Nenhum de vós ao certo me conhece,
Astros do espaço, ramos do arvoredo,
Nenhum adivinhou o meu segredo,
Nenhum interpretou a minha prece...
Ninguem sabe quem sou... e mais, parece
Que ha dez mil annos já, neste degredo,
Me vê passar o mar, vê-me o rochedo
E me contempla a aurora que alvorece...
Sou um parto da Terra monstruoso;
Do humus primitivo e tenebroso
Geração casual, sem pae nem mãe...
Mixto infeliz de trevas e de brilho,
Sou talvez Satanaz;--talvez um filho
Bastardo de Jehová;--talvez ninguem!
DISPUTA EM FAMILIA
Dixit insipiens in corde suo: non est Deus.

Sae das nuvens, levanta a fronte e escuta
O que dizem teus filhos rebellados,
Velho Jehovah de longa barba hirsuta,
Solitario em teus Ceus acastellados:
«--Cessou o imperio emfim da força bruta!
Não soffreremos mais, emancipados,
O tyranno, de mão tenaz e astuta,
Que mil annos nos trouxe arrebanhados!
Emquanto tu dormias impassivel,
Topámos no caminho a liberdade
Que nos surriu com gesto indefinivel...
Já provámos os fructos da verdade...
Ó Deus grande, ó Deus forte, ó Deus terrivel,
Não passas duma van banalidade!--»

Mas o velho tyranno solitario,
De coração austero e endurecido,
Que um dia, de enjoado ou distrahido,
Deixou matar seu filho no Calvario,
Surriu com rir extranho, ouvindo o vario
Tumultuoso côro e alarido
Do povo insipiente, que, atrevido,
Erguia a voz em grita ao seu sacrario:
«--Vanitas vanitatum! (disse). É certo
Que o homem vão medita mil mudanças,
Sem achar mais do que erro e desacerto.
Muito antes de nascerem vossos paes
Dum barro vil, ridiculas creanças,
Sabia eu tudo isso... e muito mais!--»
_MORS-AMOR_
Esse negro corcél cujas passadas
Escuto em sonhos, quando a sombra desce,
E, passando a galope, me apparece
Da noite nas fantasticas estradas,
Donde vem elle? Que regiões sagradas
E terriveis cruzou, que assim parece
Tenebroso e sublime, e lhe estremece
Não sei que horror nas crinas agitadas?
Um cavalleiro de expressão potente,
Formidavel, mas placido no porte,
Vestido de armadura reluzente,
Cavalga a féra extranha sem temor.
E o corcél negro diz: «Eu sou a Morte!»
Responde o cavalleiro: «Eu sou o Amor!»

Num sonho todo feito de incerteza,
De nocturna e indizivel anciedade,
É que eu vi teu olhar de piedade
E (mais que piedade) de tristeza...
Não era o vulgar brilho da belleza,
Nem o ardor banal da mocidade...
Era outra luz, era outra suavidade,
Que até nem sei se as ha na natureza...
Um mistico sofrer... uma ventura
Feita só do perdão, só da ternura
E da paz da nossa hora derradeira...
Ó visão, visão triste e piedosa!
Fita-me assim calada, assim chorosa...
E deixa-me sonhar a vida inteira!

Altas horas da noite, o Inconsciente
Sacode-me com força, e acórdo em susto.
Como se o esmagassem de repente,
Assim me pára o coração robusto.
Não que de larvas me povôe a mente
Esse vacuo nocturno, mudo e augusto,
Ou forceje a rasão por que afugente
Algum remorso, com que encara a custo...
Nem fantasmas nocturnos visionarios,
Nem desfilar de espectros mortuarios,
Nem dentro em mim terror de Deus ou Sorte...
Nada! o fundo dum poço, humido e morno,
Um muro de silencio e treva em torno,
E ao longe os passos sepulcraes da Morte.

Na floresta dos sonhos, dia a dia,
Se interna meu dorido pensamento...
Nas regiões do vago esquecimento
Me conduz, passo a passo, a fantasia...
Atravesso, no escuro, a nevoa fria
Dum mundo estranho, que povôa o vento...
E meu queixoso e incerto sentimento
Só das visões da noite se confia.
Que misticos desejos me enlouquecem?
Os abismos do Nírvana apparecem
A meus olhos, na muda immensidade!
Nesta viagem pelo ermo espaço,
Só busco o teu encontro e o teu abraço,
Morte! irman do Amor e da Verdade!

Eu não sei quem tu és--mas não procuro
(Tal é minha confiança) devassal-o.
Basta sentir-te ao pé de mim, no escuro,
Entre as fórmas da noite, com quem falo.
Atravez do silencio frio e obscuro
Teus passos vou seguindo, e, sem abalo,
No cairel dos abismos do Futuro
Me inclino á tua voz, para sondal-o.
Por ti me engolfo no nocturno mundo
Das visões da região innominada,
A ver se fixo o teu olhar profundo...
Fixal-o, comprehendel-o, basta uma hora,
Funerea Beatriz de mão gelada...
Mas unica Beatriz consoladora!

Longo tempo ignorei (mas que cegueira
Me trazia este espirito enublado!)
Quem fosses tu, que andavas a meu lado,
Noite e dia, impassivel companheira...
Muitas vezes, é certo, na canceira,
No tedio extremo dum viver maguado,
Para ti levantei o olhar turbado,
Invocando-te, amiga derradeira...
Mas não te amava então nem conhecia:
Meu pensamento inerte nada lia
Sobre essa muda fronte, austera e calma.
Luz intima, afinal, alumiou-me...
Filha do mesmo pae, já sei teu nome,
Morte, irman coeterna da minha alma!

Que nome te darei, austera imagem,
Que avisto já num angulo da estrada,
Quando me desmaiava a alma prostrada
Do cansaço e do tedio da viagem?
Em teus olhos vê a turba uma voragem,
Cobre o rosto e recua apavorada...
Mas eu confio em ti, sombra vellada,
E cuido perceber tua linguagem...
Mais claros vejo, a cada passo, escritos,
Filha da noite, os lemmas do Ideal,
Nos teus olhos profundos sempre fitos...
Dormirei no teu seio inalteravel,
Na communhão da paz universal,
Morte libertadora e inviolavel!

Só quem teme o Não-ser é que se assusta
Com teu vasto silencio mortuario,
Noite sem fim, espaço solitario,
Noite da Morte, tenebrosa e augusta...
Eu não: minh'alma humilde mas robusta
Entra crente em teu atrio funerario:
Para os mais és um vacuo cinerario,
A mim surri-me a tua face adusta.
A mim seduz-me a paz santa e inefavel,
E o silencio ideal do Inalteravel,
Que involve o eterno amor no eterno lucto.
Talvez seja peccado procurar-te,
Mas não sonhar comtigo e adorar-te,
Não-ser, que és o Ser unico absoluto.
_DIVINA COMEDIA_

Erguendo os braços para o ceu distante
E invectivando os deuses invisiveis,
Os homens clamam:--«Deuses impassiveis,
A quem serve o destino triumphante,
Porque é que nos creastes?! Incessante
Corre o tempo e só géra, inextinguiveis,
Dôr, peccado, illusão, luctas horriveis,
Num turbilhão cruel e delirante...
Pois não era melhor na paz clemente
Do nada e do que ainda não existe,
Ter ficado a dormir eternamente?
Porque é que para a dôr nos evocastes?»
Mas os deuses, com voz ainda mais triste,
Dizem:--«Homens! porque é que nos creastes?»
_NO TURBILHÃO_
No meu sonho desfilam as visões,
Espectros dos meus proprios pensamentos,
Como um bando levado pelos ventos,
Arrebatado em vastos turbilhões...
Numa espiral, de estranhas contorsões,
E donde sáem gritos e lamentos,
Vejo-os passar, em grupos nevoentos,
Distingo-lhes, a espaços, as feições...
--Fantasmas de mim mesmo e da minha alma,
Que me fitaes com formidavel calma,
Levados na onda turva do escarceo,
Quem sois vós, meus irmãos e meus algozes?
Quem sois, visões miserrimas e atrozes?
Ai de mim! ai de mim! e quem sou eu?!...

Não morreste, por mais que o brade á gente
Uma orgulhosa e van philosophia...
Não se sacode assim tão facilmente
O jugo da divina tyrania!
Clamam em vão, e esse triunfo ingente
Com que a Razão--coitada!--se inebria,

Na tua mão, sombrio cavalleiro,
Cavalleiro vestido de armas prêtas,
Brilha uma espada, feita de comêtas,
Que rasga a escuridão, como um luzeiro.
Caminhas no teu curso aventureiro,
Todo involto na noite que projectas...
Só o gladio de luz com fulvas bétas
Emerge do sinistro nevoeiro.
--«Se esta espada que empunho é coruscante,
(Responde o negro cavalleiro-andante)
É porque esta é a espada da Verdade.
Firo, mas salvo... Prostro e desbarato,
Mas consólo... Subverto, mas resgato...
E, sendo a Morte, sou a Liberdade.»
_O INCONSCIENTE_
O espectro familiar que anda comigo,
Sem que podesse ainda ver-lhe o rosto,
Que umas vezes encaro com desgosto
E outras muitas ancioso espreito e sigo,
É um espectro mudo, grave, antigo,
Que parece a conversas mal disposto...
Ante esse vulto ascetico e composto
Mil vezes abro a bôca... e nada digo.
Só uma vez ousei interrogal-o:
--«Quem és (lhe perguntei com grande abalo),
Fantasma a quem odeio e a quem amo?
--Teus irmãos (respondeu), os vãos humanos,
Chamam-me Deus, ha mais de dez mil annos...
Mas eu por mim não sei como me chamo...
_CONSULTA_

Chamei em volta do meu frio leito
As memorias melhores de outra idade,
Fórmas vagas, que ás noites, com piedade,
Se inclinam, a espreitar, sobre o meu peito...
E disse-lhes:--No mundo immenso e estreito

Ter nascido? dizei-mo com verdade,
Pobres memorias que eu ao seio estreito...
Mas ellas perturbaram-se--coitadas!
E empalideceram, contristadas,

_ESPIRITUALISMO_

Como um vento de morte e de ruina,
A Duvida soprou sobre o universo.
Fez-se noite de subito, immerso
O mundo em densa e algida neblina.
Nem astro já reluz, nem ave trina,
Nem flôr surri no seu aéreo berço.
Um veneno sutil, vago, disperso,
Empeçonhou a criação divina.
E, no meio da noite monstruosa,
Do silencio glacial, que paira e estende
O seu sudario, donde a morte pende,
Só uma flôr humilde, misteriosa,
Como um vago protesto da existencia,
Desabroxa no fundo da consciencia.

Dorme entre os gelos, flôr immaculada!
Luta, pedindo um ultimo clarão
Aos soes que ruem pela immensidão,
Arrastando uma aureola apagada...
Em vão! Do abismo a bôca escancarada
Chama por ti na gélida amplidão...
Sobe do poço eterno, em turbilhão,
A treva primitiva conglobada...
Tu morrerás tambem. Um ai supremo,
Na noite universal que envolve o mundo,
Ha de echoar, e teu perfume extremo
No vacuo eterno se esvahirá disperso,
Como o alento final dum moribundo,
Como o ultimo suspiro do Universo.
_ANIMA MEA_
Estava a Morte ali, em pé, diante,
Sim, diante de mim, como serpente,
Que dormisse na estrada e de repente
Se erguesse sob os pés do caminhante.
Era de vêr a funebre bacchante!
Que torvo olhar! que gesto de demente!
E eu disse-lhe: «Que buscas, impudente,
Loba faminta, pelo mundo errante?»
--Não temas, respondeu (e uma ironia
Sinistramente estranha, atroz e calma,
Lhe torceu cruelmente a bôca fria).
Eu não busco o teu corpo... Era um tropheu
Glorioso demais... Busco a tua alma--
Respondi-lhe: «A minha alma já morreu!»
_ESTOICISMO_
Tu que não crês, nem amas, nem esperas,
Espirito de eterna negação,
Teu halito gelou-me o coração
E destroçou-me da alma as primaveras...
Atravessando regiões austeras,
Cheias de noite e cava escuridão,
Como num sonho mau, só oiço um não
Que eternamente echôa entre as esféras...
--Porque suspiras, porque te lamentas,
Cobarde coração? Debalde intentas
Oppôr á Sorte a queixa do egoísmo...
Deixa aos timidos, deixa aos sonhadores
A esperança van, seus vãos fulgores...
Sabe tu encarar sereno o abismo!

Tomei tambem logar na impia meza,

Ali, onde o mar quebra, num cachão
Rugidor e monotono, e os ventos
Erguem pelo areal os seus lamentos,
Ali se hade enterrar meu coração.
Queimem-no os sóes da adusta solidão,
Na fornalha do estio, em dias lentos;
Depois, no hinverno, os sopros violentos
Lhe revolvam em torno o árido chão...
Até que se desfaça e, já tornado
Em impalpavel pó, seja levado
Nos turbilhões que o vento levantar...
Com suas lutas, seu cançado anceio,
Seu louco amor, dissolva-se no seio
Desse infecundo, desse amargo mar!

O Espirito que enche a solidão,
E só a propria voz na immensidão
Fatigada nos volve... e não te achamos!
Ceus e terra, clamai, aonde? aonde?--
Mas o Espirito antigo só responde,
Em tom de grande tedio e de pezar:
--Não vos queixeis, ó filhos da anciedade,
Que eu mesmo, desde toda a eternidade,
Tambem me busco a mim... sem me encontrar!

Muito longe daqui, nem eu sei quando,
Nem onde era esse mundo, em que eu vivia...
Mas tão longe... que até dizer podia
Que emquanto lá andei, andei sonhando...
Porque era tudo ali aério e brando,
E lucida a existencia amanhecia...
E eu... leve como a luz... até que um dia
Um vento me tomou, e vim rolando...
Cahi e achei-me, de repente, involto
Em luta bestial, na arena féra,
Onde um bruto furor bramia solto.
Senti um monstro em mim nascer nessa hora,
E achei-me de improviso feito féra...
--É assim que rujo entre leões agora!
_NÍRVANA_
Para além do Universo luminoso,
Cheio de fórmas, de rumor, de lida,
De forças, de desejos e de vida,
Abre-se como um vácuo tenebroso.
A onda desse mar tumultuoso
Vem ali expirar, esmaecida...
Numa immobilidade indefinida
Termina ali o ser, inerte, ocioso...
E quando o pensamento, assim absorto,
Emerge a custo desse mundo morto
E torna a olhar as coisas naturaes,
Á bella luz da vida, ampla, infinita,
Só vê com tédio, em tudo quanto fita,
A illusão e o vasio universaes.

_Renascença_, os Sonetos do sr. Anthero de Quental foram recebidos pelos
entendedores por fórma tal, que julgamos fazer uma coisa agradavel aos
assignantes daquelles jornaes, e ao publico em geral colligindo agora,
no primeiro volume da Bibliotheca da Renascença, aquelles Sonetos,
juntamente com alguns outros, do mesmo caracter e estilo, dispersos por
varias publicações, e pondo desta fórma ao alcance dos apreciadores a
serie completa dos Sonetos philosophicos até hoje produzidos pelo grande
poeta das _Odes Modernas_, depois do apparecimento da segunda edição
deste livro.
