SYKSYÄ.
Siell' on nostettu veräjät paikoiltaan,
siell' on puituna pellon vilja.
Ja ikkunan kohdalla tarhassaan
on kuihtunut ruusu ja lilja.
Siell' aitat uhkuvat täyteläät
ja tuuless' on myllyn siipi,
ja naiset nauravat, äänekkäät,
ne pellavapioja riipii.
Siell' lasten karkelot kaikua saa,
mies pellolla auraa kääntää;
siell' ilma on kotoista, kuulakkaa,
ja ylhäällä kurjet ääntää.
Mun sinne on mieleni, sinne vaan
oman henkeni laulut helää;
on onnea siell' edes sielussaan
joka syksy uudesta elää!
SUON SYRJÄSSÄ.
Nyt levätä luonto jo saa,
on povestaan korjattu kyllä.
Niin ääneti aavikon yllä
syys-salamat leimahtaa.
Suon synkeän syrjässä vain
siell' itkevät rukihin aumat.
Pois lentävät lintujen laumat
yli korpien kiiruhtain.
LUHTA-MAILLA.
Ei enää luhta-mailla laulut soi,
ei enää kalkattele karjankellot.
Syyssatehessa nyyhkii nuoret pellot.
Ja kumartuen, kaihoisalla miellä
niin yksinäisen hyljättyinä siellä
vain ladot lakeutta vartioi.
SUN ONNESI.
Sun onnesi ei ole mittaamaton,
syyskaihoni valtakunta,
oi uneksi nyt, koht' ylläsi on
vain kuuran-kirttä ja lunta.
Minä pelkään sirppiä pelloilla sun
ja ikkunais ensi-tulta.
Minä tunnen tuomion alotetun,
ja kyynele kiertyy multa.
MYRSKYPILVIÄ.
Ukkos-ääni uhkaellen käy.
Lähti myrskypilvi, saapui toinen.
Luojan maailma on suurenmoinen,
ei sen äärten yhtymistä näy.
Synkkä sydänpäiv' on päällä,
ihmislapsen synnintuskat suuret.
Vapisevat vankat sydänjuuret,
pisaroita putoo siellä, täällä.
MINÄ RAKASTAN.
Minä rakastan syksyä suurta,
se repii runkoa, juurta,
ja lehtiä lennättää.
Sen taivas on toivoton, tumma,
ja kaiho korkea, kumma
sen soidessa sieluhun jää.
MUUTTOLINNUILLE.
Taas lennätte kevähän maille,
suvi-ilmoille onnekkaille.
Minä vieläkin tänne jään
yön keskehen, ikävään.
Oi kuulkaa, kuiske on mulla:
Minä mielisin matkaanne tulla!
Mut lintuset lentää vain
päin pilviä parvittain.
— Ah, veisitte siivillä sinne,
yli merien, vaikkapa minne!
Tuhat-vuotta jo itkenyt oon
syys-iltahan autioon.
SYYS-ILTANA.
Ja taasen onnen lapset muuttaa saavat
viimeisten kukkain kanssa kaupunkiin.
Ma kylän kujille jään kyyneliin.
Oi sanomattomat on syksyn haavat.
Niin itkun sekaiset on ilman äänet,
niin lohdutonna luonnon laulut soi.
Ja tuulet toivehetta toistaa voi:
kenties sa ainiaaksi tänne jäänet.
Mut ei, ma kerran muuttolintuin lailla
myös lennän yli aavain sinne niin,
miss' sähkölamput loistaa kulkeviin
kuin kuuhut onnellisten asuinmailla.
LÄPI AAVAN.
Minä matkaan suurehen maailmaan
läpi ääneti itkevän aavan,
näen toivoni totehen saavan.
Tätä hetkeä vuosia vuottanut oon,
ja laulanut lähdön aikaa.
En tuskien tuntenut taikaa.
Oi aavikko, aavikko, anteheks' suo!
Jos vieläkin tänne jäisin,
kyll' lempesi ymmärtäisin.
Oi hyvästi nyt, en jäädä ma voi!
Ovat toiveeni kaukana tuolla
tuhat-vaarojen toisella puolla.
SYKSY-AAMUNA.
Miten kolkoksi kylä on käynyt,
miten autioks' armahat maat.
Niin kylmät ja kalvakkaat
syyshallat on ennättäynyt.
Tien varsilla nokkoset seisoa saa,
ja pelloilla pistävät karret.
Ja mustuneet perunan-varret
kuin kuollehet kumartaa.
Ylt' ympäri kylältä kuuluu vain
yks'toikkoinen riihen lyönti,
ja tunnoton tuulen työnti
käy lehtiä kuljettain.
Ja sieluni, sinnekin aikoinaan
on hiipinyt harmaa halla;
meni kaikkeni maailmalla,
meni jättäen jäljet vaan.
II.
MIEROSSA.
Mut tuuli mun tuskani tyynnyttää,
ja luonto lohduksi jääpi,
kun taival on pitkä, ei polkua nää,
ja yö minut yllättääpi.
Nyt ihmiset lämpimäss' uinuu vaan,
mut minä jäin ovien taaksi.
Oi miksikä taivas ei luonutkaan
mua kuuhueks' kalvakkaaksi.
Niin kauvan ma mierossa matkannut oon,
ja sydän on haavoja saanut;
mun äitini kulki jo kalmistoon,
ja isä on lemmestä laannut.
Olen itkenyt itseni uuvuksiin.
Minä painan mättäälle pääni,
ja tähdet taivaalla ilkkuu niin
minun orpoa elämääni.
Mut aurinko aamulla noustuaan
luo lämmintä kylmyyteeni,
ja ennenkun ihmisten ilmoille saan,
se on kuivannut kyyneleeni.
EI TUNTISI.
Olen kulkenut kyliä kauvan
vain varassa matkasauvan;
ja kärsinyt katkerasti,
ah, äärettömyyksihin asti!
Nyt palajan peittelemättä,
minä kaipaan ystävän kättä.
Mut ei mua ykskään nää,
minut pelko jo pyörryttää:
Ei tuntisi tuttavat mua,
elon raipoilla ruoskittua.
MYÖHÄÄN.
Sai lintunen akkunalaudallein
ja lauleli murheitaan.
Mit' onneton toisen tuskille tein?
Ma vaieten kuuntelin vaan.
Se sirkutti säveltä sydämen,
sen silmissä kyynel ui:
— Ne särkivät pesäni pienoisen
ja poikani hukkaantui.
Sua autan, kuuletko, usko vain!
Ja ma nostan raskaan pään.
Mut lintunen akkunalaudaltain
oli lähtenyt lentämään.
VANGIN UNTA.
Ah, tähdet ja taivaan näin!
Ovet raskaat aukeni mulle
elinajaksi tuomitulle.
Minä kuljen kotiapäin.
Ne itkivät silloin mua,
isä, äiti ja sisko pieni,
kun kahleet katkaisi tieni,
ne itkivät vangittua.
Nyt hymyyvät ääneti vaan.
Minä mustille murheille kostan,
koko perheen kunnian nostan,
ja me alamme uudestaan.
Oi, eivät he arvata voi,
minä saavun illalla salaa,
kun takkavalkeat palaa
ja — — vartija ruuan toi...
RUKOUS.
Ma valvon elämäni viime öitä,
ja mietin mennehiä yksin vain;
kuink' olin, kurja, tehnyt matkallain
vain tuhansia epätoivon töitä.
En ymmärtänyt koskaan itseäin,
ja toiset tuomitsivat tuhoisesti.
Ma luulin joskus: hyvyyteni esti
mua pääsemästä tielläin eteenpäin.
Mut ken sen tietää? Rikoin aina, aina,
ja mursin toiveet toisten, omani.
Elämänkoulun ikilomani
mua ällös enää pimeämpään paina!
MINNE!
Ei vääryyttä, vääryyttä näin!
Minä tiedän rikokseni:
Ah taivas, puutteineni
olin pyrkinyt eteenpäin.
Oi älkää lyökö mua,
olen avuton, aivan yksin.
Te ylvähin ymmärryksin
vain nostakaa poljettua.
Mut heiluvan ruoskan nään.
Minä polvistun jalkoihinne.
Ah sanokaa: minne, minne
mun on mentävä kärsimään!
TOIVEET.
Kyll' eksyitte valkeat kyyhkyt,
ei tääll' ole toivon sijaa.
Ah, mustinta uneksijaa
vain vaalii yölliset nyyhkyt.
Oi pimeys peitä, peitä,
ne pettävät tyystin mua.
Ah, kerran ne murskattua — —
ei, ei — minä lemmin heitä!
Jos annan toiveiden mennä,
iäks saan minä päivät harmaat.
Tään kerran jälkeen ne armaat
ei enää luokseni lennä.
SIUNATTU.
Olen siunattu voimasta rakkauden,
on kuormani raskas, pyhä.
Min' en koskaan aatellut lastani, en,
nyt aattelen, aattelen yhä.
Minä aavistin kaiholla, mitä nyt nään,
kun mieheni maljan join,
ja itkien suuressa sylissään
minä äidiksi unelmoin.
Nyt laulan hymniä lapsellein,
nyt viritän virteni uuden,
minä taivaalle tunnustukseni tein,
olen kirjoissa Kaikkisuuden.
Näin ääretönt' onnea milloinkaan
en tuntenut sielussain.
Minä vapisen hetkeä, milloinka saan,
ja odotan, odotan vain...
KEVÄTTÄ.
I
Oi onko se kevättä, ystävä, tuo,
kun kukkaset tekevät terää.
Kun aallot päältänsä peitteen luo,
ja ihmiset päivään herää?
Oi katso, ei kukaan heist' ikävöi
Omat silmäni kyyneliss' uivat.
Minä näin vain syksyn; salamat löi,
ja kukkaset kuivettuivat.
II
Niin nyt kevät-virret helää,
kera päivän ma liiton teen,
en mieli varjossa elää,
vaan kuolla valkeuteen.
Minä avajan sieluni lähteet,
ikipäivää itkien juon,
ja tuskani tummat tähteet
pyhän alttaris äärehen tuon.
Olin pyytänyt päivyttä ennen,
nyt mielin sen hurmasta pois.
Oi Luoja, tään kevähän mennen
en syksyä elää vois.
III
EI SIELUNI IRROTA VOI.
Ja tummat silmät mun sielustain
ikipäiviksi rauhan vei,
niisi' tahtomattani taivaan sain,
miss' salamat säihkyvät leimahtain.
Ei tyynny ne tyrskyt, ei!
Niin äärettömät oli silmät nuo,
en pohjahan päässyt, en.
Niiss' aaltosi värjyvä vetten vuo,
ja ma laineilta liidätin rannan luo
pois uhmasta pyörteiden.
Mut taasen kun nostin ma katsettain
näin taivaani tumman tuon,
se kohosi korkeena rauhoittain,
ja se viilsi ja vihlasi sieluain.
Minä mieleni murheita juon!
Oi, enhän tok' itke taivastain,
vaikk' ukkonen ärjyen soi.
Näen keskellä synkkien salamain
ijankaikkisen kauniin katseen vain,
jost' ei sieluni irrota voi.
MINÄ UPPOSIN.
Niin kauvan ma kaihosin, pelkäsin, itkin,
ja taistelin tunteita vastaan.
Minä tahdoin ne surmata syksyä pitkin,
hänen irrota katsannastaan.
Mut tahtoni miks' oli heikko niin,
minä upposin silmien syvyyksiin.
NYT ITKEN.
En tiedä kuinka ja milloin
minä kohtasin katseen sen.
Ah taivas, silloin, silloin
elin hetkessä autuuden.
Mun silmäni kyynel kasti,
vait' kuuntelin ääntäsi vain;
se kaikui niin kutsuvasti
kuin kellot sunnuntain.
Niin kavahdin kaulaan sulle,
elin onnessa päivät, yöt.
Nyt itken — anteeksi mulle —
niin kipeään, kipeään lyöt!
KUOLOHON ENTÄÄ.
Oi katso, tuossa se lentää — —
mut siivet on rikki, hajan.
Sinä tunnet haavoittajan.
Ei valitusvirsiä; joskaan
niin kaunist' ei surmattu koskaan.
Se ääneti kuolohon entää...
KUIHTUNUT TUOMENKUKKA.
Minä riistin sen hänen rinnastaan,
minä suutelin, suutelin sitä,
mut kesken riemua heräsin vaan.
Mitä olin minä tehnyt, mitä?
Nyt tuijotan vait! — Ei tahtoonkaan
ijäks' itselleen onnea tee!
Nyt lehdet on mustana maljassaan,
kukat suudellen karisee.
YHTEEN SOIVAT.
Niin sinut, armahani, hyljäten,
ma lähdin onnen etsintähän yksin.
Nyt palaan pohjattomin pettymyksin
sun anteeks' antamustas rukoillen.
Oi nyt en koskaan lähde luotas, en,
ma aattelen jo täysin ymmärryksin,
ma tahdon käydä kanssas käsityksin
niin, armas, itkien kuin iloiten.
Ja rinnalles ma painan raskaan pääni,
oi ohjaa, ehjennä mun elämääni!
Niin kumman kuumat mull' on kyynelveet.
Mut sielut salaisesti yhteen soivat.
Ja Amorinit itse ilakoivat
kuin ois he ensi-nuolen ampuneet.
SYVIÄ SYITÄ.
Liikaa, liikaa...
Sinä hymyilet anteeksi antain,
kuin polkisit päälleni kantain!
Liikaa, liikaa...
Voin lohdusta hulluksi tulla,
niin syviä syitä on mulla.
SUN MENTYÄS.
Sun mentyäs meillä vain itketään,
yli huoneen käy huokaus salaa.
Ja kasvoilla kärsivän ilmeen nään:
ei koskana palaa.
Minä vaikenen, ystävä, kiitos vain,
ett' taitoit tuskani kerta,
oon kylliksi itkenyt sielussain
ja vuotanut verta!
SANKARILLENI.
Nyt ottaos orhisi valkoinen,
mua varten se valjasta kerran.
Luo tahdon ma Tuonelan herran,
kera sieluni murheiden.
Minä mielisin kiirehin matkallen,
nyt en pelkäisi istuinta Herran.
Mua kuuntele ainoan kerran,
onnetonna kun rukoilen:
Oi vie mua sinne suureen
ijänkaikkisen istuimen juureen
ja kerro, ken minä oon.
Näin nöyrästi Herralle haasta:
Hän on tuhlaaja tahrojen maasta,
ja hän kaipaa jo kalmistoon.
PAIMENTYTÖN LAULUJA.
I
Oi kenpä vois tulkita tunteitani,
kun istun ja solmeilen satujani,
niin tummia, synkkiä kuin syksy-yö,
niin kaunihin kalpeita kuin tähtivyö.
Oi onnekas paimentyttönen on,
soi saloilla soittelo suruton,
ei muuta hän pyydä kuin laulella vaan
ja saduissa syleillä sankariaan.
On kaihonsa kukka ain kuolematon,
se syksyllä syömehen kylvetty on,
ei kesää se nähnyt, ei kevättäkään,
vain talviset tuiskut ja tuulispään.
II
Nuku, kalpea kukkani,
nuku, unteni sankari.
Paimentyttö kun tuudittaa,
peikot ei tulla saa.
Nuku nuppuna, ruusunen,
ällös aukene mailmallen.
Paimentyttö ei ottaa saa
sankarin suudelmaa.
Kohta joutuva lähtö lie,
soitoin urhoni sotaan vie.
Paimentyttö vain silloin saa
muistoja tuudittaa.
III
Hämyn kellot hiljaa kumahteli,
kun ma kera kotkan vuorta viilsin.
Viime hyvästit kun huoahteli,
suurta syksy-unta syömet eli.
Kiitti kumartuen kanervista,
jotka riistelin ma rintahansa.
Kotkani, tuo korkein korke'ista,
janos juoda maista matalista.
IV
Oi yö, vie tervehdys multa,
se salaa ja kiirein vie.
Mun kalpea ritari-kulta
ikävissänsä yksin lie.
Yö, suutele tummaista tukkaa
ja punerra poskipää.
Ma syömeni kultaista kukkaa
en koskaan, en koskaan nää.
IV.
VUOTTEN TAA.
Unten vienot viljapellot
jäivät vuorten taa.
Nuoruus-ajan iltakellot
kaihoin kumajaa.
Mutta miellä katkeralla
tuot' en surra saa,
lemmenkukka-kummun alla
nuoruus nukahtaa.
SYREENI.
Oi syreeni, syömeni kukka,
sinä näit mit' ei nähneet muut.
Ei arvannut vaahtera-rukka,
ei kukkivat pihlajapuut.
Minä avasin ikkunan illoin,
kun kaikk' oli nukkuneet.
Sinä hyväilit huultani silloin,
ja me itkimme viljavat veet.
Oi syreeni ikkunan alla,
ei aavista ystäväs, ei,
mikä kohtalo maailmalla
mun poskeni ruusut vei.
PIRSTOUTUNUT PERINTÖ.
Murtunut on maammon muistokukka.
Totta tuota tarpeekseni itkin!
Kuinka koskaan, hento sielurukka,
pyhän perintösi pirstasitkin?
Etkö kyllin köyhä ollut silloin?
Ei, mut rajattoman rikas, ylväs,
uljaat unelmat sua souti illoin,
aamuin heräsit kuin päivän pylväs.
Kuinka annoit aartehesi mennä,
päästit pyhät tunteet tuulten teille?
Ei nyt rauhan-siivet suihkain lennä,
vieden puhtaan virttä enkeleille.
IKÄVÄ ON SIIPIRIKKOJEN.
Kevyt on korkeella liidellä sen,
jok' on karttanut luoteja, paulaa.
Ikävä on siipirikkoisen,
jok' ei jaksa lentää, ei laulaa.
KAIPAUSTA.
Oi, kaipaus, puhkea kyyneliin,
oi ilmoille kulkeos kauvas.
Minä näännyn tuskihin tulisiin,
ah, rintani, missä on rauhas?
Sinä kaipaat; siihen et tyytyä voi,
mitä päivien touhu työksesi toi.
Oi maihinko rientäisit avariin,
vaiko suurihin taivaisiin!
NOSTA — MURRA!
Niin henkeni mun harvoin nukahtaa,
en tiedä mistä silloin unen saa.
On niinkuin aaltonen, mi vaahtoaapi;
vaan myrskyin, tuulten mennen levon saapi.
Ens syksyn tuulet mulle murheen toi,
ne nuoren taimen mahlat maahan loi,
ens syksyn henki oli ylväs, suuri,
ja siks' sen aina muistan, siksi juuri.
ENSI SYKSY.
En jaksa ma astua etehenpäin,
mun on mahdoton taakse jäädä.
Ja turhaan tiedustan itseltäin,
mik' on korkean kohtalon määrä.
Oi nosta jo mua, ei turha se työ,
ja anna mun ehjänä elää.
Tai murra ja kerralla maahan lyö,
jotta henkeni pirstat helää.
VERIEN VIRROILLA.
Minun vereni huutavat, huutavat ain:
miss' on maailman puhtahin maine!
Kenen kulkijan koskissa virtaa vain
tääll' aalloton, läikkyvä laine?
Minun virtaini varsilla viihtynyt on
moni-vuotiset tyyntävät tammet,
ne rauhaa humisi rannikkohon,
ne varjosi vilppahat lammet.
Mut taittuivat tammeni tyyntävät nuo,
ja kuolivat kukkien juuret;
sai sameaks' säilynyt, väikkyvä vuo,
kun saapuivat satehet suuret.
Kuka tohtivi kerskata kuohuistaan
tään myrskyisän elämän mailla?
Kenen vaahdot ei virrannut uomastaan
pois pärskyvän pyörtehen lailla!
VAELTAJA.
Minä tuskien tuudussa istun nyt,
ja taistelen tummat hetket.
Joku synti se taaskin on estänyt
mun sieluni toivioretket.
Olin vannonut hetkessä Herrallein
niin liian raskahan valan.
Sen alla suurimmat synnit tein,
nyt tunnon-tuskista palan.
En uskalla astua alttarin luo,
pyhän liinan poimu on musta.
Nyt kiroja sieluni kalkista juo,
joka tuonut on lohdutusta.
SURULLE.
Oi kiitos, kiitos sullen,
suru suuri, kun muistit mua,
kun et pienien ilojen tullen
mun antanut unhoittua.
Oi kiitos, kiitos, rakkain,
ota omakses sieluni nyt!
Olen sulle jo pohjalta sakkain
verikyynelin hymyillyt.
PETTYMYSTÄ.
Mun silmissä kohtalon kyynelveet
on kerrassa loppuhun kuivat.
Mun sielussa elämän ihanteet
jo aikoja unhottuivat.
Ah, miksi ma aaltohon yksin jäin!
Olen hukkunut elämän mailla.
Minä arkana tuijotan taaksepäin,
en etehen elävän lailla.
Ijankaikkinen pettymys, aina ja uus
mun uskoni vei kuin veikin.
Mun kanssani elämän armottuus
on leikkinyt pitkän leikin.
ÄLÄ VALKENE VIELÄ.
Ei, ei — älä valkene vielä,
yö suuri, mun ystäväin,
sun synkimmässäsi, siellä
tien ikuiseen päivään näin.
Minä ylenen murheessa yksin,
elän onnettomuuksista vain.
Ilot kaikki kun vieretyksin
on siirtynyt sielustain.
Ah siivet, mustat ja suuret,
te jaksatte kantaa mun!
ORPOUTTA.
Oi ällös itke, orpo ihmis-syön,
sun täytyy, täytyy olla tyytyväinen.
Oi onhan päivä suuri, säihkyväinen
molemmin puolin mustimmankin yön.
Oi tyydy tuhatmoiseen taisteloon,
tääll' elon murheet painaa pienen hetken.
Saat pian tehdä suuren riemuretken
Ikuisen Kaitselmuksen kartanoon.
LAULAISIN.
On sulanut öiset kirret,
ja aurinko purppuroi.
Mun sieluni pohjalla soi
niin kumman korkeat virret.
Ja säihkyvin silmin, kulta,
sinä kuuntelet laulua mun,
oi, itsekin oudoksun
oman henkeni hehkua, tulta.
Tämä sointu mun sielussain,
oi jospa sen ymmärtäisin,
sen valtahan ijäksi jäisin,
ja laulaisin, laulaisin vain!
KUKKAINI HAUDALLA.
Yön äärillä pilvet jo uinahtaa,
minä viritän viulua vasta,
ei vielä mun soittoni sortua saa
koen kukkaini haudalla kaiuttaa
ja aatella autuasta.
En hyräile hiljaista hymniä, en,
minä tyynnytän tyrskyn lasta.
Sitä kätkyttä keinutan kaihoillen,
johon hukkui unelmat nuoruuden
pois päivästä parhaimmasta.
Mut karahtaa kielet kalpeat vaan,
ja sieluni itkee salaa.
On kuihtuneet kukkani mullassa maan,
ja myrskyisen virteni kuullessaan
yön ääriltä pilvet palaa.
