I. KOTKAN LAULU
1.
Valtava vuori
maan ikijuurista nousi;
sineä sousi
yllä sen kotka nuori.
Syysvärit väikkyi,
punersi puiden kulta,
lainehet tulta
laskevan päivän läikkyi.
Kaukaista kohti
käyväksi näytti lento.
Määrä mi vento
ylemmäs yhäti johti?
Kulkunsa kiinti
tähtien maille kotka,
tähtien, jotka
kutsuen yllä sen siinti.
Kerta se tähtein
kuunteli kuiskinnasta:
»Maas olet vasta
löytävä luoksemme lähtein.»
»Totta on sana,
minkä mä teiltä kuulin;
itsekin luulin
tuot' elon vainoamana.
Mutt' ikivoimat
sinne mun vasta vienee,
käyty kun lienee
määräni maan mataloimat.»
2.
»Milloin sa itse
mielit, jo tänne tulet,
kaikkein jos kulet
vaarojen vartomitse.
Pelkosi torju,
toiveitten maisten tuoma!
Taivahan suoma
ei tuki haivu ja horju.
Mut menos heitä,
päästä jos pelost' et saata:
lempien maata
kestä et taivahan teitä.»
»Pelost' en tiedä,
maata en mainita soisi.
Tuhoonko voisi
taivahan taival viedä?
Jos väsyn, hetki
kuoloni silloin on seessä,
mut se on eessä,
kuink' elon kulkikin retki.
Nyt tahi vinhan
päättyissä päiväini luvun,
sama se; suvun
suurien saavutinhan.
Perille pääsen
määrähän aina tähän:
yrittämähän
menin, ja maine jää sen.»
3.
Luoveja luoden
kohos se kotkien lailla,
kahleita vailla
katseensa kaarrella suoden.
Näki se allaan
vuorensa; jonka lehtoon
aurinko ehtoon
loi palon purppurallaan.
Eessä sen hajos
ulappa saaria saartain,
kunnes se kaartain
taivahan kantehen kajos.
Toisella puolla
metsä ol' lakeaks mennen;
monesti ennen
saalista samos se tuolla.
Sivulla saloin
tasanko aava alkoi;
järvet sen halkoi,
puuntivat täplät taloin.
Laa'an ol' laita
vuorien piirittämä;
kauimmat nämä
kotkan ol' aluemaita.
Nähdä ol' uudet
mannerten muodot noiden,
uunn' ulapoiden
rusotti rannattuudet.
4.
Kotkan jo rintaan
rajuna riemu heräs,
katsehen teräs
kajasti kaihoamistaan
»On toki täällä
oloni väljä ja vapaa!
Täällä en tapaa
pienuutta pintojen päällä.
Estett' en kohtaa,
auttajan ainoastaan:
ilman, mi vastaan
väreillen heljänä hohtaa.
Tääll' ylähällä
itseni olla saan ma:
jättäen maan ma
sen ja'an silmäämällä.
Meri jo toinen
tasangon takaa päilyy,
yllä sen häilyy
autere aurinkoinen.
Rajalta ruskoin
saarekas siintää aukee,
rannatta raukee,
kuin se min onneksi uskoin.
Toisaalla tumma
vuorien vartio nukkuu,
hämyhyn hukkuu
salojen sankkuus summa.»
5.
Himmeäks heittyi
meren ja maan jo piiri,
kaistaksi kiiri
päivä, ja yöhön peittyi.
Siintivät sumut
keskeltä öisen häivän,
kaukaiset päivän
hiljentyneet oli humut.
Tähysi tuosta
kotka jo taivahalle,
helottavalle
ruskojen viime vuosta.
Kuvasti vesiin
kulkue pilvipilkkuin,
väleistä vilkkuin
kuulsivat tähdet esiin.
Oudon ol' lainen
monenkin tuike tähden,
maasta mi nähden
tuttu ol' uskouvainen.
Kirkkahammilta
näytti ne nyt ja kuni
katoova uni
katsoa kaukaisilta.
Kotka ol' yksin
keskellä öistä aavaa,
autioks saavaa
pimeän piirityksin.
6.
Mietettä monta
mielehen matka jo johti,
kulkeva kohti
tienoota tuntematonta.
»Toiveita takaa
ajat sa turhan vuoksi;
tähtien luoksi
ei halu vie vain vakaa.
Olosi oman
heitit ja heimos suojan;
maan, tukes tuojan,
hylkäsit harhattoman.
Salosi laajat
sinulta sinne jäivät;
päättää nyt päivät
siellä sun saaliisi saajat:
Etsimäs elon
aikanas saisit sa aivan
välttäen vaivan:
hengeksi muuttuisit helon.
Taivahan tähdet
tylyinä tuolla loistaa,
katseensa toistaa:
turhaan sa luoksemme lähdet.
Pakene, palaa,
häpeäs yöhön haihda,
tienohos vaihda
toisehen, sinut mi salaa!»
7.
Silloinpa säikkyi
kotka jo itseänsä;
sydämessänsä
taas tuli lumottu läikkyi.
»Itse mä aloin
kulkea tietä tätä;
en sitä jätä
käskystä vierasten valoin.
Sisinpä selon
antavi aina parhaan,
kuljenko harhaan,
ikuisen luoma elon.
Ei elo pyhä
horjuen omaansa eitä;
käy elon teitä,
ken yleneepi yhä.
Tääll' elon täyden
etenen välkkyvuota;
työläs ois tuota
tavata tannerta käyden.
Pisara ainoo
sen ikivoiman veestä
estää jo eestä
kaiken, mi vaarana vainoo.
Tietäsi jatka!
Suuri ei määrä se oisi,
suoda min voisi
vaaraton, maineeton matka.»
II. PILVIEN LAULU
1.
Vaipunut valtaan
aatosten äkkiä keksi
työntyeheksi
eteensä pilven paltaan.
Hohtehen heljän
loi tähän kuu, min kaari
nous kuni saari
siinnosta aavan seljän.
Maakin jo hohti
hopeissa utuisten huntuin,
kotkasta tuntuin
kohonnehelta kohti.
Puhkoen taajat
pilvien vyöt se kiiti,
yllä jo liiti,
harveni lyönnit laajat.
Näki se eessä
tienohon tasangon laisen,
huikaisevaisen
kuutamon kimmelteessä.
Katseen se täytti,
leviten eteen ja taaksi,
toiseksi maaksi
keveän kirkkaaksi näytti.
Heleärinnat
kohosi kumpuin kuvat,
hahmoutuvat
niinkuni valkeet linnat.
Niiss' oli ylväät
muurien, seinien sarjat,
teräväharjat
tornit ja portit ja pylväät.
Pilvistä toiset
vuoriksi nous, ja ol' lomat
kattehettomat
merien mustien moiset.
Kotvasen vainen
katsetta kaikki ne kiehtoi:
lakeaks liehtoi
tuuli ne nousevainen.
Väistyi ja vajos
linnat ja muurit muhkeet;
yhtä jo uhkeet
toisaalla hohti ja hajos.
Tienoossa tässä
kaikk' elon täyttämäks tuntui,
vaikka se untui
levossa äänettömässä.
2.
Sokaisevalta
kirkkaus kuulti jo silmiin,
kun kohos ilmiin
kuu ehyt aaltojen alta.
Kotka jo näki
liikkuvan pilvien lomain:
siell' luvuttomain
keijujen kisasi väki.
Oli ne laiset
utuisten valkopilvein,
valohon vilvein
väikkehin vajoavaiset.
Toimessa, työssä
kaikk' oli uurastaen,
taivahan laen
pitäen pilvivyössä.
Taivahan aavat
maisemat nuo sopusuhtaan
luovat he, puhtaan
itsensä siinnoks ne saavat.
Miltä me kohtaa
vain sitä silmäämme, sieltä
ikuista kieltä
nuo näyt mielehen johtaa.
Maalle he antaa
valot, ne varjoon kääntää,
sateet he sääntää,
ohjia elon he kantaa.
Katseilta maisten.
itse he loitos lymyy,
hohteena hymyy
kisojen kimaltavaisten.
Rintaas he luovat
kaipuun kauemmaksi,
ahdistavaksi
tuntea maan sun suovat.
3.
Parvet jo keijuin
piiritti kotkan ja kulki
luo ja sen sulki
keskeensä kehänä leijuin.
»Ken olet? Vielä
nähty ei täällä sun laista.
Taivahan maista
ootko vai sinne tiellä?
Ootko sa tuoja
viestien, joit' ei suulla
keijujen kuulla
sanele taivaan Luoja?»
»Saalistamasta
vuorelta tulen, mi laitaa
maan-meren aitaa;
tähtihin tähtään vasta.
Suottapa soisin
airueks taivaan tulla:
samoelulla
usmihin eksyä voisin.»
»Tähtihin koitat?
Kovahan kyllyit maahan?
Toiveittes taahan
määräs jo täälläkin voitat.
Nää helopinnat
oisi sun omasi vailla
äärtä, ja la'illa
vuorien sull' olis linnat.
Itsesi anna
hahmoomme hohtoutua!
Taivohon sua
ei sulat kerkeemmin kanna.
Etäällä maiset
tääll' olis luotasi huolet,
etäällä nuolet
taivahan tuhoavaiset.
Voisi et ikään
kyltyä elohon, jota
vangiks ei ota
kahle ja kaava mikään.
Rusottavaisna
kun itä huomenin hohtais
katsees se kohtais
alati auvommaisna.
Vain tämän maineen
tähtien tavoitus takais:
osaasi jakais
ei moni lapsi aineen.»
4.
»Riemun on maata
kaikki nyt katsellani,
kirkasta ani;
silti en jäädä saata.
Maast' olen, määrää
koskettavaa käyn kohti;
tieltä ken tohti
väistyä, kulki väärää.
Täälläkin lienee
valita vaaroja mulla;
tyyntä ei tulla
taida, jos minne vienee.»
»Mietit jos milloin
pitkiksi taivahan teitä,
muistaos meitä,
impiä ilman, silloin!
Silloin jo maalis
etsimäs kyllin täytit,
voimas kun käytit
siihen, ja vaihtui vaalis.
Määräs on siellä,
minne sä taidat tulla.
Kun se on sulla,
kangastus katseeltas kiellä!»
»Ah, ma jo soisin
uupua tielläni, että
sen sitehettä
teiksi mä tulla voisin.»
Kohoavaksi
kiihtyi jo kotkan souto;
näky ol' outo
keijuinkin katselemaksi.
Kohos se, kerta
kadoten katsehilta
sineen, min silta
tähtinen mittoi merta.
III. TUULIEN LAULU
1.
Ylemmäs aina
kohosi kotka, ja jäivät
pilvien häivät
alle sen hohdokkaina.
Kauan se sieltä
siintoa silmäsi noiden,
jääminen joiden
turvaista tuotti mieltä.
Valkeena väikkyi
pilvien pintava tanner,
murheeton manner,
kuun kajo lomitse läikkyi.
Keijut ne kiiti
linnoja luoden ja pyörtäin,
vuoria vyörtäin,
pihoja pitkiä liiti.
Mutta miks häätyi
hattarat himmeäksi?
Hajan ne läksi,
tuuli kun puuskiksi päätyi.
Kauas ne heittyi
taivahan rantaan ja siellä
juovana vielä
siinti ja painui ja peittyi.
2.
»Oisinpa mennyt
tuon utumaan asujaksi,
vajottavaksi
tuntea saisin ma sen nyt.
Majani, vasta
vielä mi hohti hopein,
hetkin jo nopein
tuult' oli oikukasta.
Mutt' yhä säilyy
allani maa tuo vankka,
seisoo sen sankka
metsä, ja meri sen päilyy.
Entisnä yllä
taivaankin siintää talot;
virkkaa sen valot:
tää olo kestävi kyllä.
Turvansa takaa
maa sekä taivaan tarha;
hohtava harha
välill' on vähiten vakaa.
Maan jätin, taivaan
kuljen nyt kenttien puoleen;
horjua huoleen
välille-väistyjä sai vaan».
3.
Mut mikä vastaan
piilosta pimeän hiipi?
Miksikä siipi
syrjäysi soudannastaan?
Siihenkin tarttui
tuulisen pyörre, ja toinen,
myrskyvän moinen,
vastassa valliksi varttui.
Kotka kun koitti
kohota tuulen tieltä,
sijahan sieltä
syöksähti uus ja sen voitti.
Samos se suuntaa
minkä ne milloin sääsi;
eemmä jos pääsi,
sai se jo matkansa muuntaa.
Mutta se keksi
vuorot jo tuulispäiden.
»Varassa näiden
kohoan koitteheksi!»
Kohota soi sen
tuuli, mi tielle vaihtui,
ja kun se haihtui,
tuen se etsi toisen.
4.
Ylemmäs ehtein
sävelen kotka kuuli,
tuulta kun tuuli
kiidätti karkelehtein.
Esihin kiisti
Pohjasta puskuripäinen
ahava jäinen;
toisilta vuoron se riisti:
»Lait olon; elon
lausuvi vaara ja taisto,
sill' elon vaisto
varttuvi varassa pelon.
Taistajan kalpa
kaikk' uras auki raivaa;
hautasi kaivaa
vain ase työnuron halpa.
Viimeisnä jääpi
taiston ken tantereelle?
Väkevin, eelle
joukon mi jännittääpi.
Valmisna voimas
aina sa säilytä huolin,
oo joka puolin
ain' oma vartioimas!»
5.
Hetken ol' aikaa
tuulien rajalla rauha,
siks kunis lauha
Etelä alkoi kaikaa:
»Vain tuho tulla
saattavi tuhoamitse;
täys elä itse
elo, ja on se sulla.
Yhteist' on suoma
sen, ja se kaikille riittää.
Omakses liittää
sen side lemmen luoma.
Syömmet ken taikoo,
voimatkin valloittaapi,
tehdyksi saapi
avulla muiden, mit' aikoo.
Saa yli senki,
ottaen ainoastaan
voiman sen vastaan,
elon mi kaiken on henki.»
Vaimeni vaille
Etelän laulu, ja kulki
viemään se julki
viestinsä muille maille.
6.
Soi Itä aava:
»Voima ei valtaa anna,
ei sitä kanna,
kellä on hellänä haava.
Valta on hällä,
ken sen on saanut kerran;
hahmo on herran
myös hänet hyväksyvällä.
Kellä on valta,
hällä on kaikk' elon hyvä,
myös ylettyvä
sille, ken käskevi alta.
Miks elän, jollen
sen hyvän saadakseni?
vähimmän meni
voimia alaisna ollen.
Emme me tiedä,
ylimmät ohjat sai ken.
Sama se: kaiken
perille voi hän viedä.
Muotojen muuttuin
elämä eloa ohjaa.
Nää kun et pohjaa,
hallitse pintahan puuttuin!»
7.
Väistyä vuoro
Idänkin oli jo tieltä,
korskan kun kieltä
kaiutti Lännen kuoro:
»Kenen on valta,
ken osan pitävi parhaan?
Ken älys varhaan
käskeä korkealta.
Yks la'in lukee,
täyttäjiks jäävät toiset,
myös samanmoiset,
häntä he hartaina tukee.
Helppo on saada
kaikkensa toisen takaa,
oikein mi jakaa,
käskijän käill' ei kaada.
Taistaa on suotta,
turha on tunteita näyttää,
tahtoja täyttää.
Oikeutes ota tuotta!
Virtaapi sille
jokainen voima, mi taasen
virtauttaa sen
oikeille ottajille.»
8.
Toistaen tuuli
näin säveleitään soitti;
kohota koitti
kotka: se kyllin jo kuuli.
Lohdun ei mieltä
löynnyt se virsistä viimain;
tuskaisten tiimain
kätkeä koitti ne kieltä.
»Voima on täällä
valtias muotoja vaihtain,
ain' oman kaihtain
edun, mi päättävi päällä.
Taistojen tautta
jätin mä maan, ja vähän
mielin mä tähän
taistohon, min tulin kautta.
Mulla on kaipuu
olohon, aina mi pysyis,
joka ei kysyis,
voittaako ken vai vaipuu.
Rauhan ne majat
löydän mä tähtein luota;
tuikkivat tuota
katseet sen kangastajat.»
9.
Tähtien luona
ei la'it alavat auta,
joiden on rauta.
kalvalle niinkuni kuona.
Väkevä lienet:
ain' näet väkevämpäsi;
murskaa sen käsi,
voimas jos vastahan vienet.
Lempehen luotat?
Tunteiden tohdit varaan?
Lempijäs paraan,
itseskin, pettävän vuotat.
Mahtajan mieleen
luotat sä häilyvähän?
Väistää hän vähän
kortta, mi sattuvi tielleen.
Käskettävihin
luotat? Ne häntä kuulee,
min lujaks luulee,
myöntyvät vaikka mihin.
Heikkoja ovat
la'eiksi lumetten luojat;
suopi ne suojat
vain koetuttaen kovat.»
10.
»La'in on laki
mahtaja tähtien mailla,
yhdellä lailla
maassa jos hoivaa sen haki:
'Min ko'it ikään,
oikeas tehdä koita!'
Varmaa ei voita
sääntöä voima mikään.
Älkösi muille
tunteita tuhlaa, saaden
haudalles paaden!
Varoen ja'a valituille!
Mut varo vasta,
orjaksi ettet heity!
Työsi ei eity
sinua suojaamasta.
Ja jos sa palat
käskijäks toisten tulla,
orjaelulla
itsesi iestyä alat.
Mutta jos täytät
tuon la'in vuossata-satain,
tähtien ratain
riemua rientäen näytät.»
IV. REVONTULTEN LAULU
1.
Kohosi yössä
kotka, ja tähdet paloi,
myös meri valoi
valoa kuudanvyössä.
Pohjassa perin
kajastus syttyi kumma,
sen sini tumma
viiruili niinkuin verin.
Liitivät loimut
sen yli lailla aaveen,
haamuiksi haaveen
puki ne pilvien poimut.
Pois ne jo kuoli,
mutt' yhä uudet nousi;
ylemmä sousi,
ruskotti Pohjan puoli.
Niin kuni loihtuin
luomina kokoon ne karttui;
valtaviks varttui
välkkehet sähkösoihtuin.
Soihdut ne kauan
niin kuni liekein läiskyi,
rätis ja räiskyi,
vaikk' oli hiljaista hau'an.
Lievemmin liiti
kotka, kun katseli tätä
kimmeltävätä
kisaa, mi eessä sen kiiti.
2.
Kuiskajavainen
äärestä soi sana hälle:
»Näin ylähälle
miks tulit, lintu mainen?
Ain' ylös halaat,
siipeis et levätä siedä.
Et toki tiedä:
ehkä sä pettyen palaat.»
»Palata sois en
sieltä, mit' etsin kaipuin,
kutsuhun taipuin
tähtien, kotini koisen.
Kutsut ma sulot
kestin jo keijujen heljäin,
kestin mä neljäin
tuulien tuimat tulot.
Mutt' ovat mulle
outoja nuo tulet taivaan;
vaarahan, vaivaan
en toki tuolla ma tulle?»
»Suotta sa säikyt
luomia luonnotarten;
leikkiä varten
vain on ne valojen väikyt.
Ovat ne kieltä
haastelemaista heidän;
mailta et meidän
nouse, jos nää sen et mieltä.»
3.
Loma jo laukes
rannalla taivaan tuohon
liekkien vuohon,
avarammaks yhä aukes.
Niist' tuli vyöhyt
taivahankaaren lainen;
tummenevainen
ympäri sen oli yöhyt.
Kohosi viistoon
keskelle kaaren miekka;
kuin sotiniekka
viittoi se kutsuen kiistoon.
Vastasta heti
esihin toinen työntyi,
kutsuun mi myöntyi,
terällä toista veti.
Jäi tämä tälleen,
toinenpa, siihen mi kajos,
väistyi ja vajos,
mut pian kohosi jälleen.
Taistelu yltyi
yhäti iskuin huimin,
torjumin tuimin,
siks kunis viimein kyltyi.
Kotkalta kysyi
ääni: »Nyt kuulla voinen,
miks tehos toinen?»
»Nousussa nopeena pysyi.»
4.
Kolmisin koittain
taas terät taistohon ryhtyi;
kaks kohos, yhtyi,
kolmas ne vajotti voittain.
Nous nämä pian,
kolmatta iskien kohti,
terä min hohti
ylväytt' ylimmän sijan.
Suistui se alas,
taistoivat toiset kaksi:
ratkaisijaksi
pääs pian kolmas, mi palas.
Sekin jo vaipui
iskusta yhden, ja tämä
kahden, ja nämä
ens' terän eestä taipui.
Taas tulisesti
löi se ja toiset torjui,
pianpa horjui
itse, ja iskijät kesti.
Melskettä moista
karttui jo katselemiksi.
»Tiedätkö, miksi
nyt mikin voitti noista?»
»Voittihan aina
pisimmäks joukosta jäänyt.»
»Totta; mut nää nyt
kiivaammat kiistakkaina!»
5.
Yhdeksän terää
nousi ja iski ja yhteen
viskausi vyhteen,
taistaen täyttä erää.
Miekka, mi voitti,
kohta jo vaipuen väisti;
uus sitä säisti,
kaikk' alas karkeloitti.
Nousi ne pikaan,
taistelun kimmassa kiilsi,
vilskeenä viilsi,
kunneka katselikaan.
Erottanutkaan!
ei, mik' ol' yllä, alla;
sinkoamalla
samos ne satahan mutkaan.
Huikaisevaksi
kalpojen kisa jo kääntyi.
»Miks mikin sääntyi
vuoroonsa voittajaksi?»
»Suora ol' lyönti
sen, joka voittajaks pääsi,
sen hädin hääsi,
mutkat mi mukahan myönti.»
Tiesit sä totta.
Vielä on taisto yksi;
selitetyksi
saaos se vauriotta!»
6.
Soihduiksi alkoi
hajota taas tulijänne;
sinne ja tänne
liitäin ne hämyä halkoi.
Teriä täynn' nyt
taivahan kansi paistoi;
tuimaan ne taistoi,
mik' olis ylimmä käynyt.
»Jos ohi mennä
saatat sa säiläin noiden,
väistää ne voiden,
ylemmäs tyynnä lennä!
Mutta jos kajoo
sinuhun ykskään kalpa,
sai sulle salpa:
maahan jo jäädäsi vajoo!»
Katseli hetken
kotka ja lens' levottomaan
liekkien lomaan;
ehjänä ehtikin retken.
»Virka, min vuoksi
ohi sa pääsit, vaikka
pahin on paikka
se, johon joukot juoksi?»
»Tavoitin taa sen,
ylimmän yllä pääni.»
Vaikeni ääni,
kohosi kotka taasen.
7.
Kohos se kevein
mielin ja alkoi antaa
kiireemmin kantaa
siipensä liidoin levein.
Tunsi se vielä
etäälle ehtivänsä,
väistyttäjänsä
tulevan tuskin tiellä.
Kauan sen alla
kisata soihdut kerkes,
kunnes ne herkes,
yösydän-aukeamalla.
Yhden ja toisen
lyönti kun lieväksi laukes,
riennosta raukes
lyöty ja jäädä soi sen.
Sammui se siitä,
himmeiksi toiset heittyi,
poistui ja peittyi,
enää ei näkynyt niitä.
Kuukin jo vaipui,
pälyen silmin suurin,
taa sumumuurin,
hämy sen keralla haipui.
Taas avaruutta
syleili yöhyt jylhä,
tähtien ylhä
vyö väris uhkaa uutta.
V. UKKOSEN LAULU
1.
Korkeammalle
kotka tul' yön pimeässä,
äänettömässä;
tuntui se tuskaisalle.
»Jääneet on loitos
maan rajat multa, ja kunne
kuljen, en tunne;
kolkko nyt alkavi koitos.
Lumous outo
sitoa siipeni pyytää,
mieleni hyytää
niinkuni kuoleman nouto.
Lennän mä yksin
