Näytelmä-paikka osoittaa erästä maaseutua Hämeessä. Perässä näkyy
lahti Näsijärveä ja pieni lehtevä saari; lahden rannalla
muutamia pieniä karia ja verkon ahtimia, vasemmalla puolella on
huono, maalaamaton puupenkki oven vieressä.
Ensimäinen kohtaus.
Vaaranen, sitten Anna.
_Vaaranen_ (tulee sisään, laukku ja pyssy olalla). Tässä löydän minä
viimenkin ihmisen asunnon, käytyäni tässä tienoossa melkeen koko
päivän. Niin, ihmisen asunto, jos tätä voin siksi kutsua, (katsoo
ympärillensä), mutta kaikki näyttää kuitenki, että tämä on asunto
kummiki köyhille lapsille, jos ei muille. (Istuu penkille, ottaa
lakkinsa päästään ja kuivaa kuumia kasvojansa.) Suomi! milloin
se päivä koittaa sinulle, että ihanat rantasi eivät enää ole
asunto-paikkoja köyhyydelle ja puutteelle? Milloin työ ja elämä
osoittavat onnea ja rikkautta, eivätkä enää vaillinaisuutta ja sitä
surullista autioa, jotka nyt piirittävät sinun laaksojasi. Ne ajat ovat
vielä loittona pimeässä tulevaisuudessa. Kasvakoon ensin tämän uuden
ajan poikia, uljaita ja voimallisia, auttamaan edistymistä meidänki
raskaassa isänmaassamme (kääntyy äkkiä ja kuuntelee; laulu kuuluu
kaukana, mutta lähestyy vähitellen.) Mitä kuulen! -- laulu! -- tässä on
laulullenki asunto. Laulu, se kuuluu siis, huolimatta köyhyydestä,
aina yhtä selvänä sinun rannoillasi.
_Anna_ (tulee kantaen kivi-askeaa, ja laulaa:)
Suomalainen kansanlaulu.
Voi äiti parka ja raukka,
Joka minua synnytit
:|: Maailman orjaksi tänne,
Kurjuutta kärsimään. :|:
Ei ole minulla maata
Eikä isäni perintöä;
:|: Ei ole minulla turvaa
Eik neuvon antajaa. :|:
(Hämmästyy nähdessään herran).
_Vaaranen_. Hyvää iltaa tyttöseni! -- Elä kainostele, tule kuitenki
vähä likemmä -- en mitään pahaa sinulle tarkoita; saat nähdä
että minä olen ihminen, niinkuin sinäkin.
_Anna_ (lähestyen). Oh, kyllähän minä sen näen, mutta me näemme niin
harvoin vieraita täällä, että -- -- --
_Vaaranen_. Sitä arvelin minäkin, mutta sano nyt, jos asut täällä
yksinäsi, ja mistäs nyt tulet?
_Anna_. Ainoasti vanha äitini isä ja minä, me asumme täällä, tässä
mökissä, sillä me kalastamme täällä. Minä olin lähimmäisessä
talossa, puoli neljännestä täältä ja toin maitoa tällä astealla.
Mutta pitää joutua, sillä äitini isä jo odottaa (tahtoo mennä).
_Vaaranen_ (estää häntä). Ei, kuule! sano ensin jos minä saan levätä
yön täällä. Minä olen kulkenut eksyksissä koko päivän ja olen
väsyksissä.
_Anna_. Ah, kah! Herra on varmaan niitä, jotka etsivät kukkia? Täällä
on ennenkin ollut sellaisia herroja.
_Vaaranen_. Niin melkeen; mutta kysy nyt äitisi isältä, jos saisin
olla täällä yötä.
(Anna menee mökkiin).
Toinen kohtaus.
Vaaranen yksinänsä.
_Vaaranen_ (katsoo ajatuksissa Annan jälestä). Niin, hänellä on
oikeen! Minä etsin totisesti kukkaa, yhtä kukkaa. -- Jos löytäisin
sen kirkkaana ja puhtaana, elämän myrskyn häneen koskematta, ettei
olisi kadottanut alkuperäistä ihanuuttansa.
(Näkee Lassin tulevan, jonka tervehtiessä Vaaranen nousee ylös
ja antaa Lassille kättä).
Kolmas kohtaus.
Vaaranen, Lassi ja Anna.
_Lassi_ (tullen mökistä). Hyvää iltaa! hyvä herra. Tyttöni sanoo
teidän tahtovanne viettää yön täällä. Viettäkää vaan, herra.
-- Tähän asti vanha Lassi ei ole sulkenut oveansa keltään
tarvitsevalta; eikä tämä ole ensimäinen kerta, kuin täällä yötä
vietetään; sen sanon, vaikka niin hienokas ja ylpeä näytte olevan.
-- Ei aina voi luottaa hienoinkaan herroin. Antakaa anteeksi, mutta
vanha Lassi on tottunut aina sanomaan mitä sydämmensä ajattelee.
_Vaaranen_. Ole huoletta; minä en ole hieno enkä ylpeä herra -- olen
vaan suomalainen ylioppilainen, kunniallisella nimellä ja lempeällä
sydämmellä, -- enkä mitään muuta.
_Anna_ (joka on tullut mökistä Lassin kanssa, itsekseen). Kuin hän
on ihana ja suloinen. Oikeen on, niinkuin häneen mielistyisin; mutta
(huokaa) Yrjöni, pysy sinä kirkkaana muistossani!
_Lassi_. Sen kyllä näen teidän rehellisistä silmistänne. Minä
mielistyn teihin, herra; jos ette pahaksi ottane, tahtoisi ukko
puhua vähän teidän kanssanne. (Kääntyen kuiskasee Annalle.) Mene
sinä ja valmista vuode siellä tuvassa -- ja kaikki niin hyvin kuin
voit.
_Anna_. Kyllä, isä! (menee tupaan).
Neljäs kohtaus.
Lassi, Vaaranen.
_Vaaranen_. Oletkos asunut täällä koko elinaikasi? eikö teillä ole
muuta sukulaista, kuin tuo tyttö, joka lienee tyttärenne tytär?
_Lassi_ (istuessaan penkille, kehottaa vierastaki istumaan.
Vaaranen istuikse). Ei ole minulla sukulaista muuta kuin Anna, ja
hän ompiki ainoa iloni maailmassa. Hänen tähden tahdonki vielä elää,
sillä kyllä ukko jo on elänyt kylläksensä. Mutta kuka pitäsi huolta
tytöstä, jos ukko peitettäisiin multaan?
_Vaaranen_. Minusta näyttää niinkuin te olisitte nähneet parempiaki
päiviä kuin nämät?
_Lassi_. No, niin, herra! mutta Jumala nähköön, niitä tuskin
muistan. Se oli aika seki, kun ukolla oli sievä ja rattosa talo
Kangasalassa; siellä elin hyvästi tyttäreni keralla. Vaimoni oli jo
aikoja sitte mennyt parempaan kotiinsa, eikä jättänyt minulle muuta
lasta kuin tytön. Tyttöni oli sittemmin pääkaupungissa jonkun ajan
tätinsä luona. Siellä pisti mieleensä käydä naimiseen; talonpoika ei
kelvannut, sen piti olla herramainen. No, sama se, jos tyttöni
vaan olisi ollut onnellinen, mutta ei se siksi muuttunut. Ne
muuttivat pienen tyttärensä kanssa minun tyköni, ja sitte alkoi se
mennä takaperin koko elämäni! --
_Vaaranen_. No, miten niin?
_Lassi_. Viina, se myrkky, mursi onnemme. Me saimme myydä kaikki mitä
oli, ja -- sitte karkasi hän pois, jättäen vaimonsa ja lapsensa
köyhyyteen. Tehtyänsä monta konnan työtä, lienee hän viimein päättänyt
rikollisen elämänsä Viaporissa. Sitte muutin tyttöni keralla tänne;
minä tahdoin etsiä meille niin yksinäistä asuntoa kuin vaan suinkin.
Sillä minulla oli paha kuulla kansan häväistyksiä, jotka tavoittivat
tytärtäni. Hän kuoliki kohta sen jälkeen, jättäen syliini pienen Annan,
joka silloin oli tyttö yhdeksän vuoden iässä. Siinä nyt on ukon
elämäkerta. Minä olen, Jumalalle kiitos, saanut olla terveenä täällä,
ja tyytyväinen olen aina ollut.
_Vaaranen_. Tyytyväisyys on ihmisen suurin maallinen onni.
_Lassi_. Välistä se tosin on ollut vähä tiukassa elatuksen kanssa,
mutta en koskaan puutteesta ole tietänyt, ja niin kauvan kuin aallot
läiskyvät rannalla ja ukko voipi käyttää airoansa, niin toivon
ettei se vieras astu mökkiini, vaikka mökkiki huono on. Mutta kuinka
se vihdoin käynee -- se on Herran kädessä.
_Vaaranen_. Kiitoksia kertomuksestanne, isä Lassi! Ole huoletta
tytöstäsi, kyllä hänestä huolta pidetään; eikä hän itsekkään mikään
lapsi ole enään.
_Lassi_ (noustessaan ylös). Hyvää yötä herra! minun pitää huomena,
auringon noustessa, istua järvellä. Jos kuitenki Anna nyt näkisi
minut täällä, niin hän varmaan hyvin ihastuisi. Minä luulen
hänen menneen keräämään vähän polttopuita huomeseksi. Hyvää
yötä!
(Hän menee).
Viides kohtaus.
Vaaranen, sitten Anna.
_Vaaranen_. Himeitä muistoja lapsuuteni ajasta! -- Kamgasala --
olisiko se mahdollista! Annalta pitää minun saada selvä asiasta.
Kah! tuolla hän jo tulee. (Anna tulee, kantaen sylillisen
polttopuita, jotta hän panee oven viereen). Tule tänne ja puhu vähä
lapsuutesi ajasta minulle; ja kuka sinua on opettanut laulamaan?
Voitkos vielä laulaa?
_Anna_. Mennä kesänä kävi täällä samallainen herra kuin te, kultapilkku
takissa, ja etsi kukkia, aivan kuin te, ja hän opetti minua
laulamaan. Ja muistan minä toisenki laulun, jonka olen osannut aina
lapsuuteni päivistä asti.
_Vaaranen_. No, kuka sen laulun sinulle opetti? Äitisi isä on jo
puhunut teidän elämästänne; mutta laulappas minulle se toinen laulu;
se ilahuttasi minun kuulla.
_Anna_ (naurahtaen). No, koska tahdotte; se on näin (laulaa):
Suomalaisia kansanlauluja, 3:s vihko, N:o 1.
Yksin istun ja lauleskelen,
Aikan' on niin ikävä.
:|: Vesi seisoo ja linnut laulaa,
Eikä tuulikaan vedätä. :|:
Oisko pursi ja punapurjeet,
Millä mennä merten taa,
:|: Tuolta tuottasin sulholleni,
Ko'on kultaa ja hopeaa. :|:
Sitten kutoa helskyttäisin
Papinpaita-kangasta,.
:|: Kihla-sormus se kiilteleisi,
Voi mua hullua neitoa. :|:
_Vaaranen_ (itsekseen). Niin, nyt minä muistan kaikki. (Kovasti.) Se
on kaunis laulu.
_Anna_. Se on minulle hyvin rakas. Kun olin pienenä lapsena ja me
vielä asuimme Kangasalassa, leikitsin minä usein pienen ojan rannalla
metsässä. Ainoa leikki-kumppalini oli poika likimäisestä torpasta,
jossa hän asui äitinsä kanssa, joka oli leski. Hän oli aina niin
hyvä minulle, se pieni Yrjö! Minä rakastin häntä sydämmestäni, niin
kuin lapsi rakastaa voipi, sillä hän oli erillainen muista pojista
kylässä. Kun se suuri onnettomuus tapahtui, niin ne muut lapset eivät
tahtoneet leikkiä minun kanssani ja kutsuivat minua "varkaan
tyttäreksi". Hän vaan minua ei hyljännyt. Mutta sitte kuoli hänen
äitinsä ja rovasti seurakunnassa otti Yrjön tykönsä ja lähetti hänet
kouluun, sillä hän luki niin sievästi. Hän tuli sitte vuoden perästä
takasin ja oli niin sievä ja siisti, mutta ei ollut unohtanut "pientä
Annaansa", niinkuin hän minua kutsui. Silloin opetti hän minulle sen
laulun, jonka nyt lauloin, ja sanoi, että aina muistaisin häntä, kun
sitä laulua laulan. Ja -- sitte matkusti hän pois ja me muutimme
tänne.
_Vaaranen_. Etkö sinä sittemmin häntä ole nähnyt?
_Anna_. En milloinkaan, hän kuuluu tulleen hienoksi ja ylpeäksi, ja
on saanut kultamerkin lakkiinsa, niinkuin teki. Ei hän enää taida
muistaa pientä Annaa!
_Vaaranen_ (liikutettuna ottaa Annaa kädestä). Kukatiesi hän on
muistanut sinua useemmin kuin luulet.
_Anna_ (nykii, pelästyen, kättänsä irti). Päästäkää, päästäkää minua,
hyvä herra!
_Vaaranen_ (vetäen Annaa likemmäksi). Ei Anna! en sinua laske.
Luuletkos lapsuutesi ystävän unohtaneen pienen Annansa, Annan,
jonka muisto on varjellut ystävätäsi monesta kiusauksesta ja
pahasta. Luuletkos hänen etsineen sinua, sitte jättääksensä sinut,
kun sinut jälleen löysi. Ei Annaseni! niin hän ei tee.
_Anna_. Olisitteko te siis Yrjöni -- ei, se ei ole mahdollista. Te
tahdotte vaan pettää minua.
_Vaaranen_. Ei; ihan todella minä olen sinun Yrjösi, -- sama
leikkikumppalisi.
_Anna_. Sydämmeni kyllä toivoo sitä ja tunnusteleeki jo teitä
lapsuutensa ystäväksi; mutta en toki uskalla luottaa semmoiseen
onneen.
_Vaaranen_. Anna! muistatkos, kun lapsina sen pienen kosken pohjasta
etsimme valkeita tarhakiviä, ja sinä lankesit veteen?
_Anna_. Kyllä, kyllä! Sinä olet Yrjö! -- Ah! te, -- te olette siis
muistaneet minua.
_Vaaranen_. Minä olen jo kauvan etsinyt sinua, vaikka turhaan. Se
vanha rovasti on kuollut; hän lahjoitti minulle kaiken omaisuutensa;
silloin syttyi minussa halu löytää sinut ja sinun kanssasi jakaa
kaikki, sekä elämäni. Mutta kaikki minun tiedustelemiseni ovat tähän
asti olleet turhat; nyt antoi onneni minun tavata sinut täällä, tässä
kurjassa mökissä.
_Anna_. Se on sitte oikeen totta; voi, kuinka olen iloinen!
_Vaaranen_. Ja, Anna, nyt sinä et enää tarvitse kärsiä vajautta,
etkä puutetta. Sinun pitää lähteä minun kanssani nyt, ihan nyt.
_Anna_. Mutta äitini isä?
_Vaaranen_. Hän tulee kanssamme. Ja sitte kun tulevaisuus löytää
minut vakavammalla pohjalla, kuin ylioppilaisena, niin tulet sinä
minun vaimokseni. (Likistää Annaa kovemmin).
_Anna_ (tempasee itsensä hänestä). Ei, ei! älä puhu niin, ei se voi
siksi muuttua. Te olette rikas ja korkea -- ja minä vaan tyhmä
kalatyttö, joka en ole oppinut mitään, -- elänyt vaan aaltojen
leikissä ja metsän huminan keralla. Te saisitte vaan häpeää minusta,
ettekä mitään muuta (itkee).
_Vaaranen_. Niin et saa puhua. Rikas en ole, jos en sinua saa. Yrjö
Vaaranen on vaan talonpojan poika, eikä mikään korkea ja hienokas,
-- olen lapsi kansasta, niinkuin sinäki. Ja jos minulla on tiedon
sivistystä, niin sinulla on sydämmen puhtaus ja tunnon helleys, ja
niin tarvitsemme me toisiamme; ja näillä avuilla voimme me tulla
onnellisiksi, toimittaa hyvää ja olla hyödyksi isänmaallemme.
_Anna_. Te tahdotte siis opettaa minulle, mitä minä en ymmärrä?
_Vaaranen_. No niin, Anna! sen tahdon minä ja sinä tasoitat ja
pehmität sen, mikä on kulmikasta ja kovaa minussa. Ja siten voimme
olla hyödyksi ja iloksi toisillemme sekä muillenki.
Kuudes kohtaus.
Lassi, Vaaranen ja Anna.
_Lassi_ (tullen esille). Missä Anna viipyy? Muistot entisestä ajasta
ajavat unen silmistäni ja levon sydämmestäni. (Istuikse penkille
syvissä ajatuksissa, huomaitsematta muita). Kertomukseni sille
rehelliselle nuorukaiselle repii auki ne vielä parantumattomat
haavat, -- -- -- voi sinua, epäilevä sydän! mitä suret. Annan
tulevaisuus on Jumalassa.
_Anna_ (hoksaen Lassin, karkaa Lassin kaulaan). Ah, isä! tämä herra
on Yrjöni!
_Lassi_ (Yrjölle leikitellen). Johan minä äsköin teidät tunsin,
vaikken luullut teidän minua enää vanhaksi tuttavaksenne
tunnustavan.
_Vaaranen_ (lähestyen). Elä isä, elä ajattele niin pahaa entisestä
mökinpojasta. Ei koskaan herras-puku eikä nimi ole saaneet minua
unhottamaan onnellista lapsuuteni aikaa, eikä rakastettuja ystäviäni.
Nyt muutamme kaikki minun luokseni, ja Anna tulee minun vaimokseni;
niin olemme tässä Annan kanssa päättäneet?
_Lassi_. Päättäneet! voisi kyllä olla hyvä päätös, vaan päättäsin siinä
asiassa minäki. -- Herramaiselle annoin tyttäreni ja menetin hänen
onnensa; tyttäreni tytärtä en antanekkaan semmoiselle Varénille tahi
mikä Varanteri lienekki.
_Vaaranen_. Vaaranen on nimeni; sitä en ole muuttanut. Suomalaisena
pysyy nimi, niinkuin mieski.
_Lassi_. Sinä olisit siis vapaa tyhmästä herruudesta, joka
hyvänki miehen herjaksi saattaa?
_Vaaranen_. Tyhmä, -- niin, tyhmä herruus on tosin monen onnettomuuteen
saattanut; mutta totinen sivistys tekee ihmisen ihmiseksi, herran
sekä talonpojan yhdenvertaisiksi -- meidät kaikki rehellisiksi
suomalaisiksi.
_Lassi_ (arvelee hiukan). Rehellinen oli isäsi, rehellisyys välkkyy
sinunki silmistä (ilolla ja liikutettuna). Lapseni! teidän yhdistystä
olen aavistanut ja toivonut, vaan en kuitenkaan uskonut tuon asian
niin nopeasti päättyvän; (panee kätensä heidän päänsä päälle) no,
Jumala suokoon siihen siunauksensa! sillä minä uskon sinua, Yrjö,
sanassasi, ettäs vielä olet se sama rehellinen, viaton poika kuin
ennen.
_Vaaranen_ (laulaa samalla nuotilla, kuin Suomalaisien kansanlaulujen
1:n vihon N:o 6: "Tuoll' on mun kultani, ain' yhä tuolla" j.n.e.):
Pois oli kultani, pois kotipuolta;
Minulla ei muuta, kuin ikävää ja huolta.
Voi minun kultani, voi minun lintuni,
Kuin mun jätit näin. :|:
On opinteilläkin valoisa käydä,
Valosampi kultani seutuet nähdä;
Jo löysin kultani, jo löysin kultani!
Armas silmäsein! :|:
_Anna_ (vastaa samalla nuotilla:)
Jo oli toimeni epäilytiellä;
Hiukan mä kuitenki oottelin vielä.
Jo tuli kultani, jo tuli armaani,
Oma sulhoni! :|:
_Molemmat_:
Nyt näen kumminki sen ilopäivän:
Annani sivullani kulkevan ja käyvän.
Totuus ei raukene, lempi ei kylmene
Suomen neitojen,
Suomen nuorison!
_Anna_ (iloissaan). Ei koskaan minulla ole ollut niin iloista päivää
kuin tämä, ja minä toivotan jokaiselle nuorelle neitoiselle samaa onnea
ja iloa! -- -- ja jos se vähä viipyisiki, niin odottakaa vaan
kärsivällisesti, kyllä se kerran tulee.
(Esirippu putoaa).
