                        Verlag von Fr. Bassermann
                                  1908.

                        Die Sache wird bedenklich.

                   Sokrates, der alte Greis,
                   Sagte oft in tiefen Sorgen:
„Ach, wie viel ist doch verborgen,
Was man immer noch nicht weiß.“

Und so ist es. -- Doch indessen
                   Darf man eines nicht vergessen:
                   Eines weiß man doch hienieden,
                   Nämlich, wenn man unzufrieden. --

                   Dies ist auch Tobias Knopp,

                              [Illustration]

                   Und er ärgert sich darob.

                   Seine zwei Kanarienvögel

                              [Illustration]

Die sind immer froh und kregel,
                   Während ihn so Manches quält,
Weil es ihm bis dato fehlt.

                   Ja die Zeit entfliehet schnell;
Knopp, du bist noch Junggesell! --

                   Zwar für Stiefel, Bett, Kaffee
                   Sorgt die gute Dorothee;
Und auch, wenn er dann und wann
                   Etwas nicht alleine kann,

                              [Illustration]

                   Ist sie gleich darauf bedacht,
                   Daß sie es zurechte macht.
                   Doch ihm fehlt Zufriedenheit. --

                   Nur mit großer Traurigkeit
Bleibt er vor dem Spiegel stehn,

                              [Illustration]

                   Um sein Bildniß zu besehn.
                   Vornerum ist alles blank;
                   Aber hinten, gottseidank,
Denkt er sich mit frohem Hoffen,
                   Wird noch Manches angetroffen.

O, wie war der Schreck so groß!

                              [Illustration]

Hinten ist erst recht nichts los.
Und auch hier tritt ohne Frage
Nur der pure Kopf zu Tage. --

                   Auch bemerkt er außerdem,
Was ihm gar nicht recht bequem,

                              [Illustration]

Daß er um des Leibes Mitten
                   Längst die Wölbung überschritten,
                   Welche für den Speiseschlauch,
                   Bei natürlichem Gebrauch,
Wie zum Trinken, so zum Essen,
                   Festgesetzt und abgemessen. --
                   Doch es bietet die Natur
                   Hierfür eine sanfte Kur.

                   Draußen, wo die Blumen sprießen,
                   Karrelsbader Salz genießen
                   Und melodisch sich bewegen,
                   Ist ein rechter Himmelssegen;
Und es steigert noch die Lust,
Wenn man immer sagt: du mußt.

                              [Illustration]

                   Knopp, der sich dazu entschlossen,

                              [Illustration]

                   Wandelt treu und unverdrossen.

                              [Illustration]

                   Manchmal bleibt er sinnend stehn;

                              [Illustration]

                   Manchmal kann ihn keiner sehn.

                              [Illustration]

Aber bald so geht er wieder
                   Treubeflissen auf und nieder. --

                   Dieses treibt er vierzehn Tage;
                   Darnach steigt er auf die Waage;

                              [Illustration]

Und da wird es freudig kund:
                   Heißa, minus zwanzig Pfund!

                   Wieder schwinden vierzehn Tage,
Wieder sitzt er auf der Waage,
                   Autsch, nun ist ja offenbar

                              [Illustration]

                   Alles wieder, wie es war.

Ach, so denkt er, diese Welt
Hat doch viel, was nicht gefällt.

                              [Illustration]

                   Rosen, Tanten, Basen, Nelken
                   Sind genöthigt zu verwelken;

Ach, und endlich auch durch mich
                   Macht man einen dicken Strich.
Auch von mir wird man es lesen:
Knopp war da und ist gewesen.
                   Ach, und keine Thräne fließt
                   Aus dem Auge, was es liest;
                   Keiner wird, wenn ich begraben,
                   Unbequemlichkeiten haben;
                   Keine Seele wird genirt,
                   Weil man keinen Kummer spürt.
                   Dahingegen spricht man dann:
Was geht dieser Knopp uns an?

Dies mag aber Knopp nicht leiden.
                   Beim Gedanken, so zu scheiden
                   In ein unverziertes Grab,
                   Drückt er eine Thräne ab.
Sie liegt da, wo er gesessen,

                              [Illustration]

                   Seinem Schmerze angemessen.

                   Dieses ist ja fürchterlich.
                   Also, Knopp, vermähle dich.
Mach dich auf und sieh dich um,
                   Reise mal ’n Bissel rum.
Sieh mal dies und sieh mal das,
Und paß auf, du findest was.

                              [Illustration]

                   Einfach ist für seine Zwecke
                   Das benöthigte Gepäcke;

                              [Illustration]

                   Und die brave Dorothee
                   Ruft: Herr Knopp, nanu adjeh!

                            Eine alte Flamme.

                   Allererst und allsofort
                   Eilet Knopp an jenen Ort,
                   Wo sie wohnt die Wohlbekannte,
                   Welche sich Adele nannte;
                   Jene reizende Adele,
Die er einst mit ganzer Seele
                   Tiefgeliebt und hochgeehrt,
                   Die ihn aber nicht erhört,
So, daß er, seit dies geschah,

                              [Illustration]

                   Nur ihr süßes Bildniß sah.

                   Transpirirend und beklommen
Ist er vor die Thür gekommen,
Oh, sein Herze klopft so sehr,
Doch am Ende klopft auch er.

                   „Himmel, -- ruft sie, -- welches Glück!!“

                              [Illustration]

(Knopp sein Schweiß der tritt zurück.)

                              [Illustration]

                   „Komm, geliebter Herzensschatz,
                   Nimm auf der Berschäre Platz!

                              [Illustration]

Nur an dich bei Tag und Nacht,
                   Süßer Freund, hab ich gedacht.

                              [Illustration]

                   Unaussprechlich inniglich,
Freund und Engel, lieb ich dich!“

                   Knopp, aus Mangel an Gefühl,
                   Fühlt sich wieder äußerst schwül;
                   Doch in dieser Angstsekunde
                   Nahen sich drei fremde Hunde.

                              [Illustration]

                   „Hülfe, Hülfe!“ -- ruft Adele --
                   „Hilf, Geliebter meiner Seele!!!“

                              [Illustration]

                   Knopp hat keinen Sinn dafür.
Er entfernt sich durch die Thür. --

                   Schnell verläßt er diesen Ort
                   Und begibt sich weiter fort.

                          Ein schwarzer College.

                   Knopp verfügt sich weiter fort
                   Bis an einen andern Ort.
Da wohnt einer, den er kannte,
Der sich Förster Knarrtje nannte. --

                              [Illustration]

                   Unterwegs bemerkt er bald
                   Eine schwärzliche Gestalt,

                              [Illustration]

                   Und nun biegt dieselbe schräg
                   Ab auf einen Seitenweg.

Sieh, da kommt ja Knarrtje her!

                              [Illustration]

„Alter Knopp, das freut mich sehr!“

                              [Illustration]

                   Traulich wandeln diese zwei
                   Nach der nahen Försterei.

                              [Illustration]

                   „So, da sind wir, tritt hinein;
Meine Frau, die wird sich freu’n!“

                              [Illustration]

„He, zum Teufel, was ist das?
                   Alleh Waldmann, alleh faß!

                              [Illustration]

                   Oh, tu tu verruchtes Weib,
Jetzt kommt Knarrtje dir zu Leib!“

                              [Illustration]

                   Knopp’s Vermittlung will nicht glücken,
Wums! da liegt er auf dem Rücken.

                              [Illustration]

                   Schnell verläßt er diesen Ort
                   Und begibt sich weiter fort.

                             Rektor Debisch.

                   Knopp begibt sich weiter fort

                              [Illustration]

                   Bis an einen andern Ort.
Da wohnt Einer, den er kannte,
                   Der sich Rektor Debisch nannte.

                              [Illustration]

                   Er ertheilet seinem Sohn
                   Eben eine Lection,
                   Die er aber unterbricht,

                              [Illustration]

Als er Knopp zu sehen kriegt.
Zu dem Sohne spricht er dann:

                              [Illustration]

„Kuno, sag ich, sieh mich an!
                   Höre zu und merke auf!
                   Richte itzo deinen Lauf
                   Dahin, wo ich dir befehle,
                   Nämlich in die Kellerhöhle.
                   Dorten lieget auf dem Stroh
                   Eine Flasche voll Bordeaux.
                   Diese Flasche, sag ich dir,
                   Zieh herfür und bringe mir.“

                              [Illustration]

                   Kuno eilet froh und prompt,
Daß er in den Keller kommt,
                   Wo er still und wohlgemuth
                   Etwas von dem Traubenblut

                              [Illustration]

                   In sich selbst herüberleitet,
                   Was ihm viel Genuß bereitet.

                   Die dadurch entstandne Leere

                              [Illustration]

Füllt er an der Regenröhre. --

                   Rothwein ist für alte Knaben

                              [Illustration]

                   Eine von den besten Gaben.

                   Gern erhebet man das Glas.

                              [Illustration]

                   Aber Knopp der findet Was.

                              [Illustration]

                   „Ei -- spricht Debisch -- dieses ist,
                   So zu sagen Taubenmist.

                   Ei, wie käme dieses dann?

                              [Illustration]

Kuno, sag ich, sieh mich an!“

                              [Illustration]

                   Drauf nach diesem strengen Blick
Kommt er auf den Wein zurück.

                   Aber Knopp verschmäht das Glas,

                              [Illustration]

Denn schon wieder sieht er Was.

„Dies -- spricht Debisch -- scheint mir ein

                              [Illustration]

                   Neugeborner Spatz zu sein.

                   Ei, wie käme dieses dann?

                              [Illustration]

Kuno, sag ich, sieh mich an!!
                   Deiner Thaten schwarzes Bild
                   Ist vor meinem Blick enthüllt;
                   Und nur dieses sage ich:

                              [Illustration]

Pfui, mein Sohn, entferne dich!! --“

                   Das ist Debisch sein Prinzip:
                   Oberflächlich ist der Hieb.
                   Nur des Geistes Kraft allein
                   Schneidet in die Seele ein.

                   Knopp vermeidet diesen Ort

                              [Illustration]

                   Und begibt sich weiter fort.

                             Ländliches Fest.

                   Knopp begibt sich weiter fort
                   Bis an einen andern Ort.
Da wohnt Einer, den er kannte,
                   Der sich Meister Druff benannte.

                   Druff hat aber diese Regel:
                   Prügel machen frisch und kregel
                   Und erweisen sich probat
                   Ganz besonders vor der That.

                   Auch zum heutgen Schützenfeste
Scheint ihm dies für Franz das Beste.
Drum hört Knopp von weitem schon

                              [Illustration]

                   Den bekannten Klageton.

                              [Illustration]

                   Darnach wandelt man hinaus
                   Schön geschmückt zum Schützenhaus. --

Gleich verschafft sich hier der Franz

                              [Illustration]

                   Eines Schweines Kringelschwanz,
Denn er hat es längst beachtet,
                   Daß der Wirth ein Schwein geschlachtet;
                   Und an Knoppens Fracke hing

                              [Illustration]

Gleich darauf ein krummes Ding. --

                              [Illustration]

                   Horch, da tönet Horngebläse
                   Und man schreitet zur Française.

                              [Illustration]

Keiner hat so hübsch und leicht
                   Sich wie unser Knopp verbeugt;

                              [Illustration]

Keiner weiß sich so zu wiegen
                   Und den Tönen anzuschmiegen;

                              [Illustration]

                   Doch die höchste Eleganz
                   Zeiget er beim Solotanz.
                   Hoch erfreut ist Jedermann,
Daß Herr Knopp so tanzen kann.

                              [Illustration]

                   Leider ist es schon vorbei.

                              [Illustration]

Und er schreitet stolz und frei
                   Wiederum zu seinem Tische,

                              [Illustration]

                   Daß er etwas sich erfrische.

                              [Illustration]

Rums! -- Der Franz entfernt die Bank,
So daß Knopp nach hinten sank! --
                   Zwar er hat sich aufgerafft,
                   Aber doch nur mangelhaft.
Und er fühlt mit Angst und Beben:

                              [Illustration]

Knopp, hier hat es Luft gegeben! --

                              [Illustration]

                   Schnell verläßt er diesen Ort
                   Und begibt sich weiter fort.

                            Die stille Wiese.

                   Knopp begibt sich weiter fort
                   Bis an einen stillen Ort.

                              [Illustration]

                   Hier auf dieser Blumenwiese,
                   Denn geeignet scheinet diese,
                   Kann er sich gemüthlich setzen,
                   Um die Scharte auszuwetzen

                              [Illustration]

                   Und nach all den Angstgefühlen
                   Sich ein wenig abzukühlen.

                              [Illustration]

Hier ist alles Fried und Ruh.
                   Nur ein Häslein schauet zu.

                              [Illustration]

Sieh, da kommt der Bauer Jochen.
Knopp hat sich nur leicht verkrochen,

                              [Illustration]

                   Doch mit Jochen seiner Frau
Nimmt er es schon mehr genau.

                   Kurz war dieser Aufenthalt.
                   Und mit Eifer alsobald
                   Richtet Knopp sein Augenmerk

                              [Illustration]

                   Auf das angefangne Werk. --

Kaum hat er den Zweck erreicht,
                   Wird er heftig aufgescheucht,
                   Und es zeigt sich, achherrjeh,

                              [Illustration]

Jetzt sind Damen in der Näh.
Plums! Man kommt. Indeß von Knopp

                              [Illustration]

Sieht man nur den Kopf, gottlob! --

                   Wie erschrak die Gouvernante,
                   Als sie die Gefahr erkannte.

                              [Illustration]

Aengstlich ruft sie: Oh mon dieu!
C’est un homme, fermez les yeux!

                              [Illustration]

                   Knopp, auf möglichst schnelle Weise,
                   Schlüpfet in sein Beingehäuse.

                              [Illustration]

                   Dann verläßt er diesen Ort
                   Und begibt sich weiter fort.

                               Babbelmann.

                   Knopp begibt sich weiter fort

                              [Illustration]

                   Bis an einen andern Ort.

Da wohnt Einer, den er kannte,
                   Der sich Babbelmann benannte,
                   Der ihm immer so gefallen
                   Als der Lustigste von Allen.

Schau, da tritt er aus der Thür.

                              [Illustration]

„Na,“ ruft Knopp, „jetzt bleib ich hier!“
                   Worauf Babbelmann entgegnet:

                              [Illustration]

                   „Werther Freund, sei mir gesegnet!

                   Erstens in Betreff Logis,
                   Dieses gibt es nicht allhie,
                   Denn ein Pater hochgelehrt
                   Ist soeben eingekehrt.

                   Zweitens dann: für Essen, Trinken
                   Seh ich keine Hoffnung blinken.
                   Heute mal wird nur gebetet,
                   Morgen wird das Fleisch getödtet,
                   Uebermorgen beichtet man,
Und dann geht das Pilgern an.

                   Ferner Drittens, theurer Freund, --

                              [Illustration]

Pist! -- denn meine Frau erscheint!“

                   Knopp, dem dieses ungelegen,
                   Wünscht Vergnügen, Heil und Segen,
                   Und empfiehlt sich alsobald

                              [Illustration]

                   Aeußerst höflich, aber kalt. --

                   Schnelle flieht er diesen Ort

                              [Illustration]

                   Und begibt sich weiter fort.

                       Wohlgemeint wird abgelehnt.

                   Knopp verfügt sich weiter fort
                   Bis an einen andern Ort.
Da wohnt Einer, den er kannte,
                   Der sich Küster Plünne nannte.

                   Knopp, der tritt durch’s Gartengatter.

                              [Illustration]

                   Siehe, da ist Hemdgeflatter,
                   Woraus sich entnehmen läßt:
                   Plünnens haben Waschefest.

                   Dieses findet Knopp bekräftigt

                              [Illustration]

                   Dadurch, wie der Freund beschäftigt.

                              [Illustration]

                   Herzlich wird er aufgenommen.
                   Plünne rufet: „Ei, willkommen!

Gleich besorg ich Dir zu Essen,

                              [Illustration]

                   Halte mal das Kind indessen.“

                              [Illustration]

                   Knopp ist dieses etwas peinlich.
                   Plünne machet alles reinlich.

Knopp, der fühlt sich recht genirt.
                   Plünne hat derweil servirt.

                              [Illustration]

                   Jetzt eröffnet er das Bette
                   Der Familienlagerstätte.

                              [Illustration]

In dem Bette, warm und schön,
                   Sieht man eine Schale stehn.

                   Nämlich dieses weiß ein Jeder:
                   Wärmehaltig ist die Feder.

                   Hat man nun das Mittagessen
                   Nicht zu knappe zugemessen,
Und, gesetzt den Fall, es wären
                   Von den Bohnen oder Möhren,
                   Oder, meinetwegen, Rüben
                   Ziemlich viel zurückgeblieben,
                   Dann so ist das Allerbeste,
                   Daß man diese guten Reste
                   Aufbewahrt in einem Hafen,

                              [Illustration]

                   Wo die guten Eltern schlafen,
Weil man, wenn der Abend naht,
                   Dann sogleich was Warmes hat.
                   Diese praktische Methode
                   Ist auch Plünnens ihre Mode.

                              [Illustration]

                   „So“ -- ruft Plünne -- „Freund, nanu
Setz dich her und lange zu.“

                              [Illustration]

Knopp hat aber, wie man sieht,
                   Keinen rechten Appetit.

                              [Illustration]

                   Schnell verläßt er diesen Ort
                   Und begibt sich weiter fort.

                              Freund Mücke.

                   Knopp begibt sich weiter fort
                   Bis an einen andern Ort.
Da wohnt Einer, den er kannte,
                   Welcher Mücke sich benannte.

Wie es scheint, so lebt Herr Mücke
Mit Frau Mücke sehr im Glücke.

                              [Illustration]

                   Eben hier, bemerken wir,
Küßt er sie und spricht zu ihr:

                   „Also Schatz, ade derweil!
Ich und Knopp wir haben Eil,
                   Im historischen Verein
                   Wünscht er eingeführt zu sein.“

                              [Illustration]

Bald so öffnet sich vor ihnen
                   Bei der Kirche der Kathrinen

                              [Illustration]

                   Im Hotel zum blauen Aal
                   Ein gemüthliches Lokal.

                              [Illustration]

                   Mücke scheinet da nicht fremd,
                   Er bestellt, was wohlbekömmt.

                              [Illustration]

                   Junge Hähnchen, sanft gebraten,
                   Dazu kann man dringend rathen,

                              [Illustration]

                   Und man darf getrost inzwischen
                   Etwas Rheinwein drunter mischen.

                              [Illustration]

                   Nöthig ist auf alle Fälle,
                   Daß man dann Mussö bestelle.

                              [Illustration]

                   Nun erfreut man sich selbdritt,
                   Denn Kathinka trinket mit!

                              [Illustration]

„So, jetzt wären wir so weit,
                   Knopp, du machst wohl Richtigkeit.“

                              [Illustration]

                   Lustig ist man fortspaziert
                   Zum Hotel, wo Knopp logirt.

                              [Illustration]

                   Heftig bollert man am Thor,
                   Der Portier kommt nicht hervor.

                              [Illustration]

                   „Komm“, -- ruft Mücke -- „Knopp, komm hier,
Du logirst die Nacht bei mir!“

                              [Illustration]

                   Schwierig, aus verschiednen Gründen
                   Ist das Schlüsselloch zu finden.

                              [Illustration]

So so so! Jetzt nur gemach,
                   Tritt hinein, ich komme nach.

                              [Illustration]

                   Knopp schiebt los. Indessen Mücke
                   Bleibt mit Listigkeit zurücke.

                              [Illustration]

                   Schrupp! -- Wie Knopp hineingekommen,
Wird er an die Wand geklommen.
                   „Wart!“ -- ruft Mückens Ehgemahl --
                   „Warte, Lump, schon wieder mal!?“

                              [Illustration]

Weil sie ihn für Mücken hält,
                   Hat sie ihm so nachgestellt.

                              [Illustration]

Hei! Wie fühlt sich Knopp erfrischt,
Als der Besen saust und zischt.

                              [Illustration]

Bums! er fällt in einen Kübel,
                   Angefüllt mit dem, was übel.

                              [Illustration]

                   Oh, was macht der Besenstiel
                   Für ein schmerzliches Gefühl!

                              [Illustration]

                   Und als regellose Masse
Findet Knopp sich auf der Gasse.

                              [Illustration]

                   Schnell verläßt er diesen Ort
                   Und begibt sich weiter fort.

                           Ein frohes Ereigniß.

                   Knopp verfügt sich weiter fort
                   Bis an einen andern Ort.
Da wohnt Einer, den er kannte,
                   Der sich Sauerbrod benannte.

                              [Illustration]

                   Sauerbrod, der fröhlich lacht,
                   Hat sich einen Punsch gemacht.

                              [Illustration]

                   „Heißa!!“ -- rufet Sauerbrod --
                   „Heißa! meine Frau ist todt!!

                              [Illustration]

                   Hier in diesem Seitenzimmer
                   Ruhet sie bei Kerzenschimmer.

                              [Illustration]

Heute stört sie uns nicht mehr,
                   Also, Alter, setz dich her,

                              [Illustration]

Nimm das Glas und stoße an,
                   Werde niemals Ehemann,
Denn als solcher, kann man sagen,
                   Muß man viel Verdruß ertragen.

                   Kauf Romane und Broschüren,

                              [Illustration]

                   Zahle Flechten und Tournüren,
                   Seidenkleider, Sammtjackets,
                   Circus- und Concertbillets --
                   Ewig hast du Nöckerei.
                   Gottseidank, es ist vorbei!!“

                              [Illustration]

                   Es schwellen die Herzen,
                   Es blinkt der Stern.
                   Gehabte Schmerzen,
                   Die hab ich gern.

Knarr! -- da öffnet sich die Thür.

                              [Illustration]

                   Wehe! Wer tritt da herfür!?
                   Madam Sauerbrod, die schein-
                   Todt gewesen, tritt herein.

                   Starr vor Schreck wird Sauerbrod,

                              [Illustration]

Und nun ist er selber todt. --

                              [Illustration]

                   Knopp vermeidet diesen Ort
                   Und begibt sich eilig fort.

                                 Oh weh!

                   Knopp verfügt sich weiter fort
                   Bis an einen andern Ort.
Da wohnt Einer, den er kannte,
                   Welcher Piepo sich benannte. --

                   Aus dem Garten tönt Gelächter,
                   Piepo ist’s und seine Töchter.

                              [Illustration]

„Dies, mein lieber Knopp, ist Hilda,
                   Dort die Aeltre heißt Klotilda.
                   Hilda hat schon einen Freier,
                   Morgen ist Verlobungsfeier,
                   Doch Klotilda, ei ei ei,
Die ist noch bis dato frei.“ --

Oh, wie ist der Abend milde!
                   Knopp der wandelt mit Klotilde,

                              [Illustration]

Die ihm eine Rose pflückt. --
Und er fühlt es tief beglückt:
                   Knopp, in diesem Augenblick
Da erfüllt sich dein Geschick. --

                   Drauf hat Piepo ihn geleitet,
                   Wo sein Lager zubereitet.

                              [Illustration]

                   „Hier“ -- so spricht er -- „dieser Saal
                   Ist für morgen Festlokal.

                              [Illustration]

Hier zur Rechten ist die Klause,
                   Stillberühmt im ganzen Hause;

Und hier links da schlummerst du.

                              [Illustration]

                   Wünsche recht vergnügte Ruh!“

Knopp ist durch und durch Gedanke
                   An Klotilde, jene Schlanke,
Und er drückt in süßem Schmerz
                   Ihre Rose an sein Herz.

                              [Illustration]

                   „Oh Klotilde, du allein
Sollst und mußt die Meine sein.“ --
                   Darauf ist ihm so gewesen:
Knopp, du mußt noch etwas lesen. --
                   Gern erfüllt er sein Verlangen;
                   Still ist er hinausgegangen

                              [Illustration]

                   Und bei seiner Kerzen Strahl
                   Hingewandelt durch den Saal. --

                   Oftmals kann man müde sein,
Setzt sich hin und schlummert ein.

Erst des Morgens so um achte,
                   Als die Sonne freundlich lachte,
                   Dachte Knopp an sein Erwachen.
Er erwacht durch frohes Lachen. --
                   Dieses thut die Mädchenschaar,
                   Welche schon beschäftigt war,
                   Um an dieses Festes Morgen

                              [Illustration]

Für des Saales Schmuck zu sorgen.

„Ewig kannst du hier nicht sein.“ --
                   Denket Knopp voll Seelenpein.
                   Und so strömt er wohlverdeckt
                   Da hervor, wo er gesteckt.

                              [Illustration]

                   Groß ist seines Laufes Schnelle;
                   Aber ach, die Kammerschwelle
                   Ist ihm äußerst hinderlich.

                              [Illustration]

Hopsa! -- Er entblättert sich. --

                              [Illustration]

                   Heimlich flieht er diesen Ort
                   Und begibt sich weiter fort.

                         Abschreckendes Beispiel.

                   Knopp begibt sich eilig fort

                              [Illustration]

                   Bis zum höchsten Bergesort.

                              [Illustration]

                   Hier in öder Felsenritzen
                   Sieht er einen Klausner sitzen.

                   Dieser Klausner, alt und greis,
                   Tritt aus seinem Steingehäus.

                              [Illustration]

                   Und aus Knoppen seiner Tasche
                   Hebt er ernst die Wanderflasche.

                              [Illustration]

                   „Ich“ -- so spricht er -- „heiße Krökel
Und die Welt ist mir zum Ekel.
                   Alles ist mir einerlei.

                              [Illustration]

Mit Verlaub! Ich bin so frei.

Oh, ihr Bürsten, oh, ihr Kämme,

                              [Illustration]

                   Taschentücher, Badeschwämme,
                   Seife und Pomadebüchse,
                   Strümpfe, Stiefel, Stiefelwichse,
                   Hemd und Hose, alles gleich,
                   Krökel, der verachtet euch.

                   Mir ist alles einerlei.

                              [Illustration]

Mit Verlaub, ich bin so frei.

Oh, ihr Mädchen, oh, ihr Weiber,
                   Arme, Beine, Köpfe, Leiber,
                   Augen mit den Feuerblicken,
                   Finger, welche zärtlich zwicken,
Und was sonst für dummes Zeug --

                              [Illustration]

                   Krökel, der verachtet euch.

                   Mir ist alles einerlei.

                              [Illustration]

Mit Verlaub, ich bin so frei.

                   Nur die eine, himmlisch Reine,
                   Mit dem goldnen Heilgenscheine
                   Ehre, liebe, bet ich an;
                   Dich, die Keiner kriegen kann,
Dich du süße, ei ja ja,

                              [Illustration]

                   Heilge Emerenzia.

                   Sonst ist alles einerlei.

                              [Illustration]

Mit Verlaub, ich bin so frei.“

                              [Illustration]

                   Hiermit senkt der Eremit
Sich nach hinten. -- Knopp entflieht.

Knopp der denkt sich: dieser Krökel
                   Ist ja doch ein rechter Ekel;
                   Und die Liebe per Distanz,
                   Kurz gesagt, mißfällt mir ganz.

                              [Illustration]

                   Schnell verlassend diesen Ort,
                   Eilet er nach Hause fort.

                           Heimkehr und Schluß.

Knopp, der eilt nach Hause fort,

                              [Illustration]

Und, sieh da, schon ist er dort.

                              [Illustration]

                   Grade lüftet seine nette,
                   Gute Dorothee das Bette.

                              [Illustration]

                   „Mädchen,“ -- spricht er -- „sag mir ob“ --
Und sie lächelt: „„Ja, Herr Knopp!““

                              [Illustration]

Bald so wird es laut verkündet:
                   Knopp hat ehlich sich verbündet,

                              _Tobias Knopp.
                           Dorothea Lickefett._

                   Erst nur flüchtig und civil,
Dann mit Andacht und Gefühl. --

Na, nun hat er seine Ruh.

                              [Illustration]

Ratsch! -- Man zieht den Vorhang zu.

Updated editions will replace the previous one—the old editions will
be renamed.

Creating the works from print editions not protected by U.S. copyright
law means that no one owns a United States copyright in these works,
so the Foundation (and you!) can copy and distribute it in the United
States without permission and without paying copyright
royalties. Special rules, set forth in the General Terms of Use part
of this license, apply to copying and distributing Project
Gutenberg™ electronic works to protect the PROJECT GUTENBERG™
concept and trademark. Project Gutenberg is a registered trademark,
and may not be used if you charge for an eBook, except by following
the terms of the trademark license, including paying royalties for use
of the Project Gutenberg trademark. If you do not charge anything for
copies of this eBook, complying with the trademark license is very
easy. You may use this eBook for nearly any purpose such as creation
of derivative works, reports, performances and research. Project
Gutenberg eBooks may be modified and printed and given away—you may
do practically ANYTHING in the United States with eBooks not protected
by U.S. copyright law. Redistribution is subject to the trademark
license, especially commercial redistribution.

THE FULL PROJECT GUTENBERG™ LICENSE

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU DISTRIBUTE OR USE THIS WORK

To protect the Project Gutenberg™ mission of promoting the free
distribution of electronic works, by using or distributing this work
(or any other work associated in any way with the phrase “Project
Gutenberg”), you agree to comply with all the terms of the Full
Project Gutenberg License available with this file or online at
www.gutenberg.org/license.

Section 1. General Terms of Use and Redistributing Project Gutenberg
electronic works

1.A. By reading or using any part of this Project Gutenberg
electronic work, you indicate that you have read, understand, agree to
and accept all the terms of this license and intellectual property
(trademark/copyright) agreement. If you do not agree to abide by all
the terms of this agreement, you must cease using and return or
destroy all copies of Project Gutenberg electronic works in your
possession. If you paid a fee for obtaining a copy of or access to a
Project Gutenberg electronic work and you do not agree to be bound
by the terms of this agreement, you may obtain a refund from the person
or entity to whom you paid the fee as set forth in paragraph 1.E.8.

1.B. “Project Gutenberg” is a registered trademark. It may only be
used on or associated in any way with an electronic work by people who
agree to be bound by the terms of this agreement. There are a few
things that you can do with most Project Gutenberg electronic works
even without complying with the full terms of this agreement. See
paragraph 1.C below. There are a lot of things you can do with Project
Gutenberg electronic works if you follow the terms of this
agreement and help preserve free future access to Project Gutenberg
electronic works. See paragraph 1.E below.

1.C. The Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation (“the
Foundation” or PGLAF), owns a compilation copyright in the collection
of Project Gutenberg electronic works. Nearly all the individual
works in the collection are in the public domain in the United
States. If an individual work is unprotected by copyright law in the
United States and you are located in the United States, we do not
claim a right to prevent you from copying, distributing, performing,
displaying or creating derivative works based on the work as long as
all references to Project Gutenberg are removed. Of course, we hope
that you will support the Project Gutenberg mission of promoting
free access to electronic works by freely sharing Project Gutenberg
works in compliance with the terms of this agreement for keeping the
Project Gutenberg name associated with the work. You can easily
comply with the terms of this agreement by keeping this work in the
same format with its attached full Project Gutenberg License when
you share it without charge with others.

1.D. The copyright laws of the place where you are located also govern
what you can do with this work. Copyright laws in most countries are
in a constant state of change. If you are outside the United States,
check the laws of your country in addition to the terms of this
agreement before downloading, copying, displaying, performing,
distributing or creating derivative works based on this work or any
other Project Gutenberg work. The Foundation makes no
representations concerning the copyright status of any work in any
country other than the United States.

1.E. Unless you have removed all references to Project Gutenberg:

1.E.1. The following sentence, with active links to, or other
immediate access to, the full Project Gutenberg License must appear
prominently whenever any copy of a Project Gutenberg work (any work
on which the phrase “Project Gutenberg” appears, or with which the
phrase “Project Gutenberg” is associated) is accessed, displayed,
performed, viewed, copied or distributed:

This eBook is for the use of anyone anywhere in the United States and most
other parts of the world at no cost and with almost no restrictions
whatsoever. You may copy it, give it away or re-use it under the terms
of the Project Gutenberg™ License included with this eBook or online
    at www.gutenberg.org. If you
are not located in the United States, you will have to check the laws
of the country where you are located before using this eBook.

1.E.2. If an individual Project Gutenberg electronic work is
derived from texts not protected by U.S. copyright law (does not
contain a notice indicating that it is posted with permission of the
copyright holder), the work can be copied and distributed to anyone in
the United States without paying any fees or charges. If you are
redistributing or providing access to a work with the phrase “Project
Gutenberg” associated with or appearing on the work, you must comply
either with the requirements of paragraphs 1.E.1 through 1.E.7 or
obtain permission for the use of the work and the Project Gutenberg
trademark as set forth in paragraphs 1.E.8 or 1.E.9.

1.E.3. If an individual Project Gutenberg electronic work is posted
with the permission of the copyright holder, your use and distribution
must comply with both paragraphs 1.E.1 through 1.E.7 and any
additional terms imposed by the copyright holder. Additional terms
will be linked to the Project Gutenberg License for all works
posted with the permission of the copyright holder found at the
beginning of this work.

1.E.4. Do not unlink or detach or remove the full Project Gutenberg
License terms from this work, or any files containing a part of this
work or any other work associated with Project Gutenberg.

1.E.5. Do not copy, display, perform, distribute or redistribute this
electronic work, or any part of this electronic work, without
prominently displaying the sentence set forth in paragraph 1.E.1 with
active links or immediate access to the full terms of the Project
Gutenberg License.

1.E.6. You may convert to and distribute this work in any binary,
compressed, marked up, nonproprietary or proprietary form, including
any word processing or hypertext form. However, if you provide access
to or distribute copies of a Project Gutenberg work in a format
other than “Plain Vanilla ASCII” or other format used in the official
version posted on the official Project Gutenberg website
(www.gutenberg.org), you must, at no additional cost, fee or expense
to the user, provide a copy, a means of exporting a copy, or a means
of obtaining a copy upon request, of the work in its original “Plain
Vanilla ASCII” or other form. Any alternate format must include the
full Project Gutenberg License as specified in paragraph 1.E.1.

1.E.7. Do not charge a fee for access to, viewing, displaying,
performing, copying or distributing any Project Gutenberg works
unless you comply with paragraph 1.E.8 or 1.E.9.

1.E.8. You may charge a reasonable fee for copies of or providing
access to or distributing Project Gutenberg electronic works
provided that:

    • You pay a royalty fee of 20% of the gross profits you derive from
the use of Project Gutenberg works calculated using the method
you already use to calculate your applicable taxes. The fee is owed
to the owner of the Project Gutenberg trademark, but he has
agreed to donate royalties under this paragraph to the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation. Royalty payments must be paid
within 60 days following each date on which you prepare (or are
legally required to prepare) your periodic tax returns. Royalty
payments should be clearly marked as such and sent to the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation at the address specified in
Section 4, “Information about donations to the Project Gutenberg
        Literary Archive Foundation.”

    • You provide a full refund of any money paid by a user who notifies
you in writing (or by e-mail) within 30 days of receipt that s/he
does not agree to the terms of the full Project Gutenberg™
License. You must require such a user to return or destroy all
copies of the works possessed in a physical medium and discontinue
all use of and all access to other copies of Project Gutenberg™
        works.

    • You provide, in accordance with paragraph 1.F.3, a full refund of
any money paid for a work or a replacement copy, if a defect in the
electronic work is discovered and reported to you within 90 days of
        receipt of the work.

    • You comply with all other terms of this agreement for free
        distribution of Project Gutenberg™ works.

1.E.9. If you wish to charge a fee or distribute a Project

are set forth in this agreement, you must obtain permission in writing
from the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation, the manager of
the Project Gutenberg™ trademark. Contact the Foundation as set
forth in Section 3 below.

1.F.

1.F.1. Project Gutenberg volunteers and employees expend considerable
effort to identify, do copyright research on, transcribe and proofread
works not protected by U.S. copyright law in creating the Project
Gutenberg™ collection. Despite these efforts, Project Gutenberg™
electronic works, and the medium on which they may be stored, may
contain “Defects,” such as, but not limited to, incomplete, inaccurate
or corrupt data, transcription errors, a copyright or other
intellectual property infringement, a defective or damaged disk or
other medium, a computer virus, or computer codes that damage or
cannot be read by your equipment.

1.F.2. LIMITED WARRANTY, DISCLAIMER OF DAMAGES - Except for the “Right
of Replacement or Refund” described in paragraph 1.F.3, the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation, the owner of the Project
Gutenberg™ trademark, and any other party distributing a Project
Gutenberg™ electronic work under this agreement, disclaim all
liability to you for damages, costs and expenses, including legal
fees. YOU AGREE THAT YOU HAVE NO REMEDIES FOR NEGLIGENCE, STRICT
LIABILITY, BREACH OF WARRANTY OR BREACH OF CONTRACT EXCEPT THOSE
PROVIDED IN PARAGRAPH 1.F.3. YOU AGREE THAT THE FOUNDATION, THE
TRADEMARK OWNER, AND ANY DISTRIBUTOR UNDER THIS AGREEMENT WILL NOT BE
LIABLE TO YOU FOR ACTUAL, DIRECT, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE OR
INCIDENTAL DAMAGES EVEN IF YOU GIVE NOTICE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH
DAMAGE.

1.F.3. LIMITED RIGHT OF REPLACEMENT OR REFUND - If you discover a
defect in this electronic work within 90 days of receiving it, you can
receive a refund of the money (if any) you paid for it by sending a
written explanation to the person you received the work from. If you
received the work on a physical medium, you must return the medium
with your written explanation. The person or entity that provided you
with the defective work may elect to provide a replacement copy in
lieu of a refund. If you received the work electronically, the person
or entity providing it to you may choose to give you a second
opportunity to receive the work electronically in lieu of a refund. If
the second copy is also defective, you may demand a refund in writing
without further opportunities to fix the problem.

1.F.4. Except for the limited right of replacement or refund set forth
in paragraph 1.F.3, this work is provided to you ‘AS-IS’, WITH NO
OTHER WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT
LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR ANY PURPOSE.

1.F.5. Some states do not allow disclaimers of certain implied
warranties or the exclusion or limitation of certain types of
damages. If any disclaimer or limitation set forth in this agreement
violates the law of the state applicable to this agreement, the
agreement shall be interpreted to make the maximum disclaimer or
limitation permitted by the applicable state law. The invalidity or
unenforceability of any provision of this agreement shall not void the
remaining provisions.

1.F.6. INDEMNITY - You agree to indemnify and hold the Foundation, the
trademark owner, any agent or employee of the Foundation, anyone
providing copies of Project Gutenberg™ electronic works in
accordance with this agreement, and any volunteers associated with the
production, promotion and distribution of Project Gutenberg™
electronic works, harmless from all liability, costs and expenses,
including legal fees, that arise directly or indirectly from any of
the following which you do or cause to occur: (a) distribution of this
or any Project Gutenberg work, (b) alteration, modification, or
additions or deletions to any Project Gutenberg work, and (c) any
Defect you cause.

Section 2. Information about the Mission of Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg is synonymous with the free distribution of
electronic works in formats readable by the widest variety of
computers including obsolete, old, middle-aged and new computers. It
exists because of the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and donations
from people in all walks of life.

Volunteers and financial support to provide volunteers with the
assistance they need are critical to reaching Project Gutenberg’s
goals and ensuring that the Project Gutenberg collection will
remain freely available for generations to come. In 2001, the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation was created to provide a secure
and permanent future for Project Gutenberg and future
generations. To learn more about the Project Gutenberg Literary
Archive Foundation and how your efforts and donations can help, see
Sections 3 and 4 and the Foundation information page at www.gutenberg.org.

Section 3. Information about the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation

The Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation is a non-profit
501(c)(3) educational corporation organized under the laws of the
state of Mississippi and granted tax exempt status by the Internal
Revenue Service. The Foundation’s EIN or federal tax identification
number is 64-6221541. Contributions to the Project Gutenberg Literary
Archive Foundation are tax deductible to the full extent permitted by
U.S. federal laws and your state’s laws.

The Foundation’s business office is located at 41 Watchung Plaza #516,
Montclair NJ 07042, USA, +1 (862) 621-9288. Email contact links and up
to date contact information can be found at the Foundation’s website
and official page at www.gutenberg.org/contact

Section 4. Information about Donations to the Project Gutenberg
Literary Archive Foundation

Project Gutenberg™ depends upon and cannot survive without widespread
public support and donations to carry out its mission of
increasing the number of public domain and licensed works that can be
freely distributed in machine-readable form accessible by the widest
array of equipment including outdated equipment. Many small donations
($1 to $5,000) are particularly important to maintaining tax exempt
status with the IRS.

The Foundation is committed to complying with the laws regulating
charities and charitable donations in all 50 states of the United
States. Compliance requirements are not uniform and it takes a
considerable effort, much paperwork and many fees to meet and keep up
with these requirements. We do not solicit donations in locations
where we have not received written confirmation of compliance. To SEND
DONATIONS or determine the status of compliance for any particular state
visit www.gutenberg.org/donate.

While we cannot and do not solicit contributions from states where we
have not met the solicitation requirements, we know of no prohibition
against accepting unsolicited donations from donors in such states who
approach us with offers to donate.

International donations are gratefully accepted, but we cannot make
any statements concerning tax treatment of donations received from
outside the United States. U.S. laws alone swamp our small staff.

Please check the Project Gutenberg web pages for current donation
methods and addresses. Donations are accepted in a number of other
ways including checks, online payments and credit card donations. To
donate, please visit: www.gutenberg.org/donate.

Section 5. General Information About Project Gutenberg electronic works

Professor Michael S. Hart was the originator of the Project
Gutenberg concept of a library of electronic works that could be
freely shared with anyone. For forty years, he produced and
distributed Project Gutenberg eBooks with only a loose network of
volunteer support.

Project Gutenberg eBooks are often created from several printed
editions, all of which are confirmed as not protected by copyright in
the U.S. unless a copyright notice is included. Thus, we do not
necessarily keep eBooks in compliance with any particular paper
edition.

Most people start at our website which has the main PG search
facility: www.gutenberg.org.

This website includes information about Project Gutenberg,
including how to make donations to the Project Gutenberg Literary
Archive Foundation, how to help produce our new eBooks, and how to
subscribe to our email newsletter to hear about new eBooks.
