ÁIT: Teach clúthmhar i nDroichead-Átha. UAIN: Oidhche ghealaighe
shamhraidh.
[Beirt cailíní ag fuagháil gréasa.]
MEÁIBLE.--A Estair, dún an fhuinneóg; tá faitchios orm anocht.
ESTAR.--Cad tá ar mo ghrádh gil anois? Tá an oidhche ciúin agus geal; tá
ba ’na suan ar mhachairíbh míne agus caoirigh go clúthmhar ag
cogaint a gcíorach ar sgáth na bhfál.
M.--An chaora ’na suaimhneas, acht cá bhfuil an t-uan, a Estair?
E.--Cá mbéadh sé, a laogh, acht le cois a mháthar.
M.--Fóiríor! is fada ó na máthair Meáible Bagenal. Mo léan! gan mé lem’
mháthair. Cogar i leith, a Estair; chonnac-sa sgáil ó chiainibh
thuas annsain le taobh an toir droighin. Ba chosmhail le taidhbhse
í, má tá a leithéidí ann.

M.--Chonnac an sgáil go háirithe; agus creideann na hÉireannaigh go

D’eitigh sí triall lem’ chois aréir ó Dhroichead-Átha gur bhagaras
fearg a dearbhráthar uirthi. Dubhart léi go raibh Ó Néill ar tí í
fhuadach; acht, mo thruagh mhór thú! níor chuir sin garrabhuic

’ná ann é.
MÁGHNUS.--Cionnus sain, a gharbhráthair? Is maith linn fialmhaireacht.
Ó N.--Acht níor mhaith leat nimh, is dócha? “Seachain an fíon, a Uí

Béidh deóra ar ainnir mar leanbh le breall,
Mar mealladh an ainnir le draoidheacht ’s le feall;
