Vilhelmo (apud skribtablo kun libroj komercaj kaj paperoj). En tiu
ĉi semajno ree du novaj klientoj. Se oni sin movas, ĉiam io estas; se
estus eĉ nur malmulto, je l’ fino tamen ĝi donas sumon, kaj kiu ludas
ludon malgrandan, ĉiam ĝojas, ankaŭ je l’ malgranda gajno, kaj la
malgranda perdo ne tiel multe doloras. Kio estas?
Leteristo (venas). Letero mona, dudek dukatoj, franko duone.
Vilhelmo. Bone! tre bone! Notu ĝin al la cetero. (Leteristo eliras).
Vilhelmo (rigardante la leteron). Mi ne volis hodiaŭ tutan la tagon
diri al mi, ke mi ilin atendis. Nun mi povas jam pagi Fabricion, kaj
ne uzos tro multe lian bonecon. Hieraŭ li al mi diris: „Morgaŭ mi
venos al vi!“ Tio ne estis oportuna por mi. Mi sciis, ke li min ne
memorigus la ŝuldon, kaj tial lia estanteco ĉe mi rekte min memorigas
duoble. (Malfermante la skatolon kaj kalkulante la monon), Je l’ tempoj
pasintaj, kiam mi iel pli malbone mastris, mi suferis la silentajn
kreditantojn la plej malmulte. Kontraŭ tiu, kiu ĉiuminute alkuras
kaj atakas, -- kontraŭ tia almenaŭ malmodesteco kaj ĉio cetera estas
konvenaj; la alia, kiu silentas, iras rekte al la koro kaj postulas la
plej premante, ĉar li lasas sian aferon al mi. (Li kunmetas monon sur
la tablo). Dio amata, kiel mi dankas vin, ke mi foriĝis el la afero kaj
estas ree trankvila! (Li levas libron). Vian benadon en malgranda! al
mi, kiu disĵetegis Viajn donojn en grando. -- Kaj tiel -- Ĉu mi povas
ĝin esprimi? -- -- Sed Vi faras nenion por mi, kiel mi mem nenion por
mi faras. Se la kara, aminda kreaĵo ne estus, ĉu mi sidus tie ĉi kaj
kalkulus per nombronoj? -- Ho Marianno! se vi scius, ke tiu, kiun vi
prenas por via frato, ke tiu kun tute alia koro, kun tute aliaj esperoj
por vi laboras! -- Eble! -- Ha! -- Estas ja maldolĉe -- -- Ŝi amas min
-- jes, kiel fraton -- Ne, fi! ĝi estas senkredeco, kaj tiu ĉi neniam
ion bonan fondis. -- Marianno! mi estos feliĉa, vi ĝin estos ankaŭ,
Marianno!
Marianno (venas). Kion vi volas, frato? Vi min vokis?
Vilhelmo. Mi ne, Marianno.
Marianno. Ĉu vin pikas la ŝercemo, ke vi min elvokas el la kuirejo?
Vilhelmo. Vi vidas spiritojn.
Marianno. Eble iam. Sed vian voĉon mi konas tro bone, Vilhelmo!
Vilhelmo. Nu, kion vi faras tie?
Marianno. Mi senplumigis kelkajn kolombojn, ĉar certe Fabricio
vespermanĝos hodiaŭ kun ni.
Vilhelmo. Kredeble.
Marianno. Ili baldaŭ estos pretaj, vi poste nur bezonas diri. Li
devas min ankaŭ instrui sian novan kanteton.
Vilhelmo. Vi plezure lernas ion de li?
Marianno. Kantetojn li scias tre belajn. Kaj poste, kiam vi sidas
apud la tablo, kaj mallevas la kapon, tiam mi tuj komencas. Ĉar mi ja
scias, ke vi ridas, se mi komencas kanteton, kiu estas al vi agrabla.
Vilhelmo. Ĉu vi ĝin rimarkis ĉe mi?
Marianno. Jes, kiu ion ne rimarkus ĉe vi viroj! Se vi ne havas ion
alian, mi reiros, ĉar mi havas ankoraŭ ne unu laboron. Adiaŭ. -- Nun
donu al mi ankoraŭ kison.
Vilhelmo. Se la kolomboj estos bone rostitaj, vi ricevos ĝin kiel
postmanĝon.
Marianno. Estas malbene, ke la fratoj estas tiel malĝentilaj! Se
Fabricio aŭ ia alia bona knabo povus preni kison, ili saltus de ĝojo
ĝis la plafono, kaj tiu ĉi sinjoro malestimas la kison kiun mi volas
doni. Nun mi bruligos la kolombojn. (Eliras).
Vilhelmo. Anĝelo! Amata anĝelo! Ĉu estas eble, ke mi min tenas, ke
mi ne ĵetas min al ŝia kolo, ke mi ne malkovras ĉion al ŝi. Ĉu vi
rigardas nin, sankta virino, kiu donis al mi tiun ĉi multekostaĵon por
ke mi ĝin konservu? Jes, ili scias de ni, tie supre! ili scias de ni!
-- Karolino, mian amon al vi, vi ne povis rekompenci pli glore, pli
sankte, ol kiam forirante de l’ mondo vi konfidis al mi ĉion, kion mi
bezonis, vi alligis min al la vivo! Mi ŝin amis kiel vian infanon, --
kaj nun! Ankoraŭ ĝi estas por mi ŝajnevido. Ŝajnas al mi, ke mi vin
revidas, ke la sorto vin redonis al mi rejunigitan, ke nun mi povas
unuigita resti kaj loĝi kun vi, kiel en tiu unua sonĝo de l’ vivo mi
ne povis, ne devis! -- Feliĉa! Feliĉa! Tutan vian benon, patro en la
ĉielo!
Fabricio (venas). Bonan vesperon!
Vilhelmo. Amata Fabricio, mi estas tro feliĉa: venis ĉio bona sur
min tiun ĉi vesperon. Nun nenion pri aferoj komercaj! Tie kuŝas viaj
tricent taleroj! Kuraĝe en la poŝon! Mian reverson vi redonos al mi iam
poste. Kaj nun ni iom babiletu.
Fabricio. Se vi ilin bezonas pli longe --
Vilhelmo. Se mi ilin rebezonos, bone! Mi dankas vin, nur nun prenu
ilin al vi. -- Aŭskultu, la rememoro de Karolino tiun ĉi vesperon ree
fariĝis antaŭ mi senfine nova kaj viva.
Fabricio. Kredeble ĝi tion faras pli ofte.
Vilhelmo. Vi ŝin bedaŭrinde ne konis! Mi diras al vi, ŝi estis unu el
la plej glorindaj kreaĵoj.
Fabricio. Ŝi estis vidvino, kiam vi ŝin ekkonis?
Vilhelmo. Tiel pura kaj granda! Jen, hieraŭ ankoraŭ mi legis unu el
ŝiaj leteroj. Vi estas la sola homo, kiu iam ion el tio ĉi vidis. (Li
iras al la skatolo).
Fabricio (al si). Ke li min liberigu nur hodiaŭ je tio! Mi aŭdis la
historion jam tiel ofte! Mi aŭskultas lin alitempe ankaŭ kun plezuro,
ĉar li parolas ĉiam el la koro; nur hodiaŭ mi havas tute aliajn aferojn
en la kapo, kaj tial mi deziras, ke li restu en bona humoro.
Vilhelmo. Ĝi estis en la unuaj tagoj de nia ekkoniĝo: „La mondo
refariĝas por mi aminda“, ŝi skribas „mi tiel malligis min de ĝi, --
ree aminda per Vi. Mia koro mallaŭdas min; mi sentas, ke mi kaŭzas
turmentojn al Vi kaj al mi. Antaŭ duonjaro mi tiel estis preta por
morti, kaj nun mi jam ne estas“.
Fabricio. Bela animo.
Vilhelmo. La tero ne meritis ŝin. Fabricio, mi jam ofte rakontadis
al vi, kiel mi fariĝis tute alia homo per ŝi. Mi ne povas priskribi al
vi la dolorojn, kiam mi ekrigardis malantaŭen, kaj vidis mian patran
propraĵon malŝparitan de mi! Mi ne povis oferi al ŝi mian manon, ne
povis fari ŝian estadon pli porteblan. Mi eksentis je l’ unua fojo la
volon gajni al mi la necesan konvenan jetenon de l’ vivo, elrompi min
el la maldiligenteco, en kiu mi vivis ĉagrene unu tagon post alia. Mi
laboris -- sed kio ĝi estis? -- Mi estis pacienca kaj pasigis tiel
unu malfacilan jaron; fine sin montris al mi lumeto de l’ espero, mia
malmulto videble pligrandiĝadis -- kaj ŝi mortis. -- Mi ne povis resti.
Vi ne scietis, kiom mi suferis. Mi ne povis jam rigardi la ĉirkaŭaĵon,
kie mi vivis kun ŝi, kaj ne povis min apartigi de la tero, kie ŝi
ripozis. Ŝi skribis al mi mallonge antaŭ ŝia fino -- (Li prenas leteron
el la skatolo).
Fabricio. Estas belega letero, vi legis ĝin al mi antaŭ mallonge --
Aŭskultu, Vilhelmo.
Vilhelmo. Mi ĝin scias parkere kaj legas ĝin ĉiam. Se mi vidas ŝian
skribon, la folion, kie ripozis ŝia mano, mi ree pensas, ke ŝi ankoraŭ
tie estas -- Ŝi estas ankoraŭ tie! -- (Oni aŭdas infanon kriantan.)
Kiel Marianno ne povas ekripozi! Jen ŝi ree havas la knabon de nia
najbaro; kun li ŝi faras bruon ĉiutage kaj malhelpas min en maloportuna
tempo. (Apud la pordo). Marianno, estu mallaŭta kun la knabo aŭ sendu
lin for, se li estas malĝentila. Ni devas paroli. (Li staras pensiĝa).
Fabricio. Vi ne devas tiel ofte renovigadi tiujn ĉi rememorojn.
Vilhelmo. Estas tiuj ĉi skriblinioj! tiuj ĉi lastaj! La adiaŭ-dira
spireto de l’ apartiĝanta anĝelo. (Li refaldas la leteron). Vi estas
prava, ĝi estas malpiaĵo. Kiel malofte ni estas indaj por resenti la
pasintajn feliĉe-mizerajn momentojn de nia vivo!
Fabricio. Via sorto iras al mi ĉiam al la koro. Ŝi restigis filinon,
kiel vi rakontis al mi, kiu bedaŭrinde foriris baldaŭ post ŝia patrino.
Se ŝi estus restinta ĉe l’ vivo, al vi restus almenaŭ io de ŝi, vi
havus ion, al kio viaj zorgoj kaj doloroj sin povus alligi.
Vilhelmo. (Turnante sin vivece al li). Ŝia filino? Estis mirinde bela
floreto. Ŝi transdonis ĝin al mi -- Estas tro multe, kion la sorto
faris por mi! -- Fabricio, se mi povus diri al vi ĉion --
Fabricio. Se vi ĝin havas sur la koro.
Vilhelmo. Kial mi ne devus --
Marianno (venas kun la knabeto). Li volas ankoraŭ diri bonan nokton,
frato! Vi ne devas fari al li malluman vizaĝon, kaj al mi ankaŭ ne. Vi
ĉiam diradis, ke vi volus edziĝi kaj dezirus multajn infanojn. Oni ilin
ne povas ĉiam teni tiel per ŝnureto, ke ili nur kriu, kiam ĝi vin ne
malhelpas.
Vilhelmo. Se ili estas miaj infanoj.
Marianno. Tio ĉi povas esti efektive malsamo.
Fabricio. Vi tiel pensas, Marianno?
Marianno. Ĝi devas esti tro feliĉe! (Ŝi sidiĝas apud la knabo kaj
kisas lin). Mi tiel amas Kristoĉjon! Kaj se li estus mia! Li jam scias
silabi; li lernas ĉe mi.
Vilhelmo. Kaj vi pensas, la via scius jam legi?
Marianno. Jes! Ĉar tiam tutan la tagon mi okupus min per nenio alia,
nur mi lin vestadus kaj senvestigadus, kaj instruus, kaj donus al li
manĝi, lavus kaj cetere.
Fabricio. Kaj la edzo?
Marianno. Li ludus kune; li kredeble amus lin tiel kiel mi. Kristoĉjo
devas iri domon kaj diras adiaŭ. (Ŝi kondukas lin al Vilhelmo). Tie ĉi,
donu vian manon, efektivan manegeton!
Fabricio (al si). Ŝi estas tro aminda, mi devas peti ŝian manon.
Marianno. (Kondukante la infanon al Fabricio). Al tiu ĉi sinjoro
ankaŭ.
Vilhelmo (al si). Ŝi estos la via! Vi estos -- Estas tro multe, mi
ĝin ne meritas. -- (Laŭte). Marianno, forigu la infanon; malenuigu la
sinjoron Fabricion ĝis la vespermanĝo; mi volas nur trakuri kelkajn
stratojn supren, malsupren; mi sidis tutan la tagon. (Marianno eliras).
Vilhelmo. Sub la stela ĉielo nur unu liberan spiron! -- Mia koro
estas tiel plena. -- Mi tuj reestos tie ĉi! (Eliras).
Fabricio. Faru finon al la afero, Fabricio. Se vi ĝin portadas ĉiam
pli longe kaj pli longe, ĝi ja ne fariĝas pli matura. Vi decidis. Estas
bone, estas bonege! Vi helpos al ŝia frato, kaj ŝi -- ŝi min ne amas,
kiel mi amas ŝin. Sed ŝi ankaŭ ne scias ami forte. -- Amata knabino! --
Ŝi kredeble ne antaŭsentas en mi aliajn pensojn ol amikajn! Ni bone
fartos, Marianno! La okazo estas tute dezirita kaj kiel je l’ ordono!
Mi devas malkovri min al ŝi -- kaj se ŝia koro min ne malestimas -- je
l’ koro de la frato mi estas certa.
(Marianno venas).
Ĉu Vi forigis la knabeton?
Marianno. Mi lin dezire retenus; nur mi scias, ke tio ĉi ne plaĉas
al la frato, kaj mi ĝin ne faras. Iatempe la malgranda ŝtelisto mem
elpetas de li la permeson, por esti mia dorma kolego.
Fabricio. Ĉu li ne fariĝas malagrabla al Vi?
Marianno. Ne, tute ne. Li estas sovaĝa tutan la tagon, kaj kiam mi
venas al li en la liton, li estas bona kiel ŝafideto! Kateto plaĉema!
Kaj li karesas min, kiom li povas; iatempe mi lin tute ne povas dormigi.
Fabricio. (duone al si). La amata naturo!
Marianno. Li amas min ankaŭ pli ol sian patrinon.
Fabricio. Vi estas ankaŭ patrino por li. (Marianno staras en pensado.
Fabricio rigardas ŝin kelkan tempon). Ĉu la nomo patrino Vin faras
malĝoja?
Marianno. Ne malĝoja, sed mi nur pensas tiel.
Fabricio. Kion, dolĉa Marianno?
Marianno. Mi pensas ankaŭ nenion. Nur iatempe estas al mi tiel mire.
Fabricio. Ĉu Vi neniam havus la deziron? --
Marianno. Kiajn demandojn Vi faras!
Fabricio. Fabricio ja povos?
Marianno. La deziron -- neniam, Fabricio. Kaj se ankaŭ iatempe tia
penso trakuris tra mia kapo, ĝi estis baldaŭ for. Lasi mian fraton
estus al mi neelporteble, -- neeble, -- kiel ajn invitanta ĉia alia
estonteco eĉ povus esti.
Fabricio. Ĝi estas ja mire! Se Vi loĝus en unu urbo unu malproksime
de la alia, ĉu oni ĝin povus nomi forlasadon?
Marianno. Ho neniam! Kiu kondukus lian mastraĵon? Kiu zorgus por li?
-- Kun servantino? -- Ne, ĝi ne iros!
Fabricio. Ĉu li ne povus loĝi kun Vi? Ĉu Via edzo ne povus esti lia
amiko? Ĉu Vi tri ne povus konduki mastraĵon tiel same feliĉan, ankoraŭ
pli feliĉan? Ĉu Via frato ne povus esti pli faciligita per tio ĉi en
siaj malfacilaj aferoj? Kia vivo tio ĉi povus esti!
Marianno. Oni devus pensi. Se mi ĝin trapensas, ĝi estas vera. Kaj
poste reŝajnas al mi, ke ĝi ne estas ebla.
Fabricio. Mi Vin ne komprenas.
Marianno. Estas tiel. -- Se mi vekiĝas, mi aŭskultas, ĉu la frato
jam sin levis; se nenio sin movas, tuj mi elsaltas el la lito en la
kuirejon, ekbruligas la fajron, ke la akvo bolas super la randon, ĝis
la servantino sin levas, kaj li havas la kafon, kiam li malfermas la
okulojn.
Fabricio. Doma patrineto!
Marianno. Kaj poste mi sidiĝas kaj faras ŝtrumpojn por mia frato kaj
havas penon kaj almezuras ilin al li dek fojojn, ĉu ili estas sufiĉe
longaj, ĉu ili bone kuŝas, ĉu la piedo ne estas tro mallonga, -- ke li
ofte fariĝas malpacienca. Mi ankaŭ ne faras tion ĉi pro la mezurado,
mi nur deziras, ke mi havu ion por fari apud li, ke li min rigardu
unu fojon, kiam li jam skribadis kelkajn horojn, kaj ke li ne fariĝu
hipoĥondriulo. Ĉar ĝi faras bone al li, kiam li min rigardas; mi vidas
ĝin el liaj okuloj, kvankam li ne volas, ke mi ĝin vidu. Mi iatempe
ridas sekrete, ke li faras, kiel se li estus serioza aŭ kolera. Li bone
faras; mi lin turmentis ja tutan la tagon.
Fabricio. Li estas feliĉa.
Marianno. Ne, mi ĝin estas. Se mi lin ne havus, mi ne scius, kion
komenci en la mondo. Mi ĉion ja faras ankaŭ por mi, kaj al mi ŝajnas,
kiel se mi farus ĉion por li, ĉar ankaŭ ĉe tio, kion mi faras por mi
mem, mi ĉiam pensas je li.
Fabricio. Kaj se Vi tiel farus ĉion por la edzo, kiel tute feliĉa li
estus! Kiel danka li estus, kaj kia doma vivado tio ĉi estus!
Marianno. Iatempe mi ankaŭ prezentas tion ĉi al mi kaj rakontas al mi
longan mirrakonton, kiam mi tiel sidas kaj faras ŝtrumpeton aŭ kudras,
kiel ĉio povus iri. Se mi poste revenas al la veraĵo, mi vidas ke tio
neniam povas fariĝi.
Fabricio. Kial?
Marianno. Kie mi trovos edzon, kiu estus kontenta, se mi al li dirus:
„Mi Vin volas ami“, kaj se mi devus tuj almeti: „pli ol mian fraton mi
Vin ne povas ami, por tiu ĉi mi devas fari ĉion kiel ĝis nun“ -- -- --
Ha, Vi vidas, ke ĝi ne estas ebla.
Fabricio. Vi farus poste unu parton por la edzo, Vi transportus la
amon sur lin --
Marianno. Tie estas la ligaĵo! Jes, se oni povus pagi la amon tien
kaj ien kiel la monon, aŭ se la amo ŝanĝadus sian sinjoron ĉiun
kvaronon de l’ jaro kiel malbona servantino. Ĉe l’ edzo ĉio devus poste
fariĝi, kio tie ĉi jam estas, kio neniam tie povas fariĝi.
Fabricio. Fariĝas multo.
Marianno. Mi ne scias. Se li sidas apud la tablo kaj metas la
kapon sur la manon, rigardas malsupren kaj estas silenta en zorgoj
-- mi povas duonhorojn sidi kaj lin rigardi. Li ne estas bela, mi
diras iatempe al mi mem, tamen al mi estas tiel agrable, kiam mi lin
rigardas. -- Nature mi bone sentas, ke ĝi estas ankaŭ por mi, se li
zorgas; nature la unua rigardo ĝin al mi diras, kiam li ree supren
ekrigardas, kaj tio ĉi faras multon.
Fabricio. Ĉion, Marianno. Kaj edzo, kiu zorgus por Vi! --
Marianno. Estas ankoraŭ unu objekto: viaj kapricoj. Vilhelmo havas
ankaŭ siajn kapricojn; de li ili min ne premas, de ĉiu alia ili estus
por mi ne elporteblaj. Li havas mallaŭtajn kapricojn, mi tamen ilin
sentas iatempe. Se en malbonaj momentoj li forpuŝas bonan, kunsentan,
amplenan sentaĵon -- tio ĉi min doloras! kompreneble nur unu momenton;
kaj se mi ankaŭ murmuras je li, ĝi estas pli por tio, ke li ne rekonas
mian amon, ol ke mi lin malpli amus.
Fabricio. Se tamen iu sin trovus, kiu malgraŭ ĉio volus havi la
kuraĝon por oferi al Vi sian manon?
Marianno. Li sin ne trovos! Kaj poste estus la demando, ĉu mi devus
riski kun li.
Fabricio. Kial ne?
Marianno. Li sin ne trovos!
Fabricio. Marianno, Vi lin havas!
Marianno. Fabricio!
Fabricio. Vi lin vidas antaŭ Vi! Ĉu mi devas komenci longan paroladon?
Ĉu mi devas elŝuti antaŭ Vi, kion mia koro tiel longe kaŝas? Mi Vin
amas, Vi ĝin longe scias; mi oferas al Vi mian manon, tion ĉi Vi ne
antaŭpensis. Mi neniam vidis knabinon, kiu tiel malmulte pensis kiel
Vi, ke ŝi elvokas sentojn en tiu ĉi, kiu ŝin vidas. -- Marianno, ne
fajreca nepripensanta amanto parolas kun Vi; mi Vin konas, mia domo
estas pretigita; ĉu Vi volas esti la mia? -- -- -- En la amo mi havis
malsamajn sortojn, mi estis pli ol unu fojon decidita -- fini mian
vivon en fraŭleco. Vi nun havas min. -- Ne malkonsentu! Vi min konas;
mi estas unupensa kun Via frato! Vi ne povas pensi je pli pura ligiĝo.
-- Malfermu Vian koron! -- Unu vorton, Marianno!
Marianno. Amata Fabricio, lasu al mi tempon, mi estas amika al Vi.
Fabricio. Diru, ke Vi min amas! Mi lasas al Via frato lian placon: mi
volas esti la frato de Via frato, unuigitaj ni volas zorgi por li. Mia
propraĵo, alkalkulita al la lia, liberigos lin de ne unu horo ĉagrena;
li reprenos kuraĝon, li -- Marianno, mi ne volus Vin emigi per miaj
vortoj. (Li kaptas ŝian manon).
Marianno. Fabricio, mi neniam ekpensis pri tio -- En kian
senkonsilecon Vi min metas! --
Fabricio. Nur unu vorton! Ĉu mi povas esperi?
Marianno. Parolu kun mia frato!
Fabricio (sur la genuoj). Anĝelo! La plej amata!
Marianno (silentas momenton). Dio! kion mi diris! (Eliras).
Fabricio. Ŝi estas la via! -- -- -- Al la aminda malsaĝulineto mi ja
povas permesi la karesadon kun la frato; tio ĉi iom post iom returniĝos,
kiam ni konos nin pli proksime, kaj li ne devas ion perdi pro tio!
Estas tre agrable al mi, ree tiel ami kaj okaze ree tiel esti amata!

hipoĥondriulo kun siaj eternaj rememoroj, timoj, zorgoj pri la ĉiutaga
pano, kaj sekretoj. Ĉio estos belege! Li devas pli libere spiri la
aeron; la knabino devas havi edzon -- kio ne estas malmulto, kaj vi

(Vilhelmo eniras).
Ĉu via promenado estas finita?
Vilhelmo. Mi iris sur la urban placon, kaj supren sur la straton
pastrejan kaj reen apud la borso. Estas por mi mira sentaĵo, se mi
iras nokte tra l’ urbo. Kiel de la taga laboro ĉio parte ripozas,
parte rapidas al ripozo, kaj oni nur vidas en movado la laboremon de
l’ malgranda industrio! Mi ĝojis je unu maljuna fromaĝistino, kiu, kun
okulvitro sur la nazo, apud resteto de l’ kandelo, detranĉadis peceton
post peceto, ĝis la aĉetantino havis sian pezon.
Fabricio. Ĉiu rimarkas laŭ sia speco. Mi kredas, multaj transiris la
straton, ne rigardante la vendistinon de fromaĝo kaj ŝiajn okulvitrojn.
Vilhelmo. Je kio oni sin okupas, tion oni amas, kaj la gajnado en
malgranda estas por mi estiminda, de la tempo kiam mi scias, kiel acida
fariĝas la talero, se oni ĝin devas meriti groŝon post groŝo. (Staras
kelkajn momentojn en pensado.) Al mi fariĝis tute mirinde sur la vojo.
Tiel multaj aferoj je unu fojo kaj intermiksitaj venis al mi en la
kapon, -- kaj tio, kio min okupas en la plejprofundaĵo de mia animo --
(Li fariĝas pensiĝa.)
Fabricio (al si). Estas malsaĝa afero; kiam li estas apuda, mi ne
havas la kuraĝon, konfesi rekte, ke mi amas Mariannon. -- Mi ja devas
rakonti al li, kio pasis. -- (Laŭte) Vilhelmo! diru al mi! vi volis
ŝanĝi vian loĝejon? Vi havas malmultajn ĉambrojn kaj pagas multe. Ĉu vi
ne scias alian loĝejon?
Vilhelmo (distrite). Ne.
Fabricio. Mi pensas, ni du povus plifaciligi unu al la dua. Jen,
mi havas mian patran domon kaj loĝas nur la supran etaĝon, kaj la
malsupran vi povus preni; vi ne edziĝos ja tiel baldaŭ. -- Vi havos
la korton kaj malgrandan magazenon por via spedicio; vi donos al mi
malgrandan loĝpagon, kaj ni helpos unu al la alia.
Vilhelmo. Vi estas tre bona. Mi vere ankaŭ iatempe tion ekpensis,
kiam mi venis al vi kaj vidis tiel grandan parton de l’ domo malplenan,
dum mi devas min helpi tiel zorgeme. -- Poste estas aliaj aferoj -- --
-- Oni devas ĝin lasi, ĉar ĝi estas neebla.
Fabricio. Kial ne?
Vilhelmo. Se mi edziĝus?
Fabricio. Por tio estus konsilo. Kiel fraŭlo vi havus sufiĉan placon
kun via fratino, kaj kun edzino ĝi iros ankaŭ.
Vilhelmo (ridetante). Kaj mia fratino?
Fabricio. Tiun ĉi mi prenus al mi. (Vilhelmo silentas). Kaj ankaŭ
malgraŭ tio. Parolu ni prudentan vorton. -- Mi amas Mariannon; donu ŝin
al mi kiel edzinon!
Vilhelmo. Kio?
Fabricio. Kial ne? Donu vian vorton! Aŭskultu min, frato! Mi amas
Mariannon! Mi longe pripensadis: nur ŝi, nur vi, vi du povas min fari
tiel feliĉa, kiel mi povas ankoraŭ esti sur la mondo. Donu ŝin al mi!
Vilhelmo (konfuze). Vi ne scias, kion vi volas.
Fabricio. Ha, kiel bone mi scias! Ĉu mi ĉion devas rakonti al vi,
kion mi bezonas, kaj kion mi havos, se ŝi fariĝos mia edzino kaj vi mia
bofrato?
Vilhelmo (revenante el la pensado kaj rapide). Neniam! neniam!
Fabricio. Kion vi havas? -- Tio ĉi min doloras -- La abomenon! -- Se
vi devas havi bofraton, kio fariĝos ja frue aŭ pli malfrue, kial ne
min? kiun vi tiel bone konas, kiun vi amas! Almenaŭ mi kredis --
Vilhelmo. Lasu min! -- -- Mi ne havas prudenton.
Fabricio. Mi devas diri ĉion. De vi sola dependas mia sorto. Ŝia
koro estas favora al mi, tion vi kredeble rimarkis. Vin ŝi amas pli,
ol ŝi min amas! Mi estas kontenta. La edzon ŝi amos pli ol la fraton!
Mi eniros en viajn privilegiojn, vi en la miajn, kaj ni ĉiuj estos
ĝojaj. Mi ankoraŭ neniam vidis ligaĵon kiu ligus sin tiel home kaj
bone. (Vilhelmo silenta). Kaj kio firmigas ĉion -- Plej bona, donu nur
vian vorton, vian konsenton! Diru al ŝi, ke vi ĝojas je tio, ke ĝi vin
faros feliĉa -- Mi havas ŝian vorton.
Vilhelmo. Ŝian vorton?
Fabricio. Ŝi ĵetis ĝin, kiel ankaŭ adiaŭdirantan rigardon, kiu diris
pli, ol la restado povus diri. Ŝia senkonsileco kaj ŝia amo, ŝia volado
kaj tremado estis tiel belaj.
Vilhelmo. Ne, Ne!
Fabricio. Mi vin ne komprenas. Mi sentas, ke vi ne havas abomenon
kontraŭ mi, kaj vi estas al mi tiel kontraŭa? Ne estu! Ne estu malhelpa
al ŝia feliĉo! -- Kaj mi pensas ĉiam, vi devas esti feliĉa kun ni!
-- Ne malkonsentu vian vorton al miaj deziroj! vian vorton amikan.
(Vilhelmo silenta en batalantaj turmentoj). Mi vin ne komprenas --
Vilhelmo. Ŝin? Vi volas havi ŝin?

Vilhelmo. Kaj ŝi vin?

Vilhelmo. Kion diri! -- Tio ĉi estis, kiu kuŝis sur mia animo tiun
ĉi vesperon kiel nubo fulmotondra. Ĝi ekbrilas, ĝi ekbatas -- -- Prenu
ŝin! Mian solan -- mian ĉion! (Fabricio lin rigardas senparola). Prenu
ŝin! -- Kaj ke vi sciu, kion vi al mi prenas -- (Paŭzo. Li komencas
rapide). Mi rakontis al vi pri Karolino, la anĝelo, kiu forkuris el
miaj manoj kaj restigis al mi sian similaĵon, la filinon -- -- kaj tiu
ĉi filino -- mi diris al vi malveron -- ŝi ne estas morta; tiu ĉi
filino estas Marianno! -- Marianno ne estas mia fratino!
Fabricio. Por tio mi ne estis preparita.
Vilhelmo. Kaj de vi mi devis ĝin timi! -- Kial mi ne obeis mian koron
kaj ne fermis mian domon al vi, kiel al ĉiu en la unuaj tagoj, kiam mi
tien ĉi venis? Al vi sola mi permesis eniron en la sanktejon, kaj vi
sciis dormigi min per boneco, amikeco, helpado, ŝajna malvarmeco por
la virinoj. Kiel mi laŭ ŝajno estis ŝia frato, vian senton por ŝi mi
prenis kiel veran fratecan; kaj se ankaŭ iatempe volis veni al mi ia
malkredemo, mi ĵetadis ĝin for kiel nenoblan, alskribis ŝian bonecon
por vi al la anĝeleco de ŝia koro, kiu rigardas tutan la mondon per
amplena okulo. -- Kaj vi! -- Kaj ŝi!
Fabricio. Mi ne deziras aŭskulti pli de tio, kaj por diri mi ankaŭ
nenion havas. Tial adiaŭ. (Eliras).
Vilhelmo. Iru! -- Vi elportas kun vi ĉion, mian tutan feliĉecon.
Estas fortranĉitaj, forrompitaj ĉiuj esperoj -- la plej proksimaj --
per unu fojo -- super la senfundaĵo! estas rompita kaj falegis la magia
ponto, kiu devis min transkonduki en la feliĉecon de ĉieloj -- For!
kaj per li, la malfidela trompinto! kiu tiel trouzis la sincerecon, la
kredemon! -- -- Ho Vilhelmo, Vilhelmo! vi estas jam tiel malproksime,
ke vi devas esti maljusta kontraŭ la bona homo? -- Kion li krimis? --
-- -- Vi kuŝas pezege sur ni kaj estas justa, sorto rekompencanta! Kial
vi tie ĉi staras? Kaj vi? Rekte en la momento! -- Pardonu al mi! Ĉu mi
ne suferis pro tio? -- Pardonu! estas jam longe! -- Mi suferis senfine.
Mi ŝajne amis vin, mi kredis, ke mi vin amis; per nepripensitaj
plaĉemoj mi malfermis vian koron, kaj, faris vin mizerajn! Pardonu
kaj lasu min! -- Ĉu mi devas tiel esti punita? -- Ĉu mi devas perdi
Mariannon, la lastan de miaj esperoj, la enhavaĵon de miaj zorgoj? --
Ne povas esti! ĝi ne povas esti! (Li staras silenta).
Marianno (proksimiĝas malkuraĝe). Frato!
Vilhelmo. Ha!
Marianno. Frato amata, vi devas pardoni al mi, mi vin petas pro ĉio.
Vi estas kolera, mi ĝin pensis. Mi faris malprudenton -- al mi estas
tute mirinde.
Vilhelmo (penante esti trankvila). Kion vi havas, knabino?
Marianno. Mi volis, ke mi ĝin povu al vi rakonti. -- Ĝi iradas tre
senorde tra mia kapo. -- Fabricio volas min kiel edzino, kaj mi --
Vilhelmo (duone maldolĉe). Eldiru, vi konsentas?
Marianno. Ne, ne pro la vivo! Neniam mi lin edziniĝos; mi lin ne
povas edziniĝi.
Vilhelmo. Kiel alie tio ĉi sonas!
Marianno. Sufiĉe mirinde. Vi estas tro malbona, frato; mi irus dezire
kaj atendus ankoraŭ unu horon, se mi ĝin ne devus tuj forigi de l’
koro: Unu fojon por ĉiam: Mi ne povas edziniĝi Fabricion.
Vilhelmo. (sin levas kaj prenas ŝian manon) Kiel, Marianno?
Marianno. Li estis tie ĉi kaj paroladis kaj prezentadis al mi tiom
multe, ke mi ekpensis, ĝi estus eble. Li tiel premadis, ke en la
senpripenseco mi diris, ke li parolu kun vi -- Li prenis ĝin kiel
konsenton, kaj en la sama momento mi eksentis, ke ĝi ne povas fariĝi.
Vilhelmo. Li parolis kun mi.
Marianno. Mi vin petas, kiom mi povas kaj scias, pro la tuta amo,
kiun mi havas por vi, pro la amo, per kiu vi min amas, refaru ĝin bone,
diru al li!
Vilhelmo (al si). Eterna Dio!
Marianno. Ne koleru! Li ankaŭ ne devas koleri. Ni vivos kiel antaŭe
kaj ĉiam tiel. -- Ĉar nur kun vi mi povas vivi, kun vi sola mi volas
vivi. Tio ĉi kuŝas de longe en mia animo kaj estas nun elpuŝita,
elpuŝita per fortego -- Mi amas nur vin!
Vilhelmo. Marianno!
Marianno. Plej bona frato! Tiun ĉi kvaronhoron, -- mi ne scias diri
al vi kia kurado estis en mia koro. -- Estas al mi kiel antaŭ mallonge,
kiam ĝi brulis sur la bazaro kaj en la komenco la fumo kaj vaporo ĉion
kovris, ĝis per unu fojo la fajro levis la tegmenton kaj la tuta domo
ekstaris en brulo. -- Ne forlasu min! Ne elpelu min de vi, frato!
Vilhelmo. Ĝi ne povas resti tiel por ĉiam.
Marianno. Tio ĉi timigas min tiel multe! -- Mi volas plezure promesi
al vi, ke mi ne edziniĝos, mi volas ĉiam zorgi por vi, ĉiam, ĉiam,
senhalte. -- Jen, tie kontraŭe loĝas kune tiaj du maljunaj gefratoj; mi
pensas iatempe ŝerce: Kvankam vi estus tiel maljunaj kaj elsekigitaj,
se vi nur estos kune!
Vilhelmo. (Tenante sian koron, duone al si). Se vi ĝin eltenos, vi
neniam estos tro mallarĝa!
Marianno. Vi kredeble pensas alie; vi kredeble prenos edzinon kun la
tempo kaj tio ĉi min dolorus, se mi eĉ volus ami ŝin la plej multe. --
Nenio amas vin tiel kiel mi, nenio povas vin ami tiel multe. (Vilhelmo
provas paroli). Vi estas ĉiam tiel reteniĝa, kaj mi ĝin ĉiam havas
en la buŝo por diri al vi tute, kiel ĝi al mi estas, kaj mi ne povas.
Dank’ al Dio, ke la okazo malligas al mi la langon!
Vilhelmo. Nenion pli, Marianno!
Marianno. Vi min ne devas malhelpi, permesu, ke mi diru ĉion! Poste
mi iros en la kuirejon kaj sidos tutajn tagojn ĉe mia laboro, nur
iatempe mi vin rigardos, kiel se mi volus diri: Vi ĝin scias. (Vilhelmo
staras senparola kaj feliĉa). Vi povis ĝin scii jam longe, vi ankaŭ
ĝin scias, de la morto de nia patrino, kiam mi elkreskadis el mia
infaneco kaj estis ĉiam kun vi. -- Rigardu, mi sentas pli da plezuro
esti apud vi, ol da dankemo por via pli ol frata zorgado. Kaj iom post
iom vi prenis tutan mian koron, tutan mian kapon, ke nun io alia nur
kun penego povas gajni lokon en ili. Mi ankoraŭ scias, ke vi iatempe
ridis, kiam mi legis romanojn: tio ĉi estis unu fojon kun la Julino
Mandeville, kaj mi demandis, ĉu Henriko, aŭ kiel li nomiĝis, ne estis
simila al vi? -- Vi ridis -- kio ne plaĉis al mi. Tial mi silentis
alian fojon. Mi tamen prenis ĝin tute serioze; ĉar kiuj estis la plej
amindaj, la plej bonaj homoj, ili ĉiuj estis similaj al vi. -- Mi vin
vidis promenantan en grandaj ĝardenoj, ĉevalirantan, vojirantan kaj
duelantan -- (Ŝi ridas por si).
Vilhelmo. Kio estas al vi?
Marianno. Ke mi ĝin ankaŭ konfesu: se ia fraŭlino estis tre bela kaj
tre amata -- kaj tre enamiĝa -- ŝi estis ĉiam mi mem. -- Nur je l’
fino, se la afero venis al la disligo kaj ili post ĉiuj malhelpadoj
ankoraŭ edziĝis -- -- Mi estas ja tre sincera, bona, babilema estaĵo.
Vilhelmo. Daŭrigu! (Forturnita). Mi devas eltrinki la kalikon de
ĝojo. Ne perdigu min la sentojn, Dio en la ĉielo!
Marianno. El ĉio tio la plej malmulte al mi plaĉis se du homoj sin
amis kaj je l’ fino oni malkovras, ke ili estas parencoj aŭ gefratoj.
La Miss’ Fanny’n mi povus bruligi! Mi tiom ploradis! Estas tiel mizera
sorto! (Ŝi deturniĝas kaj ploras maldolĉe).
Vilhelmo (ĵetante sin al ŝia kolo.) Marianno! -- Mia Marianno!
Marianno. Vilhelmo! ne! ne! Je l’ eterne mi vin ne forlasos! Vi estas

Ha, Fabricio, Vi venas en la ĝusta tempo! Mia koro estas malfermita kaj
forta, ke mi ĝin povas diri. Mi nenion al Vi promesis! Estu nia amiko!

Fabricio (malvarme kaj maldolĉe.) Mi ĝin pensis, Vilhelmo! Se vi
kuŝigis tutan vian pezon sur la pesilon, mi devis esti trovita tro
malpeza. Mi revenas, por ke mi forigu el mia koro tion, kio ja devas
esti forigita. Mi senigas min je ĉiuj pretendoj kaj vidas, ke la aferoj
venis jam al la celo; al mi ĝi estas almenaŭ agrabla, ke mi donis
senkulpan kaŭzon.
Vilhelmo. Ne malbenu en tiu ĉi momento kaj ne senigu vin je l’
sentaĵo, pro kiu vi vane pilgrimadis en la vasta mondo! Rigardu tiun

unenforceability of any provision of this agreement shall not void the

1.F.6. INDEMNITY - You agree to indemnify and hold the Foundation, the
trademark owner, any agent or employee of the Foundation, anyone
providing copies of Project Gutenberg™ electronic works in
accordance with this agreement, and any volunteers associated with the
production, promotion and distribution of Project Gutenberg™
electronic works, harmless from all liability, costs and expenses,
including legal fees, that arise directly or indirectly from any of
