Torpan tupa, muuri oikeassa ja edustasänky vasemmassa nurkassa; ikkuna
keskelle seinää, patapenkki ikkunan alla, kehto lattialla, nukkuva
lapsimokkelo kehdossa.
KAISA (häärii kiireesti aamuaskareissa, Matin istuessa laiskasti
takkakivellä, piippunysä huulilla). Ja siinä sinä senkin ahkio taas
takapuoltas takkakivellä pitkin aamua hierrät. Minä yksin täs saan
olla hameis ja housuis ja häärätä jotta kieli vyön alla. (Tirkistää
kelloon.) Pykäisit päiväsi työksi edes tuon kellon, joka ei tierä
ajasta enempää kun sika pohjantährestä. (Ottaa vesiämpärin ja lähtee
ulos, mutta huudahtaa vielä mennessään oven raosta.) Täs saa olla kun
pussis.
MATTI (tekee työtä käskettyä, nousee penkille seinästä kelloa alas
ottaakseen, mutta kierähtääkin kellon kanssa lattialle kellelleen,
vielä penkillä olleen juuritaikinahulikan mukanaan tuoden ja siitä
itsensä taikinaan ryvettäen.) Voi äiteeni päiviä! (Tarkastaa itseään,
kengänpohjaan.) Sitä pegoonia on joka paikas. (Kätkeytyy pelokkaana
edustasänkyyn.) Ja mitä juuri se Kaisa nyt sanoo (yskii)... ja mihinkä
hornan kitaan se pejooni kätki sen viinapullon! (Tuskailee.) Mikä
tuota tyynyäkin vaivaa, joka on kuin kivisäkki! (Paiskoa kiukuissaan
tyynyn lattialle.) Ka, no, valehteleeko silmäni vai? (Iloisesti.) No
mutta voi herranpieksut, — täälläkö se pejooni olikin. (Nousee sängystä
viinapullo kädessä ja laulahtaa vetkutellen.)
»Eikä mua ilahuta mikään muu,
ei kukaan muu,
kun täysnäislasi ja
pullonsuu.»
(Ottaa tyynyn ja vie mukanaan sänkyyn lakaisin, jääden jälleen
makuulle.)
KAISA (tulee ulkoa tupaan, huomaa kaiken ja näkee taikinaisten
kengänjälkien johtavan sänkyyn). Voi käärmeen jäljet! (Hyökkää sängyn
luo, riipaisee edustan auki.) En minä olisi piitannutkaan, jos tuon
kellon särjit ja vaikka tuon juuritaikinahulikan kaarroit. Mutta kun
sinä viheliäinen menit vielä ja tuhrasit sen sängyn! (Samassa hän
huomaa lasista Maijan ja Sannan tupaa kohti tulevan.) Ka, no, tännekkö
nuo pahan ilman linnut taas luunsa vetää — senkin trullit! (Korjaa
hätäisesti paikkoja kuntoon, vielä Matille tiuskaisten.) Kyllä se on
niin, jotta panna sian erähä ja mennä itte perähä. (Maija ja Sanna
astuvat tupaan.) Ka, no, päivää, päivää! Mitä, valehteleeko silmäni vai
—. No voi herra hallitkoon, vielä teitäkin näkee. (Kättelevät.) Ainahan
ne elävän silmät näkee (itkunsekaisena) vaan kuolleen ei milloinkaan.
(Kaikki itkuisina.)
MAIJA (ystävällisenä). No, tulimme vain katsomaan, vieläkö teillä
eletään, kun ei enää koskaan kylillä näe.
SANNA. Niin, kun ei meilläkään ole käynyt herran aikaan. Jotta
ajattelin tulla katsomaan, mikä sen Kaisan nenään on oikein pistänyt.
KAISA. Eihän tästä paljon jouda sinne ei tänne, kun tuo äijäkin on
sellainen ja ollut tässä lahdin tekokin ja sen seitsemät.
MAIJA. Perjakanko löitte penkkiin? Eihän, se vanha lehmä enää taitanut
lypsääkään. (Katselee ympäri tupaa.)
MALJA. Eei — kyillä se lypsää vielä niin, ettei moni nuori pärjää..
Sian me tapoimme. (Laittaa kahvipannua takalle.)
MAIJA. Niin, miksei se lypsä — niin paljon kuin vaan viitsii lypsää
sitä. Kyllä se sika onkin niin hyödytöin elukka, ei se lypsä, ei se
muni, ei siitä saa villoja, se ei kelpaa muuta kuin syärä. (Akkain
silmät etsivät istuinta.)
KAISA. No mutta mitä te meinaatte? Istukaa, istukaa — jotta lakkaisitte
kasvamasta.
SANNA. Eei, eei, ei me istu — muuten vain tulimme.
MAIJA. Niin, tulimme vain, katsomaan, oletteko terveitä.
KAISA. Istutteko kohta! (Korjaa kahvipannun alle valkeaa.) Pian tämä
tästä tulee. (Maija istuutuu.)
SANNA (silmäilee kehtoa). Teillä on siinä niin komea miehen alku ja
niin isänsä näköinen kuin läpi silmäin vedetty. (Menee istumaan.)
KAISA (naurahtaen). Eihän sitä tierä —. Sitä jo näinkin vanhoilta voi
tulla kenen näköisiä sattuu. (Kaikki nauravat.)
SANNA. Eei maar — kyllä näkö sukuunsa vetää.
MAIJA. Niin, puusta herelmät tunnetaan, (Akat istuvat kädet sylissä,
peukalot toisiaan kiertäen: kengänkärjet naksuttavat lattiata vasten.)
KAISA (Matille sänkyyn). Nouse jo, senkin Jusu-Matti, kyllä maan alla
maata saat, jos vain häjyiltä rauhan saat. Mene pienimään puita.
(Korjailee valkeaa kahvipannun alla.)
MATTI (nousee ja kismii laiskasti, sytyttää rakasta piippuakin). Niin
onkosta nyt torstai vai perjantai? (Ottaa kirveen ja lähtee ulos.)
KAISA. Sunnuntai nyt on, ja sinulla raukalla kun teetetään pyhänäkin
työtä. (Katsoen akkoihin, samalla naurahtaen.) Kyllä se on niin, jotta
joll'en minä olisi edestä kengäs, takaa rauras, niin tästä elämästä ei
tulisi mitään. (Pyyhkii kuppia, laittaa pöytään.)
SANNA. Kun vain pysyisit tervesnä — vaikka lujaltahan näytätkin kuin
visatömppä.
MAIJA. Jopa hyvä lie — kyllä sinä tervesnä pysyt viimeiseen asti, ja
sitten kun se aika tulee — niin kaarut kahrelta jalaalta.
KAISA. Niin — ja kyllään se vooro minullekin tulee — kaatuuhan se
hevonenkin neljältä jalalta. Ja en minä nytkään niin rauran terve ole,
tuosta se ensin nuon viiloo ( osoittaa sormellaan pitkin ruumistaan)
ja sitte se laskee tuonne, ja sitten nuo linkut ajettuu ja noin ikään.
(Kaataa kahvia kuppeihin.) No tulkaa nyt, maistetaan miltä se tulee.
(Akat istuutuvat kahvipöytään.)
SANNA. Voi kun minä olen aina teilä kahvilla ja sinä et meillä kuin
reisun saras vuores.
MAIJA. Niin, ja minä, ja nyt en minä tule teille ennenkuin sinä olet
käynyt meillä.
KAISA. Sitä nisua on siinä vain niin kovin määrältä, mutta kastakaa se
mitä on. No pankaa nyt sulamaan ja kastakaa.
MAIJA. Ee, ei me kasta, antaa olla nyt vaan.
KAISA. Kastattako kohta! (Kynsii lonkkansa.) Mitä tuo tuollainen tietää!
SANNA (panee sokeria kuppiin). Ei, ei me kasta — olemme juuri kastanut.
KAISA. No, ei leili koskaan niin täynnä ole, jottei tappi mahdu. (Juo
itsekin.) Minä olen monasti juonut jotta silakat ovat sisälläni uineet,
mutta olen siltä kävellyt yhtä pystyä kuin ennenkin. (Samalla lyö
lonkkaansa.)
MATTI (tulee ulkoa puusylyksen kanssa, puut takan alle nakaten). Saas
nährä, piisaako tätä poutaa kuinka pitkältä. (Menee jälleen sänkyyn.)
KAISA. No aina Mikkeliin saakka, jos ei vain saretta tule.
MATTI.
Tuolta seekatun ämmältä ei enää koskaan saa kunnon vastausta — mikä sun
on prillannut!
KAISA (kaataa kahvia kuppiin, vie Matille sänkyyn). Makoomiehen
puheesta ei ole mitään. Tuos on tuo kuppini — kun sinua saa sänkyyn
passata kuin pirttikeetä, häpee, pitkä laiska.
SANNA. Kyllä sinulla on tuo mies niin hyvänlaatuinen ja tairollinen.
MAIJA. Niin — toisellainen karnaatti se on se meirän äijä, — äräjää
aina kuin koira.
KAISA. No se on niin siloinen ja lipoinen kuin sepänakan karvakenkä —
(katsoa muljauttaa sänkyyn).
SANNA (itkunsekaisesti). Se meirän äijä vainaa oli niin hyvänlaatuinen,
jotta ei parempaa. Sitä se äijävainaa piti niin pahana, kun se poika
lähti sinne maailman hartioille niin kovin nuorena ja kokemattomana.
Jotta aina sai murehtia, eikä paljo uskaltanut päästää mieleensäkään.
KAISA. Niin se on jotta: »Ah mik' ompi elomm' tää!'! Tuskavaiva
tuskan pääl. Työ ja meno levoton, silloin kosk' se paras on». (Akat
teettelevät itkua.) Juokaa nyt, kyllä tätä täältä tulee. (Kaataa kupit
täyteen.) Eihän ne tipat raavaassa ihmisessä tunnu.
MAIJA. Ei, ei me enää lisää juo.
KAISA. No ei lisä pahaa tee muussa kuin selkäänsä saannis. (Kaataa yhä
uusia kuppeja.)
MATTI. Tuo akka juo kahvia kuin haurevettä, eikä jaksa fälttiä vetää.
KAISA (vihaisena). Puhu sinä silloin kun sinulta kysytään ja sano
silloinkin jotta en minä tierä.
SANNA. Kyllä tämä nykymaailma on mennyt aivan viturahan. Ihmiset
tulevat laiskoiksi, fiineiksi ja köyhiksi.
MAIJA. Ju pet, samat sanat. Kyllä nuo talollisten lapset, jotka vähäkin
ovat jotain koulua käyneet, ovat aivan pilalla. Niistä tulee sellaisia
puolitaloosia.
KAISA. No ei niistä sitten enää ole muualle kuin piironkin päälle,
lasipurkin sisälle. Ei jo. Niistä ei ole kylään ei kotiin.
SANNA. Kun sitten vielä rupeaavat pelkäämään ja karttamaan niitä, jotka
julkeevat vielä tehrä työtä. Mitähän ne luuleevat olevansa. Luu-,
liha-, lantatynnöriä.
MAIJA. Älä tule ja paremmin sano. Vaikka lähtevät samasta pesästä, niin
ei enää tunneta entisiä tuttujansa. Millä luuleevat tämän maailman läpi
menevänsä! Päiväpaisteestako elävänsä!
KAISA. Niin toki, työtä tekemättä ei täs maailmas eletä. Kypsät
kärpäiset ei suuhun lennä.
SANNA. Senkin herran puoliskot ja neitin neljännekset! Sama asia on
piikain ja renkienkin kans.
MAIJA.
Niin juuri. Ennen piijat ja rengit tekivät puhretöitä, mutta mitä ne
nyt tekee — ajeleevat resiinalla ja sitä konettaan korjailevat ja
palkkansa siihen kuluttavat, jottei vaatteita yllä.
KAISA. Siihen aikaan kun minäkin olin vielä piikana, oli piijoilla
tavaraa, jotta kun piikaa taloohin sai kahrella hevosella olla
hakemassa — mutta nyt tuo isäntä piijan vaikka seljässään. Vaikka
silloin oli palkat niin monta kertaa pienemmät.
SANNA. Nyt ostetaan puorista kirvesvarret ja perunatikutkin. Ei ennen
miehinen mies juljennut sitä tehrä.
MAIJA. Ja kun tuo Mäkelän piika koetti täs talvella vähä kutoa
puumullihurstia, niin oli se nähtävää — kuin kalaverkkoa.
KAISA. Ja sitte ne lähtee kaupunkiin paremman päälle — jotta sen hatun
saisivat, joka niiltä vielä puuttuu.
SANNA. Ja sitten kun ne tulevat kaupungista maalle, niin ei enää tierä
ketä lypsetään, lehmääkö vai härkää.
MAIJA. Ja fiiniä kun ne ovat ja hoikkia piukkaliiveillä kiristettyjä.

KAISA. Ja puhuvat jotta »va saadu — saru hauraru kaurako». No mutta
juokaa, kuppinne jäähtyy. (Koettelee kuppien kylkiä.)
SANNA. Niin, eihän niitä enää puheesta tunne. Ja eihän ne osaa oikein
puhuakaan, huulensakin ne panevat kuin tuohen käiväriksi ja haisevat
hyvältä, jotta mitä lienevät syöneetkään.
MATTI (on nuukahtanut sänkyyn ja nyt kuorsaa erittäin kovaäänisesti).
KAISA. Mitä sinä hörnäät siellä! (Kääntyen akkoihin.) Se vetää nyt
pappilan metsästä hirsiä.
MAIJA. Ja sitten ne ovat, nuo piijat ja rengit, tarkoitan, tulleet niin
sosialistisiksi jotta: maa meirän on ja olla täytyy — eikä laiskain
lurjusten! Kyllähän niiren vanhempain sosialistien kanssa aina paremmin
tulee toimeen, mutta nuo justiin alkaneet, ne ovat niitä riivattuja.
SANNA. Ja sitten kun ne meinaa kaikki akat ja tavarat tasata ja kaikki
herrat ja hallitukset lopettaa.
MAIJA. Jos minä olisin valtiopäivillä ja vallan päällä, niin kyllä
höökerini heille näyttäisin.
KAISA. Mutta mikä se hallitus sitten oikein on?
MAIJA. No tuo Tynjälän äijä ja kissit tietää. (Katsoo lasista ulos.)
Ka, no, eikö tuolla tule niinkuin Salon Jussin Fiija. (Kaikki
tirkistävät). No sehän se on ja aivan omassa hahmossaan.
KAISA. Hei, vielä menen siihen. Eihän ne sosialistit usko elämää eikä
kuolemaa, ei tain taivaallista.
SANNA. Niin, raakuuressahan ne ihan kilpailevat. Täs tuonnoin tuli
meirän renki Kallen kanssa puhe siitä uskosta. Kalle kun sanoi, että
miksei uskovaiset käytännössä nourata opinkappaleitaan. Niin minä
sanoin, ettei oma hyvä kelpaa herralle.
KAISA. No mitäs Kalle sullen sanoi?
SANNA. Jotta, tuon lauseen taakse ne aina syntiä harjoittavan kruppinsa
vetävät. Jos omatunto jostakin soimata tahtoisi.
KAISA. No mitäs sinä sille sanoit?
SANNA. Minä sanoin, jotta ei lintukaan vaivu oksalta ilman herran
tierotta ja tahrotta, sanotaan sanassa.
KAISA. No mitäs Kalle sanoi?
SANNA. Kysyi vain, etteikö siellä mitään muuta sanota, ja lähti pihalle.
FIIJA (astuu tupaan).
KAISA. No, päivää, päivää! Nakkaa kinttusi ylös, niin ‘kyllä
takapuolesi istuimen löytää. Minä vähän kiehahutan tätä. (Asettaa
kahvipannun takalle.) Pian tämä tästä tulee, ja aikaa on enin
maailmassa.
MAIJA. No mitä Jussilta kuuluu? Terve on ja työssä saa olla kai?
FIIJA. Hyvää sieltä kuuluu, — sain eilen kirjeen ja viisikymmentä
taalaa rahaa.
SANNA. Vai viisikymmentä —
KAISA. No on se Jussi miesten parhaita, ja kun tuo Katiska-Jussi ei
pane Tiinalle ei sen pyöriväistä.
FIIJA. Joo, mutta miehiä onkin kahta lajia; on miehiä, on miekkosia. .
MAIJA. Niinhän niitä on, kahta lajia.
SANNA. Eihän se Katiska-Jussi kuulu yhtään yhres paikas pysyvänkään.
Ajelee Pessemeerin ja Nekauneen väliä, jotta aksilanpäät punaisina.
FIIJA. Niin justiin, samaa sitä kirjoitti Jussikin ja sanoi, jottei
sitä kauntaa aina ajella, vaan pysyä paikassaan. »Oo rait.»
KAISA (laittaa uutta kahvia pöytään, samalla kysyen). No mitä muuta
siltä Jussilta kuuluu — onko ketään junan tai kivien alle nyt mennyt?
FIIJA. No hei, tuos on kirje, lukekaa jotka näette.
MAIJA. Voi, lue sinä, Sanna, täs parhaammuuttas.
FIIJA (ojentaa kirjeen Sannalle).
SANNA. Voi herrajutinen, en minä näe näin pientä ilman lasia.
KAISA. Voi, odota, minä etsin Matin nenälasit. (Etsii ja löytää, tuo
Sannalle.)
SANNA (asettaa lasit nenälleen). No näillä näkee kuin omilla
silmillään. Kun minun silmiini on tullut vesikarvoja, jotta niitä saa
aina rassailla.
KAISA. Mistä hiiren tuutista niitä sinne...
SANNA (alkaa lukea Fiijan kirjettä).
Asthapula Ohio heinäk. 15 päivä.
Rakas vaimoni kuin olet sä.
Nyt koska aika ja tilaisuus myöten antavat. Niin otan taas pitkän
äijän takaa tuon ruostuneen kynän ja palan paperia ja istun tämän
pienen ymmyrkäisen pöytän ääreen ja kirjoitan muutaman rivin. Tulen
tämän pienen paperipalan avulla sinua tervehtimään täältä kaukaa
vetten takaa sinne vanhaan maahan. Jota samaa Herran armolahjaa soisin
sinunkin saavan nauttia, panen tässä samalla viisikymmentä taalaa. Se
Katiska Jani, joka minulla on ollut reitkaara paanarina, säkättiin
eilen ja tilalle tuli eräs neekeri. Sami on kuollut ja toiskan Ulla.
Kyllähän täällä taaloja tulee, mutta menäe kans, ostin eilen uuten
setselin kalorit ja ropessit. Enkä tietä muuta tällä kertaa kun jääkää
hyvästi herran haltuun. Että menestyisitte ja kauan eläisitte maan
päällä. Sano terveisiä kaikille tutuille ja tuntemattomille ja joitten
suu on naurus. Näitä piirtää sinun oma miehesi kuin olen mä.

MATTI (sängystä). No pitkältä se Jussi kirjoittaakin.
FIIJA. Niin pitkältä Jussi aina. Muutamat kun kirjoittavat vain jonkun
rivin.
KAISA. Niin, eihän sellaisista muutaman rivin kirjeistä pääse selville,
ollaanko siellä eläviä vai kuolleita. No mutta juokaa, juokaa, kuppinne
jähtyy. (Akat juovat.)
MAIJA. Niin, mitä kaikkea siinä kirjeessä nyt olikaan? Toiskan Ullako
kuollut — se siitäkin vielä puuttui, mitähän menikään.
SANNA. Sen hatun ja miehen valahis se sinne meni.
KAISA. Olis ottanut vaan sen Perämäen Heikin ja pysynyt täällä.
MAIJA. No sitähän se hieroja Liisa sille laitti, ja hyppäsi Toiskan ja
Perämäen välillä, jotta tie ravalla.
SANNA. No kenkänsä rikki se Liisa siinä juoksi, mutta tyhjän sai,
vaikka fällyjä yritti.
KAISA. Joka paikkaan se Jurvan Liisakin nenänsä pistää. Kylällä kun
hieromassa kulkee, niin siellä juorut latelee uusia ottaa, entisiä
jakaa. Senkin lautta! Sitten täs kulkee tuota äijää kiertään ja minulle
kyrää vetään kuin kärvikissi. Vai se Liisa siinäkin sulloi.
FIIJA. No sitä minäkin olen kuullut. Vai yritti se Heikki sitä Ullaa,
tuon Liisan välityksellä. Kyllä Heikki olisi pitänyt vetää uurestaan
lestan päälle, ennenkuin se olisi Ullaa saanut. Ulla oli niin isoo
sisältä — vaikka vaatimattomalta näyttikin.
MAIJA. No, siinä olisi ollut vakka ja kansi ja klapsahrus päälle. Mutta
se kun ei oikein hänelle kelvannut.
SANNA. No kyllähän se Heikki olikin vähän sellainen ja pieni ja musta
kuin tervahiir. (Ottaa lasit nenältään ja tarkastaa niitä.) No voi nyt
herra hallikkohon, näis ei ollut lasia ollenkaan!
KAISA. No voi nyt, joko niistä taas on... Kun niistä pakkaa aina
putoamaan lasit, kun ne sangat ovat niin ravistuneet. (Kaikki nauravat.)
LIISA (aivan akkain arvaamatta tulla pukahtaa tupaan ja vihaisena
Kaisalle kuin verikoira). Mitä sinä sellaista olet puhunut. Sinus niitä
kasvaa. Mokomakin äijä rähjäs — en huoliisi, vaikka kahren maailmas
olisimme. En jo. (Akat ällistyvät aivan suuttomiksi.)
MATTI (sängystä). Älkää minua haukkuko, viatonhan minä olen.
LIISA. On kuin myrskyn merkki.
MATTI. Älkää minua —
LIISA. On kuin varkain tehty lehtihaasio.
MATTI. — haukkuiko —
LIISA. Kuin tunkion sydänpuu.
MATTI. — viatonhan minä olen!
KAISA (saa puhelahjansa takaisin, toiset akat ovat tuppisuina). Ja
kaikki haaskat sitä kans täs silmille tuppaa» senkin lautta! (Uhkaa
Liisaa kauhanvarrella.) Tieräkkös, mistä on seitsemän hirttä poikki,
minä sanon!
LIISA. Mutta minä sanon — (Sanna, Maija ja Fiija istuvat
ällistyksissään.)
KAISA. Mutta niin se on kuin minä sen sanon.
LIISA. Niin sinä sen sanot, mutta niin se on kuin minä sen sanon.
KAISA (osoittaa kauhan varrella ovea). Tuosta on reikä pihalle, minä
sanon! (Kävelee kohti Liisaa, Liisa pujahtaa ulos, samalla ovenraosta
rumasti pylläyttäen. Mutta kun Kaisa nostaa jalkansa aikoen potkaista,
menee Liisa ovenraosta.) Senkin Lintu-Liisa!
MATTI. Noo, ei haukku haavaa tee — kun ei vain koira purra saa.
KAISA (Matille). Ja sinun viheliääsen tähren täs saa aina mielensä
pahottaa. Mitä minä nyt olen hänestä puhunut... mokomastakin
kylänluurasta.
MAIJA. Itse Liisa itsestään juttuja laittaa ja tahtois sitten, että
hänestä pitäisi puhua.
KAISA. Niin juuri. Ja minä en ole hänestä puhunut halaistua sanaa, en
jo! Maailma sitä on puhunut, ja minä vain sitä mitä sieltä kuulen.
SANNA. Ei, kyllä meirän pitää jo lähteä kotiapäin. (Nousee seisaalleen.)
