Decoració (Platja. A dreta, formant bastidor, les popes de varies
barques assegudes sobre de pals, amb les veles esteses a soleiar-se. A
esquerra la barraca dels palers, rústicament miserable però pintoresca.
El mar, que se suposa a dreta, dona volta cap al fons a on se fa visible
entre algunes altres barques d'últim terme.)
## Escena primera
(Gibert i Quirze) (Estàn recullint i cargolant la corda d'una barca que
acaba d'entrar. Quirze xiula alegrement l'himne de Riego.)
Gibert: Calla una mica, si pots.
Quirze: Ara ho heu dit tot; si pogués.
Gibert: Sembles un merlot, com hi ha dena! Ja't tinc ficat a les
orelles.
Quirze: Potser si que ving de niçaga de merlot.
Gibert: Per mi, van fer-te xiulant.
Quirze: Per mi també. (Xiula.) I mireu: si no pogués xiular, i tot lo
que xiulo en un dia se'm quedés dintre del pap... no sé si ho pairía. No
us diré sinó que quan soc a missa, mentre el rector celebra, Déu Nostre
Senyor sab lo que pateixo per aguantar-me la xiulera; però això sí, tan
bon punt aixequen Nostre Amo, que romp a tocar l'orga i no hi ha por de
que'l rector em senti... (Romp a xiular furiosament.)
Gibert: Rès, algun mal desitj que degué tindre ta mare.
## Escena II
(Els mateixos i Ventureta)
Ventureta: (per l'esquerra) Bon dia, palers.
Quirze: Hola, Ventureta. Vols que te'n xiuli una de ben ressalada com
tu? (Es posa a xiular una americana.)
Ventureta: Vés allà, burinot.
Gibert: (encenent la pipa) Sí, sí! Tant és que li digues salve com
santa.
Ventureta: Que ja han tornat totes les barques?
Gibert: Gairebé que sí. No deu mancar més que... (Mirant amunt i avall
de la platja.) Mira, no manca més que la barca del Cinto.
Quirze: (rient) Sí, dòna, sí; no veus que encara fem tots la cara
alegra?
Ventureta: Què vols dir, amb això?
Quirze: Que encara no ha entrat "la barca dels afligits".
Ventureta: (sospirant) Ah, ja!
Quirze: I sí; la barca dels afligits, que en dic jo; la barca dels
tristos, dels malcarats, dels sorruts, dels... Déu me perdoni! Si no
sembla sinó que en aqueixa barca hi portin els sants olis a un malalt
que's mor de tristesa.
Gibert: Es qu'és aixís mateix, Cristo em valga!
Quirze: Com que sí! Què redimontri els hi passa, a ton pare i a ton
cosí?
Ventureta: Què sé jo! Potser els ho ha encomanat el Cinto.
Gibert: Jo no sé si el patró els ho ha encomanat an ells o ells al
patró.
Quirze: Oh, al patró i als seus dos bordegaços, perque de tots ells no
sé quin és el que fa més cara d'açota-cristos.
Gibert: Per mi o han menjat pa sense sal ---que diuen que dóna
tristesa--- o els en passa alguna de molt grossa.
Quirze: Es que potser fa una mesada que ni aixequen els ulls de terra ni
obren els llavis per dir-se ase ni bestia. Per mi els han donat alguna
mala cosa.
Gibert: No t'ha dit rès a tu ton pare, que't puga posar sobre el tantum?
Ventureta: Rès; fa cosa d'un mes que, com qui diu, no li he sentit la
veu.
Gibert: Vés allà! Què'm contaràs a mi, gatasauma!
Ventureta: Vos ho juro per aquesta creu. En sabeu alguna cosa vós,
Gibert? Doncs jo menos.
Quirze: I per què no li preguntes?
Ventureta: Si estic cansada de treure el fel per la boca! Que us penseu
que he bregat poc? Perque, vaja, no li havía vist mai aixís el pare; si
sempre havía sigut d'un tarannà de tirar-s'ho tot a l'esquena.
Gibert: Ja és prou estrany!
Quirze: I ton cosí?
Ventureta: Vaia un altre! Abans sempre estava per riure i xerrotejar;
semblava un niu de gafarrons; i ara...
Quirze: Sí, ara sembla un ofici de cos present.
Ventureta: Doncs tant al un com al altre: "què us passa?... Què
teniu?..." Déu t'en darà! "Què no us trobeu bé?... Què us n'han feta
alguna?..." ---"Cuida't de tu!"
Quirze: Doncs jo també, tant al patró com als seus xicots, no és pas que
no'ls hagi ficat els dits a la boca!... Com si els fiqués en un pou
mort.
Gibert: Sí, i que ja comences a fer-ne un gra massa amb les teves
bromes; i el dia que al Cinto, o al Cintet, o al Ciset, els hi pugi la
mosca al naç...
Quirze: Bé prou amunt que li tenen!
Gibert: (mirant a dreta) Mireu-se'ls, ja arriben.
Ventureta: Alabat siga Déu!
Gibert: Ansia, a preparar els pals. (Cridant cap a l'esquerra.) Manel!
acosta la parella. (Aplega un pal de terra i desapareix per la dreta. Se
senten les esquelles dels bous acostar-se per l'esquerra.)
Quirze: Aquí tenim els enterra-morts. (Aplega un altre pal i desapareix
per la dreta.)
Gibert: (tornant) Lo qu'és aquèts si que no espantaràn els peixos amb la
seva xerrameca. (Aplega un altre pal i torna a desaparèixer per la
dreta.)
Quirze: Ah no; ja m'hi jugo que cap d'ells ha obert la boca, dés de que
han marxat. Vaja, per mi els han donat alguna mala cosa.
(Recull la taia i desapareix per la dreta.)
Ventureta: Que Déu Nostre Senyor els hi torni la paraula i com més aviat
millor, perque això no és viure!... Es que sí que faríen pensar que'ls
han embruixat a tots cinc. Jesús, María, Josep! (Se senya.)
## Escena III
(Ventureta i tots els demés personatges com s'anirá indicant) (Apareix
Gibert i estén un pal a terra; darrera d'ell apareix Quirze i n'estén un
altre dos passos més enllà. Entretant es veu bellugar-se tot al través
de l'escena la corda que se suposa va estirant la barca. Finalment
apareix la popa de la barca relliscant per damunt dels pals fins a
posar-se al mitj de l'escena. A dalt de la barca Cinto, Cintet, Ciset,
Mero i Tano, enfeinats, sorruts, treballotejant silenciosament en arriar
la vela, estibar cordes, aixecar coves del fons, etc. Mentrestant els
dos palers treuen el palànqui de la popa, recullen el llivant, etc.
Ventureta s'acosta tímidament a la barca. Els cinc sardinalers en van
saltant l'un darrera l'altre, per diferents indrets. Gran pausa.)
Quirze: (per sí mateix) Ja tenim aquí la professó de la Bona Mort.
Gibert: Muixoni; no'ls trenquis les oracions... si no vols que't
trenquin alguna altre cosa, que no estàn per brocs.
Ventureta: (a Mero) Bon dia, pare. Com ha anat això?
Mero: (sorrut) Cuida't de tu.
(Fins que s'indiqui, els cinc personatges de la barca tindràn l'aire
sorrut, parlen a morrades i sense mirar als seus interlocutors.)
Ventureta: (apart) La cançó de sempre! Veig que no ha mudat el vent.
Quirze: (abocant-se a la barca) Sembla que no ha anat malament, fa?
Cinto: Millor podía anar.
Quirze: D'aquest pà feu rosegons?
Cinto: En faig lo que'n faig.
Gibert: (abocant-s'hi també) Alça, veig que ja heu anat desmallant tot
venint.
Cinto: I doncs, que volíes que joguessim al dòmino?
Gibert: Déu n'hi dó! Què va que heu fet de dotze a tretze arrobes de
sardina? Fa, Cintet?
Cintet: No soc cap romana per pesar-les.
Quirze: I tu, què hi dius, Ciset?
Ciset: Busca-ho.
Quirze: I tu, Tano? (No contesta.) Tano, ep! Es pot saber?...
Tano: A Salamanca.
Ventureta: (a mitja veu) Déu hi faci més que nosaltres.
Quirze: (també a mitja veu) Ora pro nobis.
(Mentres els altres cinc van feinejant silenciosament entorn de la
barca, treient-ne coves, xarxes, etc.. Gibert i Quirze s'aparten i tot
aixugant-se la suor i abaixant-se els pantalons se dirigeixen a la
barraca.)
Gibert: Vaja, ja estem, gracies a Déu. Anem a esmorzar que a mi ja'm
criden. (Entra.)
Quirze: Es lo millor que podem fer. Ets servida, Ventureta?
Ventureta: Gracies, Quirze; qu'aprofiti.
Quirze: (girant-se als demés) I vosaltres? (Ningú li respòn.) Ni mai.
(Se n'entra a la barraca tot saltant i xiulant.)
## Escena IV
(Ventureta, Cinto, Mero, Cintet, Ciset i Tano)
Ventureta: (a Mero) Voleu que us porti alguna cosa?
Mero: Els anys, si per cas.
Ventureta: La cistella, al menos, si no voleu donar-me el saltambarc.
Mero: (cridant) A casa, que hi tens més feina qu'aquí!
Ventureta: Com volgueu, però...
Mero: No m'has sentit?
Ventureta: No us enfadeu, home...
Mero: Alça, a apriar l'esmorzar!
Ventureta: (anant-se'n) Ja vaig, home, ja vaig... (Surt.)
Cinto: (a Cintet i Ciset) Vosaltres comenceu a passar a l'estació.
Cintet: (a Ciset, agafant un cove per una nança) Au, agarra!
Ciset: (a mitja veu, agafant l'altre nança) Mal llamp et baldi!...
Cintet: A qui té de baldar?
Ciset: Ja m'entenc jo.
Cintet: Jo també i callo.
Ciset: Fas bé. (Surten per l'esquerra.)
Mero: Tano! (Signant-li l'altre cove.)
Tano: Escolteu, oncle, are que aquells no hi són.
Mero: Per orgues estic; au, agarra!
Tano: Maliatsiga jo... i ell... i ella... i ells...
Mero: I tots. (Agafen el cove cada un per una nança i se'n van per
l'esquerra. Al passar prop de Cinto, li diu a mitja veu.) Ja torno.
Cinto: Tant me fa.
## Escena V
(Cinto, després Quirze)
Cinto: (passejant-se) Sembla mentida!... Un fill! Ex! (Escup.) D'això en
diuen fills... Té raó el ditxo: crieu fills... ex!... I jo, jo mateix!
un pare!... D'això en diuen pares?... Mentida! Això no és un pare ni és
rès! Ex! Altre temps si que n'hi havíen de pares! Ja haguera pogut jo,
al meu de pare... vaja un! De la primera plantofada m'haguera fet saltar
més dents i caixals que no m'havía posat a la boca Santa Polonia!...
Però avui dia... ni pares ni fills, mal foc els cremi tots! Ex! (Escup.
Segueix passejant-se)
Quirze: (sortint de la barraca) Escolteu, Cinto, què teniu...?
Cinto: (sense aturar-se) Tinc lo que tinc.
Quirze: Home, no us escalabrineu; si encara no sabeu què anava a dir.
Cinto: Ni ganes.
Quirze: Venía a dir-vos si teniu mistos, que'l Gibert els ha acabat i jo
no'n gasto.
Cinto: I a mi què?
Quirze: I aquell redimontri de foc sembla que jugui a no voler-se
encendre. Qualsevol diría que...
Cinto: (butxaquejant) Té i calla, xerraire!
Quirze: Déu vos ho pac, perque fa una hora que m'estic treient el fetge
per la boca, bufa que bufa i venta que venta...
Cinto: I que't creus que xerrant se t'encendrà?
Quirze: Home, jo ho deia per...
Cinto: No necessito saber-ho. Té. (Li tira la capça de mistos.)
Quirze: (cullint-la, apart) Així's tiren els guants al rei. (Alt.) Vos
els torno desseguida. (Entra a la barraca.)
## Escena VI
(Cinto i Mero)
Mero: (per l'esquerra, molt moix) Gracies a Déu que estem sols.
Cinto: (seguint passejant-se) L'home que creu en Déu no ho està mai de
sol.
Mero: Si Déu no l'abandona.
Cinto: També és cert.
(Pausa. Es passejen tots dos en sentit oposat.)
Mero: (de cop) Hem de parlar.
Cinto: En tinc molt poques ganes.
Mero: Menos en tinc jo.
Cinto: Doncs calla, que per la boca mor el peix.
Mero: Just, i en boca tancada no hi entren mosques... però boca que no
parla Déu no l'ou i qui llengua té a Roma va.
Cinto: (plantant-se) Que tens enfit de paraules?
Mero: (plantant-se també) Potser sí; potser ja és hora de que parlem
d'una vegada.
Cinto: Potser ja hem parlat massa.
Mero: O massa poc.
Cinto: Bé, què hi ha?
Mero: Això et pregunto a tu.
Cinto: A mi?
Mero: Doncs a quí?
Cinto: An ell.
Mero: A quí, ell?
Cinto: Al bordegaç... al Cintet.
Mero: Amb ell no tinc de tenir-hi cap paraula.
Cinto: Jo menos.
Mero: No t'entenc.
Cinto: Jo sí.
Mero: Bé devíes dir-li...
Cinto: Sí, home, sí; ja fa potser una mesada.
Mero: I ell, què't va respondre?
Cinto: Sabs què'm va respondre?... Doncs va tenir la poca latxa de no
respondre'm rès. Encara l'espero.
Mero: I tu?...
Cinto: Jo? Ni una paraula més. Un pare és un pare i no té de rebaixar-se
per un fill. Què s'ha pensat aquell mocós! Si molt enhorabona, veient
que no'm responía li hagués romput l'ànima que l'aguanta, tot estaría
arreglat.
Mero: Oh, tu ho dius...
Cinto: Perque és. Però ei: lo dit, dit. No vàrem convenir-hi tu i jo?
Mero: Sí, però...
Cinto: No vàrem quedar conformes tu i jo?
Mero: Sí, però...
Cinto: (amb força) No era la nostra santa voluntat?
Mero: Sí, però jo no comptava...
Cinto: Doncs prou! Ni una paraula més.
Mero: Però, ja veuràs, Cinto, devegades...
Cinto: Prou! he dit prou. Un home no té de tenir més que una paraula.
Està dit? doncs, dit i prou! (Torna a passejar-se.)
Mero: Però, escolta, Cinto...
Cinto: Prou! Ja està dit tot. Ell vindrà, vaia si vindrà! No'n caldría
d'altre sinó que no vingués!...
Mero: Però si no'm deixes parlar!...
Cinto: Es que ja està dit tot. Ell vindrà, vaia si vindrà! (S'en va cap
a la barca, en treu el saltambarc, se'l tira a l'espatlla i se'n va tot
botzinant.)
## Escena VII
(Mero sol, després Tano)
Mero: (passejant-se) Es clar, ja ho veig... en part té raó: un pare és
un pare i no té de rebaixar-se per un fill. Jo també soc un pare... i
tampoc ting de rebaixar-me per una... Es clar, prou! Ja està dit: ella
parlarà!... Per xò, si ens haguessim esplicat els uns i els altres...
tal vegada no'ns trobaríem com ens trobem. Però són tan aixuts, sembla
que tinguin por de malgastar saliva... Ja't dic jo que puja un
jovent!...
Tano: (per l'esquerra) Ah, sou vós, oncle?
Mero: (passejant-se) No; un altre.
Tano: (no sabent com començar) Maleitsiga!
Mero: Amén.
Tano: Vaja, s'ha acabat. Ting de parlar-vos.
Mero: A saber si ting ganes d'escoltar-te.
Tano: I pla que m'escoltareu.
Mero: Podé no.
Tano: Doncs podé sí!
Mero: Mira, Tano, tu estàs molt per raons i jo no ho estic gens.
Tano: (impacientat) Maleitsiga!...
Mero: (per sí mateix passejant) Es clar que això no són pares... Com que
no que no soc un pare...
Tano: No que no ho sou un pare. Jo us juro que si la Ventureta fos filla
meva...
Mero: (plantant-se en sec) Què'n tens que dir de la Ventureta?
Tano: Rès de mal, ei, però...
Mero: Doncs no te la posis a la boca.
Tano: Es que si la Ventureta en lloc de ser-me cosina em fos germana...
Mero: Què faríes?
Tano: Ja hauría fet sortir el Sant Cristo gros.
Mero: I qui ets tu, per... Ja veuràs, Tano, entre pare i filla ningú té
dret a ficar-s'hi, som-hi?
Tano: Però quan un pare...
Mero: (quadrant-se) Què'n tens que dir de mi?
Tano: Rès de mal tampoc, però...
Mero: Doncs calla.
Tano: Es que de tant callar ja s'em comencen a fer trenyines a la
gargamella.
Mero: I a mi de tant sentir-te ja s'em fan timbales a les orelles. (Li
gira l'esquena.)
Tano: (per sí mateix) Maleitsiga! (Amb rabia.) I tot justament un
castellà!...
Mero: (per sí mateix) No, que no soc un pare... un calsaces, soc!
Ve-t'ho aquí, un calsaces!...
Tano: (per sí mateix) Qualsevol altre que fos, santa i bona María!...
Però un castellà! Redéu! Tot justament un castellà!...
## Escena VIII
(Mero, Tano i Ventureta)
Ventureta: (per l'esquerra) I doncs, que no veniu a esmorzar?
Mero: Venim o no venim. Cuida't de tu.
Ventureta: Es que quan arribareu ja se us el hauràn menjat les mosques.
Mero: Bon profit.
Ventureta: Que no teniu gana?
Mero: Ting lo que ting.
Ventureta: I tu, Tano?
Tano: Andana!
Ventureta: Però, quina aranya us ha picat? Pare, per l'amor de Déu,
parleu d'una vegada; treieu-me d'angunies, com cent sants del cel! Si
teniu algun ressentiment contra mi, digueu-m'ho, que parlant les
persones s'entenen i no fent mala cara.
Mero: Cadascú fa la que té.
Tano: (maligne) Ja sé jo qui la fa més bona.
Ventureta: (sorpresa) Què vols dir?
Tano: Lo que he dit.
Ventureta: Que'm matin si t'entenc.
Tano: Ja m'entenc jo.
Mero: I jo també, m'entenc.
Ventureta: Ditxosos vosaltres! Mireu que entre tots acabareu per fer-me
girar el cervell! Això no hi ha paciencia que ho aguanti; ja fa massa
temps que dura!... Això no és viure... (Ploriquejant.)
Mero: Ploralles, are? Llagrimetes?... Vet-aquí tot lo que sabeu fer les
dònes... M'en vaig per no veure't. (Se'n va per l'esquerra.)
Tano: I jo per no sentir-te. (Tot anant-se'n.) Un castellà!... Tot
justament un castellà, maleitsiga!... (Surt. Pausa.)
Ventureta: Vêt-ens-aquí tan avençats com abans. Déu meu, Déu meu! però,
què'ls he fet jo?... Verge santa del Remei, toqueu-los el cor,
deslligueu-los la llengua. (Amaga la cara en el devantal.)
## Escena IX
(Ventureta; per l'esquerra Cintet seguit a distancia de Ciset)
Ventureta: Ai, sou vosaltres? Alabat sigui Déu! Potser de vosaltres en
treuré una bona paraula.
Cintet: (molt brusc) A mi no'm contis rès: això al pare.
Ventureta: Que t'he fet alguna mala obra?... Que t'he agraviat en alguna
cosa sense voler-ho?
Cintet: Tu ho sabràs.
Ventureta: Jo no, pobra de mi.
Cintet: Doncs, jo tampoc.
Ventureta: I doncs, perquè'm fas aquest paper, que ni't dignes mirar-me
la cara?
Cintet: Jo?... Vés a contar-ho al pare. (S'en va cap a la barca.)
Ventureta: I tu, Ciset, tu no estàs pas enfadat amb mi, fa? Tu sempre
m'has volgut bé; no hi ha hagut pas rès entre tu i jo...
Ciset: Conta-ho al Cintet; ell t'ho sabrà dir.
Ventureta: Però no veus que'l Cintet sembla tancat amb pany i clau, com
el vostre pare... i com el meu i com mon cosí. Si sembla que tots els
d'aquesta barca heu perdut la paraula...
Ciset: Ja veuràs: el noi gran sempre és el gran; jo no só més que'l xic.
Ventureta: I què vols dir amb això?
Ciset: Que no só rés!... El noi xic! Un ningú!
Ventureta: I ara, d'on surts? De què estàs ofès?
Ciset: De rès, si no dic rès jo. Ell és el gran.
Ventureta: No dius rès però dius massa. Qualsevol que't sentís es
figuraría que te n'he feta alguna!...
Ciset: L'has feta... o no l'has feta. I prou.
Ventureta: No, prou, no. Vui que t'espliquis.
Ciset: Que t'ho espliqui aquèll. (Apartant-se.)
Ventureta: Que no'l sents, Cintet? De què se les heu ton germà?
Cintet: (des de la barca) Ell s'ho sabrà.
Ventureta: Reina del cel! Acabareu per fer-me tornar boja entre uns i
altres!
Cintet: Aixís et tancaràn.
Ciset: I a mi també.
Cintet: I a tots.
Ventureta: Es que sí que sembla que tots plegats hagueu perdut el
judici! Com hi ha món, cinc homes sou en aquesta barca i sembla que a
tots cinc vos hagi tocat un mal aire. (Se'n va plorant per l'esquerra.)
## Escena X
(Cintet i Ciset) (Recolzats en la barca, però apartats l'un de l'altre.
Pausa.)
Ciset: (de cop) Mala andanada! (Baixa al prosceni.)
Cintet: (també baixant) I cent andanades... i mil milions de rengles
d'andanades!
Ciset: (amb despreci) De què te les heus tu?
Cintet: De lo que'm sé, i basta.
Ciset: Doncs guarda-t'ho.
Cintet: Com no t'ho guardes tu?
Ciset: (agressiu) No caldría sinó que fins el dret de renegar volguessis
llevar-me.
Cintet: Jo no't llevo rès.
Ciset: Mica!
Cintet: Què? què't llevo? Digues.
Ciset: No haig de dir rès, jo; no hi tinc cap dret. Jo soc el noi xic.
Cintet: I què vols dir amb això?
Ciset: Que tu ets el gran.
Cintet: Mentres Déu vulgui.
Ciset: Per molts anys i mal profit te faci.
Cintet: Això de mal profit tu sabràs perque ho dius.
Ciset: I tu també ho sabs.
Cintet: Que'm pengin.
Ciset: Doncs que't pengin i no parlem més, perque potser en diría massa.
Cintet: (provocatiu) Aboca, home, aboca!
Ciset: Mira, Cintet, quan un home té les sangs fregides... no li fiquis
els dits a la boca.
Cintet: Que mocegues?
Ciset: Potser sí.

son pare. Cambi brusc.) El pare! (Queda com petrificat. Ciset se'n va
tot roncejant darrera la barca.)

Cinto: (amb solemnitat, després d'una pausa) Què hi ha del pare?... (Amb
força, mirant-lo fit a fit.) Què li vols a ton pare?
Cintet: (atuït) Rès.
Cinto: Ah, rès? Està bé. Es dir que... "rès". Això és tot lo que has
pensat amb tant temps?... Molt bé; no'n parlem més.
Cintet: (fent un esforç) Escolteu, pare...
Cinto: No. No has dit "rès"? Doncs, rès, ni una paraula més.
Cintet: No dieu vos mateix que un home no té de tenir més que una
paraula?
Cinto: Per xò mateix.
Cintet: Doncs bé, jo l'he donada.
Cinto: Jo també l'he donada. I ara per mor de tu... Prou, ja ho has dit
tot. Dés d'avui feste compte que no tens pare.

Mero: (amb resolució) Cinto.
(A partir d'aquest moment tots els personatges van animant-se de més en
més fins al final.)
Cinto: (també amb resolució) Oh i que vens bé, Mero.
Mero: No puc més: ting d'esbotzar.
Cinto: I fins jo. Em veus bé?
Mero: Prou.
Cinto: Doncs bé, Mero em cau la cara de vergonya.
Mero: A mi també.
Cinto: Ja no soc pare.
Mero: Jo tampoc.
Cinto: Soc un ningú.
Mero: I jo... menos que un ningú.
Cinto: Vina aquí. Què vaig dir-te jo? "Què't sembla, Mero, si caséssim a
la Ventureta amb el meu noi gran?"
Mero: I què't vaig respondre, jo? "Per mi, a bodes me convides."
Cinto: I què vaig afegir jo? "Fet!"
Mero: I jo? "Fet!"
Cinto: Doncs bé: ho dic an aquest pillardaç, an aquest parrac, an
aquest... microbi, i, sabs què'm va respondre? Rès, no'm va respondre!
En lloc d'alegrar-se'n i dir-me "gracies, pare" i besar-me les mans...
se m'ensopeix, acota el cap, es grata el clatell... i em planta sense ni
dir-me "Jesús". A mi que havía empenyat la meva paraula!... I no vaig
saber-li rompre la ossada que l'aguanta.
Mero: (respirant) Oh, si és aixís...
Cinto: Vaja, net i clar; que no la vol a la Ventureta; que'n tan poc la
té an ella com a la paraula de son pare.
Mero: (esclatant de satisfacció) I fins ara no't recordes de dir-m'ho?
Cinto: No gosava... Esperava trobar la ocasió...
Mero: Poc sabs tu el pes que'm lleves del damunt! Perque has de saber
que quan jo vaig dir-li a la Ventureta lo que havíem tractat tu i jo, en
lloc de saltar i ballar d'alegría i de dir-me "lo que heu fet està per
ben fet!", m'acala els ulls, em fa el morret, s'em tomba d'esquena i em
respòn.... sabs què'm va respondre, a mi, a son pare?
Cinto: Què't va respondre?
Mero: Em va respondre: "ja'n parlarem". No sé com... Ah, ja'n parlarem?
Doncs no, senyora, no'n parlarem més ---vaig dir-me--- ting donada la
paraula al Cinto... i paraula és paraula.
Cinto: (que s'ha anat animant per graus) De manera que aixís...
Mero: Es clar, tota vegada que'l Cintet tampoc la vol an ella...
Cintet: (que ha anat acostant-se atret per la conversa dels dos pares,
es planta resoltament entre ells completament transfigurat)
Entenguem-nos, Mero jo no ting en poc a la Ventureta; jo l'aprecío molt;
jo la estimo en tot lo que val, ---i cert, val molt--- però... jo també
ting la paraula donada, i fa temps que li ting! I de primer morir que
tornar endarrera! Estic emparaulat amb l'Esperanceta del Nofre, i no
ting de desnonar-me ni per la reina de totes les Amèriques.
Ciset: (que ha anat escoltant amb alegría creixent les paraules del seu
germà, es planta d'un salt al mitj d'ells) Cintet, torna-ho a dir!
Cintet: (sorprès) El què?
Ciset: Això que acabes de dir ara: que no la vols a la Ventureta... que
no l'estimes...
Cintet: I és clar que no.
Ciset: (abraçant-lo) Ai, Cintet, ets tot un home! Em deixaría fer troços
per tu.
Cintet: I això? què t'agafa?
Ciset: (boig d'alegría) Reina santa! Poc sabs tu lo que m'has fet patir
d'esperit aquets dies! Però ara que sé que ni tu vols a la Ventureta, ni
la Ventureta et vol a tu...

(Els mateixos i Tano) (Aquest ha sortit, un moment abans, per
l'esquerra. Entretant va acostant-se Ventureta. Els dos palers han
sortit a la porta de la barraca.)
Tano: (amb ímpetu) I no ho sabs perque no'l vol? I vos, oncle, voleu
saber-ho perque no'l vol?... Perque en vol un altre! Nèt! I qui,
maleitsiga? Un castellà! Tot justament un castellà!
Ciset: (aterrat) Què dius ara?
Ventureta: (aturdida) Que s'empatolla aquet trapacer?
Tano: Sí, sí! Que't penses que ting els ulls no més per fer bonic? Has
de saber que si ton pare dorm jo vetllo.
Ventureta: Ai, Verge Santa!
Tano: Ja ho só vist, ja!
Ventureta: Però, què has vist? digues.
Ciset: (frenètic) Acaba d'una vegada!
Tano: Que't fa l'aleta en Xanxas... Sí, sí, en Xanxas, el cabo de
carrabiners, que amb l'escusa de vigilar que'ls coves de peix no s'ens
tornin paquets de picadura, sempre ronda al teu voltant com si fossis
contrabando.
Ventureta: A mi?
Tano: A tu, a tu... I que't diu unes coses més ensucrades!... i en
castellà, maleitsiga!
Ventureta: I què'n tinc de fer den Xanxas!
Tano: Què'n tens de fer? Vês si en tens de fer que per xò no vols al
Cintet, perque no du botons daurats ni sab dir paraules ensucrades. Per
xò no l'has volgut.
Ciset: Mala reïra!... Més m'estimaría que m'haguessis fet l'ànima a
troços!
Ventureta: (esclatant) Doncs bé, ja que tots heu parlat, no vui ser
menos. Perdona, Cintet, jo t'aprecio molt, però si no't vui a tu... és
perque vui a un altre.
Tano: Ho veieu? En Xanxas, maleitsiga!
Ventureta: Vés al infern, tu i ell.
Ciset: Doncs a quí?
Ventureta: A tu, beneit, a tu.
Ciset: (alerat) A mi?
Ventureta: (amb joia) A tu, curt de geni, pobre d'esperit! Això no has
conegut fa temps? Que no vaig fer-t'ho entendre prou per la festa major,
que amb mil escuses i mentides em vaig enginyar per no ballar més que
amb tu?
Ciset: (amb esclat) I és cert? Ai, Ventureta, vals tota la gloria del
cel!... Perquè no m'ho havíes dit mai això que'm dius ara? Perquè no vas
parlar abans?
Ventureta: Jo, tot justament? Tu eres el que havíes de parlar.
Ciset: Jo? Sabent que t'havíen promesa al Cintet? Si per cas era ell qui
havía de parlar, ja que no't volía.
Cintet: Jo? Això el pare, que va manegar-s'ho tot ell, sense ni
demanar-me el meu parer!
Cinto: Qui, jo? El Mero era el qui havía d'haver parlat desseguida.
Mero: Tot justament jo? I què sabía jo? (Pel Tano.) Aquest era el que
havía d'esbotzar la grua.
Tano: Jo? I a mi què'm feia! A mi no m'hi anava ni venía rès. Això sí,
el que se l'endugués un castellà ho tenía entravessat aquí. Ara... que
siga el Ciset tant se me'n dóna.
Cinto: Calleu tots.
Gibert: (rient) Al revés, parleu tots, parleu força, que aixís arribareu
a entendre-us.
Quirze: Aixís, aprofiteu-vos ara, que heu recobrat la paraula.
Cinto: (crit) Calleu, torno a dir-vos, que vui enraonar jo. Ja
