ENSIMMÄINEN KOHTAUS.
(Palvelija avaa peräoven. Morsiuspari tulee sisään
päällysvaatteet yllä.)
_Johan_ (palvelijalle.) Kiitos -- nyt voitte rauhassa mennä nukkumaan.
_Palvelija_ (ovella.) Eikö rouva ehkä halua jotakin?
_Klara_. En, kiitos vaan.
_Palvelija_. Eikö herra ja rouva halua juoda lasia teetä?
_Johan_. Emme -- emme huoli teetä. Saatte vaan mennä.
_Palvelija_. Siellä vesi kyllä jo kiehuu.
_Johan_. Kiehukoon vaikka helvet--
_Klara_. Hm!
_Johan_. Kiitos vaan, älkää nyt meidän tähtemme mitään vaivaa nähkö.
_Palvelija_. Enkö siis millään tavalla voi olla herrasväelle avuksi?
_Johan_. Ette.
_Palvelija_. Toivotan sitte vaan herralle ja rouvalle hyvää yötä.
_Johan_. Hyvää yötä.
_Klara_. Hyvää yötä, ystäväni.
(Palvelija menee.)
TOINEN KOHTAUS.
Klara. Johan. Ovat ottaneet päällysvaatteet yltään.
Näyttämön etupuolella.
_Klara_. Luuletko että se oli oikeen?
_Johan_. Mikä sitte?
_Klara_. Kieltäytyä teetä juomasta. Mitähän hän mahtaa ajatella?
_Johan_. Mitäkö hän ajattelee! Että me mieluummin tahdomme viettää
rauhassa ensimäisen iltamme uudessa kodissamme, jota sinä et vielä edes
kunnolleen ole nähnytkään.
_Klara_ (Tarkastaa ympäri.) Niin, voi sinua kuitenkin, miten
juhlallista täällä onkin. Hänhän täällä kaikki on järjestänyt. Mahtaa
varmaan olla aika taitava palvelija.
_Johan_. Varmaan, sillä äitisihän hänet on valinnut ja sehän on juuri
hänen erikoisalansa.
_Klara_. Mitä sinä, oma ystäväni, oikeen tarkoitat? Oletko vihoissasi?
_Johan_. Äitillesikö -- eihän toki, ei semmoinen juolahtaisi
mieleenikään!
_Klara_. Sen saisitkin jättää tekemättä, taikka juoksen minä tieheni
hetipaikalla.
_Johan_ (tarttuu häneen.) Ei... En tunne ainoatakaan niin oivallista
vaimoa kuin sinun äitisi on.
_Klara_. Niin, eipä löydy yhtään toista ihmistä, joka minua niin olisi
hellinyt kuin hän. Niin että pidä vaan varasi, ett'en rupea katumaan
kauppojani, kun sinun kanssasi naimisiin menin! -- -- Äitihän se
tietysti palvelijan on teetäkin käskenyt meille keittämään. Hän ei
voisi nukkua rauhassa, jos hänen pitäisi ajatella että minun täytyisi
olla ilman iltateetäni ja ilman leivoksia.
_Johan_. Ja nyt täytyy sinun tyytyä vaan minuun.
(Tahtoo suudella häntä.)
_Klara_ (vetäytyy kauemmas.) Ei, ei! älä suutele minua. (Katsoo
häneen.) Minä en uskalla.
_Johan_ (tavoittaa häntä.) Etkö uskalla suudella minua? Sehän on vallan
uutta!
_Klara_ (katsoo olkansa takaa.) Niin ennen kyllä -- kun olimme
kihloissa. Mutta nyt...
_Johan_ (koettaa ottaa häntä kiinni.) Nythän sinun pitäisi suudella
minua monta kertaa useammin.
_Klara_ (torjuen.) Ei, mene tiehesi -- Minä en uskalla. En tunne sinua.
Olet niin kovin veitikan näköinen.
_Johan_ (kuten ennenkin.) Ja sinä olet niin kovin kaunis. -- Klara,
pelkäätkö minua?
_Klara_. En, en, seiso paikallasi. Aivan rauhassa. (Tarkastaa häntä.)
Minun täytyy tottua sinuun... (Johan tahtoo ottaa hänet kiini.) Jos
vaan sormellasikaan kosket minuun, niin huudan!... (katsoo häneen
silmiään räpäyttämättä.) Noin, hymyileppäs noin!... Kas, miten
kultainen oletkaan! (menee hänen luokseen.) Suutele minua nyt!
_Johan_ (vetää hänet lähelleen.) Oma, suloinen vaimoni!... Tule tänne
istumaan.
(Istuutuvat sohvaan.)
_Klara_ (vähäisen vaitiolon jälkeen.) Nyt ne toiset siellä tanssivat...
_Johan_. Ja äitisi itkee!
_Klara_ (varoittaen.) Johan!
_Johan_. Min, mutta tiedätkös mitä hän minulle sanoi suudellessaan
hyvästiä heittäessä vaunun luona.
_Klara_. Kai hän sanoi, että olisit hyvä minulle; ett'et koskaan minua
pilkkaisi, etkä mieltäni pahoittaisi.
_Johan_. Hän sanoi: "Oma onneton lapsiraukkani!" Tuo onneton
lapsiraukka olit sinä ja minä syyllinen. Anopeilla on todellakin
omituinen tapa osoittaa ystävyyttään tytärtensä miehille!
_Klara_. Mutta eipä mahtanekaan heistä hauskaa olla uskoa sievät,
herttaiset tyttärensä sellaisten inhoittavien olentojen käsiin, kuin
miehet yleensä ovat!
_Johan_. Olenko minä niin inhoittava?
_Klara_. Et, sinä olet sangen rakastettava.
(Hetkisen, vaitiolo.)
_Johan_. Miten suloista onkaan istua näin -- kun koko talossa valitsee
täydellinen hiljaisuus, eikä kenkään häiritse, oma, rakas Klarani -- me
kaksi vaan, eikä ketään muita...
KOLMAS KOHTAUS.
Palvelija (perältä. Rouva ja herra siirtyvät
kiiruusti kauemmas toisistaan.)
_Johan_. No, -- mut--
_Palvelija_. Pyydän anteeksi rouvalta ja herralta, mutta minulla oli
jotain sanottavaa rouvalle.
_Klara_. Niinkö, no mitä sitte, ystäväni?
_Palvelija_. Sitä vaan, että rouva sanoi, ett'en menisi nukkumaan,
ennenkuin olen tuonut herralle ja rouvalle kupin teetä.
_Johan_. Kuka rouva?
_Palvelija_. Rouvan äiti.
_Johan_. Mitä hiidessä te siitä välitätte mitä hän sanoi!
_Klara_ (ankarasti miehelleen.) Johan -- et ajattele mitä sanot
(palvelijalle ystävällisesti.) Vai käski äitini teidän toimittamaan
meille teetä. Teette vallan oikeen, kun pidätte mielessänne, mitä
äitini on teille sanonut. Kaunista kuulla, että olette noin tunnollinen
velvollisuuksienne täyttämisessä. Mutta emme kumpikaan, ei mieheni enkä
minä halua nyt juoda teetä ja kellokin on jo niin paljon että voitte
kiirehtiä vaan nukkumaan.
_Johan_. Niin, ja jos te sitte voisitte olla ystävällinen --
_Klara_ (kuiskaten miehelleen). Etkö jättäisi _minun_ tehtäväkseni
antaa palvelijalle määräyksiä. Saatte siis vaan mennä rauhassa; mutta
tahdon sanoa, että panen suuren arvon siihen että tarkoin noudatatte
niitä ohjeita joita äitini on teille antanut.
_Palvelija_. Kiitoksia vaan, hyvä rouva. Mutta minä olen hyvin
herkkäuninen, niin että jos jotakin tarvitsette, niin -- --
_Klara_. Emme tarvitse, menkää vaan rauhassa nukkumaan. Emme niin
mitään.
_Palvelija_. Pyydän vaan siis anteeksi ja toivotan rouvalle ja herralle
hyvää yötä.
_Klara_ (ystävällisesti,) Hyvää yötä.
_Johan_ (kärttyisesti.) Hyvää yötä.
_Palvelija_ (ovella.) Hyvää yötä.
NELJÄS KOHTAUS.
Klara. Johan.
_Johan_ (kulkee edes takaisin lattialla.) Sepä vasta mallikelpoinen
palvelija on.
_Klara_ (sohvalla.) Niin, minustakin tuntuu kuin olisi hän oikeen kelpo
palvelija.
_Johan_ (kääntyy Klaaraan.) Hänestä saamme varmaan paljon iloa.
_Klara_. Eihän palvelijoita huvin vuoksi pidetäkään vaan hyödyn.
_Johan_. Hän on ainakin alkanut oivallisella tavalla.
_Klara_ (ivallisesti.) Mitä sinä tarkoitat?
_Johan_. Tarkoitan, että hän käyttäytyy hiivatin sopimattomasti.
_Klara_ (kuten ennenkin.) Minua hän ei häiritse.
_Johan_. Tahdotko sillä sanoa, ett'et välitä olla minun kanssani
kahden?
_Klara_. En suinkaan. Mutta minulla ei ole mitään erityistä syytä
tahtoa olla sinun kanssasi kahden juuri nyt.
_Johan_. Minun mielestäni siinä on syytä kyllä että nyt on hääiltamme.
_Klara_, (viattomasti.) Onko silloin tapana olla kahden?
_Johan_ (kärsimättömästi, pilkallisesti.) Luulisipa melkein että olet
eilispäivän lapsi!
_Klara_ (hymyillen leikillisesti.) Ei, mutta tänään olen mennyt
naimisiin. Ja se tapahtuu ensikerran, joten minulla ei ole kokemusta
asiassa.
_Johan_ (seisattuu hänen eteensä.) Klara, miksi sinä kiusaat minua?
_Klara_ (hymyillen.) Enhän minä sinua kiusaa.
_Johan_. Kyllä. Sinä kiusaat minua... Ennen olit niin hyvä ja
herttainen, ja nyt... nyt olet kylmä ja välinpitämätön.
_Klara_. Olet niin kiihoittunut, Johan. Olet todellakin mahdoton.
Hyppäät paikoiltasi ja käyt sietämättömäksi vaan sen vuoksi että tuo
syytön piika parka sattui tulemaan sisään jotakin tiedustelemaan...
Unohdat itsesi niin kokonaan että et ainoastaan (vakavasti) puhele
hänelle äidistäni (arvokkaisuudella) lievemmin sanottuna sopimattomalla
tavalla vaan melkein olet häväistä minutkin hänen silmissään.
_Johan_. Häväistäkö sinut? Mitä tarkoitat?
_Klara_. Tarkoitan että suuttumuksesi siitä, että palvelija tänne tuli,
mahtoi antaa hänelle varsin sopimattoman käsityksen siitä, mitä täällä
tapahtuu.
_Johan_. Ah -- ei hän kai liene sellainen pöllö, ett'ei käsittäisi että
vasta naineet mieluimmin ovat kahdenkesken.
_Klara_ (ylhäisesti.) Niin, mutta minä en tahdo, että hän luulee minun
mieluimmin tahtovan olla sinun kanssasi kahden. Minusta se on sangen
sopimatonta.
_Johan_. Vai niin, nyt kun olet mennyt kanssani naimisiin --
_Klara_. Kuka sinulle on sanonut, että olen mennyt naimisiin kanssasi
saadakseni olla kahdenkesken? Kuka takaa ett'en ole mennyt naimisiin
juuri sadakseni olla niin monen seurassa kuin mahdollista!
_Johan_. Sitte sinun ei olisi pitänyt naimisiin mennäkään.
_Klara_. Miks'ei? Kun minua kerran halutti.
_Johan_. Sehän oli suosiollisesti menetelty minua kohtaan.
(Vaitioloa. Rouva sohvassa. Herra tuolilla hyvän matkan päässä.)
_Johan_. Klara.
_Klara_. No?
_Johan_ (siirtyy yhtä tuolia lähemmäksi.) Onko tämä tämmöinen sinusta
hauskaa?
_Klara_. Ei.
(Vaitioloa.)
_Johan_ (siirtyy taaskin lähemmälle tuolille.) Klara?
_Klara_. No?
_Johan_ (istuutuu sohvaan.) Ei tässä kannata ruveta puhumaan siitä
kenen syy on.
_Klara_ (vakuutettuna.) Kyllä. Syy on sinussa.
_Johan_ (hymyillen.) Sinusta ei tunnu ollenkaan siltä kuin olisi
sinussakin syytä.
_Klara_ (päättävästi mutta miellyttävästi.) Ei.
_Johan_. No, niin niin. Sanotaan sitte että syy on minun.
_Klara_. Ei, emme me sitä vaan sano me ajattelemme niin myöskin.
_Johan_ (hellästi ottaa häntä vyötäisistä.) No, me ajattelemme siis
että syy on kokonaan, aivan kokonaan (hymyilee) minun.
_Klara_ (varovaisesti.) Ei. Annas kun katson sinua... En saata kärsiä
että sinä hymyilet.
_Johan_. Nyt olen vakava kuin raamattu.
_Klara_. Ei, näen että hymyilet sittenkin salavihkaa. On sangen
epähienoa tehdä pilkkaa omasta vaimostaan.
_Johan_. Sitä en teekään. Ajattelen vaan pahantekijää -- tuota ainoaa
syyllistä, meidän sukkelaa kotitonttuamme.
_Klara_. Joka nyt uinuu viattoman unta.
_Johan_ (aivan lähellä Klaaraa, kuiskaten.) Niin, kello on jo paljon.
_Klara_ (hämillään.) Sinä varmaan olet uninen?
_Johan_. Näytänkö sinusta siltä?
_Klara_ (entiseen tapaansa.) Nostapas minua, sinä (ojentaa kätensä
Johania vastaan.) Tahdon nähdä asuntoamme.
_Johan_ (Nousee, nostaa vaimoaan.) Taidat itse olla väsynyt... sinussa
on koko nostaminen.
_Klara_ (ojentuen suoraksi.) Olen vaan hiukan uuvuksissa.
(Ottaa miestään käsivarresta.)
_Johan_. Avaammeko matkalaukkumme tänä iltana?
_Klara_. Emme, jätetään se huomiseen. Tänään katselemme vaan
asuntoamme, -- katselemme millaisessa ympäristössä tulemme elelemään
(kävelevät ympäri.) Tämä on arkihuoneemme siis?
_Johan_. Niin, ja samalla vastaanottohuone. Avoinna kaikille tuulille
ja talon ystäville.
_Klara_. Hyvin hieno, oikein sievä. Hiukan jäykkä. Minä pidän siitä
että huonekalut ovat hiukan vinossa -- pannaanpas tuolia hiukan sikin
sokin.
_Johan_. Ei -- arkihuoneessa pitää olla arvokkaan näköistä. Siellä on
oleva vierasten lintujen lepopuu.
_Klara_ (selkä yleisöön päin.) Mennään sitte tänne vasemmalle.
_Johan_ (vetää häntä mukaansa.) Ei ensin oikealle.
(Ottaa kynttilän soittokoneelta ja avaa oven oikealle.)
_Klara_ (puristautuu likemmä miehensä käsivartta.) Ruokasaliko? Huu,
huu. Onpa täällä kylmä.
_Johan_. Oletko koskaan kuullut, että ruokasali pidetään lämpimänä? --
Kuten näet, on kaikki sopivassa moitteettomassa järjestyksessä.
Istuimia 12 ja kun on perhe-ilta ja hyviä ystäviä vieraina, joten ei
tarvitse pelätä, vaikka vähän toistensa polviakin hankaisivat niin on
paikkoja viidelletoistakin.
_Klara_. Me emme koskaan muita vieraita tahdokaan kuin hyviä ystäviä.
_Johan_ (suutelee häntä.) Mieluimmin emme huoli ketään.
_Klara_. Mennään eteenpäin.
_Johan_ (avaa oven oikealla perällä.) Tässä on minun huoneeni --
kaikessa yksinkertaisuudessa. Ovi ruokasaliin ja oma uloskäytävä.
_Klara_ (päättävästi.) Siitä minä en pidä.
_Johan_. Huoneestako?
_Klara_. Ei, vaan omasta sisäänkäytävästä. Se ei sovi aviomiehelle.
_Johan_. Eikö näinkään mallikelpoiselle aviomiehelle.
_Klara_. Mitä vielä!... Ei, sen oven minä suljen. Sinä voit kyllä
kulkea yhteisestä käytävästä.
_Johan_. Minusta ei se ole yhtä mukavaa -- vierastenkaan vuoksi.
_Klara_. Ah -- selitämme heille, että ovi on sulettu kylmän tähden.
Aviomiehethän aina sairastavat jäsenkolotusta. Niin -- mennään sitte
tänne vasemmalle, ystäväni.
_Johan_ (vie hänet peräovelle vasemmalla.) Ensin pikku suukkonen!
(Suutelee.) Ja nyt aukasemme oven rouvan huoneesen.
_Klara_. Voi, miten ihastuttavan herttaista.
_Johan_. Kaikki sinistä, sellaista iloista, kuin toivon sinun
hallituksesikin tulevan olemaan. Sinistä, kuin pienet kätösesi
(silittää Klaaran kättä joka on hänen käsivarrellaan.) -- kun kynnet
ovat piilossa.
_Klara_. Mutta ne eivät tule koskaan todenteolla näkyviin, joll'et sinä
siihen pakoita... (Osoittaa viimeistä ovea hiukan hämillään.) Entä tuo
ovi tuolla, Johan?
_Johan_ (vie hänet sinne.) Kaikkein pyhimpään (avaa oven.) johon vaan
sinä ja minä saamme astua.
_Klara_ (kurkistaa uteliaana.) Siellä on niin pimeä -- sinä pidät
kynttilää pahasti kädessäsi.
_Johan_ (ottaa häntä vyötäisistä.) Tule, mennään sisälle ja sytytetään
siellä kynttilät... (Kuiskaa.) Oma, pikku vaimoni!
_Klara_ (katsoo häneen; kuiskaten.) Johan! Minä rakastan sinua.
(Johan tahtoo viedä hänet sisään huoneesen.)
VIIDES KOHTAUS.
(Silloin juuri avaa palvelija peräoven auki. Puolisot
hypähtävät erilleen; rouva hiukan parkaisten.)
_Palvelija_. Pyydän tuhannesti anteeksi.
_Johan_. Eihän mitä -- mitäpä syytä tässä olisi. (Klaralle.) Sanoinko
nyt niinkuin piti?
_Palvelija_ (katsoo vuoroin toiseen ja toiseen.) Tulin ehkä
sopimattomaan aikaan?
_Johan_. Ei suinkaan, ystäväni. (Klaralle.) Enkös ole sukkela?
(palvelijalle.) Mitä te sitte tahdotte?
_Palvelija_. Ei muuta kuin --
_Johan_ (Klaaralle.) Nyt sen kuulet. Ei muuta kuin... (palvelijalle.)
Mutta sittehän ei taida olla oikeastaan mitään asiaa.
_Palvelija_. Sitä vaan että minulle juohtui mieleen, että rouva...
_Klara_ (ylhäisesti.) Mikä rouva?
_Palvelija_. Rouvan äiti.
_Klara_ (harmistuneesti.) Ei teidän tarvitse välittää kenenkään muiden
käskystä kuin minun.
_Johan_ (nykäisee häntä hameesta, kuiskaa.) Klara muista että on puhe
äidistäsi! (Palvelijalle.) No niin, mitä aijotte sanoa anopistani?
_Palvelija_. Niin sitä, että vanha rouva sanoi, että nuoren rouvan
ei pitäisi mennä nukkumaan ennenkuin on juonut kupin teetä, sillä
siihen on rouva aina kodissaan tottunut. Ja juuri kun jo seisoin
riisuutumassa, muistin että olin sen aivan unohtanut ja että rouva oli
varoittanut ett'en suinkaan unohtaisi mitään hänen neuvojaan, ja
senvuoksi hyppäsin tänne kysymään eikö rouvasta kuitenkin olisi parasta
juoda kuppi teetä.
_Klara_ (entisellä tavallaan.) Mutta enkö sanonut teille, ett'en huoli
teetä?
_Palvelija_. Kyllä, mutta minä ajattelin --
_Klara_ (suuttuneena.) Teidän ei tarvitse ensinkään ajatella.
_Johan_ (hiljaa vaimolleen.) Sinä kiihoitut Klara! (palvelijalle,
ystävällisesti mutta päättävästi.) Nyt olette varmaan käsittäneet,
ett'emme tahdo teitä vaivata teen laittamisella. Ei rouva enkä minäkään
tarvitse mitään. Kiitämme teitä huolenpidostanne, ja pyydämme teitä
vaan tekemään meille sen palveluksen, että käytte nukkumaan.
_Palvelija_. Kyllä, jos herra ja rouva vaan ei mitään tahdo...
_Klara_ (lyhyesti.) Me tahdomme että te nyt menette.
_Palvelija_. Rouvasta siis ehkä on turhaa antaa veden enää kauempaa
kiehua...?
_Klara_ (Johanille.) Kuuletko se kiehuu yhä?
_Johan_ (palvelijalle.) Voitte aivan ilman omantunnon vaivoja ottaa sen
pois kiehumasta.
_Palvelija_. Hyvä, rouva siis ehkä antaa minun mennä nukkumaan.
_Klara_ (pilkallisesti.) Kyllä, sangen kernaasti.
_Johan_. Niin, ja kiitos nyt vaan tästä illasta, pikku ystävä! -- Mikä
teidän nimenne muuten on, näppärä tyttönen?
_Palvelija_. Maria minun nimeni oikeastaan on, mutta edellisessä
paikassani sanottiin minua Stiinaksi, sillä rouvan nimi oli siellä
myöskin Maria, niin että jos herra ja rouva suvaitsee...
_Johan_. Ei, kutsumme sinua vaan sillä nimellä, joksi olet ristitty...
Hyvää yötä Maria.
_Palvelija_ (ovella.) Hyvää yötä herra. Hyvää yötä, rouva.
_Klara_ (kärttyisenä.) Hyvää yötä.
(Palvelija menee.)
KUUDES KOHTAUS.
Klara. Johan.
_Johan_ (hymyillee.)
_Klara_ (istuutuu tuolille edessä.) Mille sinä hymyilet?
_Johan_ (hymyilee.) Hän on kerrassaan huvittava olento.
_Klara_. Minua hän aivan inhoittaa.
_Johan_. Eikös tämä sinustakin ole naurettavaa?
_Klara_. Minusta tämä, suoraan sanoen, on kerrassaan hermostuttavaa.
_Johan_. Sen voi sinusta kyllä huomata... Hyvänen aika, Klara,
(istuutuu hänen viereensä) koetetaanpas nyt, koska on hääiltamme,
katsoa asioita hiukan naurettavaltakin puolelta. Ennen olin minä
kärttyinen... pikku Klara ole sinä parempi kuin minä... (Klara yhä
vaikenee, katsoo toisaalle.) Tule, mennään katsomaan kaikkein
pyhimpäämme... Ethän äsken ennättänyt sitä nähdäkään.
_Klara_ (katsoen yhä toisaalle.) Ei, minä en tahto tulla.
_Johan_. Tahdotko sitte jäädä tähän istumaan koko ajaksi!
_Klara_ (kuten ennen.) En minä tiedä itsekään mitä tahdon. (Peittää
kasvonsa käsiinsä.) Olen niin onneton.
_Johan_ (hellästi.) Sinähän vallan itket, Klara. (Klara nyyhkyttää.)
Ei, et sinä saa itkeä, kuuletko.
_Klara_ (itku kurkussa.) Ah, varmaan olen kovin vastenmielinen olento!
