Seu manto desdobrava a Noite escura,
E a Rã no charco, o Lobo na espessura
Vociferando, os ares atroavão;
Do trabalho diurno já cessavão
Os rudes, vigorosos Camponezes:
O Vaqueiro, cantando atraz das Rezes,
Após as Cabras o Pastor cantando,
Hião para as Malhadas caminhando,
Tudo jazia em paz, menos o triste,
O desgraçado Elmano, a quem feriste,
Oh pernicioso Amor, cruel Deidade,
Flagélo da infeliz Humanidade:
Tudo, emfim, descançava, excepto Elmano,
Que a mão do Fado, universal Tyranno,
Sentia sobre si descarregada;
Que, longe da Paterna Choça amada,
Dependente vivia em Lar estranho,
Sendo os desgostos seus o seu rebanho.
Honrados Maioraes o Ser lhe derão
Lá junto ao Sado ameno, e lhe fizerão
Das Artes cortezãs prezar o estudo:
As Musas o encantárão mais que tudo,
Ateando-lhe n'alma o Fogo santo,
Que estúpidos Mortaes desdenhão tanto.
Inflammado com elle, ao som da Lira
Quebrava dos Tufões a força, a ira,
E o venerando Téjo socegado,
A cuja fresca praia o trouxe o Fado,
Mil vezes, para ouvir-lhe as ternas mágoas,
A limosa cabeça ergueo das Agoas.
Cégo, convulso, pállido, e sem tino
Entrava na Cabana de Francino
O desditoso Elmano. Entre os Pastores
Geral estimação, geraes louvores
Francino com justiça disfrutava:
Alto saber, o Espirito lhe ornava,
Na vasta Capital fôra creado,
E por expertos Mestres cultivado.
Doce nó de Amizade os dois unia,
Concorrendo a Razão, e a Sympathia
Para tão bella, e placida Alliança.
Notando, pois, a fúnebre mudança,
Que no aspecto do Amigo apparecia,
Assim Francino a causa lhe inquiria:

Que tens, Elmano? Que fatal desgosto
Banha de tristes lagrimas teu rosto?
Tu, que, ainda ha brevissimos instantes,
Te acclamavas feliz entre os Amantes,
Logrando mil carinhos, mil favores

Vens tão choroso, tão afflicto agora!

Retratar-te a mais negra, a mais horrivel
De todas as traições. Não he possivel
Nos Ermos encontrar da Lybia ardente
Monstro, seja Leão, seja Serpente,
Que possa comparar-te á Féra humana,
Que com tanto rigor me desengana.
Quantas vezes notaste, honrado Amigo,
Finezas, que a traidora obrou comigo!
Quantas vezes daqui presenciaste
Seus gestos, seus affagos, e julgaste,
Que o mais ardente amor, a fé mais pura
Pagavão minha candida ternura!
Ouve, e conhecerás (ai de mim triste!)
Que foi sonho, illusão tudo o que viste.
Já sabes, que no dia em que ligado
A Marcia Jonio foi pelo sagrado,
Indissoluvel nó, cantei louvores
A tão ditosos, tão fiéis amores,
E o número augmentei dos Convidados;
Já sabes as meiguices, e os agrados,
Com que a minha infiel me fez ditoso:
Alli, traçando hum baile harmonioso,
Por parceiro me quiz; alli sentada
Junto a mim, vezes mil a refalsada
Protestou, que em sua alma eu só vivia,
Que eu era de seus olhos a alegria,
Dando-me a bella mão furtivamente,
Que, ardendo de paixão, beijei contente.
Pedio-me o desleal, que alli tornasse,
Que tão doce prazer lhe não roubasse:
Guiado por Amor, fui inda agora
Seu desejo cumprir, que antes não fora,
Porque não sentiria este martyrio,
Este ardor, esta raiva, este delirio.
Jonio, que estava á porta da Cabana,
Me veio receber... ah! Quanto engana
Huma apparencia alegre, e carinhosa!
Entrei, puz logo os olhos n'aleivosa,
Que, em vez de me tratar com meigo agrado,
Tinha nas faces o desdem pintado.
Pasmando da mudança repentina,
Lhe disse: amado bem, cara Urselina,
Tu comigo tão aspera? Eu ignoro
Em que pude aggravar quem tanto adoro.
Isto dizendo, avizinhei-me a ella,
Que estava ao pé da rustica janella,
E da térna pergunta não fez caso,
Nem o rosto voltou, e olhando acaso
Á proxima Cabana de Nigélla,
Vi encostado Inálio á porta della
Olhar para Urselina, a Deos dizer-lhe,
E sem pejo a Cruel corresponder-lhe
C'um doce riso, hum gesto namorado,
De amantes expressões acompanhado.
Fervendo-me no peito o amor, e a ira,
Logo, logo em pedaços fiz a Lira,
E em mil imprecações, em mil queixumes
O furor exhalei dos meus ciumes,
Ameaçando a infiel, que eu me vingava
No odioso Rival, que me affrontava,
Se huma satisfação, que Inálio visse,
Logo o meu pundonor não ressarcisse.
Prometeo-me, que sim, mas de repente
A meus olhos se esconde, e vai contente
O lérdo, o baixo Amante encher de gloria,
Que não cabia em si pela victoria,
Que a peor das traições lhe tinha dado.
Fiquei louco, fiquei desesperado,
Contemplando este assombro nunca visto
Nem na imaginação. Não pára nisto
Daquella ingrata a pérfida baixeza:
De novas fúrias cruelmente acceza,
Procura Aónio, inerte Pegureiro
Que he o riso da gente no Terreiro
Quando sahe a bailar, a cada passo
Se esquece da harmonia, e do compasso,
Sendo falto de prendas, e de sizo
Como o louco Magálio, o rude Anfrizo.
Urselina lhe diz, que me incitasse
A que a Choça de Jonio abandonasse,
Persuadindo-me, emfim, que não devia
Presenciar a affronta, que soffria.
Acreditei o indigno Conselheiro,
E sahi da Cabana, onde primeiro
Tinha logrado os mimos da perjura,
Que assim desenganou minha ternura.
Ah genio desleal, fallaz, perverso!
Daquillo, que pensei, como és diverso!
Ai! Não me allucinava o meu ciume,
Era mais do que justo o meu queixume,
Quando (triste de mim!) quando julgava
Que Inálio, inda que simples, te agradava!
Accusei-te mil vezes de fingida,
De que a elle querias vêr-te unida
Em laços de Hymenêo; mas tu negaste
Sempre o que hoje sem pejo declaraste.
Traidora! Eu não dizia, eu não jurava,
Que o meu socego ao teu sacrificava!
Ah! Porque me não déste o desengano,
Que eu te pedia, Coração tyranno?
Se Inálio, porque tem Campos, e Gados,
Numerosos Casaes, amplos Montados,
Attrahe esse teu genio interesseiro,
E eu, posto que leal, que verdadeiro,
De clara geração, de sangue honrado,
Caducos, frageis bens não devo ao Fado,
E por isso não posso no teu peito
Produzir da ternura o doce effeito;
Que razão te obrigou a acarinhar-me,
E de hum fingido amor capacitar-me?
Coração, em perfidias atolado,
Impia, se o não tivesse inda creado
A vingadora Mão de Jove Eterno,
Devia para ti crear o Inferno.

Castiga-lhe a traição, e o fingimento
Lançando-a n'um profundo esquecimento.
Que mais satisfação, que mais vingança

Que ver expósta a pérfida Pastora
Ao ludibrio geral? Huma traidora,
Huma féra, huma ingrata, inda que bella,
Não merece a paixão, que tens por ella.
Pondera, que não foste injuriado
De seu duro desprezo inesperado,
Que o feminil capricho extravagante
Não te deslustra o mérito brilhante.
Nenhum, nenhum Pastor n'Aldêa ignora,
Que essa, que te deixou, foi atégora
Carinhosa comtigo, e fez patente
Sua correspondencia a toda a Gente:
Demonstrações em público te dava
De amorosa paixão, mas não te amava:
Baixo costume, natural fraqueza
He que a fez parecer de amor acceza;
Aquella alma não arde, não se inflama,
A todos corresponde, a ninguem ama.
Bem se vio com Bersálio, e com Laurénio
Seu inconstante, seu voluvel genio:
Té no mais desprezivel dos Pastores
He capaz de empregar seus vis amores,
Nunca soube escolher, tudo lhe agrada,
E inda que astutamente infatuada
Faça crer aos Amantes o contrario,
He já sabido seu caracter vario.
Isto em teu coração gravado fique,
E não queiras, Pastor, maior despique:
Se atégora calei quanto te digo,
Foi por não te affligir, prezado Amigo.
Pouco importa perder quem nada valle.
Contente-te, que toda a Aldêa falle
Contra a sua imprudente aleivosia,
Que, se pensasse bem no que o fazia,
Jámais o falso Monstro, que te deixa,
Fechára a tudo os olhos como feixa.
Deveria lembrar-se a fementida
De que a sua affeição foi conhecida,
De que inda em tuas mãos tens os penhores
De seus furtivos, tacitos favores,
Para não te obrigar com tal injúria
A que dos zelos a violenta furia
Despedaçasse hum véo mysterioso,
Hum véo tão necessario como honroso.
Mas verás se mais hora menos hora
Não he punida a infiel Pastora:
Doiradas esperanças lisongeiras
Nutrem-lhe idéas vãs, e interesseiras;
Mas Inálio he como ella ambicioso,
E só deseja hum Hymenêo lucroso,
Que lhe farte a cubiça, os bens lhe augmente:
Elle proprio mo disse, elle não mente,
Que a sua natural simplicidade
Não póde mascarar a sã verdade.
Eia, pois, cesse o pranto, enxuga o rosto,
Adora a Providencia em teu desgosto,
Não delires, Pastor, não desesperes,
Que és feliz em saber quem são Mulheres.

Se da Fortuna o meu Rival sentíra
A triste, perniciosa variedade,
Se a violencia de horrivel Tempestade
Lhe derribasse as férteis Oliveiras,
Se o fogo lhe engolisse as Sementeiras,
Se a Chêa lhe afogasse os nedios Gados,
Verias em desdens, e em desagrados
Mudar-se logo o amor, que finge a astuta,
Que de negra cubiça a voz escuta:
Tu a verias outra vez comigo
As chammas assoprar do affecto antigo,
Mendigando razões para applacar-me,
Para me convencer, para enganar-me.
Mas ah paixão! Teu ímpeto reprime,
E busque-se vingança igual ao crime.
Ritália bella, encanto dos Pastores,
Merece meus suspiros, meus amores:
Com ella fui mil vezes desatento,
Negando-lhe o devido acatamento
Por cumprir o preceito rigoroso
De Urselina infiel, que no enganoso,
No detestavel peito encerra, e nutre
Da venenosa Inveja o feio Abutre,
Porque a meiga Ritália he mais do que ella
Branda, risonha, delicada, e bella
Quanto he mais agradavel, mais formosa
Que as outras flores a punícea rosa.
Ritália desde agora o lindo objecto
Será do meu fiel, constante affecto:
Arrebatado em extasis de gosto,
Louvores de seus olhos, de seu rosto
Farei voar nas azas da ternura,
E assim me vingarei d'huma perjura.
Ella, por timbre meu, o escute, o saiba,
E o Coração no peito lhe não caiba
De inveja, de furor: eu, entretanto,
Troque em placido riso o triste pranto,
E a fria indifferença, com que intento
Recompensar-lhe o torpe fingimento,
Até tão alto gráo nesta alma creça,
