L'escena té lloc vora l gorg Negre, un dels
tres llacs de la regió de Noedes, situats en les altes montanyes
que s'alcen entre l Conflent i l'antic comtat de Fenolledes avui
formant part del departament francès anomenat Pireneus
Orientals.
Segle XIII, durant el regnat de Jaume I de Catalunya i d'Aragó.
## Escena I
S'ovira l'ampla extensió del estany Negre
reposant entre singles espadats. Les aigues vénen a morir a una
vora oberta, pas xamós que deixen les pelades montanyes. En
primer terme comença una pendent plena d'herba i tatxonada de
floretes de colors vius, dominant-hi les blanques; un poc més
lluny arrenca un bosc espès. Prop dels prats, una cabana de
pastors, i, escampats jeient per la jaça, vaques i vedells.
És de nit. A poca distancia, entre les roques esberlades, hi han
encara clapes de neu. Gran quietut per les valls i calmes: sols se
sent l'aire com remoreja al atravessar el bosc, i en el gorg un
soroll d'ones am prou feines perceptible. Brillen els estels i
reflecteixen en les aigues.
De sopte l cel cambía de tons; va blavejant i les estrelles
apagant-se; apunta l die, de color rosat, per darrera ls cims no
gaire llunyadans; després el cel se torna blanc fins que llustreja.
Augmenta la remor d'aucells i d'insectes; tot se va distingint més
clar.
De dintre la cabana surt un rebadà d'uns quinze anys, i, depressa i
com atret, es va a posar mig adormit a la vora del estany.
Tot seguit apareix d'entre les aigues, sortint no més fins a mig cos,
una Fada hermosa, am gran cabellera rossa i esllanguida. Movent els
braços nusos com volent atraure i tirant enrera l tors, canta
dolçament:
La Fada: Vine, vine, pastoret! Vine am mi
dintre de l'aigua, que hi veuras el meu palau: mai has vist
bellesa tanta. Jo per tu m moro d'amor: seras rei de la montanya.
Mira, els braços tinc oberts si vols rebre una abraçada. (_Tot
enfonzant-se a poc a poc_): Vine, vine, pastoret! Vine am mi
dintre de l'aigua!
El rebadà se gira fregant-se ls ulls sense
estar ben despert, i torna a dins de la cabana. La Fada
desapareix.
## Escena II
Se senten dringar els esquellots de les
vaques al aixecar-se. Al llevant, el cel ha pres un to de foc. Ja
tots els termes són ben clars.
Ixen de la barraca un pastor molt vell i el rebadà, ja deixondits.
Pastor: I com te revolcaves aquesta nit!
El dormî a la montanya t'ha dat neguit.
Rebadà: Com que tota la vetlla vareu parlâ de les
coses estranyes que al gorg hi hà, no he somiat sinó encisos i
encantaments que, si el somni haig de creure, no són dolents, i he
somiat una fada cridant-me a mi, que com l'isart costava
d'aconseguî.
Pastor: Res de bo pots cercar-hi dins del estany.
Benehides les aigues bé ho són cada any, més ningú ha tret les
bruixes que hi són al fons, i quimeres i cabres i diablons.
Rebadà: Més, i la dòna d'aigua? Prou que n deu sê de
bonica, i les altres pot-ser també!
Pastor: Ja ho pots saber tirant-hi un roc. Veuràs les
bruixes arremengades fins les cuixes i de la boca treient foc. I com
del gorg la tempestat ix furïosa: la nuvolada paorosa se va extenent
que fa fredat. Esparverat, xisclant, el corb encreua l'aire, i del
estany surt mala flaire, i vents contraris formen torb. La pedregada
cau seguit, i una brumera cobreix el gorg, que tot s'altera, i ho
avassalla tot la nit. Llavors, del llamp a la claror, veuras les
bruixes arremengades fins les cuixes, escupint rates i fetor. Podràs
ben dî a-les-ores que encantaments i que encisos són sempre, sempre
dolents, i que fades boniques mai n'hi han hagut, sinó que als ulls
les porta la joventut. Jo fins crec que la boira que ls bons camins
amaga, tota s forma, tota allí dins. Cinquanta anys que la vida de
pastô hi fet; de gorgs i de montanyes ja n sé l secret.
Rebadà: per ell L'he somiada hermosa: si jo fos brau,
al fons la seguiria del seu palau.
Pastor: Que no t'hi aboquis gaire, que an el pastô
desde l fons sempre crida la temptació! El die és alt! A les vaques
el jaç refem, herba fresca demanen, de prats mudem. Els sarrons
aparia, volta l ramat, que pasturi la gleba de Bosc Cremat.
El Pastor surt empaitant vaques i vedells.
El Rebadà proveeix els sarrons, entrant i sortint de la barraca.
## Escena III
És ple die, un die tranquil i sense nuvols.
Mentres el Rebadà està d'esquena al gorg treballant, brolla del estany
la Fada, i am mig cos enfòra va cantant:
La Fada: El meu cor no l troba i es migra
d'amor; a la meva alcova fins m'hi agafa por; bé n'és de guarnida
de coralls i d'or: tot a goig convida, més tinc fred al cor. Vine
aquí a la vora, que t faré petons tot mirant a-l'ora de l'estany
el fons. Si am mi vols entrar-hi, pastoret galan, mai més
solitari els cims te veuran. Ple de meravelles veuras mon palau;
tindras les estrelles, et daré l cel blau, que tot s'emmiralla en
mos ulls de foc; ma boca en rialla com la flor descloc; tinc la
cabellera rossa com l'or fi, cara petonera i pell de satí; i
tindras serventes hermoses com jo... Si de mi t'ausentes, no
tindràs això.
El Rebadà, d'esquena a l'estany, s'ha anat
escoltant el cant atraient de la Fada.
Rebadà: Si ara gosés entrar-hi! Si ara
gosés! Lo que sovint m'hi crida no sé lo que és.
Pastor: (_de lluny_) Aaaaaaa!
La Fada s'enfonza. El Rebadà, a qui l Pastor
ha cridat, fuig depressa, però mig recant-li de deixar aquell
lloc.
## Escena IV
Darrera ls cims espadats surt el sol, roent,
lluminosissim. L'alegria de la Natura s transllueix en les més
agradables remors: xerradiça d'aucells, murmuri del xaragall que
neix en l'estany, i de l'oreig a travers de l'abetosa. Un escamot
d'isarts, saltant per les roques, van a abeurar-se a l'estany, i
fugen esperitats.
Se sent el trot d'un cavall que va acostant-se.
Apareix a galop rabent, en un gros cavall blanc, Jausbert de Paracolls
am Gueralda d'Evol a la gropa. Ella, am gonella blanca, el ros cabell
partit en dugues llargues trenes encintades, al mig del front el
fermall d'una anella d'or. Ell va mig armat: elm petit, perpunt i
espasa; l'escut penja al costat dret del cavall; és jove i ferreny;
duu barba negra i escassa. Gueralda va embolicada amb el mantell de
Jausbert. Vénen cançats de cavalcar tota la nit i s'aturen damunt
l'herba.
Jausbert: Aquí, lloc solitari i apacible,
bon deport i solaç podrem trobar.
Gueralda: Desert de gent me sembla aquêt paratge i me
fa por...
Jausbert: (_que ha descavalcat i, apoiant-se en el
cavall, la contempla_) Am mi temor no tinguis en lloc. Ajudant-la a
descavalcar d'un cop de braç i deixant-la asseguda damunt l'herba:
Oh! descavalca, vida meva, i damunt l'herba cercarem repòs. (_Al
cavall, amanyagant-lo:_) Tu, lleial Talla-vent, corre ben lliure i
que arroceguin les inutils regnes: ja l pes suau del meu amor no
portes. (_El cavall va a abeurar-se, assedegat, en el gorg. A la
Natura:_) Aigues, valls i montanyes! Alegreu-vos! Ella és aquí! L'he
treta d'entre ls homes que l nostre amor no volen, i l'he duta aquí,
per a gaudir la pau serena que no s frueix en els castells i viles.
Me l'han negada allí: jo l'he robada d'una cambra reclosa, i aquí hem
vingut, Natura, am desitjos d'amor i llibertat! Feu arreplec de les
remors més dolces, alegres faigs i colossals abets! Murmureu més
suau, fonts tot just nades! Afalagueu-la! (_Girant-se de cara a
Gueralda, que, asseguda damunt de l'herba, l'ha seguit am la vista
tot el temps qu'ell ha parlat:_) Gueralda! Amor! Com més sovint
contemplo la vostra faç, i com més sols i lliures, Gueralda, menos
goso a enamorar-vos i el cant d'amor que dintre l cor estojo als
llavis no puc dur. Lassadeta heu d'estar: la cavalcada llarga ha
sigut i per viaranys abruptes.
Gueralda: El vostre bell parlar coratge m dóna: pel
meu fatic és dolça medecina. La nit, mentres fugiem, de neguitoses
ombres amdugues vores dels camins poblava, i no m deixava girâ ls
ulls enrera la por de que ns seguien. Al trotar del corcer foguejaven
les pedres, i al soroll de ses potes creia sentir-ne més que ns
empaitaven, i el pensament me deia "Que hem fet! que hem fet!"
Jausbert: D'aquêt vostre temor la nit n'és causa: aquí
arribem, i l'alba ns surt a rebre. Ningú ns vindrà an aquí la pau a
rompre. La pena abandonem, i amb el gran amor nostre aconortem-nos,
que ja res més hem d'esperar dels homes.
Gueralda: (_aixecant-se_) Mostreu-me, doncs, mon
guiador dolcissim, les meravelles d'aquêt lloc xamós.
Jausbert: (_passant-li l braç a la cintura i
emportant-se-la a recorre la montanya_) Mira, amor meu: les neus se
fonen, l'herba s redreça i es refà; dels regalims que elles li donen
la fresca font sen gaudirà. La gleba tova i regalada del nostre amor
serà l coixí: ens mirarem la fondalada, de flors omplint-nos a desdî.
Blanca i lluenta la jonquilla veuras que esclata prop la neu: gaire
bé m sembla que n'ets filla quan d'aprop miro l rostre teu. Aquí és
el ple de Primavera quan gaire bé ja fuig del pla; del cel la volta
aquí sencera en aquêt gorg reflectirà. Sota ls abets, que és ple de
molça, mai trobarem ningú, ningú. Aquí la vida és sempre dolça. Tot
és per tu, tot és per tu.
Gueralda: (_enamorada_) Parla, parla, Jausbert, que
m'afalaga de ta veu la dolçor! Del teu amor sempre seré cativa,
sempre!
Jausbert: Torna-m'ho a dir, Gueralda meva, torna-hi,
que l cor de goig m'omplena lo que m dius. Més ai! en aquêts ulls que
m tenen pres no hi veig brillar dels meus la gran ventura.
Gueralda: Una ombra és de temor, que tu m'esvaïras,
tinc confiança. Sempre he sentit a dir que dintre del estany hi tenen
un palau les encantades, i al punt de mitja nit una sardana fan que
omple les valls de visïons estranyes.
Jausbert: No ho creguis, amor meu: jo prou que hi he
vingut pels volts d'aquest estany a totes hores am l'ós abraonat per
batre-m cos a cos, o del esquerp isart corrent darrera. Mai, mai he
trobat res d'això que la gent diu. Oh, no! No hi hà perills a la
montanya! I si un die apareix alguna fera, veuras al teu Jausbert,
que desde infant té l'habit de la caça, com prompte an els teus peus
l'haurà abatuda, i junt amb els pastors, que n faran festa, tastarem
la sabrosa selvatgina. (_Prenent les mans a Gueralda_): Oh! Deixa,
hermosa, que en el teu front purissim un bés ardent hi ofegui... Més,
ai! El cap abaixes i un respecte com el que vaig sentir devant la
Verge la vetlla de les armes fa que am mos llavis a fregar no t gosi.
Que és lo que l marbre del teu front entela? Que és lo que l cel del
teu mirâ ennuvola? Digam-ho!
Gueralda: Una ombra és de temor, que tu m'esvaïras
estic segura. No m deixa l pensament el rostre enfellonit que l pare
haurà tingut al despertar-se. Al resseguî l castell sa filla no haurà
vist i bé n'haurà cridat de cops: "Gueralda!"
Jausbert: Deixa, deixa l temor, aimada meva, que de
combats i lluites l'amor, per esser fort, ne té fretura. Bé n'hem
hagut de sostenir nosaltres, i el nostre amor mai ha parat de creixe.
Per un mal allevadiç el meu pare al teu cercava, i abrivat,
trovant-lo un jorn, el va ofendre de paraula. Desde llavors an el meu
la venjança hagué jurada; mon pare temps hà que és mort, i el teu
crida encar "venjança" i vol venjar-se en el fill d'honta que li féu
el pare. Més traidora li és la sort al d'Evol altra vegada: del de
Paracolls el fill s'ha enamorat de Gueralda, i volent matâ a Jausbert
a sa propria filla mata.
Gueralda: Jausbert, deixem els odis que ls nostres
pares en mal temps tingueren.
Jausbert: A posta l nostre amor semblava haver vingut
per esborrar-los, més ton pare, inclement, no ho ha vulgut...
Gueralda: Jausbert! Si el meu pare no ho vol, ho vol
sa filla.
Jausbert: (_encisat_) I ja l pesar se t'ha esvait del
tot?
Gueralda: (_defallint d'enamorada i apoiant el cap a
l'espatlla de Jausbert_) Ja no soc sinó teva, tota la vida teva, ben
teva!
Jausbert: (_segur del seu triomf_) Oh! Que hem fet bé!
Confia: hi hà aquí dintre l'unic cor que amb el teu pot batre
a-l'hora. (_Besant-la fogosament_): Hi hà bés més pur que l que
l'amor inspira? Que batallin els homes! Que s'odiin! Entre nosaltres
mai està lluny el pensament del acte. Oh! Que franc és l'amor! que
sanitós! que sant! Pot-sê en aquestes hores devant del meu castell
s'acosta l d'Evol am gent d'armes a punt. Pot-ser per perseguir-me
entre ls sotmesos seus ara fa lleva. Que la faci! El meu antic
castell, que l'arrasi! Què m fa? Que hi fariem en sales i entre
sedes, tapits i llums i gent?
Gueralda: (_baixet i carinyosament_) No, aquí! Aquí
per sempre, per sempre i sola am tu!
Jausbert: decidit Tu ho has dit, dolça veu! Lliure
l'amor! Lliure tot hora siga! Sota esplendid dosser de branques
tendres aucells ens cantaran les esposalles millor que cap juglar.
Aquesta nit serà la cerimonia. Demà per celebrar que meva siguis, pel
capçal del tou llit de trepadella el Sol foguejarà! (_Llevant-se
l'elm i l'espasa, que ella va posant damunt de l'herba_). ¡Fòra les
armes, fòra, que per les lluites de l'amor no calen!
Gueralda: (_apassionada, ajeguda damunt de l'herba_)
¡T'estimo, t'estimo, Jausbert del meu cor! Que res d'aquí ns tregui,
si no és la mort.
Tots dos No ns mourem més d'aquí. Fruïrem uns quants
dies de ventura, i la mort pot venir!
Jausbert: (_abraçant-la_) Estreta abraçada que ns
lligui ben fort. ¡T'estimo, t'estimo, Gueralda del cor! (_Mig
agenollat i aguantant-li l cap_): ¡Oh conta-m, que m serà dolç de
sentir, com nasqué en tu l'amor!
Gueralda: Va ser llavors que a Barcelona amb el meu
pare vaig anar, quan, a l'impuls suau de l'ona, el gran rei Jacme va
arribar. Era Mallorques recobrada i a la ciutat tot era gent. Amb la
senyera desplegada les naus venien amb bon vent. El jove rei, al
apareixe, el poble d'ell era orgullós; i al seu costat jo t vaig
coneixe, jove com ell, com ell hermós. Ta faç tenia prou gravada de
quan tots dos erem infants, que més d'un cop a fira a Prada jo t'hi
havia vist abans. Hardit hi anaves amb ton pare allí a Mallorques, i
escuder; brau en la guerra fores... i are tornaves orfe i cavaller.
Com t'envejaven jo ho sentia, altres barons del Rosselló; fins el meu
pare i tot volia, com tu, estar prop del rei millor. I d'aquell jorn
la teva imatge no m'ha deixat un sol moment: d'ençà que duc tal
companyatge el meu amor ha anat creixent. (_Es va condormint de
delicia i de cançament en els braços de Jausbert._)
Jausbert: Oh dolça amor! Oh vida regalada que aquí
disfrutarem! Reposa damunt l'herba atapaida, si lassadeta estas.
Gueralda: (_adormint-se_) ¡T'estimo, t'estimo,
Jausbert del meu cor! Estreta abraçada que ns lligui ben fort.
(_S'adorm._)
Jausbert: Que hermosa que és en el meu braç
dormida! (_La besa_). El Sol és alt, temprat és el matí. Bona hora
per refer la nit perduda fugint, fugint al trot de Talla-vent. Més
quan la nit el seu mantell estengui, Gueralda serà meva! Treva l'amor
demana i bon repòs.
(_S'extén extasiat a l'herba al costat d'ella._ )
## Escena V
Al cap d'una estona que dormen, brolla del
gorg la Fada fins a mig cos. Aquesta vegada porta al cap una
corona de jonquilles.
La Fada: Veniu, veniu, fades, veniu fins
aquí: les mans enllaçades, mireu-los dormir. Correu! Correu!
Aneu-hi depressa! Correu! Correu, que ls encisareu!
Van eixint del gorg algunes fades a colles
petites i com si s'anessin desvetllant. No porten sinó una tunica
fina i prisada d'un color verd-blau. Llarga cabellera rossa; al
cap una corona de bàlecs florits; peus descalços, braços nusos.
Cap lligam a la cintura: han d'esser la visió mig-eval de la
fada, no una visió clàssica.
S'acosten als dos enamorats adormits i sels contemplen bona estona.
Després van executant graciosament lo que la Fada ls comanda.
La Fada: Jo soc amorosa vivint entre neu.
Soc fada gelosa: Jausbert serà meu.
Chor llunyadà de les fades _del gorg Estelat que se
sent a travers de la montanya_: Fruiu, fruiu, fades del gorg Negre!
Fruiu, fruiu, si un jove teniu!
La Fada: An ella l vull pendre, jo l vull posseî: tot
lo jove tendre, tot ho vull per mi. Jo aquí soc senyora: si l brau
cavaller a mi m'enamora, per mi haurà d'esser. L'espasa enciseu-li,
que no faci dany, i l'elm enfonzeu-li a dins de l'estany.
Les fades submergeixen l'espasa i l'elm en
el gorg, i els tornen al costat de Jausbert.
Chor llunyadà de les fades _del gorg
Estelat_: Fruiu, fruiu, que ja ns feu enveja! Fruiu, fruiu, si
pres el teniu!
La Fada: L'espasa encantada, que resti indefens: ho
vol una fada a qui l'amor venç. Plaer sense mida espera am dalit, i
en mort o bé en vida serà meu a nit. No és teu, no és teu, pobreta
Gueralda! No és teu, no és teu, que a nit serà meu!
Chor llunyadà de les fades _del gorg Estelat
alarmades_: Fugiu, fugiu, molts homes s'acosten! Fugiu, fugiu, si
encara l teniu!
_Totes les fades sen van tumultuosament a amagar-se dins de l'aigua.
La Fada, abans d'enfonzar-se, diu:_
La Fada: Oh Gueralda! Jausbert no serà teu: viu o mort
serà meu! Adéu!
## Escena VI
Lluny, a dalt del bosc i prop d'un cim, s'hi
veuen uns quants homes: miren a tots indrets, i un d'ells s'adona
dels dos enamorats adormits.
Un dels homes _desde lluny_ Són allí!
Provem d'arribar-hi!
Desapareixen els homes.
Gueralda s desperta després d'haver-se agitat una estona: ha vist els
homes devallar per unes roques, i crida a Jausbert tota esglaiada.
Gueralda: Jausbert! Jausbert! Algun perill
s'acosta! (_Anguniosa veient que no s desperta i tocant-lo_):
Jausbert! Desperta-t! (_A la fi Jausbert es desperta i la mira an
ella dolçament_). Sento que algun perill s'acosta per nosaltres!
Jausbert: Asserena-t, Gueralda! No tinguis por de res,
en mi confia! (_Es veu un escamot d'homes al fons del bosc, que
senyalen i després desapareixen_).
Gueralda: (_que s'ha adonat de la gent i s'ha
esferit_) Oh! Posa-t l'elm! (_Animant-se_) Jo t cenyiré
l'espasa. (_Ho fa_) És hora de combat. He sentit fressa.
Jausbert: (_aixecant-se_) És una fera que per 'quí
s'acosta. La ballesta no duc: la força del meu braç caldrà que
provi.
Gueralda: No són feres, Jausbert, no, que són homes!
Jausbert: (_sorprès_) Homes? Segur. I bé! Què hi fa?
La nostra solitut a rompre vénen? Doncs ja veuras, Gueralda, que l
meu pit és tan fort com amorós el cor que dins hi bat.
Gueralda: Mira, com ja s'acosten!
## Escena VII
Van eixint per tots indrets homes de guerra
i mesnaders am varietat d'armes i trajos. Jausbert se posa en
actitud de combat, protegint a Gueralda.
Un home: (_regoneixent a Jausbert_)
Jausbert de Paracolls! Ja ns ho temiem! Ningú més, si no vós, ens
l'ha robada.
Alguns: (_cridant_) Agafem-los!
Jausbert: (_furiós_) Enrera! Qui sou, que no us conec
i em perseguiu?
Un home: Si vós no ns coneixeu, prou que ns coneix
Gueralda. Ens l'heu robada i en mal lloc l'heu duta: de malefiques
fades és l'estada. (_Sarcastic_). Bon lloc, a fè, per amorós
colloqui! (_Riu_).
Jausbert: Calla, bestia! Què saps? (_Van compareixent
més colles d'homes de guerra._)
Uns homes: (_cridant a altres pel fons de les valls_)
Són aquí! Són aquí! Ja ls hem trobats!
## Escena VIII
En mig de la darrera colla d'homes, ve l
senyor d'Evol, furiós i cançat.
Senyor d'Evol: (_entrant_) El lladre de ma
llar, ont és? Vull veure-l! (_Gueralda resta esglaiada al veure
al seu pare. Jausbert, concirós i ferm al seu costat. El d'Evol
diu al tenir-lo devant_): ¡Ets tu, Jausbert, el darrer brot
maligne de ta innoble niçaga! La malvestat del pare encar me
dura, i el fill la pau me lleva del meu castell tot rosegant-me
l'honra. ¿I aquí me l'has portada la filla del meu cor? Poc te
valdrà, mal caçador selvatge, de trascar tot lo die per les
serres. Am venjança terrible aquí meteix vull esborrar l'afront.
Oh! Com esclatarà d'una vegada l'oig que tant temps a dins del
pit estojo. (_Als homes:_) Agafeu-lo!
Alguns homes volten a Jausbert.
Jausbert: (_als homes, ironicament_) Feu's
enrera, valents! (_Dirigint-se al d'Evol:_) El vostre mal parlar
jo he escoltat serè. M'anima a mi l'amor, ell me donarà
halè. (_Senyalant al d'Evol:_) A qui enverina l'oig, què pot
posar-li fre? Am tanta gent veniu que poc m'heu afrontat, més
crec acceptareu un singular combat: encara no sou vell perquè us
venci l'edat.
Gueralda: (_interposant-se, desesperada, al veure que
volen batre-s_) Pare! Jausbert!

Es posen amdós combatents a cada extrem del
camp i batallen a cops de bran o espasa llarga per estabellar-se.
Tots s'interessen pels dos combatents, silenciosos al principi,
després animant am crits ansiosos al d'Evol. Jausbert para bé ls
cops millor que no ls dóna. Muden d'extrem partint sempre de les
lilles marcades a terra, i s'abraonen. L'elm del d'Evol reb un
cop que sembla un moment deixar-lo estebornit. Fugint de la
regla, enfonza l'espasa en el costat dret de Jausbert. Esglai
general; alguns se sorprenen de la mala acció del llur senyor.
Aviat de la ferida brolla la sang.
Jausbert: (_mig caient, mirant-se la sang
com li raja_) Com fuig la vida!... L'amor!... La joventut! Adéu,
gaia esperança! Adéu, ferm pensament! Del món la traidoria mai
fugirà?

a un brau que s defenia.
Senyor d'Evol: Déu ho ha vulgut! Jo, matant a un
malvat, sa llei cumpleixo. (_A Jausbert, que està expirant en els
braços d'alguns homes:_) Am tot i defensar-te, no t vull donar
l'honor de cavaller. Fins a la fi venjança s cumplirà. Aquí has
portat ma filla, lloc malehit, i aquí, de fades i bruixots estada, ta
fi hi hauràs trobat. (_Ordenant an els homes. Alguns vacilen, però

Ses entranyes de fera les aligues i els corbs les menjaran. Al lladre
de ma llar que l martiritzin: am bécs i urpes li trocejin el cor ans
del darrer badall. I si l cordam se trenca, en el gorg trobarà tomba
espaiosa. (_Els homes que han desaparegut emportant-sen a Jausbert
expirant, apareixen ara dalt d'una roca desde la qual penjen el cos
del jove, que queda abocat al estany. Després els homes sen van._)

Tot queda sol. No més es veu penjat a la
roca per les aixelles el cadavre de Jausbert.
Del estany s'aixeca a poc a poc i pren cos una gran nuvolada amb
acompanyament d'estranyes remors de tempestat. Després tot se va
ennegrint, fins que s desencadena per complet la tempestat am trons i
un seguit de pluja que bat arbres i roques. Les aigues del gorg
s'agiten.
Se sent el dring dels esquellots de vaques que corren. Apareixen el
Pastor i el Rebadà, que van a aixoplugar-se a la barraca.
Pastor: La tempestat s'aixeca tot de
repent: no sembla sinó cosa d'encantament. Si ets tu que has
tirat pedres dins de l'estany, l'ultim any que am mi vinguis serà
aquest any!
El Rebadà, am posat de sorpresa i d'escusa,
es fica a dintre la cabana seguint al pastor.
Gran fosca, pluja espessa i forta, trons i llamps. Passa galopant,
espantat, Talla-vent, el cavall de Jausbert, abandonades les regnes i
caiguda la sella. Segueix la tempestat més forta i més inclement.
A la soptada claror d'un llampec es veu Jausbert penjat a la roca i a
la Fada abraçada amb ell besant-lo i acariciant-lo. La vesta que duu
és llarga i revolta com una onada. Mentre amb un braç esquiva una
aliga que comença a planar sobre Jausbert, diu triomfant:
