METTISEN SUNNUNTAI
Sinikellot niityn keinuvat hiljalleen,
kesän sirkka on istunut viereen soittaakseen —
piu pau, nyt on mettisen sunnuntai.
Ahomansikka päivälle hehkuu kainouttaan,
sitä hattara ihmein jäänyt on katselemaan —
piu pau, nyt on mettisen sunnuntai.
Kuka polkua rientää askelin kiireisin,
kuka lehdossa viivähtää pian suudelmin —
piu pau, nyt on mettisen sunnuntai.
KEVÄTHATTARAT
Kuin kaipausten ajamat
on kevään hauraat hattarat,
ja omistaakseen taivaan sinen
ne juoksee kilpaa jokahinen.
Ne karkaa milloin minnekin,
ja missä kuulto ihanin:
ne sinne siivin, matkain päästä,
ne sydäntään ei muista, säästä.
Ja minkä saavat omakseen,
sen ihaellen itselleen
ne piiloittavat jokahinen
kuin armaimpien silmäin sinen.

PUNARUUSUIHIN PUHKEE
KESÄINEN KUU
Punaruusuihin puhkee kesäinen kuu,
se huojuu hiljaa ja uneksuu,
sen tuoksu mun päätäni huumaa;
se nostaa silmuja valohon päin,
sen elämän aavistuksina näin,
ja sen henki on tulista, kuumaa.
Punaruusuihin puhkee kesäinen kuu,
sill' on lämmöstä kypsä ja hehkuva suu,
ja se tulta mun sieluuni valaa;
minä kuljen — minäkin — aavistain
kesän kypsyyttä omassa rinnassain,
jota vielä se vaieten salaa.
SUN KUISKAUKSES...
Sun kuiskaukses sydämellein on
kuin lauha sade, kaste kukkamaan,
mi kevätsilmut aukoo verhoistaan, —
on hymyilys kuin valo auringon.
Ja kun sa povellesi tuudit mun,
on niinkuin lenneltyään lintunen
etäisiin matkoihinsa väsyen
sais pesän suojaan, — kodin kaivatun.
YLLÄ KUKKAUMPUIN
VERHOPÄISTEN
Yllä kukkaumpuin verhopäisten
hiljaisena nukkuu kevätyö;
tauonnut on vilkas pesäntyö
pienten muuttolintuin ensimmäisten.
Kohti korkeutta tähdet soutaa
etäisyyksiin hiljaa kadoten
lailla turhain mielikuvien,
jotka häipyvinä unhoon joutaa.
Kevätyö on yllä kukkaumpuin
unelmoiva, kuulas, hiljainen;
kenties jälkeen ensi huomisen
nukkuu se jo yllä kukkakumpuin.
NUORUUDELLE
Oi nuoruus, sa naurava nuoruus,
laps' iätön kulkevan ajan,
joka kerran kun kohdaten uutta
me elomme todellisuutta
sun luotasi siirsimme rajan,
yks sammui taivaamme tähti,
yks enkeli luotamme lähti
pois itkien lyhyyttä ajan.
Oi nuoruus, sa naurava nuoruus,
laps' iätön kulkevan ajan,
kun ensimmäisen me kerran

SOKEA HEVONEN
Pää riipuksissa seisoi se kuormansa edessä,
ylväät muodot, hennot rotuhevosen nilkat.
Miksi tämä työ ja alennus?
Äkkiä pursui kevätaurinko pilven alta,
huikaisevan valoisaksi tuli maailma,
ja silloin se hitaasti nosti päänsä valoa kohti,
sen sieraimet laajenivat ja se värisi:
nuori, elinvoimainen, hienotajuinen,
täynnä mieletöntä vapautumisen kaipuuta —
elinkautisten kahleitten sitomana,
kaihin peittämät silmät puolisokeina.
HALLAN PANEMA KUKKA
Sinä kasvoit tarhani loukkoon,
sinä kohosit povesta sen,
pyrit ensimmäisten joukkoon
kevätkaipuuta tuntien.
Et peljännyt peittoa lunten,
vain tunsit sa heräämisen
kuin aavistuksina unten,
elinvoimien elpyvien.
Oman itsesi nousit varaan,
kun mullasta nostit pään,
salaisimmista toiveista paraan
sinä sytytit elämään.
Sinä ikävöit, rukoilit innoin
käsivarsias ojentaen
ylös päivään ja hehkuvin rinnoin
ja hedelmääs siunaten.
Vaan kuoleman hanki, halla,
piti myöskin puoliaan,
se väijyili lehtien alla
ja henkäisi jäykäksi maan.
Et koskaan puhkea kukkaan,
et koskaan päivääsi nää,
olet unta vain nähnyt ja hukkaan
olet etsinyt elämää.
Kuin pyytäen sädettä lohdun
ja loppua pitkän yös
nyt seisot, mut heelmä kohdun
on kuollut ja toivosi myös.
MINÄ TARJOSIN SINULLE KUKKAA
Minä tarjosin sinulle kukkaa —
oli kukista punaisin;
minä tarjosin kiurua kevään —
oli kiuruista laulavin.
Kevätkukkani hehkui ja hehkui,
sitä nähnyt et, armahain;
kevätkiuruni lauloi ja lauloi,
sinä kuunnellut et sitä vain. —

LAPSUUSAIKA

Kaiun sentään muistoistani noista
etsin sydämeni sokkeloista,
niinkuin lippaastansa salaa saita
kalleuksiansa arvokkaita.
LAPSI KIRKKOMAALLA
Kirkkaaseen aamuun helisevät urut
sunnuntaivirttä.
Aurinkoinen kirkkomaa nukkuu, raskaat
väkevätuoksuiset ruusupensaat hautojen yllä.
Lapsi istuu hiekkaisella käytävällä ja leikkii.
Mitä kuuluu elämän huumaava kyllyys
tai kuoleman läheisyys
tai ahdistetun hengen tuska
koskemattomaan sieluun?
Lapsi, sinulle riittää lasinsirpaleet, kuoriaisten
touhu, hyönteisten surina ja silmäluomissasi
piilevä suloinen uni.
II. KESÄN HEILIMÖIDESSÄ
EN TYYDY MA RIPPEISIIN
En tyydy ma rippeisiin,
minä kerjää liioin en,
olen syntynyt tahtomaan
oman mittani täytehen.
Jos viiniä hienointa ei
minun maljani mulle suo,
minä koske siihen en,
sitä en minä lainkaan juo.
Sinä tähti, min puolehen
minä hehkuen kurkoitun,
sinut kiellän — ja kiroan,

KAIPAUS
Minun kaipaukseni on kuin kevytjalkainen kauris,

Minä tahdon sen, mikä taivaaksi tekee taivaan,
mikä ainoa mainen hurma on sieluni vaivaan.
Minä tahdon sen, mikä mahdoton on, mikä minut
voi mielettömäksi tehdä: ma tahdon sinut!
JOS AAVISTAISIT VÄHÄNKIN
Jos aavistaisit vähänkin
kuin usein tuntein tulisin
sua sydämessäin suutelin
ja kätkin kaiken sen,
et varmaankaan niin kylmä ois,
niin ylpeätä silmää lois
ja mulle tuota tuskaa tois,
mi särkee sydämen.
Vaan eipä sula talven jää,
ei kirkkahaksi muutu sää,

ja luotit niiden mahtiin,
sa keimailit ja olit avopäin.
Ja rannalle sa istahdit
luo aaltosien lorun
ja vuorten takaa kurkistavan kuun;
ja povehesi kiinnitit
sa unikosta korun
ja vaivuit pienen pieneen haaveiluun;
kai muistit kuinka rypälein
ja korjuupäivin selkein

MIKÄ ON TUO RAKKAUTESI?
Mikä on tuo rakkautesi,
kun pilviin niin nostat sen? —
Vain kuvastin kasvoillesi,

Se on höyhenpatjoista parhain,
on tyyssija itsekkäin
sulounten myöhään ja varhain —

On laannut kuumeinen jo touhu työn,
ma kaipaan lepoa ja läheisyyttä yön
ja tyynten ajatusten rauhaa,
ja nähdä mit' ei silmät päivin nää,
ja kuulla mikä kuulematta jää,
kun korvissani päivän melske pauhaa.

AH, NYT VASTA YMMÄRRÄN MA SEN
Ah, nyt vasta ymmärrän ma sen:
vuosiin heitti vuodet hämäränsä,
kotitakka lietsoi lämpöänsä,
vaan sen luona lämmitellyt en.
Niinkuin loistaa kaukaa tähti yön,
valo välkähtelee kaikenmoinen,
mua houkutteli elo toinen
luota askarten ja arkityön.
Uuvuksihin asti kiusaten,
öitä valvotellen, sisässäni
tämä alituinen ikäväni

KUN LÄSNÄ MA VUOTEESSA LEPÄSIN
Kun läsnä ma vuoteessa lepäsin,
läpi ruudun tähtiä katselin
ja kiertävää illan kuuta,
elonpainoa silloin jo aavistin,
minä suljin silmät ja pelkäsin
ja koetin miettiä muuta.
Sitä äidin suudelma poistanut ei,
se usein unenkin minulta vei,
en päässyt irti mä siitä.
Minä liitin sormeni ristihin,
Jumalalle, ehkä — ma arvelin —
yks aina ei rukous riitä,
Ja aikojen mukana rinnassain
se kasvoi ja suureni yhäti vain
kuin varjo mun sieluni ylle.
Elon hetki kun mull' oli riemuisin,
niin tyhjälle tuntui se kuitenkin
ja erheessä eletylle.
KULKIJAN LAULU
Monet olen tieni mä erhetyksin
kulkenut maailmalla;
monet olen illat istunut yksin
kiiluvain tähtien alla.
Monet olen kerrat mä ikävöiden
etsinyt toisen kättä;
monet olen hetket pitkien öiden
itkenyt herkeämättä.
Monet oli uskoa unelmat vailla,
vaikka ne tosiksi vannoin,
monet minä saippuakuplien lailla
syntyä, särkyä annoin.
Monet olen murheen ja riemun päivät
ottanut matkalla vastaan; —
joita ma eniten kaipasin, jäivät
houreiksi ainoastaan.
IV. AJATUKSET
AJATUKSET
Ajatukset, milloin te lennätte kuin villit joutsenet
vahvoin siivin ikävöityjä maita kohden,
milloin leijailette kuin uniset perhoset
kirjavalla niityllä kukasta kukkaan.
Te sankarina nousette, orjana raadatte,
laiskurina lepäätte tai kuumesairaana hourailette,
kuka ja mikä voi teille rajat määrätä?
Vuohilaumallensa pani isäntä kehnot paimenet.
DIOGENES
Diogenes, ma sua kadehdin,
ajalla elit, jolloin tynnyrin
voi filosofi ottaa majaksensa;
saa hulluinhuoneen elinkautisen
ken päässään ura filosofinen
nyt tynnyrihin pyrkii aatteinensa.
Diogenes, ma sua kadehdin,
sun älys mitta täytti tynnyrin,
ja antoi sulle elon tyynen sulon;
nyt viisaat sulloo viisaudellaan
jo äärtä myöten taivaan sekä maan
vain aikaansaaden polttavaisen kulon.
SISILISKO
Sisiliskonen raossa raunion
vain loikoo ja pitää lomaa;
kevätpäivässä kylkeä paistattaa,
kai mielestä sen on somaa.
Se kääntää kylkeä toistakin
päin päivän paahtavaa terää;
se silloin ja tällöin uinahtaa
ja silloin ja tällöin herää.
Ei piittaa se huomenen huolista,
tään päivän ei kuormaa kisko;
minä luulen: monikin mielellään
olis joskus vain sisilisko.
NIIN KULKEVAT KOHTI HE VUOSIAAN
Niin kulkevat kohti he vuosiaan,
kuin loppua niillä ei oliskaan;
ja pauloissa maisen turhuuden
pois antavat juosta päivien.
He nostavat ylpeän, korskean pään,
vaikk' astuu kuolema vierellään.
He huutavat suureksi oppiaan —
mit' on se, kun kerran se punnitaan!
Kun vihdoin valmis on viikatemies,
ei kysy se heiltä, mit' aivonsa ties,
ja oppi ja viisaus silloin on
vain pölyä valossa auringon.

Mut kaikki he kulkevat kumminkin,
kuin kaihi ois kasvanut silmihin.
He polkevat sitä ken heikompi lie,
ja yhtehen sentään matkansa vie,
kun hautainsa partaalla, naurussa suu,
he kuoleman sirppihin kompastuu.
INEHMO
Kumartui maammoaan kohti
lähelle lämpöisen pinnan;
siin' yletä, kasvaa tohti
liepeillä paisuvan rinnan.
Kumartui kultaansa kohti,
huulet huulihin kasti;
nyt kuohuvan maljan tohti
tyhjentää sakkahan asti.
Kumartui Kuolemaa kohti,
viluisna vuoteeseen mennen;
jo vihdoinkin levätä tohti
kuin konsaan ei sitä ennen.
OI IHMINEN, ET SINÄ TIEDÄ
Oi ihminen, et sinä tiedä,
mihin kuljet ja mihin käyt,
kuin ilmassa pyörivä lehti
vain jonnekin pyrkivän näyt.
Joka pieninkin tuulen henki
sua nostaa ja kiidättää,
ja sentään et pitkälle ehdi,
ei lähene määräsi pää.
Ja kun maasta vihdoin et nouse,
yks tehtävä sulla on vain:
pääs tarjoat poluksi muitten
sinunlaistesi kulkijain!
JERIKON-RUUSU
— Minnekä riennät, Jerikon-ruusu?
— Vettä, vettä kohti:
kun ei tohtinut sydämein muuta,
kaivata se tohti.
— Mikä lie kaipaus erämaan kulkijan?
— Kylliksensä juoda,
tuntea kasvua kuihtuneen rinnan,
keitaalla kukkia — luoda.
— Minnekä kukkasi, Jerikon-ruusu?
— Etsivät keitaan uuden,
kantavat heelmässä perintönänsä
ikuisen salaisuuden.
BRYSSELISTÄ TUODULLE
MADONNANKUVALLE
Ave Maria, brysseliläistä
kiveä, kipsiä, puutako liet?
Lapsen kuin muutkin jumalanäidit
hellästi vasten poveas viet.
Ave Maria, eksyitpä keskeen
kylmän ja pimeän pohjolan maan,
puutteessa tietäjäin, paimenten, tähden,
— brysseliläisten — sua kumartaa saan.
