Oh! Musa sacripanta dos Vardascas,
Onzeneira, bulhenta, peralvilha,
Bachante de bordeis, deusa de tascas,
De Momo e da Discordia a vêsga filha,
Empresta-me o teu estro, põe-me em lascas,
Regateira infernal, vil farroupilha,
A mente, e, qual fusil na pederneira,
Accende-m'a com chamma de fogueira.
II
Preciso de fatal inspiração,
Não bebida na fonte de Hypocrene,
Como o enfermo que em grave indigestão
Carece vomitar, ou tomar séne.
Acode-me com o estro de febrão,
Que delire em linguagem torpe, infrene.
Oh! Musa, qual Medéa ardendo em furias,
Incita-me ás poeticas luxurias.

Dá-me influxo mordaz, horripilante,
Como outr'ora abrasou um Aretino,
Esse fogo infernal, que teve o Dante,
Ou a graça sequer de Tolentino;
Mas tu, oh! Musa reles, e farçante,
Não me entruges o plectro de mofino;
Se me negas o dar-me engenho e arte,
Nem mais um decilitro hei de pagar-te.
IV
E seja o canto meu feroz, medonho,
Que similhe ao uivar do voraz lobo,
Ao crocitar dos corvos; enfadonho
Como o sorrir alvar de informe bobo,
Que a tratar o assumpto, que proponho,
Requer-se petulancia, e tal arroubo,
Que o leitor, deliquido n'um desmaio,
Me pareça assombrado pelo raio:

--N'um domingo de março, pela estrada
Que de Arroyos conduz á Panasqueira,
Vão magotes de povo de ranchada
A provar o bom vinho, e a petisqueira
Do louro peixe frito e da salada,
Que na _Perna de Pau_ a taberneira
Lhes prepara; e com litros, comesanas,
De lá voltam com grandes carraspanas.
VI
Já burbulham as arvores, e as flores
Engrinaldam os prados de Flora;
As aves gorgeando os seus amores
Alternam o chiar da triste nora.
Correm montes e valles caçadores
Co'as matilhas de cães, mas em má hora,
Que as pintadas perdizes e coelhos
Levam ventos nas azas, nos artelhos.

O dia estava brusco, e os pardaes
Chilreiam festejando o solsticio
Da vital primavera; nos curraes
Muge a vaca saudosa ao beneficio
Da pavêa; espirram os catharraes.
O povo é convidado p'ra um comicio,
Onde avido concorre p'ra tratar
D'uma ideia, que ha muito _anda no ar_.

Bôa gente de artistas, operarios,
Crestada pelas lavas do trabalho,
Vivendo das migalhas dos salarios
Que do fisco escaparam; rebotalho
Condemnado a subir asp'ros calvarios,
Que busca naipe ser no vil baralho,
D'onde querem tirar valetes, reis,
E trumphar co'o direito só das leis.
IX
Vão anchos, vão alegres na esp'rança
D'um futuro feliz, que os seus tribunos
Lhes promettem de ha muito. Essa alliança
Da justiça e poder, fins opportunos
Que á força popular lhes affiança
O livral-os das unhas dos gatunos,
Que roubando a nação se fazem nobres,
Vampiros a chupar o sangue aos pobres.

É grande a multidão ali trazida:
Alguns por curiosos se conduzem,
A outros a cobiça mais convida,
Que muitos com promessas se reduzem;
E quantos com a mente prevenida
De utopias, que o animo seduzem,
Com a grata illusão de vir a ser
Povo e rei de si mesmo no poder.

Suspenso vê-se á porta da taberna
Um ramo de loureiro; mais em baixo
Por symbolo pintaram-lhe uma perna
E um letreiro:--«Bom vinho do Cartaxo,
Peixe frito, e as iscas á moderna»;
E de copo na mão vê se um borracho
Apontando p'ra a quinta, onde em devesas
Lá sob os parreiraes estão as mezas.
XII
A gente á porta embica n'um montão,
Inquieta formigando n'um bulicio,
Como em dia de roda ao Campeão
Concorre por esp'rar o beneficio
D'uma sorte feliz, d'um alegrão.
Assim acode ali, e no comicio
Apanha, triste sorte, muita chuva,
Muita parra, coitada, e pouca uva.

Escolhem d'entre a turda in-continente
Um quidam consid'rado dos mais doutos,
Que occupando o logar de presidente
Ao sentar-se salvou com tres arrotos;
E com voz mal toada, intermittente,
Vae fallando, e cuspindo perdigotos;
Assim impertigado estende a mão:
«Eu abro, meus senhores, a sessão.»
XIV
E logo sobre um banco alevantado
Um homem vocifera, gesticula,
Os ministros ataca, e de zangado,
Em verrina, que mais descamba em chula,
Invectiva o imposto, e o tratado
Que aprovára das côrtes a matula.
--Embora, oh! patria minha, luctes, arques;
Não consintas vender Lourenço Marques!

«São justas nossas queixas, continua
O fogoso orador: heis de soffrer
Um inepto governo, que pactua
Co'a deshonra, e que falta ao seu dever?
Que batalhas campaes dá pela rua
Acutilando o povo a seu prazer?
Abaixo ministerio tão funesto!
Assignae, cidadãos, este protesto.»
XVI
E logo se empoleira outro orador
Compondo o rosto alvar; e ancho de si
Exclama com prosapia:--«Salvador
Do rei, da patria, affirmo agora aqui,
Que só o meu partido bemfeitor
Vos trará f'licidade... Potosi
É seu, e tem credito bastante
P'ra sair, d'esta crise, triumphante.»
XVII
«Sou regenerador, eu digo-o ufano;
O bem do povo é sempre o nosso alvo;
Aborreço o governo que é tyranno.
Dos tributos, pranchadas sereis salvo;
Quem comigo votar não tema engano.»
Mas n'isto berra alguem:--«Oh seu papalvo,
Já todos conhecemos vossas manhas:
O povo não engole taes patranhas.»
XVIII
«É falso! não consinto se pretenda
Menoscabar quem tanto se acrisola;
Mormente o bom ministro da fazenda,
Que, macio nos tributos, não esfola.»
--«Fóra! fóra! seu traste d'encommenda!
Gritou o povoreo, este é granjola!»
E o sucio, por temer as consequencias,
Escondeu-se nas mudas reticencias.
XIX
--«Eu sou republicano cá de dentro!»
Disse um tal agarrando um pedregulho.
--Fóra, fóra!--clamaram lá do centro.
Crescera a vozearia e o barulho:
--«Ah! safa, seu canalha, que o desventro!
Já se calle, ou a boca lhe atafulho!
Lhe brada, faca em punho um vil fadista:
Acabemos com a raça realista.»

Tal quando ronca o mar em tempestade,
Revolvido por grande furacão,
E em montanhas de espuma corre, invade
Ainda a mais alt'rosa embarcação;
Ou quando no aduar em feridade
De assalto abrindo as garras o leão
Percorre a empolgar seu inimigo,
Assim o orador se viu em p'rigo.
XXI
Mas n'essa confusão o paroleiro
Se esgueirava, fugindo com prudencia;
A mesa assalta um lépido barbeiro,
Que sóbe desde logo á presidencia.
Muitos gritam:--«Os reis custam dinheiro
Que sae dos nossos bolsos; é d'urgencia
Acclamarmos da plebe a sob'rania.»
E de vez foi crescendo a gritaria.
XXII
--«A palavra! a palavra, cidadão!»
Todos pedem, mas logo o presidente
Tocava a campainha, que o tacão
Lhe impede ser ouvido d'essa gente.
--«Ordem, ordem!... silencio! á votação
Vou propor, se o club m'o consente,
Artigos do contrato federal,
Que abula a realeza em Portugal.
XXIII
Que futuro medonho nos aterra!..
Funccionarios, ministros, titulares
Absorvem e devoram nossa terra!
Tropeçamos ahi co'os militares
Sem termos nem sequer sombras de guerra,
E sustentamos, nós, os populares
Um _deficit_ a crescer, e os publicanos
Tributos a lançar todos os annos!
XXIV
E caem os partidos, sempre os mesmos
Do governo os mandões, a mesma escola;
O estado a soffrer graves tenesmos,
Só nos resta o pedirmos inda esmola;
A fazenda consome-se em torresmos,
E vâmos n'um recúo-caranguejola;
Somos ricos e grandes de comedia.
A triste bancarota alguem impede-a?
XXV
O supremo poder nas mãos d'um homem,
Que póde ser um tolo, ou um tyranno!
A historia dos reis, que os tempos somem,
Consultae, e tereis o desengano.
Providencias energicas se tomem
Contra o nosso porvir, e o grave damno
Que os despostas causaram a seus povos;
Meus principios são justos, e são novos.
XXVI
É um rei liberal, como é a pella
Na mão d'um jogador; do ministerio
Espera para a rubríca a chancella
E faz o que lhe dizem, sem criterio
Se a coisa é de momento ou bagatella;
Pois se quer governar, sem refrigerio
Dos partidos depostos, soffre assomos,
Qual juiz de arraial co'os seus mordomos;
XXVII
Sempre ás cristas, e sempre engalfinhados,
Cubiçando os poleiros das nações,
De ministros, de pares, deputados,
De camaras, de empregos; ambições
Porque morrem de amor e de cuidados,
Não lh'importam... (que grandes maganões!)
As venturas do povo... em palavrorios,
Sobem, descem com vivas, foguetorios.
XXVIII
Portugal anda ha muito n'estas crises;
Na terrivel pressão de tantas mós,
Vae moendo farinha p'ra os felizes
Que contentes lhe cantam--_Venha a nós_!
Mas se um dia a revolta alçar a voz
Em delirios cruentos, nos paizes
Onde endémica lavra a _devorite_,
É p'ra logo applicar-lhe dynamite.»
XXIX
«Cidadão, vou entrar n'esta palestra
E mostrar-vos, que a natureza é sabia:
O cortiço é communa, a abelha mestra
De governo perfeito a ideia acaba-a.
Economica, vêde, não sequestra
Com tributos, ardis, com manha e labia
Do seu povo a uberosa dotação;
Aprendei o que ha bom n'esta lição.»
XXX
--«Bravo, _sô_ Zé Mathias... é bem dito!
O rei é um chupista... e apoiado...
Diz elle que é divino... é um maldito,
Que as rendas dizimando vae do Estado.»
Com palmas um cantava o pirolito,
E outro com a banza bate o fado.
--«Ordem, ordem! berrava o presidente;
Assignem o protesto, que é urgente.»
XXXI
«Se em nascimento e morte são iguaes
Os homens, o que importam distincções?
Porventura tem rei os animaes,
Duques, condes, marquezes e barões?
Tem ministros, soldados, generaes?
Um thesouro com praga d'inscripções?
Ha fórma de governo, que reuna
Maiores bens, do que a provida communa!
XXXII
Silencio... Não tem ricos, não tem nobres;
Permitte a cada um o que é preciso.
Portugal, é mister, que tu recobres
Teus foros sociaes, sem prejuizo
Dos que nascem... nem haja humildes, pobres;
Sejam nossos brazões: honra, juizo;
A terra fique livre, os bens communs,
E p'ra todos acabem os jejuns.
XXXIII
Bem nos basta aturar o rei do dia,
Que d'inverno a soslaio nos visita,
E de verão nos abrasa em calmaria.
Todo o rei é verdugo e parasita,
Que as entranhas do povo, qual harpia,
Molesta d'extorsões, opprime, irrita;
Por este decilitro vos protesto
Que o governo do rei é o mais funesto.
XXXIV
Vêde desgraça tanta... esses pedintes,
Co'os filhinhos ao collo as tristes mães,
E nós d'essas lamurias sendo ouvintes
Sem ter para lhes dar soccorro e pães;
Da miseria chegaram aos requintes
Que os ossos vão roendo como cães
E os ministros reunem na Ajuda
A pedir á nação que lhes acuda.
XXXV
Eu vos juro, valentes patriotas
Que buscaes alluir a monarchia,
Que havemos de enforcar os agiotas
E aos ricos... oh! que grande montaria.»
--«Muito bem! bravo! viva!» Entre risotas
Festejavam do povo a sob'rania,
E todos entoando a _Marselhesa_
Bradaram:--«Bota abaixo a realesa.»
XXXVI
«A republica só, heroica e pura
Sem esses comilões e sem tributos,
É governo, que aos povos dá ventura.
Vêde gregos, romanos, Solons, Brutos
Que varões de coragem, de lizura!»
--«Ó _sô_ Zé, se fallou agora em brutos,
Disse um d'elles, entendo em cortezia
Que pedisse licença á companhia.»
XXXVII
--«Tenho odio fatal, e tão profundo,
Aos reis todos, e á sua parentella,
Que juntando-me aquelles, que ha no mundo,
Eu guisára uma farta cabidela,
Ou então do oceano bem no fundo
Armava-lhe um tremalho, uma esparrella;
E se fossem tomar banhos no mar
Apanhava-os, e punha-os a escalar.»
XXXVIII
--«Em peitos lusitanos entrar póde
O desamor da patria! e assim quereis
Como uma carga vil, que se sacode
D'esta terra expulsar os nossos reis?!
Se a protecção de Deus vos não acode
Como outr'ora em Ourique, inda vereis
Este paiz mimoso dos heroes
No mundo não valer dois caracoes.
XXXIX
Portugal, que entre todas as nações
Se distingue fiel á dynastia!
Que nobre de proezas, galardões,
No mundo inteiro houvera primasia!
Ha de hoje off'recer os seus brazões
Aos sonhos d'esta vã democracia,
Que elege e acclama por soberano
Este, aquelle, aquell'outro, um tal cicrano?!»

--«Fóra, fóra! acabem dynastias,
Não queremos sustentar com sacrificios
Quem vive dos tributos, das sangrias
Que soffremos por tantos malificios;
Acabem agourentas monarchias!
Não queremos aturar mais supplicios:
A forma de governo mais humana
É sem duvida a que é republicana.»
XLI
--«Ah! senhor, por um instante me escutae:
Não posso concordar com tal aviso!
Um mau rei é verdugo, mas é pae
O que governa em paz, e com juizo:
O arbitrio de muitos sempre cae
Na desordem fatal, em prejuizo
Da nação que mais cedo, ou que mais tarde
Soffre a guerra civil, torpe e covarde.»
XLII
E logo d'improviso uma matrona
De face bronzeada, enorme buço,
Gritou o--Viva a _plebia_, que desthrona
Os _reizes_, que padecem mau influxo;
É mettel-os a todos n'uma fona,
Assim o declaro sem rebuço.
É deitarmos a terra esses colossos:
Eu sou republicana até aos ossos.
XLIII
«Eu cá sem ser _pronostica_, arrenego
Do tempo, que para os _reizes_ vae bicudo;
Mas elles teem olhar tão peticego,
Que só vêem as cousas por canudo.
Pois eu a governar punha no prego
As colonias, nação, vendia tudo...
E _vispiré_, Ignacia! co'a aragem
_Tingava-me_... adeusinho... boa viagem.
XLIV
A rainha, que grande presumida!
Recostada no caleche toda _aquella_,
E eu cá p'ra ganhar a triste vida
Giro em trocas, baldrocas d'uma adella,
Eu se andasse como ella, bem comida,
Era sucia, e só qu'ria dar á trella:
Onde houvesse uma tasca de bom vinho
Aos amigos pagava um _martellinho_.
XLV
A communa... oh! que grande regaleza!
Tudo egual, e ninguem soffrendo fome!
Descongela-se a neve da pobreza,
O rico diz ao pobre:--Pegue, tome!--
Repartem entre si toda a riqueza,
O trabalho a ninguem rala e consome,
Cada um faz e diz o que quizer,
E troca de marido e de mulher!
XLVI
Co'os _demos!_ venha a hora bemfazeja
Em que gose o mudar meu duro fado;
De andador posto á porta d'uma egreja
Eu visse o meu João ser deputado.
É bem triste o viver só da bandeja,
Pedir p'ra o purgatorio, e ser penado,
E clamar ao alvor d'um triste dia:
Levanta-te, João... _vae p'ra a bacia_!.»
XLVII
Já roucos de gritar com vozes graves,
A republica acclamam grandes vivas;
Nos bosques se escondiam meigas aves,
Dos prados, pela bulha, fugitivas,
E as fontes seus murmurios tão suaves
Suspendem entretanto por esquivas;
Só ao longe, no auge do sussurro,
Coáxa a triste rã, orneja o burro.
XLVIII
--«Palavra _seu aquelle_, eu tambem fallo,
Olé se fallo, eu cá sou cidadão...
Escusam de gritar, que me não callo...
Não me empurrem, já disse... qual pifão!
O rei no seu governo, é como um gallo,
Como um gallo... oh! que grande reinação...
Fóra co'a brincadeira... viva o rei!
Oh! _dominus vobiscum, agnus Dei_.
XLIX
Em tempos mais antigos, qual o anno
Me não lembra, nem d'isso agora trato...
Tivemos um pastor republicano.
Que pandigo! o tal luso, o Viriato!
E D. Fuas Ropinho, que magano...
O rei dos valentões, Prior do Crato!
Que façanhas fizeram! que prodigio
Armados de cacete e bonet frigio!»

--«Presidente, este typo surdo mudo
Por signaes o seu voto ora pretende
Declarar; é teimoso, é cabeçudo.»
--«De mimicas aqui ninguem entende!
Subjuguem-n'o, e ferrem-lhe um cascudo
E ponham-o lá fóra, que se emende.»
--Egualdade, onde estás!--protesta um gebo;
--Eu tambem, diz um gago, _a não_ concebo.--

E n'isto no casaco a assadeira
Lhe fincara deveras as fateixas;
Acode a socorrel-o a taberneira,
Duas _taponas_ lhe ferra nas bochechas.
O peixe estremeceu na frigideira,
A cabeça escondendo nas ventrechas,
E o sacrista berrando pela guarda
Acode o regedor n'esta bernarda.

Apitam, correm cabos de policia;
O povo prorompeu n'uma assuada.
O regedor procura com pericia
Acalmar o tumulto, mas baldada
Lhe fôra a diligencia, se a milicia
Lhe não desse a provar do _peixe-espada_;
Então o taberneiro por esperto
Começou a gritar: «a tropa é perto!»

Sentira-se uma bulha retumbante,
E uma grita de vozes, arremedo
De rufar de tambor, e mal toante
Um pifaro tocar...--É o Macedo!--
E ei-los a correr no mesmo instante
Como um bando de gamos, que de medo
Fugira ao caçador, e cada qual
Vae bradando:--ahi vem a _mancipal_!--

Esgueiram-se em differentes direcções,
Deitando pelo chão mesas e bancos;
É batalha campal de provisões,
De azeitonas e peixe, queijos brancos;
Quebraram-se as canecas, canjirões,
Em quanto vão saltando p'los barrancos;
E assim se escaparam por milagre,
Como foi na campanha do _vinagre_!

Fôra o caso que á tarde o rapasio,
As lides de Mavorte simulando,
Em panellas ferira som bravio,
A berrar pela estrada pelejando.
A tal bulha sentiram calefrio
Os valentes, e foram-se safando;
E assim com este logro se destroça
O _meeting_, e soffrendo cruel troça.

Entrementes debanda a philarmonica,
Allugada p'lo grande directorio,
Que devêra tocar a marcha sonica
Ao romper do comicio o grão vivorio;
É que o mestre afinára a diatonica
Aos _hurrahs_ e estallar do foguetorio;
Mas temendo os bêmoes entram em lucta,
Apressou o andante co'a batuta.
LVII
É noute; dorme tudo, e o mesmo gaz
Nos bicos dos candieiros em Lisboa;
E a lua sorrateira, e contumaz,
Espevita o morrão sobre a patroa:
--«Inda bem; a cidade está em paz!
Disse ella,--foi ligeira a macacôa.
Adeus té ámanhã, que torne a ver-vos;
Vou tomar chá de tilia p'ra os meus nervos.»
LVIII
Eu tambem a dormir, em pesadellos,
Vira trasgos e démos ás parelhas
A subir-me nos tufos dos cabellos,
Em enxames zumbindo, quaes abelhas:
Acordei; era a musa dos tarellos
Delambida a puchar-me p'las orelhas,
A dizer-me:--«Anda, vem matar-me o _bicho_;
Ensinei-te a chilrar como um cochicho!»
