Näyttämö: Pienehkö talonpoikaispirtti. Peräseinällä ovi, sen vasemmalla

vasemmalla seinällä pöytä lavitsoineen, oikealla lasten talorakennuksia.
Esiripun noustessa istuu mummo oikealla takan luona kehräten, lapset
talopuuhissa.

TOINEN POIKA:
Siinäpä peippospari! Siinä vaan ei surut mieltä paina.
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Niin, veli veikkoseni! Noin ne pikku palleroiset kaksin puuhaelee,
talot rakentelee. Toinen isäntänä, toinen emäntänä. Kaksin lapset,
kaksin linnut, kaksin koivut kankahalla. Ymmärräthän veikkoseni?
TOINEN POIKA:
Mä enkö ymmärtäisi! Kaksin kaikki muut, kaksin aidan seipähätkin,
me vain yksin raadamme, rakennamme. Äitivanhuksenkin käsi jo miniän
kerkeää kättä avukseen kaipaa. Ja oma sydän on paras tulkki. Miksi se
väliin niin kiihkeästi lyö, miksi veri suonissa väliin niin tulisesti
virtailee, miksi selittämätön kaipuu, kaiho väliin mielen täyttää? —
Vaan miksi kysynkään, tiedämmehän molemmat, että (laulavat yhdessä):

Tänne taakse metsämaan
Sydämemme halaa,
Tääll’ on mieli ainiaan
Tänne toivo palaa:
Täällä metsämökissä
On kauniit kultasemme.
Vaikka polku pitkä on
Kivinen ja kaita,
Korpi kolkko, valoton,
Siit’ ei mitään haittaa:
Kultansa kun nähdä saa,
Ei muista matkan vaivaa.
MUMMO:
Vai sitä se tuuli metsän takaa humiseekin. Humiseepa hyvältä puolelta,
humiseepa vainen. Jos vanhalla on lupa arvata: kosiomatkalla pojat
lienee?
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
(Toverilleen): Se vielä puuttui, hyppäsimmepä kauniisti satimeen! Ei
ole näemmä onneksi laulaa kaikkein lintujen kuullen. — (Mummolle): Vai
tuulen suuntia se vanha äiti tunnustelee. Pikku kysymys: humisiko tuuli
niinpäin teidänkin nuorena ollessanne?
MUMMO:
Humisipa tietenkin. Se kuuluu sen tuulen tapoihin. Se niin vienosti
hyväilee nuorta poskipäätä. Mutta se tuuli humisee muutakin, ei
yksin keväisiä säveleitä, on sillä syksyisetkin äänensä. Se tietää
haastella paljon kevätunelmain haihtumisesta, paljon syksyn keltaisista
lehdistä, särkyneen onnen muruista. Voisin kertoa niistä teille pienen
tositarinan; jos halunnette kuulla. Luulen, ettei se olisi haitaksi
tähän aikaan.
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Mielellämme kuuntelemme.
TOINEN POIKA:
Kertokaahan, kertokaahan toki!
MUMMO:
Se tarina on hyvin lyhyt, mutta se on sittenkin kokonainen elämäkerta.
Kuulin erään äidin laulavan sitä tuuditellessaan pienoistaan uneen. Se
kuuluu: (laulaa):
Laulu u:o 3, sävel u:o 3.
Isäni rikast’,
Äitini rakast’,
Itse ma tahdoin kaunist’:
Rikkaus loppuu,
Rakkaus sammuu,
Kaunis on aina kaunis.
Kaunihin otin,
Rakkahan jätin,
Vielä sain rikkautta:
Kalpeni poski,
Hupeni raha,
Kaipaan nyt rakkautta.
Ehkä nyt ymmärrätte mitä tarkoitan?
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Ymmärrämme, ymmärrämme. Enpä voi kieltää että on miltei vedet
silmissäni.
TOINEN POIKA:
Tarinanne tosi lienee ja varoituksenne varsin paikallaan — vaikk’ei
juuri meille tarpeen. Me pojatpa aijommekin ottaa sekä rikkaan,
rakkaan että kauniin, ja sillä hyvä. Nähkääs: ketä rakastamme, hän on
aina mielestämme kaunis, ja kun meillä vaan on rakkautta, niin kyllä
Jumalalla on rikkautta, ja ketä taas rakastaisimme, ellemme rikasta ja
kaunista. Mitäs siihen sanotte?
MUMMO:
Kylläpä te tunnutte olevan aika — — —
(Isäntä ja emäntä tulevat).
EMÄNTÄ:
Kas, vieraita!
TOINEN POIKA:
Hyvää päivää emäntä! Terve talohon isäntä!
EMÄNTÄ:
Terve tulemaan pojat! Mitäs salon taakse kuuluu? Paistaako päivä?
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Paistaa ja ei paista, riippuen siitä miltä kannalta ottaa. Luulen että
salon takana vanhusten päivä on laskemassa iltaruskoon ja nuorten päivä
on vielä aamuruskon takana. Siksi: paistaa ja ei paista.
ISÄNTÄ:
Haasteleepa pojat peitetyin sanoin. Istukaa, honkapuuta painakaa!
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Kiitämme. Mutta ensin asia, sitten vieraana olo, se on vanha tapa
suomalainen.
ISÄNTÄ:
Kas vaan, niinhän pojat puhuu kuin miehet parrakkaat. Olenpa, totta
puhuen, hiukan utelias.
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Eihän se meidän asia itsessään mikään uusi ole. Onpahan vain vanha
ijänikuinen tarina. Saammeko kertoa?
EMÄNTÄ:
Kertokaa, kertokaa. Olen pelkkänä korvana.
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Se tarina alkaa näin: (laulavat yhdessä):
Laulu n:o 4, sävel n:o 4.
Kaksi ruusua on kasvanut laaksossa,
Jotka kauniisti kukoistaa,
Kaksi kulkijapoikaa on nähnyt ne,
Eikä voi niitä unhoittaa.
Ja he olisi kyllä ne poimineet,
Vieneet iloksi äidilleen,
Mutta nuorina ei ole tohtineet,
Siks’ vain loitolt’ on ihailleet.
Vaan jo pitkäksi käynyt on odotus,
Ei voi ruusuja unhottaa;
Siksi poikasill' onkin nyt aikomus
Nämä vienoiset omistaa.
EMÄNTÄ:
Sepä kovin hauska tarina. — Jos oikein arvaan, ukkoseni, lienee
poikain tarkoitus lopettaa tarinansa sitten, että sinä saat komean
puhemiespaidan. — Eikö niin?
TOINEN POIKA:
Eipä sinne päinkään, hyvä emäntä! Ne ruusut ovat liian lähellä
lähteäksemme niitä oppaan kera etsimään, niin lähellä ettemme oikein
tiedä miten lähellä lienevätkään. Nähkääs: (laulavat):
Laulu n:o 5. sävel n:o 5.
(Yhdessä):
Ne ruusut täällä kasvavat
Tään sinisalon laidassa,
Yks’ isän silmäteränä,
Yks’ äidin helmenä.
Siis kuule kulta emäntä
Ja sinä oiva isäntä:
Me ruusuja nyt pyydämme,
Niit’ ette kieltäne?
(Ensim. poika):
Mä ruusun pyydän punaisen
(Toinen poika):
Ja minä hennon valkoisen,
(Yhdessä):
Ne rinnan täällä kukoisti,
Ois rinnan vastaki.
(Yhdessä):
On maja meidän matala,
Vain torppa metsän takana,
Mutt’ ahkeruus siell’ asustaa
Ja onnen rakentaa.
EMÄNTÄ:
Jopa nyt kummia kuulen! Ettäkö nämä meidän salovuokot olisi poikasten
mielessä. Leikkiä laskette. Ei salo ruusuja kasva eikä näy metsävuokko
loitolle, sammaleesen se piiloutuu. Mihin meidän tytöistä; ei muotoa,
ei muutakaan: lyhyen ovat lylleröiset, tuhmat salontytöt tuiretuiset,
jotka eivät osaa muuta kuin karjaa metsältä huhuilla, kotipolkuja
sipsutella. Ei, talo vaatii oikean naisen. Punaisemmasta talosta noin
uljaat pojat omansa ottavat. Niinkuin jo sanoin: ei kasva ruusuja
salohongikon keskessä.
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Missäpä sitte! Täällä ne ovat meidän ruusut, kuin maalla mesimarja,
punapuola kankahalla. — Vaan turha lienee toivomme; ei usko äiti
valkoisia valvattiaan halvan pirttimme iloksi.
EMÄNTÄ:
Sitä en suinkaan tarkoittanut. Jos kelvannevat, ei mulla vastaan.
ISÄNTÄ:
Sama mieli minulla.
EMÄNTÄ:
Vaan kovin ovat vielä nuoria tyttösemme, nuoria ja lapsellisia.
TOINEN POIKA:
Nuoria olemme itsekin.
EMÄNTÄ:
Niinpä niin. Vaan taisittepa alkaa väärästä päästä.
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Kuinka niin?
EMÄNTÄ:
Ettekö ole kuulleet mitä vanhat sanoivat tämmöisessä tapauksessa?
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Emme, emme edes aavista.
EMÄNTÄ:
Pitääpä sitte kertoa. Näin ne sanoivat: (laulaa):
Laulu n:o 6, sävel n:o 6, 7 ja 8.
Sävel n:o 6.
Ellös neittä annettako
Vasten mieltä miehelähän,
On kuin orjaks’ ostettaisi,
Rahan ala raatajaksi.

Vaan sun neittä valkeata:

Oma mieli kysyttävä,
Immen tuuma tutkittava.
ISÄNTÄ:
Totta puhuu äiti. Ja jos minäkin saan sanoa sanasen, niin virkanpa
muutaman vanhankansan katkelman. (Laulaa):

Sävel n:o 6.
Sanoi vanha Väinämöinen,
Epäsi Suvannon sulho:
Neidon kättä kärttämästä
Isän luvalla lujalla,
Maamon hyvän mairehilla.
Suruiksi se vaan sukevi.
Ehdon valta ahvenella
Oma valta neitosella.
(Yhdessä): Sävel n:o 7.
Oma mieli kysyttävä,
Immen tuuma tutkittava;
Oma vaali valkeampi,
Oma lupa luontevampi.
(Ulkoa kuuluu laulua).
EMÄNTÄ:
Mitä kuulen? Kas, sieltäpä he tulevat.
TYTÖT (tulevat laulaen käsikkäin):

Mieltäni mun miekkosen
Ei murhepilvet paina,
Täytin vuotta kuusitoista
Viime helluntaina.
EMÄNTÄ (nauraen):
Tuommoisia hupakoita!
ENSIMÄINEN TYTTÖ:
Te täällä? Päivää! Mitäs salon taakse kuuluu?
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Kunpa tietäisi mitä sitä oikeastaan kuuluukaan. Käet kukkuvat niin
kummia tänä vuonna.
ENSIMÄINEN TYTTÖ:
Kummia kukkuvat? Mitä sitte?
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Häitä kuuluvat kukkuvan.
ENSIMÄINEN TYTTÖ:
Häitä, joissa te varmaan olette sulhoina, ahaa! Nepä hyvänsään lintuja!
Pääsemmekö me morsiustytöiksi, vai?
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Enpä takaa. Pahoin pelkään ettette pääse.
ENSIMÄINEN TYTTÖ:
Katsoppas vaan! Ovatpa ne käet kovin ylhäisiksi teidät kukkuneet. Emme
välitä paljo semmoisen käen kukunnoista.
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Elkäähän toki! Vielä kummempia ne ovat kukkuneet. Kuulkaas, näin se
kukkui eräskin:
— Kukkuu, kukkuu.
— Mitä kukkuu?
— Häitä, häitä.
— Kenen häitä?
— Salon poikain, salon poikain.
— Keiden kanssa?
- Salon tyttöin, salon tyttöin.
— Älä narraa!
— Narri itse, narri itse.
Näin ne käet kukkuvat. Vaan mitäpä yksin käen kukunnoista. Tiedättehän
tytöt, että salon pojat teistä pitävät, teitä rakastavat. He teitä
omikseen odottavat kuin odottaa maamies hyvää viljavuotta, lapset
mansikkasuvea, taikka nuoruus kevään tuloa, elämä henkeänsä.
ENSIMÄINEN TYTTÖ:
Meitä pilkkaamaanko olette tulleet?

ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Kuinka voitte tuommoista ajatellakaan! Kauvan, kauvan on salonpoikain
silmä tänne tähdännyt, sydän täällä asunut. Vaan he eivät ole
uskaltaneet, he ovat vaan loitolta katselleet kuin kukkaa vinhan virran
tuolla puolen. Vaan nyt he vihdoinkin ovat käen neuvon mieleensä
panneet ja tulleet varmuutta saamaan. (Laulavat):

ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Jo nyt laskette leikkiä. Ette ole kuulleet kaikkea, mitä käki on
kukkunut.
ENSIMÄINEN TYTTÖ:
Ne teidän käet, hahhaa! No mitä ne vielä ovat olleet kukkuvinaan?
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Näin ne kukkuvat:
— Yksin yksin
— Mitä yksin?
— Yksin neito kotonansa, kuni kulopetäjä palolla.
— Kaksin kaksin.
— Mitä kaksin?
— Kaksin kaunis olla, kaksin lintusten metsässä.
ENSIMÄINEN TYTTÖ:
Äläppäs! Olen minäkin käkiä kuullut ja niitä on tavallisesti kaksi ja
se toinen aina lisää jotakin jatkoksi. Kuules, näin ne kukkuvat:
— Ensimäinen käki: kaksin kaksin kaunis olla
— Toinen käki: Kun saa toistaan höyhennellä.
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Joutavia! — Kaksin huuletkin kaunihimmat.
ENSIMÄINEN TYTTÖ:
Kun ovat eri paria.
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Kaksin silmätkin somemmat.
ENSIMÄINEN TYTTÖ:
Päässä kierosilmäisen.
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Kaksin aidanseipähätkin.
ENSIMÄINEN TYTTÖ:
Kumpikin omaan puoleensa punnistavi, sidevitsat katkaisevi.
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Kutti, jo puhuit itsesi pussiin! Jos niin olisi, eipä sitte aidat
pystyssä pysyisi ja kun kaatuisi, niin kaatuisi kahtaanne päin. Vaan
kuuleppas sinä sanasutkija: sinunpa kanssasi minä haluaisin tulla
saman sidevitsan liittämäksi. Usko pois, en minä aivan pahoin puoleeni
punnistaisi.
ENSIMÄINEN TYTTÖ:
Vai et punnistaisi! Kyllä teidät tunnetaan: mesi kielellä kosijan.
Haluatko kuulla mitä tämä tyttö ajattelee? Näin (laulaa):

ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Kuulin kyllä, vaan sanotaan että lintu joskus laulaa kielensä
kerkeyttä, ei aina sydämensä syvyyttä.
TOINEN POIKA:
Ja mitä sanoo minun tyttöni?
TOINEN TYTTÖ:
Mitäpä minä sanoisin! Minähän olen niin nuori, tämmöinen tyttö hupakko.
(Laulaa):

Oon kuin kasvava kataja
Tahi tuore tuomen latva;

Isä kutsuu kuutamoksi,
Äiti päivän paisteheksi.

Siltä kuulostaa.
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Vaan minkäs sille; jätetään sikseen se asia. — Äiti käski kertomaan
teille paljo terveisiä ja sanomaan ettei tie salotorppaan käy minkään
ylipääsemättömän vuoren poikki.
ENSIMÄINEN TYTTÖ:
Kiitoksia, kiitoksia! Mitenkä jaksaa äitivanhuksenne? Emme ole moniin
aikoihin hänestä mitään kuulleet. Olen aivan utelias.
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
Kiitos kysymästä. Eipä niistä äidin jaksamisista kehuen ole, niin on
vointi kuin sammuva illanrusko tahi kuloheinän kuiva latva. Yksin on
äitiparka, aivan liiaks askaretta vanhuksella.
ENSIMÄINEN TYTTÖ:
Sen arvaa sanomatta. Meidän talossa on kolme naista, eikä kukaan
joutilaaksi jouda. Voi kuinka minun tekisi mieleni auttaa äitiänne.
Teidän äitinnehän on niin hyvä, aivan kuin meidän oma äitimme.
TOINEN TYTTÖ:
Samoin minä niin kovin mielelläni auttaisin. Kantaisin vettä tahi puita
juoksuttaisin, ellen muuhun kykenisi.
POJAT:
Oikeinko totta?
TYTÖT:
Tietysti.
ENSIMÄINEN TYTTÖ:
Kuinka voitte epäilläkään?
ENSIMÄINEN POIKA:
