_Antti_ (tulee). Terveisiä kirkolta. (Helmi ei ole kuulevinaan.) No
eikö sitä tervetuliaisiksi suoda edes pientä muiskuakaan? (Tarttuu
Helmiä vyötäisistä.)
_Helmi_ (riuhtaisee itsensä irti). Anna minun olla!
_Antti_. Ohoh! Mistäpäin nyt tuulee, kun ollaan noin nenä kippurassa?
_Helmi_. Mene sinä vaan sen Olga-ompelijan luo. Ehkäpä hänellä on nenä
suoremmassa.
_Antti_ (viheltää). Ahaa, vai siitä se kenkä puristaa!
_Helmi_. Niin juuri. Luulet ehkä, etten mitään tiedä. Mutta näinpä omin
silmin tuolta aitan ylisiltä vilkaistessani maantielle päin, kuinka
sinä saattelit tuota Olgaa. Ja se kun oikein hepsasteli ja keikisteli,
niin että ihan pahaa teki katsella.
_Antti_ (kujeillen). Ethän sinä muuten raskisi olla noin vihainen
minulle, vaan se Kontinahon Tahvana kun on pannut pääsi pyörälle, niin
ei enää toiset pojat kelpaakaan.
_Helmi_. Hyi sinua! Sekö vääräsääri?
_Antti_. »Mikäs on sen näkempi, kuin että lapsell' on veärät seäret»,
sanoo savolainen.
_Helmi_. Ja joka on tyhmä kuin saapas.
_Antti_: Sinulla taas on älyä kahdenkin edestä. Talo sillä Tahvanalla
on suuri ja komea eikä tällainen vanha rähjä kuin tämä meidän talo.
_Helmi_. Älä ole noin ilkeä, Antti. Tiedät varsin hyvin, etten
Kontinaholaista ottaisi, vaikka parihevosilla kosimaan ajaisi.
_Antti_. No, kenet sitten ottaisit?
_Helmi_ (jäykistyen). En ketään.
_Antti_. Ai, ai, mitä se mustasukkaisuus saa aikauu. Nyt et muka enää
minusta huoli, vaikka välimme ovat niin selvät, ettei mikään voi meitä
erottaa. Eikös olekin, Helmi? (Koppaa Helmin luokseen ja katsoo häntä
silmiin.)
_Helmi_ (heltyen). Miksi sitte siedät tuon kaupunki-Olgan hepsastelua?
_Antti_. Tulehan istumaan tähän, niin kerron sinulle koko juonen. Mutta
sanohan ensin, tahdothan tulla vaimokseni.
_Helmi_. Tiedäthän, että tahdon, mutta eihän siitä mitään voi tulla,
kun kerran isäntä panee vastaan.
_Antti_. Olethan luvannut lähteä kanssani vaikka Amerikkaan, ellemme
muuten yhteen pääse.
_Helmi_. Niin lähdenkin, ennenkuin sinusta eroan. Mutta en sentään
soisi, että sinun pitäisi minun tähteni jättää kotisi ja perintötalosi
ja lähteä maailmanrantaa kiertämään. Enkä voisi minäkään viihtyä
muualla kuin täällä maalla. Ihan sydäntäni kouristaa ajatellessani,
että olisi pakko lähteä maalta kaupunkiin tai ehkäpä jättää koko tämä
oma rakas Suomenmaa. Eikö totta, ei muualla voisi elää kuin puolta
elämää.
_Antti_. Niin se on, Helmi. Kahdesta tässä maailmassa en voi luopua,
sinusta, Helmi, ja kotimaasta. Emme me Suomesta pois lähde, vaikka
asiat miten kääntyisivät. Jos en kotona sinua omakseni saa, niin
tottapa löytyy jossakin muualla Suomessa pieni pala maata, jonne voimme
kotimme pystyttää ja jossa voimme yhdessä uurastaa. Ja kummapa olisi,
ellei kaksi lujaa tahtoa ja neljä voimakasta käsivartta saisi maasta
muokatuksi leipää jossakin muuallakin kuin Anttilassa.
_Helmi_. Mutta toista olisi sittenkin, jos saisin jäädä tänne
kotitaloosi miniäksi. Voi sentään! Olen suunnitellut niin monenlaista.
Tähän portaiden pieleen istuttaisin ruusupensaita ja tuohon
laittaisin kukkapenkin. Tuonne kaivosalalle järjestäisin kasvitarhan
ja mansikkamaan, jota hoitelisin kuin silmäterääni. Omenapuutarhan
istuttaisin tuonne tuulensuojaan aurinkoiselle paikalle tuvan taa. Voi,
voi, kuinka täällä olisi paljon tehtävää, ja se minua innostuttaisi,
kun vain saisin vapaat kädet. Se uusi kanalakin, josta usein olen
emännälle puhunut ja josta emäntä aina sanoo, että hän on liian vanha
uudistuksia toimeenpanemaan. Mutta minä, joka olen nuori, kyllä minä
hommaisin!
_Antti_. Rakas tyttöni, ihanhan sinä lämpenet. Katsos nyt, eikö ole
syytä kaikin keinoin koettaa taivuttaa isää puolellemme?
_Helmi_. Mutta hänpä ei taivu. Mikä minä olen, köyhä orpotyttö
Ison-Anttilan miniäksi ja tulevaksi emännäksi?
_Antti_. Maailman paras emäntä sinusta tulee, enkä ketään muuta
ota, vaikka itse rovasti tarjoaisi tytärtään. Isä-ukko pitää saada
taipumaan. Ja sitävartenhan minä tässä olen vähän kujeillut sen
kaupunki-Olgan kanssa. Säikäyttääkseni, näetkös, ukkoa.
_Helmi_. Että mitenkä säikäyttääksesi?
_Antti_. No, etkö ymmärrä, ettei isä millään muotoa tahtoisi
miniäkseen tuollaista kaupungin hepsankeikkaa, joka ei maalaisasioista
ymmärrä hölynpölyä. Joka ei osaa muuta kuin hienosti sipsuttaa
korkeakantaisilla kengillä eikä pääse harppaamaan ojan yli, kun hame on
liian kapea. Ei toki. Isä inhoaa sellaista yhtä paljon kuin minäkin.
Olga on juuri kuin entinen tyttö, joka harakasta sanoi: Ai kas, mikä
koree lintu toi on? Ei meittin Tampereell' tollasia o'.
_Helmi_. Sellaisistahan pojat juuri pitävät. Heidän rinnallaan me
typerät maalaistollikot jäämme ihan varjoon.
_Antti_. Älä luule. Me reilut maamiehet rakastamme vain reilua
tyttöäkin, sellaista, joka ymmärtää ja välittää maatöistä ja maalaisen
elämästä. Mutta isää pelottaakseni olen välittävinäni Olgasta, ja kun
häneltä sen kautta silmät aukeavat, niin hän vielä itse pyytää sinua
pojalleen. Varsinkin kun hän saa kuulla Kontinahon Tahvanan meiningit.
Näkee, että tavottelevat he sinua muutkin talokkaat eikä vain hänen
poikansa.
_Helmi_. Mokomakin vääräsääri! Pysyköön hän hyvin loitolla minusta.
_Antti_ (leikillään huolestuneena). Jaa jaa, on sitä nyt mies joutunut
pulaan, kun on kilpakosijakseen saanut itsensä Kontinahon Tahvanan.
(Matkii sääret väärinä.) Jaa-jaa minäkö?
_Helmi_. Heitä jo nuo kujeesi! Siunatkoon, tuolta jo näkyvät isäntä ja
emäntäkin tulevan kirkolta. Mene, veikkonen, sisään. Minun täytyy mennä
lypsylle. (Poistuvat kumpikin taholleen. Isäntä ja Emäntä tulevat;
edellinen istahtaa kuistin penkille.)
_Emäntä_ (pistäytyy tuvassa viemässä virsikirjan pois; takaisin
tultuaan alkaa riisua silkkiä päästään, puistelee sitä ja asettaa
laskoksille). Oikein tuli kuuma kävellessä, vaikkei matka ollut
pitkä. Kyllä se rovasti taas saarnasi niin kauniisti. On siinä miestä
sovittamaan sanansa paikalleen. (Isäntä istuu yrmeänä eikä vastaa
mitään. Emäntä katsoo häneen pitkään, muttei ole mitään huomaavinaan.)
Oli se onni meidän pitäjälle, ettei se rovasti sentään hakenut pois
täältä, niinkuin aikoi. Avosylinhän ne sinnekin olisivat ottaneet...
sellaisen saarnamiehen.
_Isäntä_ (keskeyttäen). Et tainnutkaan huomata meidän Anttia
kirkkomäellä.
_Emäntä_. Ka, näinhän minä Antin.
_Isäntä_. Varmaan sinua miellytti hänen seuranpitonsa sen ompelijan
kanssa?
_Emäntä_. Mitäpä minua! Luulisi, että poika on kyllin vanha valitsemaan
itse seuransa. Kovin hän näytti mieltyneen siihen Olgaan.
_Isäntä_. Ja kyllä se mamselikin pyöriskeli meidän Antin ympärillä,
niin että kerrakseen piisasi. Mutta älähän nuolaise ennenkuin tipahtaa!
Se omena on liian korkealla oksalla sellaisen kaupunginmamselin siihen
ylettyäkseen.
_Emäntä_. No, onhan tyttö ainakin kylliksi hieno.
_Isäntä_. Ihanko sinä tosissasi, äiti? Ei ikänä Anttilaan huolita
tuosta miniäksi. Tuskin osaa erottaa lehmää lampaasta eikä ymmärrä
muuta kuin itsensä koristamista.
_Emäntä_. Eihän sinulle kelpaa miniäksi tämä meidän Helmikään. Ja Helmi
on tyttö, joka osaa töitä tehdä, on kunnollinen ja toimelias ja aina
iloinen. Siitä olisin minäkin saanut oivan avun vanhuuteni päivinä.
_Isäntä_. Vai piikatyttö Anttilan miniäksi?
_Emäntä_ (hymyilee). Se on näes sukuvika. Äiti tahtoi aikanaan väen
väkisin renkimiehen isännäksi ja nyt vuorostaan poika tahtoo naida
piikatytön.
_Isäntä_. Ja onkos ollut katumista?
_Emäntä_. Ei ole katumista ollut. Hyvän isännän Anttila aikanaan sai
renkinies-vävypojasta. Ja toivotaan, että piikatytöstä kerran sukeutuu
hyvä Anttilan emäntä.
_Isäntä_. Tässä on eri asia. Kun minä taloon tulin, oli se kehno
ja rappiolla. Minä sen vasta tällaiseen kuntoon kohotin, niin että
kyläläiset jo mainitsevat tätä Iso-Anttilaksi. Nyt tässä jo jotakin
merkitään. Lautamieskin viittaili siihen suuntaan, että ehkä se heidän
Aliina lähtisi meille miniäksi. Ja saisi kait Antti kenen vaan.
_Emäntä_. Niinkuin senkin ompelijan. Olisi siinäkin koko emäntä.
_Isäntä_. Älä suututa minua sillä hepsankeikalla.
_Emäntä_. Mutta minäpä pelkään, ettemme enää kauan saa pitää Anttia
luonamme. Kun sinä vastustit hänen naimatuumaansa Helmin kanssa, niin
hän jo alkoi puhua Ameriikkaan lähdöstä. Nyt jos hän hullaantuu tuohon
ompelijaan, niin hän varmasti muuttaa ainakin kaupunkiin, jos ei
edemmäksi. Siinä me sitte vanhukset jäämme kahden, kun Ainokin syksyllä
viedään rikkaaseen taloon.
_Isäntä_. Niin — parempi se sitte olisi piikatyttökin kuin tuo
kaupungin ryökkinä.
_Emäntä_. No, parempi, parempi. Jos kuinkakin hyvä. Mutta myöhäistäpä
se saattaa olla katuminen. Kontinahon Tahvana kuuluu kovin kosiskelevan
Helmiä. Ja hulluhan tyttö olisi, ellei ottaisi mokomaa rikasta miestä.
Pääsisi suoraa päätä ison talon emännäksi.
_Isäntä_. Ettäkö Tahvana kosiskelee Helmiä? Piikatyttöä! Kas se, kas se!
_Emäntä_. Koko pitäjähän siitä puhuu.
_Isäntä_. Ja ettäkö Helmi ottaisi ennen Tahvanan kuin meidän Antin? Se
on niétua, sanon minä.
_Emäntä_. Eihän Antti ole tarjollakaan.
_Isäntä_. Mutta jos olisi?
_Emäntä_. Antaa vain asiain jaan. Kontinaholainen saa Helmin, ja Antti
nai ompelijan ja muuttaa kaupunkiin. Itsehän olet niin järjestänyt.
_Isäntä_. Ei ei, siitä kun ei tule mitään. Ottaahan Helmi Antin ihan
mielellään, siitä olen varma.
_Emäntä_. Kysypäs häneltä.
_Isäntä_. Ja vaikka kysyisinkin. En minä siitä pahene. Passaa minun
kosia pojalleni hyvämaineista kunnon tyttöä mistä vaan. Ei Iso-Anttila
itke perintöjä miniältään.
_Emäntä_. Niinkuin ei entinen pieni Anttilakaan kaivannut niitä
vävyltään.
_Tahvana_ (tulee). Päivää.
_Emäntä_. Päivää.
_Isäntä_. Päivää. Painakaa puuta. No, mitä Kontinahoon kuuluu?
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa Kontinahoonko? No, kuuluneeko tuota erikoisempia.
_Isäntä_. Joko teillä on heinät tehty?
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa meilläkö? Johan meillä alkaa olla tehty. Vähä
lietettä vielä on jälellä.
_Emäntä_. Jalanko se Tahvana tuli?
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa minäkö? Enhän minä jalan, kun oikein orihevosella.
_Emäntä_. Tahvana taitaakin sitte liikkua kosimaretkellä.
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa minäkö?
_Emäntä_. Ka, Tahrana, kukas muu.
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa kosimassa? No, vaikkapa liikkuisinkin. Puhemieshän se
pitää olla.
_Isäntä_. No, se on selvä. Puhemieshän se olla pitää. Ketäs se Tahvana
sitte meinaa kosia?
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa minäkö? No, sitä Kelmiäpä, sitä, joka tässä on.
_Isäntä_. Ohhoh, vai sitä se Tahvana?
_Tahvana_. Sitäpä sitä, sitä sitä, justiin sitä. Sitä Helmiä.
_Emäntä_. Vaan tykkääkö se Helmi sitte Tahvanasta?
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa minustako? Sitähän minä justiin pelkään, että jos ei
tykkää.
_Emäntä_. Siitä pitäisi ottaa selvä.
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa selväkö? Niin, selvähän siitä pitäisi ottaa.
_Emäntä_. Parasta on, että Tahvana itse kysyy.
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa minäkö? Eiköhän se niinkuin puhemiehen kautta suju
mukavammin?
_Isäntä_. Tarkoittaako Tahvana, että minä tässä rupeaisin Tahvanalle
puhemieheksi? Vai mitä?
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa mitäkö? No no, just just, sitähän minä, että jos
isäntä rupeaisi puhemieheksi.
_Isäntä_. No nyt! Saamarin sälkö, eikö ole päässyt irti! (Hypähtää ylös
ja lähtee juoksemaan pois. Helmi tulee.)
_Emäntä_ (Tahvanalle). Taitaa sentään olla viisainta, että Tahvana itse
kysyy Kelmiltä. Minä jätän teidät kahden.
_Tahvana_ (säikähtäen). Jaa-aa minäkö?
_Helmi_. Päivää, Tahvana. Näkeepäs Tahvanaakin täälläpäin.
Naima-asioilla ihan taitaakin liikkua kun on noin juhlatamineissaan.
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa minäkö? He he, osasitpa oikein arvata. Naimapa-,
naima-asioillahan sitä minä liikun.
_Helmi_. No, enkös arvannut. Vai on sillä Tahvanalla jo tyttö
katsottuna?
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa tyttökö? On, on tyttö katsottuna.
_Helmi_. No, sitte minä arvaan kuka se on.
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa kukako? No, se on lysti, että Helmi arvaa. Minä näes
olen meinannut — meinannut näes — niinkuin Helmi arvaa, että meinannut,
että pyytää Helmiä —
_Helmi_ (keskeyttäen). Niin arvaanhan minä heti, että Tahvana on
meinannut pyytää minua puhemiehekseen. Rupeanhan minä mielelläni. Kyllä
minä Tahvanaa Olgalle kehun, kehun oikein kovasti.
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa Olgalleko?
_Helmi_. Niin, tietysti Olgalle. Sehän tietysti on se tyttö, josta
Tahvana tykkää.
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa tykkää?
_Helmi_. Mikä ihme se on, että Tahvanakin on rakastunut Olgaan? Niinhän
kaikki pojat ovat. Kovasti kaunis ja hieno tyttö se Olga onkin.
_Tahvana_ (yhä enemmän hölmistyen). Jaaa-a kaunisko?
_Helmi_. Tahvana saa olla ihan huoleti, kyllä minä koetan Tahvanan
puolta pitää.
_Tahvana_. Jaa-aa puoltako pitää? Mutta, älähän nyt, Helmi. Sinä olet
nyt ihan erehdyksissä.
_Helmi_ (matkien). Jaa-aa minäkö.
_Tahvana_. Niin, erehdyksissä, ihan erehdyksissä. Kuulehan nyt.
_Helmi_ (yhä matkien). Jaa-äa kuulehan? (Hypähtää ylös.) Kuulen, kuulen
ja näen myös. Tuolla tulevat Aino ja Olga niin käsikkäin. Nyt voit itse
oikein parhaasi mukaan kosia Olgaa. (Olga ja Aino tulevat veräjästä ja
tervehtivät. Antti ja Emäntä tulevat tuvasta.)
_Olga_ (keikistellen). Oi, kuinka sievä talo tämä on. Ja kuinka ihana
tuo ruispelto on, kun se tuulessa lainehtii.
_Antti_. Ohrapelto se muuten on.
_Olga_. Oi, niinkö? Kuinka te olette suurenmoinen, kun jaksatte pitää
mielessänne kaikki eri kasvit! Tiedättekö, teidän pitää opettaa
minuakin. Tahdon oppia kaikkea maalaista, ihan kaikkea. Ette voi uskoa,
kuinka rakastan maalaiselämää. (Kirkaisee.) Huh, mutta tuota härkää
minä pelkään! (Tarttuu Antin käsivarteen.) Teidän pitää suojella minua.
(Huitoo päivänvarjollaan.) Pois, härkä! Ush, pois, mene pois, härkä!
_Antti_. Rauhoittukaahan toki, hyvä neiti, eihän meidän Lemmikki mikään
härkä ole eikä tee kellekään pahaa. Ja onhan tässä vielä aitakin
välissä.
_Olga_. Miksi sillä sitte on niin vihaiset sarvet? (Isäntä tulee.)
Kyllä minä kauheasti rakastan maalaiselämää, mutta lehmiä ja härkiä
minä pelkään.
_Aino_. Tule sitte kanssani meidän hakaan katsomaan lampaita. Meillä on
monta niin hauskaa karitsaa.
_Olga_. Ei, kiitoksia, jos siellä on pässikin.
_Isäntä_. Eihän se uskalla puskea noin koreata röökinää.
_Olga_. Isäntä laskee leikkiä. Mikä korea minä muka olen? Eihän minulla
täällä maalla ole mukana mitään hienouksia. Kaikki silkkileningit ja
paremmat hatut jätin kaupunkiin.
_Isäntä_. Ohhoh! Meillä täällä maalla on naisilla aina yllään
silkkileninki, kun ovat lypsämässä. Ja paras hattu päässä täällä lantaa
luodaan.
_Olga_. Isäntä on kovin leikkisä. Ai, kuinka kovasti minä tykkään
leikkisistä vanhoista miehistä.
_Aino_. Tule, Olga, minun aittaani opettamaan minulle sitä pitsiä, jota
lupasit.
_Olga_. Mennään vaan. (Läpäyttää mielistellen Anttia päivänvarjollaan.)
Saa Anttikin tulla mukaan. Opetetaan Anttikin virkkaamaan pitsiä.
_Isäntä_ (yrmeänä). Jäähän, Antti, tähän. Minulla olisi sinulle vähän
asiaa. (Istuutuvat keinulaudalle. Olga ja Aino menevät aittaan.)
_Emäntä_. Mennäänpäs me tupaan, Tahvana, niin Helmi pyöräyttää meille
kirkkokahvit. (Menee tupaan. Tahvana ja Helmi seuraavat häntä.)
_Isäntä_ (nyökkää aittaan päin). Tuon tytön kanssa sinun ei huoli
seurustella. Se on minun sanani.
_Antti_. Niinhän isä aina sanoo, jos minä jotakin tyttöä katselen. Sama
puhe se oli Kelmistäkin.
_Isäntä_. Helmistä? Helmi on tuon rinnalla ihminen kuin ihminen.
_Antti_. Niinhän tuota luulisi. Ei kukaan voi Helmistä muuta kuin
kiitosta mainita. Mutta eihän tuota hänkään teille miniäksi kelpaa.
_Isäntä_. Mutta entä jos kelpaisi?
_Antti_. Se mieli tulee nyt liian myöhään.
_Isäntä_. Senkö Kontinaholaisen takia?
_Antti_. Senpä juuri. Kaikkihan sen tietää, että Tahvana kosii Helmiä.
Tuossa juuri omin silmin näin, kuinka Tahvana puhutteli Helmiä pitkään,
ja Helmi näytti olevan kovin myöntyväinen.
_Isäntä_. Pahuksen varsa! Sen takia minun täytyi lähteä ja jättää
Tahvana, Veikka olin päättänyt, etten päästäisi häntä Helmin kanssa
kahden.
_Antti_. Ei olisi mikään ihme, jos Helmi ottaisi Kontinaholaisen.
Pääseepä taloon heti yksin emännöimään, saa järjestellä kaikki mielensä
mukaan. Ei ole anoppia eikä appea häntä komentamassa.
_Isäntä_. Ihanko sinä luulet, että Helmi lähtisi Kontinahoon?
_Antti_. Ka, miksikä ei voisi lähteä? Ja minäkin lähden tästä
kaupunkiin onneani etsimään.
_Isäntä_. No, älähän nyt hätäile. Tuumitaanhan vähän. Katsos, me tässä
äidin kanssa olemme arvelleet, että jos nyt sitte naisit sen Helmin.
Kunnon tyttöhän se on, oikein kunnon tyttö. Ota pois se vaan, ei nyt
sitte enää panna vastaan.
_Antti_. Mutta jospa hän ei enää ole otettavissa.
_Isäntä_. Pitää olla! Ainahan me nyt lyömme laudalta tuollaisen
Kontinaholaisen, vääräsäären känttyrän. Älähän huoli, poikaseni, surra.
Minä itse kun kysäisen tytöltä, niin ihme, jos ei suostu. Sinä kun
olet nuori ja kokematon, niin et osaa näitä asioita järjestää. — Mutta
