Sa turhaan tanssit ja teutaroit:
käsi ohjissa pysyy.
Mun ilmaan temmata maasta voit,
ja se sittenkin pysyy.
Saat sieltä paiskata kenttään taas:
sen selkäni kestää,
— ja kerta ponnahdan satulaas,
et voi sitä estää.
Olet silloin myrskynä raivoten
maanpiirien kauhu;
jää jälkeen tietäsi merkiten
tulenlieska ja sauhu.
Sa synnyit poikana aavikon
ja prinssinä kuolet.
Osas aina saaliista runsas on
ja maineesta puolet.
Kun kerran kuoltua kuninkaan
mun on kruunu ja valta,
yli salmen syöksyen Aasiaan
rajat särjemme alta!

I
TYRMÄSTÄ TULLUT.
Ne löivät mun kahlerautoihin
kuin murhaajan vaarallisimman,
ja kytkivät lyijyliiveihin
hävittääksensä vastustusvimman.
Yöt päivät käsiä vääntelin,
purin hampaani hajalle rautaan;
Pian kauhusta suunnilta huomasin:
elävält' olin heitetty hautaan.
En huudoksi tuskaa pusertanut,
en, vaikka se aivoja särki.
Oli kielikin kitaan kuivanut,
ja päässä jo sumeni järki.
Kai kuolleeksi vihdoin luulivat,
kun olin vain nahkaa ja luuta,
ja tunkion pieleen potkivat
kuin raadon mun ilman muuta.
Eräs lumppuri luita kootessaan
se minutkin kelkkaansa heitti,
vei kotiinsa, hoiteli vuoteessaan,
teki kääreet ja lääkkeet keitti.
Tulin terveeksi, taas olen voimakas
ja ilosta hulluna aivan,
taas sappea täynnä ja raivokas,
oi kiitos vankilan: vaivan!
KALEERIORJA.
Sata vuotta varmaan olen airoani temponut,
ja päiväkin on iäisyys.
Joka ilta olen valtamerta rukoillut:
lyö, sulje laiva syleilyys!
Meren pohjahietikolla laivat lukemattomat
jo levon ovat löytäneet,
mutta meitä vesivuoret yllään kantavat,
ja lukkoon käyvät syvänteet.
Petolauma läähättäen kahleissansa kiemurtaa;
pedot julmemmat on irrallaan —
ruoskansiima silmilleni viuhuin lankeaa
— ja joka isku muistetaan!
Tunnenhan jo miten alla kansilaudat lahoaa,
kun suolalaineet yli lyö;
näänhän kuinka nilkassani vanne punertaa:
sen sydäntä jo ruoste syö.
Herra taivaan auringon tai herra maan ja helvetin:
taas tahdon jäädä elämään!
Sata piinavuotta kestän kyllä vieläkin,
vain että kerran aamun nään.
VIIMEINEN JUNA.
Sillalla turhaan riuhtoilin
käsistä julmain vartijain;
kalloin irvistelevin
nauroivat he mulle vain
seuraamaan mun pakottain.
— Mustine vankivaunuineen
matkustajaansa vartosi juna,
kanssani yöhön syöstäkseen
kummituksena vainottuna.
Joukosta saaton nyyhkivän
juoksi enkeli syliini,
armoa mulle rukoili;
sitten seurata pyysi hän,
mutta sivulle viskattiin —.
Vaunuun vietynä kalteriin
ponnahdin aukkoa murtamaan,
hervoten takaisin lattiaan,
korvissa viiltävä vihellys,
suonissa kiskojen jyskytys...
Nousemaan olen voimaton,
mutta paisteessa kuutamon
takana ikkunarautojen
nelistävän nään pilvien
— kunnes sokeus yllättää.
Vauhkona, ilman käskijää
veturi tyhjänä lennähtää
elämän portista raivopäin,
seinään lopulta räiskähtäin —.
TIIKERIN HÄKISSÄ.
Havahdut, kauhistuen huomaat vasta nyt:
on kohtalo sun pedon häkkiin heittänyt,
sait tiikerille syntymästäs asti
kuin veljelles sä jakaa hyväilyt
— nyt hyppyyn kyyristyy se uhkaavasti.
Et pelkää sentään, ruoskan vartta kouraat vain,
päin suuta sattuu solmupiiska viuhahtain,
ja peto kimpoo häkin seinää vasten;
rajusti hampain ristikoita ravistain
se pyrkii alta iskuin voimakasten.
Mut turhat ovat ponnistukset tiikerin;
ja häkin nurkkaan muristen se painuukin.
— Ei voitostas sun ollut suurta vaivaa.
Mut öin ja päivin katso julmiin silmihin,
tai peto kynsin terävin sun maahan raivaa!
AD ASTRA.
Jo juoksee liekki sihisten
kyyn kiemuroivan lailla.
pian dynamiittipitkäinen
lyö tulta taivaanmailla.
Miesjoukko kaukaa tähystää
sen sytyttäjän työtä.
He näkevät: hän sinne jää,
kuin aikois mennä myötä.
Niin, ilmaan nousta aikookin
hän kerran näinkin tavoin!
Ei päästä muuten pilvihin,
tää ainut tie on avoin.
Hän monta kertaa noussut on,
mut aina maahan lyöty —
ei sentään vielä toivoton,
ei viime keino myöty —
Ja vuoren kylki halkeaa,
kun panos syttyy, laukee.
Kivisuihku pilviin singahtaa
— ja kallioille raukee...
SOKEA.
Sokeat silmät pilviin päin
ja kepillä vaarat torjuen
hän poikki kadun vilinäin
nyt astuu hiukan horjuen.
Ja katso: auto yksikään
ei viistä häntä pyörillään.
Nyt uskon, että väkevin
on uskallus sen sokean:
hän varmaan silmin näkevin
ois saanut koiran kuoleman.
KARUSELLI.
Karuselli pyörii, ja mukana sen
kierrämme alati jokainen;
nousimme matkaan jo pienoisina
soiton ja soihtujen huikaisemina.
Kaikk' ovat allensa saanehet
liukuvat, kiikkuvat alukset;
ratsuja siinä on runsahasti,
kilpikonnasta kameliin asti.
Etanan avuton matelutie
liiankin rohkea monesta lie,
— kiikunpa katossa häilähtäväisen
vauhti on riemuja huimapäisen.
Itse kun hevosenvarsan ma sain,
säikähdin silmäni ummistain:
jättäen muut tahi polkien lakoon
hurjana pyrki se altani pakoon.
Vuotten viertyä suitsissa on
kätteni voima jo vankkumaton;
mutta kun sais hepo tuiskuna mennä
eivät sen kaviot ruoskatta lennä.
Armotta ratsuni kuitenkin saa
viimeiset voimansa ponnistaa;
kuoloon asti sen uhkana ovat
syvällä kyljissä kannukset kovat.
KUVANVEISTÄJÄ.
Pihamaalla, suojassa vaahterain
mies seisoi patsasta kalskuttain;
kiven kyljestä siruset suihkivat
ja seinät iskuista kajahtivat.
Ei portille nähdä hän ehtinyt,
johon koulutiellänsä eksynyt
joku nuorimies oli arkaillen
kera kirjataakkansa ainaisen.
Tämä hetki on pojalle synnin syy:
hän aamusaarnasta myöhästyy,
— mutta kuulla graniitin soittavan
saa laulun hän virsiä kauniimman.
Ja hän kouluun asteli uljain päin,
omantuntonsa mykäksi tyynnyttäin:
se jäykkä ja paatunut olla saa,
joka tahtoo vuoria liikuttaa!
SATU.
Kas jättipoikapa emoltaan
lelun ihanan oudon ja kummallisen,
maapallon pienoisen lahjaksi sai,
sitä pyöritti, kieputti sormissaan
ja katseli riemusta sädehtien,
Kuin timantti säihkyvän kaukaa se näytti,
mutta suurennuslasilla nähdä sai,
miten miljoonat ihmeet sen pintoja täytti,
ja huumaten nous siitä sieraimiin
meren tuoksua seoten puuteriin.
Ja korvaan kun painoi sen, kuulla voi,
miten hyristen, helisten hiljaa se soi.
Mut tuskinpa viikkoa vierinyt,
kun poikanen kävi jo miettimään,
miten selville saisi sen salaisuuden,
ja kun avaimenreikää ei löytänyt,
niin suuttui hän viimein ja äkeissään
haki leikkimiekkansa kirkkaan ja uuden,
maan ilmaan heitti ja halkaisi sen —
tulipisara tipahti kivettyen.
Mut tuoksutkin samassa katosivat,
valot sammuivat, sävelet kuolivat...
Ja poikanen puhkesi parkumaan,
oli järjettömästi hän lohduton,
vaikk' ollut ei miekassa naarmuakaan.
II
VAELTAJALLE.
Vapise, vaeltaja,
rannalla aavikon:
etääll' on toinen raja,
saavuttaa mahdoton.
Hietikon maininkeihin
tuhat on uupunut;
noussut ei kyyneleihin
tuskansa kuivunut.
Tukehdut hourailuusi,
vettä ei pisaraa.
Aurinko polttaa luusi,
tuhkasi samum saa.
TUSKAA.
Rintaan painuu hiljaa syöpyen
kipinöivä polttorauta
kohden sydäntäni liikkuen.
Hampaankiristys ei auta.
Armahtakaa, nopeasti painakaa
loppuun asti surmarauta!
sydän vaikeroiden vihdoin parahtaa.
— Parku, valitus ei auta.
HEIKKO SOTURI.
Hän jätti kalliin kotimaan,
niin uhmas sydäntään,
ja riensi kauas maailmaan
vain miekka kädessään.
Sai temmelteessä taistelun
jo voiton onnekkaan,
— kun näki laihon kaadetun
niin itki katkeraan.
Pois raivas tieltä ystävän,
ken näki kyynelet.
Yön tuskan jälkeen polki hän
taas surman askelet.
Sai töistään nimen peljätyn
ja sotakunnian;
vaan kaipas silmää lemmityn
ja kättä kantajan.
Kun kuoli, vietiin kammioon
hän tykinjyskehin,
vaikk' itkuvirsin kalmistoon
ois saatu kauniimmin.
YÖN YMPÄRÖIMÄ.
Yön piirin ympäröimä mies,
jää löytämättä paluuties.
Saat juosta itses uuvuksiin,
ei aukee polku näkyviin.
Yön sumun saarroksessa on
sun taisteluskin toivoton:
et tiedä, minne iskisit
ja kenet taistoon vaatisit.
Et tohdi enää rakastaa,
sun täytyy kaipuus unohtaa.
Vain kaukaa läpi huurujen
soi naisten nauru vaimeten.
Yö vaippojansa tihentää,
vain hetken päivä kimmeltää.
Et pysty enää mihinkään,
et enää edes itkemään.
JÄÄTYNYT.
Jäin pinnalle yksinäni uimaan;
jäävuori laivan upotti.
Käy navalta talvenhenki tuimaan.
Vain tuhtopuu on turvani.
On tyyni ja kylmä meri alla.
Yön haamut esiin liukuvat.
Ne kasvoni veteen painamalla
mun kohta tukehduttavat.
Jääseittejä syntyy ympärille.
Ne aamutuuleen särkyvät.
Ja pohjasta nousten näkyville
veen hirmut hiljaa väijyvät.
On tukkani kalisevaa jäätä.
On puku puuhun jäätynyt.
En omaksi tunne jalkopäätä,
ja käsi pois on kierinyt.
Jo silmiä kova huurre painaa;
en enää niitä auki saa.
Olen laudalle pelastunut vainaa.
Vain sydäntäni paleltaa.
PAINAJAISUNI.
Painajaisunta ma yöllä näin:
pölkyssä mestauskirveen,
vieressä ruumiini päättä näin
uhrina tuomion hirveen.
Pää oli nostettu seipääseen
ihmisten pilkattavaksi.
Huomasin kuoleman muuttaneen
ilmeeni inhoittavaksi.
Sukuni myöskin ja ystävät
joukosta löysin ne sieltä.
Muutamat silmänsä ristivät —
näky lie vaivannut mieltä.
Kukaan ei nimeltä maininnut,
surren ei muistellut kukaan:
jokainen oli mun tuntenut
elämän naamion mukaan.
KUUMEESSA.
Hiutaleet painuvat puoleen maan
keinuen raskaassa tahdissaan.
Kuumeesta kiiluvin silmin nään
nietosten häipyvän hämärään.
Himoitsen jotakin viileää —
päässäni polttaa ja jyskyttää,
sydän kuin pakahtuakseen lyö;
edess' on armoton piina-yö.
Aamuun asti en kestäne;
räjähdän, jollen ma pakene
liekkiä rinnasta hautaamaan
kinokseen kylmään ja valkeaan.
MATKALLA.
Pisarat pyörteinä ryöpyten
saartavat majaan miehen,
joka vain matkalle himoiten
tuijottaa ulos tiehen.
Erämaan taivalta kulkenut
aamusta iltaan asti
myrskyä pakoon on poikennut
leväten raukeasti.
Silloin taas hänet yllättää
entinen kaipaus salaa,
hereille nukkuja hätkähtää,
virraten voimansa palaa.
Koholle rintansa riehahtaa,
valveilla untaan hän jatkaa.
— Ovessa pitkään narahtaa:
myrskyssä kulkija matkaa.
KEVÄÄN MANAUS.
Kevät toipuen kolkuttaa
jo portille röyhkeänä.
Sitä sisään ei laskea saa!
Kevät saavu ei ystävänä.
Se ääneensä riemuitsee,
kun sisälle päässyt on kerran,
ja sylissään viettelee
minut, ruumiini ylvään herran.
Kevät täällä jos vallan saa,
minut haudata maahan saatte,
— ja vasta kun jäätyy maa,
taas haudasta vapahtakaatte.
HULLU NAURU.
Taas korvissani kajahtaa
se kamala, hullu nauru.
En missään siltä rauhaa saa.
Käy sielussani puistatus,
ja ihmeeksi ystäville
jää kesken ilonpurkaus.
Yöll' ensi kerran ääni se
mun yllätti kauan sitten.
Sen jälkeen uhraan kauhulle.
Jo sointu naurun kirotun
on omassa naurussani.
Se vähitellen valtaa mun.
III
PIRUNPOLSKA.
Älä vain nyt päätäsi nosta,
älä silmiäs avaa!
Pidä kiinni vain yhä tiukemmin!
Älä pelkää, en sieluja osta
enkä kavioin ravaa,
vaikk' onkin muotoni pyövelin.
Mun eivät keuhkoni siedä
tätä katkua savun,
joka peittää kaupungit ihmisten.
Kera tahdon sinutkin viedä
läpi sumun ja savun,
ja me nousemme hyrränä pyörien.
Sydän vasten sydäntä kuumaa
ylös portille taivaan,
säveleissä jättiläishaitarin.
— Tämä kierto liiaksi huumaa
ja helvetin vaivaan
vie suoraa päätä se kummankin.
HYPNOTISMUS.
Sen tiedät, kuka odottaa,
kun korvas soi.
Mun tahdot tyystin unohtaa,
et sitä voi.
Palavat silmät sielustas
ei käänny pois.
Et unta saada vuoteellas
nyt niiltä vois.
Sua tahtoni mun ympäröi,
sun masentaa;
sun sokeaksi ensin löi,
nyt taluttaa.
Sun luokseni ma pakotan,
jo tuletkin.
Sun herätän — ja uuvutan
taas suudelmin.
IKKUNA SUMUSSA.
Sade yöllistä katua räiskyttää.
En kellarinlasista mitään nää,
en armaani punaista ikkunaa
meren lahden toisella puolen;
talot korkeat edessä varjostaa.
Tänä yönä tuskaani kuolen.
— Maanjäristys seinät jos heittäis pois,
tai aukon jos ampua niihin vois!
Ei tapahdu ihmettä — myrsky vain
yöss' ulvoo takana ikkunain.
— — — —
Ovi auki ja lamput sammuksiin!
Ylös tikkaita pitkin kiivettiin
kuus kerrosta korkeammalle,
pihamaa katos jalkojen alle...
Olin katolle päässyt, kun luiskahdin —
käsin räystäästä kiinni ma tarrasin
ja siihen välille taivaan ja maan
jäin ees taas ilmassa kiikkumaan.
Ylös sentään itseni lopulta kiskoin,
sisiliskona harjalle kiipesin,
ja uupuneena, mut ehjin niskoin
savupiipun juurelle lysähdin.
Pois silmiltä pisarat puistaen
hain tuiketta kätköstä pimeyden —
vesi ryöppynä tulvaten sokaisi mun,
löi ylitse ruumiin sammutetun,
olin tahdoton, voimaton alla sen paineen,
alas vierähdin sylissä seuraavan laineen.
Löin pääni rajusti räystääseen,
katon muistan allani jyrisseen —.
VIHREÄT SILMÄT.
Sun silmäs suolantuoksuvat
ja merenvihreät
sokeiksi suutelen!
Näin pohjaan niiden silmien:
maat kaukaisimmat, oudoimmat,
maat merivirtain kiertämät
ja päivänpaahtamat.
Ja valtameren saaristoon
näin paratiisin puhjenneen;
sen aavaan rantahietikkoon
toi aalto vaahdon särkyneen,
ja tuuli päällä palmujen
soi uuvuttaen, viihtäen.
Mut tulivuoren tuima suu
sen saaren yli kumartuu
ja sauhupatsaan suitsuttaa.
Se kerran ilmaan ulvahtaa
ja laavavirroin kiehuvin
lyö kukkatarhat aaltoihin.
Siks' silmäs suolantuoksuvat
ja merenvihreät
sokeiksi, sokeiks' suutelen!
HAUTAPATSAS.
Mun kuoliaaksi purra
sa uhkasit ja surra
kuin koira ulvoen
mun haudallani lumen peittämällä.
Vaan kuusi jalkaa vahva maa,
mun arkkuani pusertaa,
ja haudallani huutos on
vain virvaliekki levoton.
Ei liikuta se vainajaa.
Mut tähtiyössä pakkanen
sun kummulleni jäädyttää
kuin liljankukan valkoisen.
Se viime uhriksesi jää.
MUSTAT HELMET.
Pikihelmet te kaulassa rakastetun,
jota pyörteenä kohtasi lempeni mun,
mua pauloistanne te päästä ette,
öin unissa käärmeenä kiemurtelette,
ja päivin saatana saanut on
mun sydämessäni asunnon.
En usko ma sanoja rakkauden,
epäluulo ja viha on surmannut sen,
— jos helmet ei murru, kun poikki hakkaan,
vedän, kiristän ketjua kaulassa rakkaan
ja mustain helmien silmukkaan
oman ruumiini ripustan keinumaan.
HÄRKÄTAISTELIJA.
I
Vain muodottoman, villin pään
ja huohottavat silmät nään.
Sain kuulla juuri: pettänyt
mun nainen on — ja siksi nyt
taas tyyntä kättä tarvitaan.
Se meistä, ken on maltiton,
se saaden lopun autuaan
jää saalihiksi hietikon.
... Tein työni lailla mestarin,
ja kautta Santta Pietarin
nyt vannon valan hurjimman:
se tyttö, jota rakastan,
ei huomispäivää nähdä saa!
Ja mieheen, jota halveksin,
saa kautta Santta Pietarin!
myös säiläni mun sukeltaa.
II
Vyö silkkinen ympäri vain,
ja hän käymähän valmis on
läpi suosionhuutojen raivoavain,
yli hehkuvan hietikon.
Veri syyttäen miekasta huus:
— Olet armaasi murhannut!
Jätä mielestä maine ja kunniakkuus,
olet kuoleman ansainnut!
Kuin mieletön taisteli hän
tulenleimuvin viittoineen.
Härän nähtiin villisti syöksähtävän,
hänet heittävän ylitseen —
SIRKUKSESSA.
Sirkuskupoolin alla
näin minä ihmettä monta,
huimaa ja uskomatonta;
suosionmyrskyllä kuumimmalla
trapetsityttönen palkittiin,
mutta narrin itkulle naurettiin.
Yhtä en näkyä milloinkaan
mielestä saa minä erkanemaan:
seinälle notkea nuorukainen
hypähti kätensä ojentaen,
vastassa kaunis ja ylpeä nainen
seisoi veitsiä lennättäen.
Kylmän uhrinsa ympärille
terästä sateli sukkelaan,
nousten nilkoista ryntähille,
kättä, kaulaa jo kaartamaan.
ihoa nuollen ne sulkivat
piiriinsä kasvotkin kalpeat.
Jäsenin pelosta jähmettyvin
aseista jonkun ma vartosin
syöksyvän suuhun tai silmihin...
— Havahdin vihdoin ja vaaratta, hyvin
tajusin leikin sen päättyneen,
katsomon riemuhun puhjenneen.
KUOLEVA.
Löi veitsen kylkeeni seisomaan
ja vavisten juoksi pois.
Pian kansa rientäisi katsomaan
ja saavuttaa hänet vois,
jos kaatuisin ojaan.
Sen vuoksi henkeä pidättäin
ma seinään nojaan.
Oma puukko. Melkeinpä käsikin,
joka vyöltäni otti sen
vain leikkiäkseen — ja painoikin
sen lävitse keuhkojen.
Syyn tiedän kyllä.
Sen niinkuin laviinin vyöryvän
näin päämme yllä.
En jaksa seisoa kauempaa,
jo näköni himmenee.
Sitä yö ja pimeys suojelkaa,
joka luotani pakenee!
— Nyt haavani avaan
ja puukkoni kahvaa suudellen
isämeitäni tavaan.
