_Suvonen_, pulska, käytös ylhäisen pidättyvä ja kuitenkin rehentelevä,
maiskuttelee usein mahtavasti suutaan.
ENSIMMÄINEN KOHTAUS.
Hauska tupa. Isä istuu penkillä, poltellen savuketta. Ulla levittää
liinan pöydälle, katselee sitä arvostelevasti, vetää sen pois ja panee
toisen sijalle.
_Isä_. Oikein. Oikein on. Paras pöytäliina pöytään. Ei niitä joka päivä
sulhasia vuoteta.
_Ulla_. Ei nämä meidän pöytäliinat ole juuri minkään väärttejä.
_Isä_ (tyytyväisesti myhähdellen). Ei ole tarvis sitä surra. Kohta pian
sinä voit ostaa vaikka samettiset pöytäliinat. (Nopeasti.) Älä pane
vanhoja kuppeja, pane ruusukupit.
_Ulla_. Totta minä nyt sen ymmärrän, että panen ruusukupit. (Kattaa
pöytää.)
_Isä_. Taitaa tällä Suvosella olla kahvikuppeja piironki pullollaan.
_Ulla_. On sillä, ja hopeaa suuret kaapilliset. Sillä taitaa olla
hopeinen kahvikuukarikin, joka keittää kahvin pöydässä.
_Isä_. Sellainen priin kanssa käyvä, juu, niin on. Kyllä siinä talossa
on rikasta joka nurkassa.
_Ulla_. Ei siellä ole semmoista kuin tämä kannakselainen elämä.
_Isä_ (nauraa halveksivasti). Ei totisesti. Nämä täällä, ne on
köyhiä kuin lutikat. Ei näillä ole ruokaa suuhun, eivätkä ne viitsi
tavotellakaan. Ne töllistelevät ja kävelevät, ja koti on kuin pahna.
_Ulla_. Niin, kyllä minä olin suu auki silloin, kun me ensin tulimme
tänne. En minä ollut ennen nähnyt tällaista kuhnustamista.
_Isä_. Kuhnuksiahan nämä ovat. Sentähden se olikin pitkän matkan päästä
tuotava sinulle sulhanen. (Katsoo kelloaan.) Jaa, pian se jo tuleekin.
(Nousee ja menee ikkunan luo.) Ei näy auto vielä. — Juu, sieltä kaukaa
minun kotipaikoiltani se oli etsittävä, ja hyvä se tulikin. Ei siitä
mitä, että sillä on jo vähän ikää.
_Ulla_. Ikää? Mitä ikää? Neljäkymmentä vuotta! Onko se ikää?
_Isä_. Eihän se, totta se on, ei se ole mikään ikä, neljäkymmentä. Hyvä
mies se vain on. (Katsoo ulos ikkunasta.) Joku tuolla tulee, se on vain
jalkamies. Taitaa olla Pentti.
_Ulla_. Se tulee saamaan maksua siitä tavaranvedosta.
_Isä_. Niin oikein. Siinä se sitten on se oikea kannakselainen.
Köyhä kuin kirppu ja niin laiska, ettei se saa sitä lattiankokoista
peltoaankaan hoidetuksi. Joskus se kohentelee sitä pikkuruisen, ja
sitten ala taas olla ja töllistellä ja kuljeskella, niinkuin ne tekevät
täällä päin.
_Ulla_. Älkää, se tulee.
TOINEN KOHTAUS.
Edelliset. Pentti.
_Pentti_. Hyvvää päivää.
_Isä_. Päivää.
_Ulla_. Päivää.
_Isä_. Käy istumaan.
_Pentti_. Työ taiattakkii varttuu vierait?
_Isä_. Niinhän tässä tehdään. Ja voidaanhan se näin naapurismiehelle
sanoa, että hyviä vieraita odotetaankin.
_Pentti_. Vai hyvvii oikee?
_Isä_. Ei sen parempia kuin sulhasia. (Pentti katsoo nopeasti Ullaan.)
Kuuluikos se jo auton tuuttaus? Ei tainnut olla vielä?
_Pentti_. Vai sulhasii. Keitäs nää oisiit?
_Isä_ (muka välinpitämättömästi). Eivät ne ole täällä tunnettuja. Se on
tämä eräs maatilanomistaja, herra Suvonen. Se tulee omalla autollaan.
_Pentti_. Se onkii sitt tietyst oikee rikas sulhane.
_Isä_. Onhan sillä sellainen talontapainen, pari sataa hehtaaria
viljelysmaata.
_Pentti_. Ohoh. Onha siin peltoo.
_Isä_. Ja renkipojasta se alkoi, tämä herra Suvonen. Sillä on näet
sellainen silmä, että se osaa ostaa ja myydä, ja se vaihteli taloja
eikä se hellittänyt, ennenkuin oli rahat pussissa. Se on oikea, oikea
mies ja onkin.
_Pentti_. Silt tuntuu.
_Isä_. Ei täällä Kannaksella semmoisia miehiä olekaan. Täällä jos on
kuka mökin perinyt, niin siinä hän istuu elämänsä loppuun eikä nouse
siitä mihinkään. Sinäkin, Pentti, olisit vähän toimeliaampi, niin ei
tarvitsisi kykkiä sellaisessa mökinrähjassä iänikuisesti.
_Pentti_. Onha tääll Kannaksellkii talonvaihtajii ja kulassii. Mutt ei
se tunnu raha näill kaua pysyvä.
_Isä_. Ei tämä herra Suvonen ole mikään kulassi. Se on kova työntekijä
ja ymmärtää katsoa perään asioitaan. Siksi se on menestynyt. En minä
antaisi tyttäreni mennä kulassille. Mutta en minä myöskään antaisi
hänen mennä näille täkäläisille töllistelijöille. (Nousee.) Jaa, minä
tuonkin nyt ne rahtivetorahat. Kuuntele sinä, Ulla, jos se tuuttaa.
(Menee.)
KOLMAS KOHTAUS.
Ulla. Pentti.
_Ulla_ (joka jo vähän aikaisemmin on järjestellyt tukkaansa ja pukuaan
ja istuutunut odottamaan, koriiommel käsissään). Niin, kyllä minäkin
sanon niinkuin isä, että voisit sinäkin olla vähän toimeliaampi.
Sinä siellä hiljaa näpertelet ja kuhnustelet, etkä sinä pääse siitä
mihinkään parempaan elämään.
_Pentti_ (sävyisästi). Mimmosee parempaa elämää?
_Ulla_. No sellaiseen kuin esimerkiksi tämän Suvosen elämä.
Suvosella on talo kuin linna, ja hän kulkee omassa autossa ja omassa
moottoriveneessä. Sillä on moottorivenekin.
_Pentti_. Venehä se on miulkii.
_Ulla_ (nauraen). Onhan sinulla vene. Oikea tavallisen hyvä seula.
_Pentti_. Napakka vene. Siin vennees sie oot souelt siekii. Vieläks sie
muistat?
_Ulla_ (lyhyesti). Mitä niistä viimevuotisista.
_Pentti_. Mitäs heist.
_Ulla_. Tai sen minä kyllä muistan, että siellä teillä päin oli
satakieli! Tuleekohan se tänäkin kesänä?
_Pentti_. Tullohaa se. Sehä se saakii lohutella minnuu tänä kesän,
millo paiskaa ikäväks — ku ei tänä kesän taia muuta seuraa ollakkaa. Se
ko sitt kujertaa monell viisii, se ko haastaa monell kielell. Viel mie
monta kertaa valvo sen kerall ja muistele viimekesäsii.
_Ulla_. Ei pidä muistella.
_Pentti_. A miksei? Enhä mie murehi, vaikk mie muistele. Murhe tekköö
pahat ajatukset. Murhe mänettää ihmise sielukii. Mie vaa muistele
lystiksei. Vielhä mie laula niit entisii lauluikii. (Hyräilee.) Toi
tyttö on kaunis — kaunis kuin kukka — Sinua lemmin — lemminkös hukkaan?
_Ulla_ (on antanut käsityön vaipua ja hyräilee hymyillen, silmät
uneksivina). Salassa lemmin — tiedä ei kukkaan — Sinua lemmin —
lemminkös hukkaan? (Tarttuu työhön, sanoo nopeasti.) Niin, osaathan
sinä laulaa.
_Pentti_. Sehä se tekköö ihmise iloseks. Vaikk mie mänisi mihi
vieraasee laaksoo tai erämaalla, ni miull on ratto kerall.
_Ulla_ (vähän katkerasti). Hyvähän se on, että sinulla on hauska elämä.
_Pentti_. Eihä se miu elämäi mikkää maalima hyvä oo, jos sitä käyt

_Pentti_. Totta kai se hyväks on. Tai ehkä se olkii tätä siu onnejais,
mikä siull nyt tulloo. Muistat sie ku myö viime kesän laulettii, ett:
Rikkaan miehen pelloll kasvo —: ripsikästä kauraa. Soppiiha tätä köyhän
lasta — pilkata ja nauraa?
_Ulla_ (lyhyesti). En minä sellaista muista.
NELJÄS KOHTAUS.
Edelliset. Isä.
_Isä_ (tulee ja ojentaa rahaa Pentille). Tässä olisi.
_Pentti_ (nousten). Kiitoksii. (Pistää rahat taskuunsa.) Eikä sitt
muuta ku hyväst.
_Isä_ (ikkunan luona). Eihän sitä ilman kahvia tällaisena päivänä.
Juodaan nyt yhdessä, kun herra Suvonen tulee. Siellähän se auto jo
tuuttaa. No, suutari, siellähän se on jo seisomassa. (Rientää ulos ja
palaa heti Suvosen kanssa.)
VIIDES KOHTAUS.
Edelliset. Suvonen.
_Suvonen_. Hyvää päivää.
_Ulla_ (iloisesti ja kohteliaasti). Hyvää päivää, tervetuloa.
_Suvonen_. Kiitos. (Tervehtii Penttiäkin kädestä ja esittelee itsensä).
Suvonen. (Pentti mumisee nimensä.)
_Isä_. Istukaa, Suvonen.
_Suvonen_. Kiitos. (Istuutuu.)
_Isä_. Jo me odotimme Suvosta viime viikolla.
_Suvonen_. Jaa, niinhän se oli puhuttu, mutta tuli tärkeä este.
_Pentti_. Mikäs este se jaksoi piättää tällaiselt matkalt?
_Suvonen_. Porsaanosto se oli.
_Pentti_ (kohteliaasti). Vai porsaanosto?
_Isä_. Se onkin tärkeä asia.
_Suvonen_. Ja nyt täytyy pitää kiirettä kotiin, että näkee, miten ne
uudet porsaat viihtyvät ja tykkäävät itsestään.
_Isä_. Niin oikein, isännän silmän pitää olla joka paikassa.
_Ulla_ (joka on alkanut kaataa kahvia kuppeihin). Olkaa hyvä.
(Pentille, joka on istunut etäämpänä.) Ole hyvä, Pentti.
_Isä_. No mitäs muuta kuuluu sinne päin?
_Suvonen_. No mitäs, talo jäi paikalleen. Se onkin nyt keltainen.
Se tuli maalattua tänä vuonna, syystä että minä tahdoin sen
näkyväisemmäksi.. Nyt se näkyy monen kilometrin päähän, kirkas
keltainen. Onhan se nätti talo nyt, ja nätti tilakin, ei mikään
erikoinen, vaikka on se meidän pitäjän suurin. Ja onhan siihen tullut
pantua rahaakin jonkin verran. Ostettiin se uusi traktorikin tänä
vuonna ja uusi separaattori ja yhtä ja toista. Maatakin on tullut
ostettua lisää, syystä että kun sitä kerran on tila, niin pitää sen nyt
olla jonkinlainen.
_Isä_. Ei niitä sellaisia tiloja ole monta.
_Suvonen_ (maiskuttaa vaatimattomasti). Kyllä siellä pitäisi kaikki
olla jämttiä ja hyvässä kunnossa. Viime vuonnahan minä ostin saliinkin
ne uudet huonekalut, syystä että ei sitä salissa voi oikeastaan muuta
käyttää kuin punapuuta. Kellä sitä nyt nykyään on oikeastaan salissa
mitään muuta kuin punapuuta? Piti ostaa kymmenen tuolia, kun se on
meillä se sali niin suuri. (Katsoo, ympärilleen.) Taitaa se olla neljä
kertaa niin suuri kuin tämä tupa.
_Ulla_. Taitaa se olla viisikin kertaa.
_Suvonen_. Taitaa olla. Ostin minä sinne keväällä kattokruununkin. On
niissä hintaa niissä kruunuissakin, kakstuhatta kolmesataa markkaa
se maksoi. Ja ostin minä juuri toissapäivänä sinne taulunkin,
neljäkymmentäviisi markkaa ilman raamia. Minä kyllä panetan siihen
raaminkin.
_Isä_ (ihaillen ja innoissaan). Taitaa olla talo sellaisessa
oorningissa, ettei mahdu enää parannusta minnekään.
_Suvonen_ (myhäillen). Onhan se oorningissa, vaikka tulisi uusi emäntä
jo huomenna.
_Isä_. Niin se pitää olla. Sellaiseen taloon kelpaa morsiamen, mennä.
Otappas esimerkkiä taas, sinä Pentti. Onkos sinulla talo valmiina
morsianta varten?
_Pentti_. Valmiinha tää on. Lantakii on valmiin vetämätä ja muutkii
kevättyöt valmiin tekemätä.
_Suvonen_ (nauraen). Valmis on talo.
_Pentti_. Ja yksinää ku mie elän siin mökiss, ni valmisha sekkii on
likane, naise pestäväks. Ja taitaa miull olla tässä takiskii reiät
valmiit häne paikattaviksee.
_Ulla_ (nauraen). Tyttö raukka, joka sinne tulee.
_Pentti_. Mikä raukka hää on? Sehä tytöst onkii hyvä, ku hänt oikee
miss tarvitaa.
_Isä_. Sellaisia ne on nämä kannakselaiset. Suuta ne osaa pieksää,
mutta ei ne muuta osaa mitään. Ne ovat ja katselevat ja kävelevät
eivätkä saa ruokaa suuhunsa. Oorningista eivät ne tiedä mitään eivätkä
oikeasta työstä.
_Suvonen_. Ei sitä ilman oorninkia ja työntekemistä nouse niin
mihinkään. Sen tiedän minä. Minun sanani, se on: jämtti. Jämttiydestä
raha tulee. Kun minä olin vielä köyhä ja ilman mitään, niin minä
en ollut mikään lorvehtija, vaan minä ajattelin jo silloin elämän
todellisia vakavia kysymyksiä, että millä tavalla muutamat pääsevät
rikkaiksi, kun toiset eivät pääse? Ja se johtuu siitä, että toiset
tervehtivät ja ajattelevat kaikenlaista muuta, mutta ei ansiota. Sillä
tavalla minä noin huomasin ja mietin jo poikasena, ja siitä se alkoi,
että nyt ollaan näin kuin ollaan: tavallisissa varoissa, täytyy sanoa.
_Isä_. Niin se on ihmisen elettävä. Sillä tavalla sitä sitten
vähitellen ostaa tilat sekä autot.
_Ulla_. Niin, Suvosellahan on nyt auto.
_Suvonen_ (maiskuttaen). Tulihan se ostettua; syystä että eihän sitä
oikeastaan tule toimeen ilman autoa.
_Pentti_. Eihän sitä.
_Suvonen_ (katsoo häneen tuimasti). Niin, meikäläinen. (Toisille,
vaatimattomasti.) Ei se ole Fordi tämä, se on Sevroletti. Ei se ole
mikään huono koje, kyllä sillä pääsee menemään, sillä on vahvat
sisukset. Ei ne huokeita ole nämä, kolmekymmentäviisi tuhatta. Ja
sitten pitää olla safööri, ei se ole ilmainen sekään. Mutta hyvä tällä
Sevroletilla on mennä, toissapäivänäkin minä menin sataviisikymmentä
kilometriä, kun kävin tilaamassa häävaatteet.
_Pentti_. Mitäs ne maksoi?
_Suvonen_. Häh?
_Ulla_ (nopeasti). Minä tahtoisin oppia ohjaamaan autoa. Se olisi vasta
hauskaa.
_Suvonen_. Ei se taida oikein sopia talonemännälle olla saföörinä.
Mutta se pitäisikin panna katon alle se piili. Jos mentäisiinkin vähän
tarkastelemaan sitä. Tulisiko Ulla vähän katselemaan sitä?
_Isä_ (nousee). Tule, Ulla, katsomaan.
_Ulla_. Tulen minä heti. Menkää te vain ensin.
KUUDES KOHTAUS.
Ulla. Pentti.
_Ulla_. Menekin tästä pois pilkkaamasta ja viisastelemasta. Kyllä sinä
osaat pilkata, mutta et muuta.
_Pentti_. Enhä mie tietyst voi hankkii morsiamellei punapuisii
salimööpelii, vaikk herra Suvone sano, ett ei sitä muita oikiastaa voi
kellää olla.
_Ulla_. Et sinä taida nähdä punapuuta eläissäsi.
_Pentti_. Onha miull siell miu salissai hella vieress vessaavi, mää
tiiä vaikk se ois punapuuta.
_Ulla_. Pilkkaa sinä vain, mutta on se sellainen rakkaus enemmän
arvoinen, joka tekee työtä ja ponnistaa, kuin sellainen, joka vain
soittaa suuta.
_Pentti_. Voip olla, voip olla.
_Ulla_. Sellainen vakava rakkaus, se hankkii rahaa ja kodin eikä anna
minkään esteiden tulla tielle.
_Pentti_. Paitse porsaanoston.
_Ulla_. Joko sinä lähdet tästä!
_Pentti_. Ei riiellä nyt. Joha mie nään, ett teill on asjat selvät
keskenänne, eikähä miull oo mittää siihe sanomist. Onneks olkoo vaa.
_Ulla_ (ylpeästi). Kiitoksia.
_Pentti_. Enkähä mie muuta toivokkaa ku ett siull tulis onnekas elämä.
_Ulla_ (seisoo valvomassa kahvipannua hellan luona). Ei minun
elämässäni mitään vikaa ole. Kohta minä kävelen muilla mailla ja vähän
paremmissa olosuhteissa.
_Pentti_. Näikkö sie sillo laulat, ett »Lehtimetsän siimeksessä — on
lintu lauleskellut. — Sinua minä, poika nuori, olen ajatellut.»
_Ulla_ (polkien jalkaa).. Jokos sinä lähdet?
_Pentti_. Tokkoha se tyytyy se siu nuor sieluis ajattelemaa koko aja
traktoriloi ja possuloi?
_Ulla_. Kyllä minä hoidan oman sieluni.
SEITSEMÄS KOHTAUS.
Edelliset. Suvonen.
_Suvonen_ (katsahtaa epäluuloisesti Penttiin). Eihän se Ulla tullutkaan.
_Ulla_. Tulen minä heti.
_Suvonen_. Niin, kas meillä onkin vähän uusi tuuma. Me ajattelimme
tässä, että jos olisi lähteä tästä suoraa päätä pappilaan kuulutuksille.
_Ulla_ (hämmästyneenä). Pappilaani
_Suvonen_. Niin, sinnehän se on meno kumminkin. Saahan sen tehdä heti,
niin se on sitten tehty.
_Ulla_. Ei tässä nyt sellainen hirmukiire ole.
_Suvonen_. On se vähän kiire, kun pitäisi joutua tästä kotiin.
_Ulla_. Kotiin? Vastahan sitä on tultu. (Leikillisesti). Ei sitä nyt
ole sellainen kiire kotiin, kun tullaan morsianta hakemaan.
_Suvonen_. Se on vaan se, kun siellä voi olla niillä uusilla porsailla
ikävä.
_Ulla_ (kivahtaen). Porsailla ikävä? Senkö tähden pitäisi lennättää
morsian pappilaan kuin tulipalolla?
_Suvonen_. Porsaat on tärkeitä eläimiä maataloudessa, kyllähän Ulla sen
tietää.
_Ulla_. Jos ne on tärkeämpiä kuin morsian, niin Suvonen on hyvä vaan ja
menee niitä lohduttamaan.
_Suvonen_ (närkästyneenä). Mitä Ulla sanoo? Eikö työtä pidä ajatella
ennemmin kuin huvia?
_Ulla_. Ei tarvitse ajatella porsaita ennemmin kuin morsianta. Ei
sitä nyt rynnätä tällä tavalla pappilaan sentähden vain, että porsaat
tahtovat. Sen minä sanon, ja se on sanottu.
_Suvonen_. Rynnätäänpä niinkin, jos minä sanon, että rynnätään.
_Ulla_. Vai niin, mutta jos minä sanon, että ei.
_Suvonen_. Niin silloin se saa ollakin ei, ja minä lähden autolla
kotiin.
_Ulla_. Suvonen on hyvä vain.
_Suvonen_ (loukkaavasti). Ja parempi se onkin. Alkoi jo kaduttaa,
kun tuli luvatuksi tämä asia. Parempi se on aina mennä naimisiin
samavaraisen kanssa.
_Ulla_ (vapisten suuttumuksesta). — Vai niin. No, ei tarvitse katua
enää. Hyvästi vain, ja terveisiä porsaille.
_Suvonen_. Hyvästi, senkin — (Paiskaa oven kiinni jälkeensä.)
KAHDEKSAS KOHTAUS.
Ulla. Pentti.
(He seisovat hetken verran liikkumattomina ja tuijottavat oveen.)
_Pentti_. Sinn se nyt kaikkos, se rikas sulhane.
_Ulla_. Voi! Hulluko minä olin! (Kääntyy Penttiin päin, melkein itkien
harmista.) Se on sinun syysi. Sinä se ärsytit minua niillä porsailla.
Nyt se meni!
_Pentti_. Oikee oikiastaa sie suutuit väärä vuoks täll kertaa. Oha ne
possuraukatkii elävii olentoi, ja säälihä näit on, ko ne uuess paikassa
ikävöivät.
_Ulla_ (puoleksi nyyhkyttäen). No se on sitten vielä! Ensin ärsytät
minua, niin että minä ajan pois sulhaseni, ja sitten alat yhtäkkiä
puolustaa niitä porsaita. (Rientää ikkunan luo.) Nyt se menee, nyt se
menee! (Vääntää käsiään.)
_Pentti_. Älä sie hassuttele nyt, Ulla. Ethä sie ois tosissaa voint
mennä naimisii tää tällase Suvose kanss.
_Ulla_ (yhä ikkunan luona). Miksen olisi? Ja tuolla se nyt panee auton
käyntiin. Voi, voi, se olisi voinut olla minun autoni!
_Pentti_. Älä haasta turhii, Ulla. Ethä sie rakasta hänt, eikä hää ois
kyent hankkimaa siull mittää oikiaa elämise onnee.
_Ulla_. Olisi se hankkinut tilan ja auton ja paljon muuta.
_Pentti_. Mutt ei se ihmine tyyvy ajattelemaa vaa tavaroi ja
huonekallui. Pittää sitä elämässä olla parempaakii, eihä se muute oo
