HERTTUALA (tulee sisään). Kauppias tulee tänne vaan — näyttämölle!
Päällikkö sanoi, että täällä tulee jonkinlainen äkseeraus.
MALLINEN (hyvin lihava ja isovatsainen mies, tulee hitaasti sisään).
Minä sen sanoin — minä! Eikö Herttuala tiedä, että minä olen tämän
seuratalon isännöitsijä — minä. Eikä kukaan muu sano yhtään mitään —
mitä?
HERTTUALA. Ei tietysti kukaan sano mitään. Mutta päällikkö antoi —
suojeluskuntapäällikkö antoi minulle määräyksen —
MALLINEN. Minä määräykset annan tässä talossa — ja minä olen määrännyt,
että nyt me äkseeraamme täällä — mitä?
HERTTUALA. Jahah, jahah! Näyttämö on kunnossa, kuten kauppias näkee.
MALLINEN. Mitä minä näen? Mitä?' En minä näe yhtään mitään! Mitä?
HERTTUALA. Tyhjähän sen piti ollakin —
MALLINEN. Kuuma täällä on! Niin halivetin kuuma kuin ryssän helvetissä.
HERTTUALA. Kylmähän siellä on ollut — kertomusten mukaan.
MALLINEN. Kylmä? Mitä? Siellä _oli_ kylmä — torakoitten tappamista
varten — mutta Suomen suojeluskunnat ovat nyt lämmittäneet uunit
turkintulipunaisiksi — polsuja varten. Nyt ne peijakkaat hikoilevat
siellä aivan julmettuneesti. (Löyhyttelee nenäliinalla.) Miksi ei
sentään tuolla salissa olisi voitu järjestää äkseerausta — olisi kai
siellä viileämpi — jos avaisi akkunat ja ovet — ja — mitä?
HERTTUALA. Eikö kauppias huomaa, kuinka täynnä se on. Katsokaa!
(Viittaa katsomoon). Koko seuran rihkama on sinne mätätty tuoleille,
penkeille ja käytäville. — Mutta nythän on kesä. Eikö voisi ulkona —?
MALLINEN. Ei! Sitä ei voi! Eikö vahtimestari ymmärrä, että me emme
vielä ymmärrä yhtään mitään. Mitä? Eikä sellaista ymmärtämättömyyttä
voi näyttää kaikelle kansalle. Mitä?
HERTTUALA. Ei tietysti!
MALLINEN. Pankaa nyt edes tuo näyttämön ovi selkiselälleen — minä
tukehdun täällä — mitä?
HERTTUALA. Sehän on auki — mutta minä koitan, jos aukon saisi venymään.
(Menee ulos).
MALLINEN. Pentele! Jos ei täällä Himppulan kylässä olisi akkoja eikä
kakaroita, niin olisi kai voinut harjoitella minun puutarhassani —
mutta — (Katselee ympärilleen.) Mitä? Ei ainuttakaan tuolia! Halloo!
VIRSILÄ (hidas ja uninen vetelys, tulee). Mikä hätänä? Häh?
MALLINEN. Ahaa! Unilukkari! Joko sinäkin tulet? Oletko jo herännyt?
Mitä? Meneppäs nyt tuonne alas jonnekin ja hae minulle tuoli —
VIRSILÄ. Mitä me tuolilla teemme! Eihän sellaista tarvita.
MALLINEN. Se tarvitaan täällä aivan justiinsa heti! Minä tarvitsen.
Mars matkaan! — ymmärrätkö — mitä?
VIRSILÄ. En minä ymmärrä — mutta tuolin kyllä voin hakea siitä
huolimatta —
MALLINEN. Oikein, Virsilä! Sinusta tulee hyvä sotilas — sinä osaat
totella. Mitä? Ja totteleminen on ensimäinen ehto. Mitä?
VIRSILÄ. En minä sanonut yhtään mitään. (Menee.)
MALLINEN. Entä jos siirtäisi koko harjoituksen — minä luulen, että on
ukkosta ilmassa, koska niin kamalasti hiottaa. Mutta — mitenkäs se on
— huomenna on maanantai — ja tuo leipuri peijakas leipoo huomenna — on
sekin kamalaa, kuinka paljon ihmiset popsivat vehnäpullia —
HERTTUALA (tulee). Minä nostin saranoilta pois yhden oven, joka ei
pysynyt auki —
MALLINEN (riisuu takkinsa). Sinä olet hyvä mies, Herttuala, vaikka
minä en oikein tykkää sinun nimestäsi — mitä? Herttuala! — Se on liian
prameileva — näin tasavallan maaseudulla ja minun vahtimestarilleni —
HERTTUALA. Seuratalon vahtimestarihan minä —
MALLINEN. No, se on sama — yks' ja se sama — minä olen koko seura
ja kaikki — mitä? Tämä talo on minulle kiinnitetty — ja kaikki mitä
talossa on. Mitä?
HERTTUALA (hymyillen). Vai niin! No, ehkä me sentään tulemme toimeen
keskenämme. Minä en ole ollenkaan herttuamainen tavoiltani —
MALLINEN. (nauraa). Herttuamainenko — tasavallan Himppulassa! Ha,
ha, ha! Saakeli soikoon! Sinä olet fiksu mies — ha, ha, ha! Ymmärrät
leikkiä — mitä?
HERTTUALA. En minä sanonut mitään.
MALLINEN. Etkä saakaan sanoa silloin, kun minä sinua kehun — tai moitin
— mitä?
HERTTUALA. Ei yhtikäs mitään!
MALLINEN. Se on hyvä. Juuri niin! Minä alan tykätä sinusta. Kuulehan!
Sinä ehkä vähän autat minua. Minulla on yksi paha paikka — tässä
vatsassani —
HERTTUALA (peräytyy). Vatsassa! En minä voi sitä auttaa —
MALLINEN. Voit sinä. Voit vallan hyvin! Ajattelehan nyt! Kun
harjoitellaan, niin kaikki käy kovin hyvin siihen asti, kun komennetaan
maahan vatsalleen — mutta silloin tulee minulle tenä —
HERTTUALA. Kauppias istuisi ensin ja laskeutuisi hiljalleen —
MALLINEN. Sen minä tiedän penteleen hyvin. Osaan kai sen konstin. Niin
minä teenkin. Mutta sitten! Minä en pääse ylös? Minä olen harjoitellut
koko viikon — mutta ei se siitä parane —
HERTTUALA. Eikö kauppias pääse ylös ollenkaan?
MALLINEN. Ollenkaan! Mitä? Pääsenhän minä sitten joskus — mutta,
katsos, kun sodassa on niin riivatun kiire — mitä?
HERTTUALA. En minä sano yhtään mitään!
MALLINEN. Mutta sinun pitää sanoa — että minä tiedän, ymmärrätkö sinä!
Kuulehan nyt! Sinun pitää seisoa minun vieressäni ja auttaa minut ylös
— mitä?
HERTTUALA. Sodassako?
MALLINEN. Äsh! Sodassa minä en kaadu koskaan — ennenkuin minut ammutaan
— minä vain lataan ja ammun — palttua minä annan upseerille — minä vain
hyökkään ja ammun — kai nyt sen käsität — mitä? Mutta näissä juuttaan
harjoituksissa täytyy totella upseeria, muuten se huutaa äänensä
käheäksi. Ymmärrätkö? Mitä? Autatko sinä minut ylös tuosta lattialta,
häh?
HERTTUALA. Jos vain ei kutsuta telefooniin juuri silloin (puhelin soi)
kuten nyt juuri.
MALLINEN. Mene nyt telefooniin — ja sulje se sitten äkseerauksen
ajaksi. Ei kenenkään tarvitse soittaa silloin, kun isänmaan
turvallisuus on vasta harjoituksen alla.
VIRSILÄ (tulee, kantaen keinutuolia).
HERTTUALA. Minun keinutuolianiko sinä riivattu tänne raastat? (Menee.)
VlRSILÄ. Kun vaimonne kuuli, että se oli kauppias Mallista varten,
sanoi hän, että keinutuoli se pitää olla.
MALLINEN (istuu tuolille). Höh, höh! Ellei naisia olisi —
niin mitä olisi koko suojeluskunta-homma? Ja olisiko silloin
suojeluskuntalaisiakaan — mitä?
VIRSILÄ (katselee ympärilleen). Minun ehkä pitää sitten mennä istumaan
tuonne katsomoon.
MALLINEN. Seiso sinä vaan, muuten sinä nukut!
KEKKERI (täyteläinen vehnä-pullan muotoinen, mutta silti ketterä ja
eloisa, tulee). No päivää, hyvät naapurit! Olipa onni ettei päällikkö
ole vielä tullut. Pelkäsin jo myöhästyväni — mutta eipä hätää — eihän
Torppalakaan ole vielä tullut —
TORPPALA (tulee). Täällä tulee Torppala —
MALLINEN. Sinä, Torppala, kuljet aina tuon Kekkerin perässä — aina sinä
vaan haluat kekkeröidä —
TORPPALA. Kekkeröidä! Kylläpä. Sillä miehellä on sitten nimi päin
prinkkalaa. Kuulehan, Kekkeri, muuta nimesi Rääppiäiseksi! Ei sulla
ollut edes limonaatipulloa janoiselle miehelle.
MALLINEN. Rusthollari on ihan oikeassa! Rääppiäinen on hyvä nimi
sinulle. En ainakaan minä ole vielä koskaan sinun kekkereissäsi ollut.
Rääppiäinen saat olla!
KEKKERI. Olkoon sitten! Mutta hyvä nimi on sullakin, Mallinen. Sinä
aina kirjoitat a:n niin huonosti, että se oli eilisessäkin laskussa
selvä Mullinen.
KAIKKI (nauravat).
TORPPALA. Mutta ei kenenkään nimi ole niin profeetallinen kuin minun.
Minulla on manttaalin talo ja nimeni on Torppala. Eikä se kohta olekaan
muuta kuin torppa, kun vaan kaikki herrat Leksit pääsevät valtaan.
VILLE IKÄMIES (tulee). Ahaa! Kaikki on koolla. Hyvää päivää! Ollaanpa
sitten nopeita. Toinen harjoitus odottaa.
MALLINEN (nousematta). Hyvää päivää, Ville!
VILLE IKÄMIES (kuulematta). Riviin! — Asento!
KAIKKI yrittelevät asettua riviin suurella vaivalla.
VILLE IKÄMIES. Mistä se johtuu, että Virsilä on tänään pitempi Mallista?
MALLINEN. Oho! Ei maar sentään!
VILLE IKÄMIES. On. Virsilä on pitempi.
VIRSILÄ. Minulla on uudet kengät — ja korkeammat korot.
MALLINEN. Et sinä sittenkään ole minua pitempi. Minä en vaihda. Tässä
on minun paikkani.
VILLE IKÄMIES. Samantekevä! — Rivi suoraan! Mallinen taaksepäin! Vatsa
liian etualalla! Hemmetti! Nyt on Mallisen pää metrin päässä rivin
takapuolella. Ei käy. Eteenpäin! (Katsoo Mallisen puolelta.) Nyt ei
tästä näe ainuttakaan muuta miestä.
VIRSILÄ. Tuo Mallinen on mainio kulkemaan edellä. Ei ainoakaan kuula
osu meihin muihin. Himppulan komppania on turvattu.
VILLE IKÄMIES. Rivi suoraan! Asento! No, pojat! Ei nyt seistä kuin
torkkuva koni päivänpaisteessa! Pää pystyyn! Rinta ulos ja vatsa sisään!
VIRSILÄ. Ei se tuolta Malliselta mene!
MALLINEN. Minä en olekaan kuivettunut kapakala, minä!
VILLE IKÄMIES. No, nyt kädet roikkuvat kuin märät mänttihihnat!
Käsivarsien riippuessa vapaasti, painetaan kämmenet ja sormenpäät
reisiä vasten, niin että kyynärpäät osoittavat suoraan sivulle. Kas
näin! Ei sormet haralla! Sormet ovat suljetut — ja peukalo pitkin
etusormen sisäpintaa, keskisormi housun saumalla.
TORPPALA. Miten se peukalo —?
VILLE IKÄMIES. Pitkin etusormen sisäpintaa — näin!
TORPPALA. Tuo vasen peukalo ei mene — löin siihen kerran hakokirveellä.
VILLE IKÄMIES. No, niin hyvin kuin menee, keskisormi housun saumalle —
näin.
KEKKERI (kopeloi sormet hajalla reisiään). Saumalla —
VILLE IKÄMIES. Mitä se Kekkeri kopeloi sormillaan?
KEKKERI. Minä en ymmärrä miten se räätäli-pahus lie laittanut nämä — en
minä löydä saumaa ollenkaan —
TORPPALA. Mihinkäs sinä sitten pistät keskisormet, jos ei sulla
housuissa saumoja ole ollenkaan?
KEKKERI (löytää sisäsauman). Kyllähän täällä sisäpuolella olisi —
VILLE IKÄMIES. Virsilä ei saa nostaa olkapäitään siten! Vähän vain
taaksepäin, jotta rinta nousee. — Kantapäät yhteen, Mallinen!
MALLINEN. Ei ne ota pysyäkseen yhdessä.
VILLE IKÄMIES. No, mahdollisimman lähellä.
MALLINEN. Mahdollisimman kauaksi ne aina pyrkivät —
VILLE IKÄMIES. Jalkaterät enemmän erilleen! Virsilän kääntyvät
sisäänpäin!
MALLINEN. Se on kompura-kinttu, tuo Virsilä!
VILLE IKÄMIES (korjaa kenkänsä kärjellä). Nuo varpaat sinne — ja nuo
varpaat tänne — hei, Mallinen — ei niin leveälle —
TORPPALA. Mitä se sanoi? Varpaat sinne ja tänne? (Katsoo varpaisiinsa.)
KEKKERI. Mitäs niistä jaloistasi katselet! Kai ne ovat jossakin siellä
alhaalla!
VILLE IKÄMIES. Asento! Käännös vasempaan — päin!
KAIKKI kääntyvät oikein, mutta
VIRSILÄ (kääntyy oikealle). Älä nyt, Mallinen kulta, tuo tuota vatsaasi
minun syliini!
MALLINEN. Etkös sinä unilukkari-pakana tiedä, mikä on sinun vasen
kätesi? Mitä? Käänny heti ympäri! Minä luulen, että sinä käytät nuuskaa.
VIRSILÄ (katsoo taakseen nolona). No, minne päin se käännös sitten oli?
MALLINEN. Vasemmalle! Kiepahda heti!
VIRSILÄ (kääntyy). Minä niin vahvasti ajattelin toisapäin —
VILLE IKÄMIES. Käännös oikeaan — päin!
KAIKKI (kääntyvät oikein, kasvot katsomoon päin, mutta)
MALLINEN (kääntyy vasemmalle, joten hänen selkänsä on katsomoon päin).
VIRSILÄ kurkistaa. Mallista vierellään, kimakasti. Pojat! Mihinkäs
Mallisen vatsa joutui?
VILLE IKÄMIES. Tästähän ei tule yhtään mitään! Tehän olette kuin
Niniven lapset — ette tiedä oikeasta ettekä vasemmasta kädestänne. Piru
teidät perii, jos joudutte oikean upseerin kynsiin.
MALLINEN (hievahtamatta). Joko se Virsilä taas seisoo nurin-narin, mitä?
VILLE IKÄMIES. Ei! Kyllä syy on nyt Mallisen.
MALLINEN (kääntyy katsomoon). No, eikös tuo Virsilä minua puijannut!
Minä olin ihan varma, että hän taas kääntyy väärin päin — mutta eipäs —
no, kerran sokeakin kana — mitä?
VILLE IKÄMIES. Tästä ei tule yhtään mitään! Tehän nukutte keskellä
kirkasta sunnuntai-päivää. Kyllä minä teihin panen eloa. Asento!
Täyskäännös oikeaan — päin! Tahdissa — mars — Täyskäännös vasempaan —
päin! — Maahan!
KAIKKI (heittäytyvät suinpäin maahan vatsalleen, mutta)
MALLINEN (alkaa hitaasti yritellä istumaan). Ei, ei! Älkää kiirehtikö!
Ei se vaan niin käy — tämä on kaikkein pahin temppu — enkä minä koskaan
sodassa tällaisia yrittele — (On päässyt istumaan, kääntyy kyljelleen
ja siitä vatsalleen.) Oh — höh!
VILLE IKÄMIES. No, siinä te nyt makaatte kuin läkkikalat! Onko mokomaa
ennen nähty! Tehän pilaatte koko Himppulan maineen! Onko teitä opetettu
tuolla tavalla retkottamaan?
MALLINEN. Kuule, Ville! Älä suutu! Mennään meille kahville — ja
koetetaan sitten harjoitella siellä puutarhassa —
VILLE IKÄMIES. Nyt on harjoitus-aika, eikä kahviaika. Teidän pitäisi
ajatella, minkä vuoksi me kaikkea tätä teemme — ajatella isänmaan
turvallisuutta!
MALLINEN. Isänmaan turvallisuuden me hoidamme sodassa — tätä me teemme
vain sotaa odotellessa,
HERTTUALA (tulee nopeasti). Ahaa! Siinähän se kauppias jo retkottaa
valmiina. Kyllä minä pian — (Aikoo ryhtyä nostamaan.)
MALLINEN. Älä koske, perhana! Odota nyt, että upseeri ensin komentaa —
ei tästä ennen nousta, vaikka joulu tulisi.
HERTTUALA. Voisinhan alkaa puhjauksen vähän aikaisemmin — että
ehtisimme toisten kanssa yhdessä —
MALLINEN. Kyllä minä ainakin Torppalan kanssa ehdin yhtaikaa — sillä
hänhän, kaikesta päättäen, on nukahtanut — mitä?
HERTTUALA. En minä sano mitään.
MALLINEN. Mutta sinun pitää sanoa! — Sano, minne se upseeri tästä
joutui?
HERTTUALA. Hän kävelee tuolla perällä — ja näyttää vihaisen näköiseltä,
MALLINEN. Hyvä, ettei ole mennyt tiehensä — ja unohtanut meitä tänne.
— Virsilä! Joko sinäkin nukut — mitä? (Nauraa.) Hih! Hih! Hih! —
Herttuala! Ole nyt varoillasi — kun kuulet komennuksen. Jos olet oikein
vikkelä, niin minä olen jaloillani ennen noita vietävän unikekoja.
VILLE IKÄMIES (äkkiä ja repäisevästi). Mars! Mars!
MALLINEN (kömpii ylös vahtimestarin auttamana). No, retuuta, retuuta,
mies! — Kas niin! Minähän olen aika vikkelä poika! (Huomaa toisten
makaavan.) Hst! — Kuule, Ville! Mennään meille kahville ja jätetään nuo
tuohon nukkumaan! Usko minua! Se on paras rangaistus heille. Hautaansa
asti koko Himppula heille tämän jälkeen nauraa — mitä?
VILLE IKÄMIES. En sanonut mitään!
MALLINEN (ottaa takkinsa). Mutta upseerin pitää komentaa jotakin
vapauttavaa minulle — ainoalle elossaolevalle!
VILLE IKÄMIES (puoliksi nauraen ja harmistuen). No, mars — kahville
sitten!
KAIKKI (nousevat nopeasti ylös). Jahah! Vai mennään sitten kahville!
VILLE IKÄMIES (kimmastuen). Mitä pentelettä tämä on?
VIRSILÄ (toisten nauraessa). Se oli sotatemppu! Sellaisia me osaamme
paljon! Ei ole hyvä vihollisen tulla!
TOISET. Niin! Ei ole hyvä tulla Himppulaan vihollisen.
