Jo liekö luonto kehnontunut,
perinyt viat ihmisten.
Niin näyttää, -- kukat, eläimetkin
käy valhesuulla jokainen.
Korean narrin kanssa lilja
se liehuu, tuoko siveää?
Myös perho suukoin huikentelee,
jo unhoon viattomuus jää.
Ja orvokinkaan kainoutta
en takaa, pikku kukkanen
se kiemaellen kietoo, tuoksuu,
ja maineeseen on kaiho sen.
Mä epäilen, jos satakieli
tunteistaan laulaa, eikö vaan
viserrä, itke, liioittele
se yksin tottumuksestaan.
Pois totuus pakenet jo maasta
ja uskollisuus häviät. --
Ja joskin koirat liehuu -- haisee
kuin muinen, nekin pettävät.
AATAMI ENSIMMÄINEN.
Sä laitoit taivaasta santarmin,
mi kantoi miekkaa vihan,
mun paratiisista hääti pois,
se julma, armotta ihan.
Nyt vaimoineni mä vaellan
ja etsin eloa uutta.
Toki nautin jo tiedon hedelmää,
sit' et taida sä enää muuttaa.
Et estää voi, että tiedän mä
sun kääpiökasvusi kurjan.
Sä suotta surmalla mahtailet
ja nostat myrskyn hurjan.
Oi luoja, kuinka sun harkintas
ylen viisaan toimen keksi,
sitä kehua kylläkin kannattaa
maanpiirin valkeudeksi.
Nyt en minä koskaan unhota
sitä vanhaa yrttitarhaa.
Paratiisi ei oikea ollut se,
kun kielsi se hedelmän parhaan.
Vapautta mä vaadin täydelleen.
Jos huomaan salpoja milloin,
paratiisini vankilaks' vaihettuu
ja helvetiksi silloin.
ERÄÄLLE VALTIOLLISELLE RUNOILIJALLE.
Sä laulat lailla Tyrtaion
ja innostusta loitsit.
Mut huonosti sä yleisön
ja aikas' valikoitsit.
He suopeasti kuulevat
ja ylistyksiin puhkee,
kuink' onkaan runos joustavat
ja aattees' lento uhkee.
Sull' eläköönkin toisinaan
he huutaa luona maljan.
Ja sotalaulus ulvoo he
seassa melun, naljan.
Nääs kapakassa iltaisin
laulelee orjahenki.
Se ruokaa hyvin sulattaa,
on höysteeks' juomallenki.
SYVÄ HUOKAUS.
Epäkelpo usko kerran
riistää meiltä taivaan herran.
Päättyyköhän kirous? --
Sakramentti, kirkastus!
Rukous jää unhoon pian
kiroukset saavat sijan,
kun on eessä vihamies. --
Sakramentti, jumalties'!
Lempeen, ei mut' vihaamahan
suokoon luoja halun pahan.
Muuten ei voi kirota:
sakramentit, jumala!
SALAISUUS.
Ei huokailla, on silmä kuiva
ja nauretaan -- ei naurua.
Ei katsehet ja kasvoin sävy
salaisuuttamme ilmoita.
Sen mykkä tuska rintahamme
luo pohjatonta polttoaan.
Ja vaikka sydän riehuu, huutaa,
suu vaiti-oloin suljetaan.
Sä kysy kehtolapsoselta
tai käänny puoleen vainajain.
Ne ehkä sulle ilmaisevat,
mit alati salata sain.
YÖVARTIJAN TULO PARIISIIN.
"Kuu vartija öinen, sä nopsajalka,
miks' kasvojas kattaa hämmästys.
Rakas maani, kuinka se voida alkaa
isänmaani, tuo toki tervehdys".
Hyvin vallan! Rehottaa siunaus, lepo,
siveätä on majojen paimennus.
Käy rauhassa, taatusti edistyshepo,
ja varmaa Saksan on vaurastus.
Ei loista se pinnalta Ranskan malliin,
missä vapaus elolle muotoja loi.
Kas Saksan mies se rintansa valliin
tuon vapaustuntehen kammitsoi.
Ja Kölnin kirkkoa korjaellaan
se ansio hohenzollien vaan.
Habsburg'ista apua lahjoitellaan,
suo Wittelbach lasit ikkunaan.
Ja perustuslaki, se vapausmuuri
on luvattu, sana on panttina jo,
ihan keisarisana, se aarre on suuri,
kuin Reinissä tarujen aarteisto.
Ja Rein, jalo virta, virroista muhkein
on meidän, maamme se kestitsee.
Sen jalkoja huuhtovi Hollanti uhkein
ja Sveitsi sen hapsia hoitelee.
Ja laivasto luojan lahja niin vankka
ylivoimamme turvaa, ja soutavat tään
kaleriorjat, jo tultanee kahlekin rankka
pois soutajain jaloista jättämään.
Kevät kukkivi. Niityllä vihryt loimi.
Vapautta ja luontoa ahmitaan.
Ja kunhan kielletään kustannustoimi,
niin sensoritkin on muistoja vaan.
HENRIK.
Kanossassa eessä linnan
keisari on Saksan Henrik
murhemekoin, paljasjaloin.
-- Yö on sateinen ja kylmä.
Ikkunasta ylhäält' tähyy
kaksi haamua, ja kuuhut
Gregorion kaljuun päähän,
Mathildinkin[1] rintaan paistaa.
Henrik kalvain huulinensa
isämeitää mutiseepi.
Mutta keisarrinnassansa
salaa kiroo, salaa lausuu:
"Kaukana mun Saksassani
kohoavat lujat vuoret,
niiden salakomeroissa
kasvaa rauta sotapiiluun.
Kaukana mun Saksassani
ylenevät tammimetsät,
ja pisimmän tammen runko
piiluun oivan varren antaa.
Sä mun kallis Saksanmaani
olet kantava sen miehen,
joka tuskieni käärmeen
murskaava on sotakirvein".
[1] Paavi Gregorius saatuaan kuulla Henrik IV tulevan pyytämään vapautta
pannajulistuksesta, meni maakreivitär Mathildin linnaan Canossaan, jonka
edustalla Henrikin paljasjaloin 3 vuorokautta katuvana täytyi seistä.

ELON VAUHTIA.
Oli nauru ja laulu, ja välkkyi leijas
tuo päivän hohto, ja aaltoset heijas
sitä venhoa, jossa mä soutelin
kera ystäväin mielin herttaisin.
Pian pursi ol' pieninä pirstaleina,
ja ystävät huonoina uimareina
ne hukkui helmassa synnyinmaan.
Mun myrsky Seinelle kantoi vaan.
Mä nousin taasen purtehen uuteen,
on toverit uudet ja kaukaisuuteen
mua kantaa vierahan virran vuo.
Koti kaukana! Rintaan se tuskan luo.
On jälleen nauru ja laulu huima,
alus ryskyy, vinkuvi tuuli tuima.
Pois viime tähtönen uinahtaa.
Oi tuskaa! Kaukan' on kotimaa!
TENDENSSIÄ.
Saksan runoseppo, avoin
soikoon vapauslaulelos'
mielet kaikki valtaellen,
töihin suuriin innostellen
marseljeesihymnin tavoin.
Heitä Werther-runot, häilät,
jotka Lotalle[1] vain soi.
Ajan kellon lyönti haasta
kansallesi, nosta maasta
tikarit ja terässäilät!
Heitä huilun soitto. Turhaa
kaikk' on ihantelut nyt.
Tykin, pasuunan soi lailla,
kanuunana kulje mailla,
ryski, jyrise ja murhaa.
Lietso, pauhaa, pakoon aja
maasta viime sortaja.
Tuohon suuntaan laadi runo,
helppotajuiseks' se puno.
-- Ollos kansas innostaja!

maan tapa toinen on.
Moraali meillä valvoo sen
poliisi apunaan,
ett' ompi ajanmukainen
jokainen puvultaan.

LUVATONTA.
Vapaus, Saksan rämeikössä,
ellös kaahlo jaloin paljain,
varustele itses valjain,
sukat, saappaat etsiös sä.
Syvään pääsi suojaks paina
karvalakki tiivisvilla,
että talven tienohilla
säästyy korvalehtes aina.
Saatpa kyllin ruokaa veikko,
vastaisuutta kaikki lupaa,
toki karta tyhmää hupaa,
niihin kietoo ajan peikko.
Kapinoiva ei sun sovi
olla, aina kunnioita
porvareita, mahtajoita,
herroja -- se onneen ovi.
VAROITUS.
Ystävä sun kirjas moiset,
joita laadit turmaan vie sun.
Rauhaa, mainetta jos mielit,
taivu samaan, mihin toiset.
Neuvonut en sua konsaan
kansalle noin haastamahan
papeista ja valtijaista,
saatat itses' perin ansaan.
Kadotus on tulos työskin. --
Ruhtinaill' on kädet pitkät,
papeilla taas kieli pitkä. --
Kansan korva pitkä myöskin.
KIINAN KEISARI.
Isä mun oli kaappinaukkaaja,
hän kohtuutta seurata koki.
Mä ryyppyni ryyppään rajoitta
ja keisari suur' olen toki.
Tää juoma on taikuri tenhoisa
ja mieleeni vaikuttaa se,
ens' ryypystä Kiina on mahtava,
kukoistuksehen puhkeaa se.
Ja valtakuntani keskus tää
ihan kukkaistarhan on lainen.
Olen itse keisari kruunupää,
saa rouvani prinssin vainen.
Ylivuotava täällä on runsaus,
tulee potevat tervehiks' silleen.
Hovimestari, kelpo Konfusius
saa ällinsä kirkkaimmilleen.
Sotilaiden karkea limppukin
on mantelikakkua pelkkää.
Ei verhou köyhät lumppuihin,
sametissa, silkissä helkkää.
Ja mandariiniritaruus,
yli-ikäiset, lahot aivot
taas nuortuu, alkaa häly uus,
palmikkoin viuhkeet raivot.
Vaha templissä suitsuu, huilut soi,
on vallassa uskonkaavat,
ja juutalaiset kääntyy, oi,
pyhän tähden merkiksi saavat.
Ei kumouskiihkoa. -- Mantschutkin
näin kiljuu: huoli emme
me perustuslakia, pyövelin
ja pamppua tarvitsemme.
Askeetit joskin kielteli
pois viiniryypyn maukkaan,
en tottele, valtakuntani
mä onneks' juoda naukkaan.
Taas ryyppy kurkkuun kulahdas,
oot makeaa kuin manna.
Ja kansani on voimakas,
se laulaa: hosianna.
ODOTTAKAA VAIN!
Kun ainoastaan salamoitsen,
luulette, en voi jyristä.
Se erehdys, mä kerta loitsen
ukkosta, -- kyllä osaan mä.
Se hirmuisena puhkee ilmiin,
kun oikea on hetkinen.
Se iskee korvihin ja silmiin
kuin jymy taivaan valtojen.
Ja moni tammi silloin hajoo,
ja moni huojuu palatsi,
niin moni kirkontorni vajoo,
kun koittaa myrskynpäiväni.
VALISTUKSEKSI.
Silmiltäsi suomut Mikko
joko putoo, huomaatko,
että toinen uskalikko
eestäs herkut ryöstää jo.
Nälkäs tyydykkeeksi heittää
sulle ilot taivaassa,
missä autuusrokkaa keittää
enkeli -- ei lihasta.
Heikkoneeko uskos', vaiko
ruokahalus kasvoi, kun
elon maljaan tartuit, saiko
tuo sun sankarlauluhun.
Mikko, vatsan virkistyä
täällä aikanansa suo,
ehtii sitten näivettyä,
konsa hauta peiton luo.
SAKSANMAA.
Viel' on kuin lapsi Saksanmaa,
jot' aurinkoinen hoivaa,
imettäin sille lämpöään
ja tulta kapinoivaa.
Ravinto moinen kasvattaa
ja veren vimmaa äkin.
Te elkää kiistaa nostako,
varokaa naapurväki.
Se jättilaps' on kömpelö,
mi tammen maasta kiskoo
ja sillä selkää, päätänne
armotta ruhjoo, viskoo.
Se on kuin Siegfried saduissa,
mi nous' ja miekan takoi
ja alasimen iskullaan
kahtia sitten jakoi. --
Sä lohikäärmeen ruhjoat,
kohoat sankariksi. --
Hei kuinka äitis aurinko
ylpeillen nauraa siksi. --

KANKURIT.
Ei silmän synkeän kyynel putoo,
kun ikenet irvin he hokee ja kutoo:
oi käärinliinasi Saksanmaa
kirot kolminkertaset kuteiks' saa,
kun pirtamme paukkaa.
Yks' kirous sulle, sä jumalamme,
jota turhaan huusimme tuskissamme
nälän, vilun et hoivaksi joutunut,
meit' ain olet pettänyt, ivaillut.
Yhä pirtamme paukkaa.
Yks' kirous herralle kuninkaalle,
mi vain oli vitsaus, kurjuus maalle
ja viime pennimme riisti vaan,
meit' ammutti niin kuni koiriaan.
Yhä pirtamme paukkaa.
Yks' kirous se isänmaalle vielä,
vale, turmelus, häpeä viihtyvät siellä.
Joka kukkanen aikasin katkeaa
mätä, ummehdus käärmeitä kasvattaa.
Yhä pirtamme paukkaa.
Nyt sukkula suikkaa, pirta piukkaa,
yöt, päivät kutovat kätemme tiukkaa.
Oi käärinliinasi Saksanmaa
kirot kolminkertaiset kuteiks' saa,
kun pirtamme paukkaa.

Herwegh, sä rautanen kiuru,
kun kiirit äärellä auringon
sun helskyvi riemuvirsi.
-- Joko pois on talven kirsi,
ja Saksalle koittanut kevät on?
Herwegh, sä rautanen kiuru,
kun suuntaat korkeelle lentoas,
näköpiiriskö maata ei tapaa?
-- Tuo kevät se kaunis ja vapaa

Hänen Preussista karkoittamisensa johdosta.

kirjoittamiensa runojen johdosta.

On rannalla aavan ja öisen meren
mies nuori niin synkeäotsa.

kalvosimet valkeet, silot,
öljytuoksu, mairesanat
sydän tuntekaa ja ilot.
Oispa sydän lempiväinen
rinnassanne, tulen kuuma.
-- Ah! Mä väsyn lauluihinne,
niiss' on valhelemmen huuma.
Vuorille ma nousta tahdon,
miss' on jalot paimenmajat,
missä rajusti lyö sydän,
tuulten vapaiden on pajat.

siellä kuuset kohoo ylhät.
Purot hyppii, laulaa lintu.
Kiitää jättipilvet jylhät.
Hyvästi te herrat, naiset,
