Cyceron dit qu’en ce monde n’a riens
Que bien & mal dont le bien est le meindre
S’il est ainsi pour contens je me tiens
Car j’ay eu et des maulz et des biens
A tel egal que je ne me doy plaindre
Boece aussi par raison veult constraindre
D’estre constant en plaisir ou en dueil
Qui puet venir soit ou corps ou a l’ueil
En ce monde a doloureuse leesse
Honteux honneur. et plaisir angoisseux
Joye dolant souffraiteuse richesse
Bien incertain et doubteuse promesse
Seurté tremblant. et chemin perilleux
Je trouvay tant de couroux et de jeux
Ou souvenir qui vint en ma memoire
Qu’on en feroit un petit purgatoire
En ce penser demouray longuement
Content d’amours/ hayneux de fortune
Dont troublé fus en mon entendement
Par tel parti que tout soubdainement
J’entr’oubliay toute chose commune
Et me sembla que j’oÿs par rancune
Cris et tenchons entre deux personnages
Divers de meurs en semblables langaiges
L’un ressembloit ung jone saudoyer
Frisque mignon gorgias par cointise
D’abit paré comme un grant chevalier
Hault en devise. et se nommoit cuidier
Qui par semblant nul ne doubte ne prise
Bel d’acointier/ perilleux a hantise
Doulz en attrait/ fier a continuer
Et commença par telz mos a parler

Je fay gaignier joustes/ tournois/ et pris
Villes/ chasteaux/ empires/ et royames
Par moy Cuidier les haulz fais sont empris
Qui riens n’emprent il est de petit pris
Qui n’a hault cuer il n’assemble que blames
Je fay avoir amour et cuer des dames
Vuaucrer la mer et saillir les chevaulx
Et conquester et les mons et les vaulx

Ainsi cuidier declairoit son povoir
Qui lui sembloit estre soubz sa puissance
Et en tous cas il cuidoit dire voir
Mais tost rompy son orguilleux voloir
Car le bruit vint le son et la muance
D’une roe tournant sans arestance
Par tel effort et par si grant hutin
Comme feroit la roe d’un molin
Celle roe tourneoit une dame
Couronne en chief et richement vestue
Les yeulx bendez. car veoir ne veult ame
Tout lui est un. cabaret/ ou royame
Noble et villains lui sont d’une entendue
L’estat des grans volentiers change et mue
Et s’esjoÿst a muer par cautele
Incessamment le tour de sa roele

Je suis fortune dist la dame tout hault
Sergent du ciel/ et verge de la terre
De toy cuidier en riens il ne me chault
Au long aler par mes mains passer fault
Ou est le bruit la se tourne ma guerre
Je dompte tout/ qui ne le croit il erre
Et se n’estoit que je vis et ne muers
On oubliroit honneur et bonnes meurs
L’un destruiroit tout par sa cruauté
Comme neron qui fist sa mere fendre
L’autre de vices feroit felicité
Sardanapaule en fist auctorité
Qui des femmes voult meurs et habis prendre
Alexandre ne voult il pas emprendre
De conquerir tout le monde et avoir
Mais a tous ceulx j’ay rompu le povoir
Puis que dieu veult estre de moy servi
Pour espantal de toutte ambition
Par qui sera mon povoir asservi
A nul ne touche s’il ne l’a desservi
Et qui de moy fait lamentation
S’il pense bien en sa condition
La trouvera calculant conscience
Que sans raison je ne fiers ne ne lance
Doncques cuidier qui en tes premiers saulz
Cuides voler comme fist dedalus
Sace et cognois que tu pues et que vaulz
Je t’avise que j’en vueil aux plus haulz
Va le moyen/ tu en dureras plus
Plus ne t’en dy/ mais ainsi je conclus
Par corps par sens/ par amis/ par sçavoir
Prent l’omme gloire qui le fait decevoir

Dont a bien pou n’enraga de despit
Et dist ainsi. J’ay volu ascouter
Voz haultains mos qui sont a rebouter
Pour tant mon cuer ne sera desconfit
Vous faittes tout/ perte/ honneur/ & prouffit
Dieu ne s’en mesle/ fortune a tout en main
Semblant perdu le franc arbitre humain
Fortune puet pou faire bien ou mal
Quant l’omme veult qui le quiert et deslie
Qui veult la mer vaulcrer sans gouvrenal
Qui veult courir sans bride son cheval
Et tout perir. fortune n’y est mye
Ne moy cuidier. mais est pure folie
Rage de cuer et desespoir terrible
Et querir eur par le bout impossible
Doncques je preuve par forme de logique
Que fortune n’est riens. ne ne peut estre
Fors un hault nom mis en parolle antique
Pour le samblable mettre mieulx en practique
Et discerner bien et mal de leur estre
Mais moy cuidier. je suis et si dois estre
Par moy se font les fais chevalereux
Et tendre main pour parvenir aux preux
Mais qui vouldra sans courroux ou arrogue
Chascun de nous prouvera sa value
Par ung argu fondé en dyalogue
En delaissant le devant du prologue
Fortune dist. j’acorde qu’on argue
Et jugera sentence qui ne mue
Sur le debat qui nous meut et traveille
Ce corps gisant qui ne dort ne ne veille

Ainsi je fus ordonné pour jugier
Le different de ces deux dessudis
Ce ne m’avint par dormir ne songier
Mais par raison qui me vint resveillier
Pour tous oÿr et leurs mos et leurs dis
La commença le debat que je dis
Qui est d’oÿr. Car riens ne se cela
Et dist cuidier qui le premier parla

Se je suis né grace dieu en ce monde
Parfait de corps et entier de tous membre
Ne vaulz je pas. je le croy et m’y fonde
Pour avoir part en l’avoir qui habonde
Sur la terre si grand en son estendre
Povres sont nés. cesar et alexandre
Qui tant ont sceu gaignier et conquerir
Si puis je moy se je le sçay querir
Fortune
Deux beaux jumeaux au monde se trouverent
Ypicleüs et hercules son frere
Mais deux serpens tel assault leur livrerent
Que ypicleüs hors du bers devorerent
Et hercules les mist a mort amere
Je ris. je tue. je destruis. je prospere
Sur deux enffans j’ay livré divers sort
Dont l’un vainquit et l’autre si fu mort

Se ypicleüs tu as fait devorer
Enffans ou bers en nouvelle naissance
Et hercules garantir et sauver
C’est contre ce que tu me veulz monstrer
Que sans cause tu ne donnes la chance
L’un eut bon eur. l’autre dure meschance
Nez en une heure et sans riens desservir
Doncques raison ne fault en toy querir

En la vie des peres on liroit
Que l’angle occist un enffant et tua
A un preudomme pour ce que trop l’amoit
Et si noya cellui qui le passoit
Une planche. pour ce qu’il savoit ja
Qu’a mal regner il se delibera
Ces deux occist et murdrist le bon ange
Dont l’euvre est bonne/ mais elle semble estrange

Or suis je nez de riche parenté
Pour moy soef eslever et nourir
Et me garder de toutte adversité
Qui bien commence il suit en qualité
Et qui bien semme il voit le blé flourir
Dieu ne m’a fait pour moy laissier perir

Soef nourist edyppus ses enffans
Monstrant devoir et nature de pere
Qui depuis firent mout de maulz en leur temps
Destruirent thebes leurs amis leurs parens
Puis s’entr’ocirent par cruauté amere
Tant de dueil firent et a pere et a mere
Que edippus meismes les deux yeux se creva
Pour non veoir les maulz qu’il engendra

Estre nourri j’enteray en doctrine
Et verray tout ce qui se met en lettre
Pour estre grant a qui je tens et cline
Riche puissant de hault renom et cline
Soit en estat seculier ou de prestre
Qui beaucoup scet il est tousjours le maistre
Et si ne puet science estre perie
Pour quelque perte tant que l’homme est en vie

Voy de senecq le grant clerc de renom
Que neron fist sans desserte morir
Archithophel qui fust frere absalon
Dont le conseil fut si grant et si bon
Contre fortune ne peut son sens furnir
Helenus troye si ne puet garantir
Car bien souvent il avient tel dangier
Qu’on ne se puet de sa science aidier

Et se je prens des armes le chemin
Harnas. escu. hache. lance. et espee
Ne vault je pas l’orguilleux de montclin
Pour avoir part en los et en butin
Autant ou plus que cesar ou pompee

Soit par mal faire. ou soit par estre bon

Qui quiert la guerre il doit fortune craindre

En fier estour fut ocis de son meindre

Suivir la guerre est un jeu de hazart

Par mer par terre et tant traveilleray
Qu’argent et or acquerray par tel guise
Que une province en porroit estre acquise
Ou que je tourne mon argent porteray
Prenant parti quelque part que voldray
Fuiant la guerre. ou lieu d’ympedimie
La ou la terre si ne me suivroit mie

Pour alleguier qui fist plus grant tresor
Et dont acteurs font mention et feste
Ce fut le roy nabugodonosor
Mais malgré tout avoir argent et or
La terre dit qu’il fut mué en beste
Et se tu prens en la mer gaing et queste
Tu trouveras pour un venu a port
Mille dangiers de peril et de mort

Se je prens femme qui soit et riche et belle
De noble lieu jone courtoise et sage
Est il plaisance seurté et joye tele
Tel passetemps en la vie mortelle
Que vivre ainsi au plaisir de mesnage
C’est un sollas que d’estre en mariage
C’est le plusseur et le meilleur parti
Qui may y pense je dy qu’il a menti

Gard le serpens qui soubz l’erbe se dort
Gard le filé qui l’homme prent et lye
Agamenon fut par sa femme mort
Menelaüs eut moult grant desconfort
Pour sa femme par les troyens ravie
Maints ont perdu par leurs femmes la vie
Par trouver cuers plus aspres que la bouche
Mais en mes dis aux bonnes je ne touche

Se je deviens un ouvrier mecanique
Fevre. machon. tondeur ou charpentier
D’autre mestier ainsi que l’on s’applicque
Feray je pas a fortune la nicque
Ne ne seray q’un pou en son dangier
Par tout a gaing un homme de mestier
Ainsy vivray sans le dangier d’envie
Ne doubter perdre tresor ou seignourie

Argus perist et lui et son navire
Qu’il avoit fait par soubtil sens et art
Bien je confesse que le mal est trop pire
Cheoir de hault que d’une basse tire
Et qui plus pert plus a de regart part

L’on doibt querir tousjours champion fort

La muerent tous les divers langaiges

De l’orguilleux qui trop se cuide et prise

Et auray chiens et oyseaulx a foison
Querant les champs par froit & par chaleur
La trompe au col comme un gentil veneur
