Näytelmällisesti kuvatakseni sitä valistustyötä, minkä edistysseurat
meidän maassamme ovat aikaansaaneet viimeisinä vuosikymmeninä,
olen suunnitellut neliosaisen näytelmäsarjan, jonka ensimäinen
osa "Korpi nukkuu" käsittelee sitä aikaa, jolloin ei vielä ollut
yhteisiä edistysrientoja kansallisessa herätyksessämme. Toinen osa
"Korpi herää" koskettelee raittiusliikettä, kolmas "Korpi nousee"
nuorisoseura-aatetta, ja neljäs "Korpi liikkuu" työväenaatetta,
Jokainen näistä osista, ollen itsenäinen näytelmä, sopii erikseen
esitettäväksi, ja on, helpon näyttämölle-asettamisen puolesta,
mahdollinen ahtaimmissakin oloissa.
Olosuhteiden mukaan voidaan myös, joko yhden tai useamman illan
ohjelmana, esittää koko sarja yhtäjaksoisena, näyttämöllisenä
kuvauksena edistysseurojemme sivistyspyrkimyksistä menneenä ajanjaksona.

Luonnepiirteitä henkilöistä on jo mainittu näytelmässä 'Korpi nukkuu'.
Asianmukaiset muutokset tulevat ilmi tämän näytelmän tapahtumissa.
Perttu on tässä näytelmässä siisti sekä naamaltaan että ulkoasultaan.
Suokorven pirtti. Aamupäivä.
ELINA tulee ulkoa, hameenhelmat vyötäisille käärittyinä. Katsoo
pöydällä olevia ruokia, tekee tyytymättömän eleen, kun huomaa
ettei niihin ole koskettu. Menee sitten ja kurkistaa kamariin.
Vetää vihaisesti oven kiini. Ajattelee mitä tekisi. Päästää sitten
päättäväisesti hameensa alas ja alkaa korjata pois ruokia pöydältä.
SIMUNA tulee ulkoa, länget kainalossa.
Ei tuossa tehtaanajossa hevoskalutkaan kestä. (Etsii kaapista
tarvekaluja ruvetakseen korjaustyöhön).
ELINA
Miksi isä panee niin suuria kuormia?
SIMUNA
No, eihän sitä kehtaa tehdä huonompaa urakkaa kuin muutkaan. (Istuu
penkille ja alkaa korjata).
ELINA
Sepä se! —
SIMUNA
Vaikka huonommathan ne ovat tulleet melkein jokaisessa tilityksessä —
kahdelta hevoselta. Minä kyllä puolestani Ruskon kanssa pääsen joskus
ylikin muiden, mutta —
ELINA
Isä yrittää liikaa. Ei olisi tarpeellista —
SIMUNA
On se tarpeellista. Talon puolesta häpeän — tai oikeastaan poikani
puolesta. Hän saa joskus vain puolet tilitystä — yhtä hevosta kohti —
kun ei laiskuudeltaan kerkiä —
ELINA
Eiköhän olisi viisainta jättää koko ajo —
SIMUNA
Älä nyt sitä aina! Tuleehan tästä rahaa —
ELINA
Ja talon työt jäävät tekemättä. — Tuhannen markkaa saatte tehtaalta
koskivuokraa — pitäisi sen riittämän rahatuloiksi! — Ja lehmilloista
ostettaisiin vaikka kuinka paljon — mutta kun ei kohta ole mitä
myydään. Olette ruvennut vallan tehtaan kärräriksi —
SIMUNA
Ne on niitä Pertun juttuja —
ELINA
Ja Perttu on oikeassa.
SIMUNA
Hm! Luulee niin papiksi parantuneensa sen jälkeen kun lopetti
viinanpolttonsa — kun pannut rikottiin — ettei muuta tee kuin saarnaa —
ELINA huokaa.
Kyllä tässä onkin saarnaamista.
Äänettömyys.
SIMUNA matalasti, aivan kuin väärää asiaa puolustaen.
Olenhan sanonut, että ne uudet tukkiraiteet kun valmistuvat, niin
hevoskärräys loppuu — ja silloin minäkin lopetan. On niin mukavaa saada
vähän rahoja. Ne minä heti upotan talon asumiseen.
ELINA
Katsokaa sitten myös, että ajetaan kunnolla kun kerran ajetaan —
molemmilla hevosilla!
SIMUNA katsoo Elinaan.
Mikä sinuun on mennyt? Aina niin hiljainen ja sävyisä — ja nyt torailet
myötäänsä?
ELINA
Kyllä tässä vaan oppii. Ei ainutta ilon päivää ole näkynyt
vuosikausiin. Kyllä tässä vaan paraskin paatuu. (Pyyhkii kyyneleen
liinankulmallaan).
SIMUNA katsoo Elinaan neuvottomana, panee työnsä pois ja rupee
sytyttämään piippuaan.
Kyllähän se niin on. On se. — Enkähän minä sinun velimiestäsi puolusta —
ELINA
Se vielä puuttuisi, että joku Heikkiä puolustaisi —
SIMUNA
Enkä minä puolusta Mäkipään Mikkoakaan. Ensin laittoivat itsensä
väärästä valasta linnaan vuosikausiksi — eivätkä siitä ole yhtään
ottaneet opikseen —
ELINA
Eivätkä ota — yhä vaan juovat ja elämöivät — kuin viimeistä päivää —
SIMUNA raskaasti.
Minä olen sentään odotellut jotakin muutosta — ja olen koettanut
vaieta — ja pitää toivoa yllä — etupäässä sinun tähtesi — (ottaa
lakin päästään ja pyyhkii otsaansa) — ja itsenikin tähden — meidän
kaikkien tähden — ettei kaikki raukeisi yhteen läjään. (Ryhtyy taas
työhönsä). Enhän minäkään puusta ole. Näenhän minä sinunkin kohtasi —
jos omanikin. (Arkaillen ja venyttäen.) Ja jos sinä vaan suostuisit
johonkin toiseen — ja jättäisit sen Mikon mielestäsi — ottaisit jonkun
kunnon miehen —
ELINA hiljaa ja surunvoittoisesti.
Minä olen jo odottanut Mikkoa niin kauvan — että — olen siihen
tottunut —
SIMUNA
Molemmat olette samallaiset sekä sinä että Mikon sisar. Marttakin
odottaa Heikkiä. Eikä kummallakaan ole aikaa akoittumaan. — Höh, höh!
Kyllä sen olen huomannut. — Enkä usko niistä kaupoista koskaan mitään
tulevan — siksi ehdotankin —
ELINA aivan kuin välttääkseen isänsä ajatuksen pääsemistä ilmoille,
puolustautuu.
No, vastahan ne hiljattain linnastakin pääsivät.
Äänettömyys.
SIMUNA
Eikö Heikki ole vielä noussut?
ELINA
Ei ole.
SIMUNA
Ja kohta⁻ on puolipäivä.
ELINA alkaa pestä astioita.
Mitäpä humalaisella — parasta jos nukkuu huomiseen.

MARTTA tulee.
Hyvää päivää!
SIMUNA
Jumal' antakoon!
ELINA
Päivää, Martta! (Iloisesti.) No, kerran ahkerakin hellittää.
MARTTA
Kun keskipäivällä kyläilee — niin kyllä.
SIMUNA ystävällisesti.
No, istumaan, naapurin emäntä! Tänne peräpenkille!
MARTTA istuu uunin viereen.
Kiitoksia vaan! Minä taas kohta —
ELINA
No, älä nyt heti lennä, kun kerran tulit. Minäkin jo pian saan nämä
astiat —
SIMUNA
Mitäs kuulumisia naapuriin?
MARTTA katkerasti.
Mitäs meidän kuulumisista! — Onko Heikki Kotona?
SIMUNA vitkaan.
Onhan se —
ELINA
Tuolla nukkuu kamarissa.
MARTTA
Mikkoa ei ole näkynyt sitten kun eilen lähti.
ELINA pysähtyy työssään.
Sinnekö Hyyppölän tansseihin — Heikin kanssa?
MARTTA
Niin — sinne.
ELINA
Mutta minnekähän Mikko sitten jäi Heikistä?
MARTTA
Oli kai niin — ettei kyennyt. Onni että Heikki edes —
SIMUNA lopettaa työnsä ja ottaa länget.
Sama kai on missä tiedoton nukkuu — kotona tai kylässä. (Menee ulos).
ELINA
Näetkös nyt! Olisi ollut parempi, jos mekin olisimme menneet. Olisivat
ehkä tulleet meidän kanssamme kotia.
MARTTA melkein itsekseen.
Mitähän tästä tulee? Mitä oikein lopuksi tulee? (Martta hymyilee
raukeasti.) Niinkuin viimeinkin. Näithän sen itse. Puskistoon painuivat
juopposeuraan — ja meidät jättivät yksin — sekä olemaan että lähtemään —
ELINA
Näitkö isän kasvoja kun lähti? Nyt minä vasta huomaan kuinka paljon hän
kärsii — vaikka ei tahdo sitä näyttää.
MARTTA
Kärsiihän tässä karrelle — yksi ja toinen.
ELINA saa työnsä tehtyä.
Kai sinä istahdat kahvinkeittoajan — minä heti — ehkä Heikkikin jo
herää — saamme sitten kuulla —
MARTTA
Voisihan tuota herätellä —
ELINA hommassa.
Minä panen ensin tulelle — odota nyt — (Menee ulos).

HEIKKI tulee kamarista paitahihasillaan.
Kas! Marttako täällä! Päivää! (Menee kättelemään).
MARTTA vähän leikillisesti.
Joko on aika nousta?
HEIKKI hauskasti.
No, eihän sitä näin kesällä tiedä ajasta, kun se aurinko aina
toljottaa S—
MARTTA terävästi.
Ja kun yön askareet niin rasittavat —
HEIKKI istuu penkille.
Eihän ne — mitäs ne —
MARTTA
— ja aurinko hävettää vähän.
HEIKKI
Älä nyt! Sattui sellainen pieni nikama tähän
MARTTA
Kohta niitä ei enään satu.
HEIKKI vilkastuen.
Ei. Mistä sen tiedät?
MARTTA
Alkaa mennä samaa kyytiä yötä päivää — ilman nikamia.
HEIKKI
Ole nyt! — Mitä sinä siellä ovensuussa istut! (Nousee ja ottaa Marttaa
kädestä). Tule peremmälle! Tänne! (vetää Marttaa penkille istumaan).
Kas noin! Eihän tulevan emännän sovi ovipielissä piileskellä.
MARTTA nyrpyllään.
Missä lie tuleva emäntäsi! Tokko on vielä syntynytkään!
HEIKKI istuu Martan viereen.
Tässä se on jos tietää tahdot — ja tämän se on näköinen. (Panee kätensä
Martan vyötäisille).
MARTTA
Paljon puhuja — vähän tekijä!
HEIKKI
Valmiiksi puhuttu on puoliksi tehty! Ja nyt se tehdään loppuun. Minä
sen niin eilen päätin.
MARTTA
Eilen? Humalassa?
HEIKKI
Jo ennen humalaa eilen. Ja tänään sen jälkeen.
MARTTA nousee.
Pyh! Se kyllä taas unohtuu. (Menee oikealle uunin viereen).
HEIKKI pää vaipuu käden nojaan.
Sinä et usko, että minä olen jo kyllästynyt tähän kaikkeen.
MARTTA istuu uunipenkille.
Eipä se siltä ole näyttänyt! — Mihin Mikko jäi?
HEIKKI nostaa päänsä.
Eikö hän ole kotona?
MARTTA
Ei.
HEIKKI raapii korvallistaan.
Sitten hän taisi jäädä Hyyppölään — kun lähdin —
(Simuna ja Perttu tulevat).
SIMUNA
Perttu käy sisään levähtämään! Kai se tuollainen reppu taakaksi tulee
pitkillä taipaleilla.
PERTTU
Päivää taloon! (Nauraa.) Ei rakas taakka taakaksi ole. (Panee reppunsa
ovipieleen ja menee tervehtimään.) Terveeks'! Terveeks'!
SIMUNA
Kirjojako se Perttu yhä —? Käy istumaan!
MARTTA
Ennen kuljetti viinalekkereitä.
PERTTU istuu.
Niin tein ennen. (Hymyilee.) Tein ymmärrykseni mukaan.
SIMUNA
Myrkkyä keittelit täällä korvessa.
PERTTU innostuen.
Niin tein. Myrkkyä keitin ja — möin kuolemaa ympärilleni. Mutta ajat
muuttuu — ja korpikin herää —
HEIKKI katkeran ivallisesti.
Kai sinulla sentään on repussasi joku pieni nassakka kirjojen alla?
PERTTU hypähtää ylös ja menee vilkkaasti repustaan ottamaan kirjoja.
Viinaa ja kirjoja! Mitä sinä puhut, mies! Myinkö minä kirjoja silloin
kun keitin viinaa? Häh! Ja juottaisinko nyt ihmiset humalaan kun
niille saarnaan raittiutta. Ja minä voin saarnata raittiutta paremmin
kuin muut, sillä minä olen levittänyt kurjuutta ja nähnyt kauhistusta
enemmän kuin muut.
ELINA tuo kahvivehkeet sisälle ja asettaa pöydälle.
Kas, Perttu! (Tervehtii.) Päivää! (Katsahtaa veljeensä.) Perttuhan tuli
sopivaan aikaan.
PERTTU nyökkää ja hymyilee kaivaessaan repussaan.
Minä osaan aina sopivaan aikaan, minä. En minä ensi kertaa kierrä tätä
korpea. Hyyppölän tanssien jälkeen.
SIMUNA hymyilee.
Onko se jokin erityinen aika?
PERTTU
Ooh! Minä olen monta miestä saanut seuraani tanssin jälkeisenä päivänä.
Silloin helpommin katuu ja on taipuvaisempi raittiuteen. — Kas! tässä
se onkin! (Ottaa repustaan yhden kirjan ja menee istumaan Heikin
viereen.) Näetkös Heikki! Tämä on sinulle. (Näyttää kirjaa.) Näetkös!
»Juopon elämä.» Tässä kirjassa sinä näet itsesi aivan kuin peilissä.
(Toiset nauravat).
HEIKKI nolona.
Minä en tarvitse! Minä kyllä hoidan asiani —
PERTTU toimessaan.
Niin luulisi — ja niin sinun pitäisi tehdä mutta et vaan tee. Olet
heikko kun kiusaus tulee —
HEIKKI ärtyisesti.
Ja kiusaus on tullut useimmiten Pertun hahmossa.
PERTTU masentumatta.
Silloin oli välikappaleena viina —
HEIKKI katkerasti.
— joka johti meidät vankilaan.
PERTTU
No, juuri niin se teki. Mutta nyt on välikappaleena kirja —
raittiusseura — ja —
HEIKKI
Minä en tarvitse teidän kirjojanne — enkä teidän — välikappaleitanne.
ELINA
Kyllä sinä vaan tarvitsisit jotakin, josta apu lähtisi —
MARTTA
Minä otan yhden tuollaisen Mikolle.
ELINA äkkiä.
Niin. Kuule, Heikki! Mihin sinä Mikon jätit?
HEIKKI murahtaen.
En tiedä.
PERTTU hämmästyen.
Eikö Mikko ole vielä tullut Hyyppölän matkaltaan?
MARTTA
Ei ole.
PERTTU kääntelee kirjaa käsissään mietiskellen. Heittää sen sitten
pöydälle ja menee äkkiä ottamaan reppuansa.
SIMUNA
Poisko jo?
PERTTU kiirehtien.
On vielä monta polkua poljettavana —
ELINA ihmetellen.
Mitä varten Perttu lähtee heti kun tuli puhe Mikosta?
PERTTU
Enhän minä — asioitteni tähden minä —
MARTTA
Tiedättekö missä Mikko on?
PERTTU
Enhän minä tiedä — luulin olevan kotona, kun olitte niin levollisia —
ELINA
Levollisia?
MARTTA hypähtää ylös.
Pitäisikö olla levottomia —?
PERTTU hätäisenä.
Ei suinkaan! Enhän minä — minun täytyy tuonne tehtaallekin —
SIMUNA
Kuulehan Perttu! Älähän nyt mene!
ELINA
Perttu tietää jotakin Mikosta —
PERTTU
Enhän minä ole sanonut —
SIMUNA
Mutta sinä voit sanoa jos tiedät jotakin.
MARTTA
Onko jokin onnettomuus —?
PERTTU
Enhän minä ole puhunut mistään onnettomuuksista.
HEIKKI on tarkannut keskustelua.
Perttu kieräilee. Se mies ei ole selvää vettä soutanut milloinkaan.
PERTTU
Enkä souda nytkään — jos kulkupuheita lörpötän —
SIMUNA
Tässä on sitten kuitenkin jotakin, koska on kulkupuheita.
ELINA ottaa Pertulta repun.
Miksi ei Perttu voi sanoa mitä on kuullut, kun kerran kaikki sitä
pyydämme.
PERTTU menee masentuneena istumaan.
Pitääkö minun olla ainainen pahan ilman lintu! Kun tulin taloon,
niin kaikki näytti niin rauhalliselta, että olin varma hyyppöläisten
erehdyksestä — ja minäkin ilostuin —
HEIKKI
Mistä erehdyksestä?
PERTTU
Ja kyllä se silti voi jäädä erehdykseksi, vaikkei Mikko olekaan kotona —
SIMUNA
Onko Hyyppölässä sitten tapahtunut jotakin ikävää?
MARTTA
Mitä kummaa nyt sitten —?
PERTTU
Eihän siellä mitään kummaa. Vanha juttu Hyyppölän tanssiaisissa.
Tappelivat.
MARTTA
Tappelivat!
ELINA pelästyen.
Mikkokin?
HEIKKI
En minä siitä tiedä yhtään mitään.
PERTTU
Sinä olit jo aikaisemmin lähtenyt sieltä — kertoivat —
MARTTA
Entä Mikko?
PERTTU
Puhuivat että Mikkokin olisi ollut mukana. Mutta kun tulin tänne — ja
kaikki olitte niin iloisia, niin olin heti varma, että erehtyivät —
ELINA
Ja nyt sitten?
PERTTU
Mutta kun kuulin, että Mikko ei ollut kotona, niin —
HEIKKI
Niin?
PERTTU
En tietänyt mitä olisin ajatellut — ja päätin heti mennä tieheni —
sillä — ei tällaista ole lysti kertoa — jos hyvinkin Mikko ei ollutkaan
siinä mukana.
SIMUNA
Parhaiten teit kun kerroit, että mekin asian tiedämme. Entä — päättyikö
se onnettomasti?
PERTTU pitkään.
No, eihän sitä varsin — vielä tiedä.
ELINA sydän kurkussa.
Vielä?
MARTTA samoin.
Mikkoako on lyöty?
PERTTU
Ei — sitä Pohjan Jaskaa —
SIMUNA
No, miksi ei tiedä vielä?
PERTTU
Sitä lähdettiin heti viemään lääkäriin.
MARTTA vaipuu istumaan.
Herra jumala!
SIMUNA
Ja Mikkoako ne epäilevät lyöjäksi?
PERTTU alakuloisesti.
Niinhän ne —
ELINA vaipuu penkille, hiljaa.
Jesus!
(Äänettömyys).
HEIKKI
Onhan se voinut olla joku toinenkin — vai kuinka?
PERTTU
Ehkä on ollutkin —
MARTTA menee Elinan luo, istuu hänen vieneensä. Elina! Ulkoa kuuluu
askeleita.
(Kaikki odottavat jännityksellä).
MIKKO tulee hitaasti ja synkän näköisenä.
ELINA hypähtää ylös.
Mikko!
MIKKO hiljaa.
Hyvää päivää!
SIMUNA yksin vastaa.
Jumala — antakoon! — Käy istumaan!
MIKKO vaipuu ovensuutuolille.
ELINA on katsonut tutkien Mikkoa, -purskahtaa sitten itkemään ja vaipuu
penkille, pää Martan syliin.
SIMUNA hetken kuluttua, hiljaisesti.
Me kuulimme juuri tuon Hyyppölän tapahtuman — olitko sinäkin siinä
mukana?
MIKKO
Olin minä —
MARTTA arasti.
Kuka löi — Jaskaa?
MIKKO vaikeasti.
Saanko jotakin — juotavaa —
ELINA nousee, kuivaa kyyneleensä, ottaa kaljatuopin pöydältä ja vie
Mikolle.
MIKKO juo ahnaasti, antaa tuopin Elinalle, katsoo häntä silmiin ja
ottaa häntä kädestä. Hetken kuluttua vaipuu pää käden nojaan ja toinen
käsi irtautuu Elinan kädestä, rupeaa itkemään.
ELINA vie tuopin pöydälle, menee Mikon luo, panee kätensä hiljaa Mikon
olalle.
Tule peremmälle — pois tästä kynnysalta — (vie Mikon aivan kuin
tahdottoman lapsen istumaan uunipenkille, ja istuu itse viereen).
MIKKO hiljaisena.
Tietääkö Perttu, että minä löin?
PERTTU
En minä tiedä — enkä olisi tahtonut sitäkään sanoa mitä kerrottiin —
(tuskallisesti) — onnettomuudekseni jouduin siitä puhumaan —
ELINA
Etkö itse muista?
MIKKO Muistelen vähän.
— luulen sen tehneeni — ja kyllä kai sen teinkin —
HEIKKI
Toivotaan nyt sentään, ettei — (on aivan kuin pala kurkussa, tuskin voi
puhua) — ettei aivan suurinta onnettomuutta ole tapahtunut.
MIKKO kolkosti..
Jaska on — kuollut.
(Äänettömyys. Naiset siunaavat hiljaa.)
MIKKO
Kruununmiehet etsivät minua — tulivat Hyyppölään — näin sen metsän
laidasta —
ELINA vaikeroiden.
Herra siunatkoon!
MARTTA
Jumala armahtakoon!
HEIKKI katsoo akkunasta.
Sitten he jo kohta ovat täällä.
MIKKO hypähtää raivokkaasti ylös.
Minä en heidän käsiinsä antaudu! (Katselee hurjana ympärilleen).
ELINA hypähtää ylös.
Mitä aiot tehdä?
MIKKO koettaa tyhjää tuppeaan.
Minä tapan itseni!
(Kaikki nousevat pelästyneinä).
MARTTA
Mikko rakas!
MIKKO hypähtää keskilattialle yhä hurjasti katsellen ympärilleen.
Antakaa minulle jokin ase! Eikö ole minkäänlaisia aseita? (Aikoo
hyökätä ovensuunakaan, jossa on kirveitä ja puukkoja seinällä.) Minua
eivät ota elävänä!
(Naiset syöksyvät estämään).
ELINA
Mikko! Mikko!
MARTTA
Älä veljeni!
SIMUNA on hyökännyt eteen.
Malta mielesi!
HEIKKI on hypännyt yli pöydän.
Sitä emme salli! (Ottaa Mikosta kiini).
PERTTU on samaan aikaan nopeasti ottanut kaikki teräkalut häkistä ja
vie ne ulos.
MIKKO ei temmellä vastaan, mutta huutaa aivan villiintyneenä.
Päästäkää minut! Antakaa minun olla!
ELINA kietoo molemmat kätensä hänen kaulaansa.
Ei! Me emme päästä. Minä en sinua laske. Kuuletko, rakas Mikko! Tule
järkiisi! (Painaa päänsä Mikon rintaan, valittaa.) Voi, voi! Rakas
Mikko!
MIKKO huomaa Elinan, herpautuu jännityksestä, väsyneesti.
Linnaanko taas! Vankilaan takaisin!
ELINA
