
elit riettaasti, määrättä joit ja nait
ja rakastit öykkäreitä.
Olit kutsumukseesi kelvoton,
kuin itsekin tunnustit toki;
moni jäänyt on halpaan arvohon,
vaikk’ elää puhtaasti koki.
Joku hempeämieli tyttönen
vois kumpuas pyhänä pitää,
siks kamartukoon se umpehen
— pahe muutenkin kylliksi itää.
Et luonut silmiäs korkeuteen,
sua houkutti maa ja sen saasta,
siks sielus, vangittu ruumiiseen,
ei koskaan erkane maasta.
VÄSYMYS
Vaikeneva korpimaa,
kuule viime pyyntöni:
väsynyt on poikasi,
helmaas kuolla halajaa.
Suo mun kerran viimeisen
nähdä päivän väikkyvän
yllä nummen vihreän,
yllä honganlatvojen.
Kylkeen paaden ruskean
pääni suo mun laskea,
kääri poikas nukkuva
syysyön tummaan vaippahan.
Yöllä mustiin metsihin
ensilumi lankeaa,
korpi verhoo vainajaa
paariliinoin hohtavin.
Jänönpoika ihmeissään
talviaamuun noustuaan
hiljaa kohoo katsomaan
kalvennutta veljeään.
PAKOLAINEN
Vaieten kuulet, matkamies,
koiran haukunnan järven takaa.
Kotisi puuntaa, jo päättyy ties,
miks olet synkkä ja vakaa?
Tiedät, ken koiraasi tanssittaa,
riemunäänistä kummut kajaa.
Kaipaus sinne, ulapan taa,
sumua silmiisi ajaa.
Muistelet kerran lähtenees
onnenpäivien rauhaa pakoon.
Otsasi, muinoin kirkas ja sees,
murheesta käynyt on vakoon.
Haukunnan kuulet, sauhun näät,
juosten rientäisi armas syliin.
Tuskasi kätket ja tielle jäät
ohitse painuen kyliin.
SANKARIUNELMA
Kun lapsi olit, kirjoistasi luit,
kuink’ urotöihin syöksyy sankarit;
löit, kirjat lattiaan ja innostuit:
maapallon voittajana kuolisit!
Et olis uskonut sa varmaankaan,
jos silloin ennustettu toisin ois:
et nouse valtaan etkä kunniaan,
on uskos kariseva vitkaan pois.
Et ole Caesar etkä Robinson,
et kirjais sankareista yksikään;
saat kestää uneksijan kohtalon,
— sua niinkuin kulkukoiraa säälitään.
II
TARINA SUURESTA LUUDASTA
Parantaja huusi:
»Kuulkaat aate uusi,
miten pestä saasta
rakkaast’ isänmaasta.
Tehdään suuri luuta,
jolla ilman muuta
voidaan mereen laasta
mätä tästä maasta.»
Näin hän huus ja näki,
kuinka aatteenväki
kooten korren kekoon
nousi luudan tekoon.
Ihmeekseen hän huomas:
joukoss’ oli Tuomas,
oli myöskin Juudas
kädessänsä luudas.
Vihdoin valmis juuri
oli luuta suuri,
jolla maa nyt pestä
puhtaaks vääryydestä.
Silloin, katsos kummaa!
näätkö ihmissummaa,
joka ryntää tuolta
kohden varsipuolta!
Juosten rientää ylväät
yhteiskunnan pylväät
— suurin konna, varas
kilvassa on paras.
Vihdoin koko kansa
seisten paikoillansa
katsoo kenet laasta
voisi ulos maasta.
Profeetta sen nähden
pahuutensa tähden
astuu luudan eteen,
laastaan maalta veteen.
RUNONIEKAN PALUU
Runoilija kuoltuaan
joutui jälleen päälle maan,
seuraan, joka arvokkaasti
taiteen alkusynnyt haasti.
Kumma paikka! Eikös vain
joku ääntään vavistain
_hänen_ runoansa siellä
lausahtele juhlamieliä.
Seurakunta kyynelöi,
käsiänsä yhteen löi
nautiskellen tunnelmasta:
siinä hieno runo vasta!
Runoilija häpeissään,
katsoin huonoks runon tään,
ylistystä sietämättä
tyynnytellen nostaa kättä:
»Milloinkaan ei kuulla saa
virttä tämän kurjempaa;
runohan on aivan mätä,
itsekin mies häpeis tätä.»
Silloin naiset kauliistui,
herrat nyrkkiänsä pui:
»Kuulkaat, taidetta hän pilkkaa!
Kaikki kateutta silkkaa!
Tietääkö hän, ketä rienaa!
Omat kannuksesi tienaa!
Painu, poika, helvettiin!!»
— Runoilija teki niin.
HIENO MIES RUNOTARTEN SEURASSA
... Menestystäs varten
vielä varoitan:
eessä runotarten
ollos gentleman.
Hieno käytös varmaan
lunastukses on —
hurmaa Muusan armaan
poika nuhteeton.
Tulkaat ystäviksi
pyyteet unhoittain;
lempes olkoon siksi
platoonista vain.
Jääköön alkohooli
pöydästänne pois:
suoniis kuuma booli
veren nostaa vois,
päissäs uskaltaisit
neitsytkammioon;
runolapsen saisit
— Herra varjelkoon!
III
LAPSI JA KISSA
Pikkuiset kissanpoikaset
pihalla leikitsit, iloiset.
Hyvä oli niiden olla
vihreellä nurmikolla.
Vieressä poikanen kutripää
katseli kisujen leikintää
aatoksin polttavaisin:
Oi jospa syliini saisin!
Perheestä mustimman, pienimmän
äkisti syliinsä vangitsi hän
hyväillen mirriparkaa
väriseväistä ja arkaa.
Tuskassa palavan hellyyden
hampaansa painoi hän korvaan sen —
valittain mirri pakoon
juoksi pinojen rakoon.
Voi sua pikkuinen julmuri,
surua saa sinust’ äitisi.
Sydänt’ ei sulle luotu
— vai liekö liiaks suotu?
SAXOPHON
Muistatko vielä Valenciaa?
Tänään et sitä kuulla saa,
mutta kauniimmin vielä soi
Alaska, Bombay ja Billy boy.
Aavikolla karavaanitie
kohden kaukaista Mekkaa vie,
illoin shakaalit kuulla voi,
kuinka teltoista huilut soi.
Sumusta Jäämeren myrskysään
laiva päässyt on etelään,
taivaanrannass’ on aamunkoi,
merimiesten riemukas laulu soi.
Kansa saaren merellisen
paisteessa nuotion loimujen
hillittömästi karkeloi,
yössä rummut ja banjot soi.
Kautta viiden mantereen,
lävitse vuorten, alitse veen,
veturin silmät ne salamoi,
alati kiskojen jyske soi.
Kaulaltas pölyä puuterin
hengitän suin ja sieraimin,
kuuletko, kuinka tän’ yönä soi
Alaska, Bombay ja Billy boy!
PYHÄ YRJÄNÄ JA LOHIKÄÄRME
Himojen käärme hirmuinen
neitsettä uhriksi vaatien
portilla linnan on juuri,
hätä ja parku on suuri.
Ihana prinsessa vuoteellaan
väristen itkee kauhuissaan,
kammion ikkunoista
aurinko armas ei loista.
Portaille silloin lennähtää
ratsain Yrjänä hurjapää
syöksyen ilman muuta
vasten kuolaista suuta.
Kuulitko, pikkuinen prinsessain,
kuulitko kauhusta vavahtain
raivosta karjuvan pedon
viimeisen hengenvedon?
Saranat murtuvat — rauhoitu oi,
kultakannukset ovelta soi!
Suloiset silmäsi nosta,
iloitse auringosta!
SINISELLE VUORELLE
Auringon noustessa kimmeltäin
rinnoille kukkivan maan,
lähdemme sinistä vuorta päin
kahden vaeltamaan.
Niinkuin virrassa tuulien
kevyt on lintujen tie,
ylitse kasteisten kenttien
polku siintävä vie.
Hennot jalkasi rotkoihin
kesken uupua voi —
vuoripurona kuitenkin
solisten naurus soi.
Pedot ja kuumuus erämaan
ehkä jo voimani vei —
salama silmäini milloinkaan
viereltäs sammu ei.
Etäällä, etääll’ on määränpää,
kiiruhdettava on;
matkalla kerran yllättää
pimeys armoton.
Kukkanurmelle sylikkäin
nukumme silloin pois —
että sinistä vuorta päin
aamulla nousta vois.
UNI KEVÄÄSTÄ
Hymyilet vuoteellas, uneksien
kevätauringon maasta.
Sumussa harmaitten päivien
noin et säteillen haasta.
— Kummun kiireelle juossut on
pieni tyttönen juuri,
edessä maa niin kaunis on,
maa niin kaunis ja suuri.
Tuuli tukkaasi hulmuttain
varttas hentoa halaa,
sylistä vihreitten, tuoksuvain
kevätmetsäin se palaa.
Multa laaksoissa vihannoi
kukat kuohuna nostain,
kiurun huumaava liverrys soi
taivaan sinestä jostain.
— Syvään hengität, kuuntelet
silmäs suljettuasi —
julmaa hellyyttä muista et
hurjan rakastajasi.
HARHAKUVA
Ota pääni käsiis ja katso
mua suoraan silmihin,
— on edessäs kurja pajatso
yhä silmin viattomin.
En sentään sun pettyvän sallis,
näköharhaan uskovan näin:
oman puhtaan kuvasi, kallis,
vain näät minun silmissäin.
En sieluni pohjaan asti
ole katsonut itsekään —
sen partaalle useimmasti
kuin horkassa väristen jään.
Näät täynnänsä perkeleitä
on pimennot kuilun sen,
— en sinne sinua heitä,
laps hyvien enkelten!
HILJAINEN VIERAS
Olin houreesta herännyt juuri
ja raotin silmiäin
ja pihalla omenapuiden
lumivalkeina kukkivan näin.
Sinä sisälle astuit hiljaa
ja sävähdit kyyneliin
ja juoksit vuoteeni ääreen
pääs painaen peitteisiin.
Sua katselin neuvotonna,
sun tukkaas käteni vein
ja kysyin, miksikäs itkee
mun kallis tyttösein.
Kätes ympärilleni kietoin
sinä rajummin nyyhkytit vain
— syyn itkuusi hillittömään
näin sivulle katsahtain:
Yön varjossa hiljainen vieras
oli astunut huoneeseen,
näin mustassa viitassansa
hänen nurkkaan kumartuneen.
Olin hänestä kuvia nähnyt
ja lukenut paljonkin,
mut toinen hän oli kuin ennen
hänet mielessä kuvittelin.
Sinä itkien kammosit häntä;
minä yhtään peljännyt en, —
nimes rakkaan kuiskaten lausuin
mä kerran viimeisen.
YÖ NUMMELLA
Ylitse hehkuvan täydenkuun
pilvilaumoja myrskyt ajaa,
syksyisten metsien huokailuun
synkästi nummi vastaan kajaa.
Latva korkeinna huojuvan puun
varjollansa uhkaa meitä,
paisteessa pilvien saartavan kuun
suutelen silmiäs säikähtyneitä.
Kuuletko, kuinka villisti soi
myrskynäänet mustasta yöstä!
Pelkäätkö, että metsä voi
ylitsemme ryskyen syöstä?
Pilvet peittävät äkkiä kuun,
pimeys kohisten kohtaa maata,
juurella myrskyn pieksämän puun
mikään ei meitä tuhota saata.
LAULU JUUDITISTA
Rannalla kohisevalla
kuljimme rinnakkain,
keltaisten lehtien alla
sinulta kuulla sain,
että jo sydämes annoit
pantiksi rakkauden:
ristiä rinnallas kannoit,
morsian Kristuksen.
Sinusta erkanin silloin,
korska ja loukattu mies;
kuinka ma kärsin silloin,
taivas yksin ties.
Vaelsin vihassa Herran
hurjuutta harjoittain,
kunnes sinusta kerran
mailmalla kuulla sain:
Maahisen lempensä tähden
riutui hän hiljalleen,
unta sinusta nähden
nousi hän kirkkauteen.
SADUNKERRONTA
Pyysit, että kertoisin
sinulle sadun kaunihin
kaukaisesta etelänmaasta
ja prinssistä urhokkaasta.
Kerroin satuni kauneimman,
kuinka pikkuisen prinsessan
luolaansa hirmuinen peikko vei
— ei prinssi koskaan saapunut ei.
IV
MUSTA PYÖRRE
Pilvenpyörre musta
hornaa kohden vei,
yhtään huokausta
jälkeeni noussut ei.
Äkkiä taivaanpinta
halkes jyrähtäin:
kolme ihaninta
enkeliä näin.
Armo taivaan Herran
heill’ on muassaan —
jokaisen heistä kerran
tunsin päällä maan.
Heistä viattomimman
vuoteessa kuristin:
vallassa hurjan vimman
häntä rakastin.
Toisen heistä kerta
puukolla surmasin:
kuumaa ja punaista verta
hänessä rakastin.
Kolmannen ikkunasta
katuun murskasin —
kuoleman jälkeen vasta
häntä rakastin.
Taivaan siunausta
vastaan ottanut en;
pilvenpyörre musta
löi yli silmien.
PYRAMIIDI
Pyramiidin alta
huipulla nään sun;
porras portahalta
noustava on mun.
Päivä polttaa, mutta
jäätä vihmoo yö;
selkää paahtunutta
hietamyrskyt lyö.
Matkan viime tuuma
kerran taakse jää —
hietapyörre kuuma
silloin yllättää,
meidät korkealta
syösten nopeaan
porras portahalta
syliin erämaan.
KOHTALO
(Annie Vivantin mukaan)
Hän virkkoi: »Kuinka toinen oot kuin ennen!
Noin riutuneena, kasvoin kuihtuvin.
Kai kärsinyt sä olet vuotten mennen?»
— Sua rakastan — ma vastasin.
Hän sanoi hymyillen: »Sä voitko muistaa
sen lemmenhurman kuuman, lyhyen?
Kuin nopsaan saattoivatkin päivät luistaa,
yöt haihtua sen autuuden!
Ja muistatko mun uuden lemmittyni;
ja oman armaas, mua rakkaamman?
Mua huules pettivät, sua hyväilyni.»
Ma vastasin: — Sua rakastan! —
Hän lausui: »Näkemiin! Tien, jota kuljen,
sun tiestäs uskon iäks eroovan.
Sun ehkä helvetissä syliin suljen!»
Ma sanoin vain: — Sua rakastan! —
Hän sanoi: »Demoonin nään hurjistuneen,
pois, rietas hornanhenki, takaisin!
Ma hautaan iankaikkisuneen
sun kurjuutes ja minunkin.
Oi Unhoituksen harmaa painajainen,
tää kuule pyyntö sielun anovan:
pois riistä sydämestäni tuo nainen!»
Ma sanoin vain: — Sua rakastan! —
Hän katsoi väristen — ja väkevästi
maa lyödä aikoi, kättään kohottain.
Se sattui poskelle — mut lempeästi.
— Sua rakastan! — ma sanoin vain.

Nyt hiljaa vaellamme rinnatusten
me suoraa tietä varman turmion,
Lyö silmäin lieska läpi huokausten:
se intohimon tulta on.
Hän joskus sanoo mulle kauhuissansa:
— »Nään yhä riutuvan sun, kasvos kuihtuvan!»
Ma nyökkään, liekehtien katseestansa,
ja kuiskaan vain: — Sua rakastan. —
KIRJE
Ympärillä sydänyö,
mielessäni tihutyö,
määrää vailla samosin
halki tyhjän kaupungin.
Tuska täytti sydämen,
mitään nähnyt en.
Uupuneena, vavisten
kotiin eksyin pakotieltä,
kynän käteen löysin sieltä,
sitten sormin liekehtivin
kirjeen poikki piirsin rivin:
»Portto kurja oletkin,
kerran sinua rakastin!»
Niinkuin tulikiemurat
sanat silmiin loistivat.
— Aamusella havahduin
hehkuun ensi säteen;
pöytää vasten nukkunut
olin kirje käteen.
Julmat sanat vaiti luin,
nimen peitin suudelmin —
soppeen pöytälaatikon
kirje luisti piilohon.
VARJOT
Kuun paisteessa varjolleni
olen mustasukkainen,
kun lumella varjoos se sulaa,
sitä synkästi katselen.
Voin suudella janoista suutas
ja ihoas polttavaa,
sun ihanan, tuoksuvan ruumiis
voin sadasti valloittaa —
se liian vähän on mulle!
Minä repiä tahdon sun,
minä tahdon yhtyä sinuun
kuin varjoni varjoos sun.
KIUSATTU
Maan tyttäristä ei yksikään
saa pojasta rippilasta,
sanat sammuvat sylihin lempeään
ens suukosta juovuttavasta.

vain petoa, nälkäistä sutta,
mä elätän rinnassain.
Monen nuoren gasellin lihan
se naulitsi riemuiten —
minä vallassa pelon ja vihan
sitä turhaan hillitsen.
Saan julmasti tuntea, että
sen eess’ olen voimaton:
mut ei juo janoonsa vettä,
ken vereen tottunut on.
En kestä, sen kerran ammun
tai puukolla surmaan sen —
jos itsekin silloin sammun,
tuta saanhan vapauden.
RUKOUS
Taivaan-Isäni laupias,
kuule poikaasi armossas:
lähetä enkelis päälle maan
sieluni synnistä Vapahtamaan!
Lapsenmielellä taida en
kättä ristiä puolees sun —
unia puhtaan lapsuuden
koskaan et sallinut nähdä mun.
Mieheks syntyä tänne sain —
kehdosta kerran noustuain
elämästäni muistan vain
tuskat himojen polttavain.
— Säästä, Isäni, enkelis,
ettet poikaasi viettelis
valkeita siipiä tahraamaan
hillittömässä himossaan!
KADULLA
Kadull’ on sakea lokakuun yö,
seiniä vasten räntä lyö;
äkisti pimeys aukeaa,
etäältä silmiini leimahtaa
veriset kirjaimet: _Lihaa_.
Pimeys, sokaise silmäni!
Jumala, sammuta järkeni!
etten muistaisi, kuinka on
paahteessa hekkuman nautinnon
ruoskittu, runneltu lihaa —
sielu ruumista vihaa!
AURINGON POLTTAMAT MERIMIEHET

Vei kerran meri heidät. He koskaan eivät palaa.
Jos palaavatkin, heidänkö me näämme saapuvan?
Jos meri heidät antaa, se polttaa heidät ensin —
