Meren yllä on pimeät, raskaat varjot: pilvien varjot.
Ranta on paennut viileään, siniseen sumuun.
Laiva on nostanut purjeet yöhön
ja liukuu etenemättä —
Jostakin läikkyy äkkiä valoa veteen,
outoa, kirkasta valoa.
Meri liikkuu aalloitta yössä.
Meri on ihana maailma ääriä vailla.
Valo on sammunut.
Purjeet ovat sulaneet pilvien varjoon.
Varjo on hajonnut pimeään mereen.
Kaikki on yhtä.
Yössä on ainoa kuuluva ääni:
— Salaisiin kiviin särkyvä vesi.
ALAKULOINEN MERI
Oot harmaa, aalloin väsynein
sa tumman pilven alla hiljaa vaellat!
Mun, ihmisen,
on hyvä levätä sun rannallas,
kun viilee tuuli unhoituksen levon lupaa.
Oot harmaa, kaiken elämän,
sen murheen, epätoivon pyyhkii aaltos pois.
Ja rannoiltas
ja minut, ihmisen,
kun hiljaa vaellat
sa tumman pilven alla aalloin väsynein.
KAIPAUS
On kaipaus vienyt linnun rannalta
ulapan tuuleen viileään.
Ovat tomuinen maa ja ranta kaukana
häipyneet meren hämärään.
On linnun sydäntä syönyt ikävä
ulapan lintujen vapauteen,
missä punaiset karit nousevat merestä
satoine lokkien pesineen.
On kaipaus vienyt linnun rannalta
ulapan aamuun valkeaan,
missä auringon noustessa merestä kirkkaana
unohtaa tomuisen, kuuman maan —
MERI YÖLLÄ
Meri yöllä on kuultavan kirkas,
sen vesi on valkoinen,
ja lokkien kaartuvat siivet
ei varjosta pintaa sen.
On tiirojen kirkkaus jäänyt
myös rannoille kuolemaan.
Vain kaukaista kohinaa kuuluu:
meri puhelee unissaan,
ja huo'aten joskus syvään
se mainingin kohottaa,
mi aaveena edeten liukuu
veden pintaa valkeaa.
Nyt ylitse yöllisen meren,
veden vaiheilla valkean
käy kutsuva kuiskaus hiljaa
meren lempeän jumalan.
ONNELLINEN AAMU
Miten onnelliseen aamuun
meren saarella herätä voi!
Kuin vihreään kylpyyn kutsuin
meren aallot rannalla soi.
Ja lokkien helminauhaan
on tiirat yhtyneet.
Ne ensimmäisinä meressä
on aamulla kylpeneet.
Meren onnelliseen aamuun
kun vielä herätä vois!
Meren vedessä viheriässä
surut sairaat huuhtoa pois.
POLKU
POLKU
Sinä kuljet monia, leveitä teitä.
Joka tie vie jonkun ystävän luo.
Eräs kovin kapea, hämärä polku
sinut minun luokseni joskus tuo.
Eräs niityn ruohoon hukkuva polku,
jota tiellä kulkijat eivät nää,
joka sinulta myöskin helposti unhoon
kovin pitkiksi ajoiksi usein jää.
Sinä kuljet monia, leveitä teitä.
Minä turhaan polulla odotan.
Minä pelkään, rakkahin, huomaamatta
polun kokonaan umpeen ruohottuvan.

Sua päivät iltaan aattelen,

MAJA
Ma sydämestäni nyt majan teen
ja vien sen erämaahan kaukaiseen.
Sen kynnyspuulla istun odottain.
Tuo kaipuu kerran sinut majahain.
Ja takkatulta sulle iltaisin
ma vaalin onnellisin unelmin.
Sa tulet kerran, silmiis suutelen
ma silloin unet syväin metsien
ja vuorten etäisinä siintäväin
ja havun tuoksun, kukkain himmeäin.
Ma oman ikäväni suutelen
ja rakkauden suuren, avoimen
ja yksinkertaisen kuin erämaa,

KIRJE
Niin pitkän kirjeen kirjoitin
kuin oli ikäväin,
ja ajatuksin kuumeisin
ma odottamaan jäin.
Sa vihdoin muistat kirjoittaa:
Saan kirjeen ohuen.
Sen sanat mua viluttaa
kuin päivä tuulinen
tai linnun huuto suolta päin
tai ruutu ikkunan,
min jäisen lasin ääreen jäin
ma kädet helmahan.
JÄÄ HYVÄSTI, HYVÄÄ YÖTÄ
Jää hyvästi, hyvää yötä,
ma nukun sulta pois
ja väliltämme kaikki
kuin unhoitettu ois.

On monen käynyt niin.
Tie huipuilta vie aina
alas kuilun syvyyksiin.

Ja nukun pois, mut koskaan

ALAKULOINEN PÄIVÄ
On järvi kellanharmaa,
ja mustat pilvet kulkemaan
jo ovat väsyneet.
Ne riippuu järven yllä
kuin kummalliset varjot vaan
tai siivet väsyneet.
Ma askelteni ääntä
kuin joka hetki vavahdan
ja käännyn katsomaan.
Vain jalkojeni alla
ma taitoin kaislan ruskean.
Jään sitä katsomaan —
Niin alakuloisena
ma rantaa pitkin kävelen
ja jotain ikävöin —
Kuin mustat pilvet raskas
on yksinäisyys päivien.
— Pois täältä ikävöin.
VARJOLAULU
Jäät valon lämpöön niinkuin lintu jää,
kun varjossa jo viileyttä on,
ja enää varjon pimentoon ei nää
sun silmäs, huikaisemat auringon.
Vain kuumaan valoon yli maisemain
ne tuijottavat kauas, ohi mun.
Oon varjossa ma pieni kasvi vain,
ja silmäis valosta ma huikaistun.
Jäät kauas valoon, minä varjoon jään,
ja lehdet sulkee minut pimentoon.
Ma kylmään heinään painan raskaan pään,
sa lennät niinkuin lintu aurinkoon.
MURHE
Voi, että kätes lämmön vangita ma voisin
kuin pienen linnun kylmään kätehein!
Ma silloin hiljaisesti onnellinen oisin,
ja katkeruus ei nousis huulillein.
Voi, että askeltesi kaiku korvistani
ei koskaan sammuis kuulumattomiin:
Sa silloin kulkisit kuin aina rinnallani,
ja murheeni mun sulais kyyneliin.
Voi, että onnellinen muisto hyvyytesi
ois suurempi kuin mykkä tuska tää:
kun toisiin silmiin hukkuu katsehesi
ja minuun enää silmäs eivät nää —
MUSTA TAUTI

I.
Pian sammuu kaikki lyhdyt
teehuoneen valkean —
Ma joka ilta turhaan
sua täällä odotan.
Taa silkkiviuhkan pääni
ma painan itkevän —
Kuu Jykou-virran ylle
on noussut vihreän.
Tuon virran taakse tiedän
sun luotain paenneen —
Ma sieltä, armas, toivon
sun onnen löytäneen.
Nurkassa yksin täällä
teehuoneen valkean
ma yhä sentään vuotan
sun kerran palaavan.
II.
Kun nauroin ja leikin ja tanssin,
sinä istuit synkkänä vain —
Sinä vihaa siitä kannoit
ja epäilit rakkauttain.
Minä sammutin ilon ja naurun,
kun, armas, tahdoit niin —
Nyt joka ilta itken
ma itseni nukuksiin.

ja kukkaset kuolee, varjo

KUIN KUOLINPAARIEN LAKANAT
Kuin kuolinpaarien lakanat
niin olivat kasvosi valkeat
ja liikkumattomat.
Kuin kuolinpaarien vierellä
minä istuin kädet ristissä
ja tahdoin itkeä —
Vaan silmät kuivina tuijotin
sua suuressa tuskassa silmihin
ja kauhusta vapisin.
Miks ovat kasvosi kalpeat
ja silmäs kuolonsairahat
— jos vielä rakastat?
MUSTA TAUTI
Mun sydäntäni musta tauti syö:
sun silmissäsi vieraat silmät nään.
On kuollut rakkautes minuhun.
Ma kivistävään epätoivoon jään.
Sa kuulet sanani ja kuitenkin
jo tuokiossa kaiken unohdat.
Tai ehkä kuunnellut et ollenkaan,
— minussa toista jo kai rakastat.
Sa vanhaa lemmittyäs jotakin
tai uutta muistat, — mua enää et.
Tai rakkautta vain sa rakastat,
vain lemmen nautinnosta suutelet.
Mun sydäntäni musta tauti syö,
mua tuska katsoo silmin verisin,
ja epätoivo lankee ylleni:
sinua itseäs ma rakastin.
PIMEÄ MERI
Minä olen pimeä meri,
kylmä ja yksin ihan.
Lyö rannoilla musta veri
epäluulon ja vihan.
Olen ulapan pitkän ja aavan
pian jääksi hyytyvä vesi.
Löi rintaani mustan haavan
sinun julma rakkautesi.
YSTÄVILLE
Te menkää luotani kaikki pois,
te, joita rakastan!
On niinkuin kätenne kuolleet ois,
kun niitä puserran.
En silmäinne kalvossa katsetta nää,
kun luotte ne minuhun.
Epäluulon tappava käärmeenpää
on tunkenut sieluuni mun.
Te menkää luotani kaikki pois!
Minut vaikka kirotkaa.
Minun helpompi etäällä teistä ois
taas — teitä rakastaa.
KUOLLUT SYDÄN
Meren laulua syvästi onnekasta,
jota kuulin aina ma korvissani,
olen lakannut kokonaan kuulemasta.
— Meren kuva on sumennut sielustani.
Olen polttanut tuhkaksi herkimpäni:
Kuvat, äänet kirkkaat on himmenneitä.
Kivitaakkana kuollutta sydäntäni
nyt kuljetan pimeitä, pitkiä teitä.
Voi enää vain unessa kipeässä
meri joskus laulaa mun korvissani —
Minä itkuuni herään ja pimeässä
kuin mieletön parahdan vuoteellani.
SA LIIAN MYÖHÄÄN TULIT TAKAISIN —
En ole tyttö, jota rakastit.
Vuossata siitä vierinyt jo lie,
kun hänest' erkanit.
Sa liian myöhään tulit takaisin —
Miks katsot noin kuin tuntisit
sa minut kuitenkin?
Ma olen vieras. Miksi katsot noin?
Hän kuollut on, ja muistolleen
ma ammoin rauhan soin.

SYVYYDESTÄ
LAIVA
Musta laiva vettä joluu.
Lintu huutaa ulapalla.
Laivan yllä pitkät pilvet,
syksyn raskas vesi alla.
Joku tulee — Joku lähtee —
Laiva, kohtaloita kannat.
Kohoo veden kahtapuolta
murheen pitkät kaislarannat.
Joku muistaa, joku itkee —
Kaikki rannat jäivät taaksi.
Hiljaa joluu ulapalle
kohtaloiden musta haaksi.
Aukee aamu laivan eteen:
Laivan lasiruudut kiiltää.
Joku itkee, joku toivoo —
Oudot linnut vettä viiltää.
KAUPUNKI
I.
Musta liikkumaton virta,
kylmä kivisilta yllä.
Hullu kaipuu puristaa mua
painajaisen syleilyllä.
Sillan täyttää tulvehtiva,
aina uusi ihmishumu.
Yksinäisen vaeltajan
kiertää sankka, sairas sumu —
II.
Yökahvilan lamput kiiltää,
ja huulien punattujen
kova nauru ilmaa viiltää,
ja lasien särkyminen.
Joka yö sen lamput kiiltää,
vain ihmiset vaihtuvat sen.
Sama hullu nauru viiltää,
ja sama on — särkyminen.
III.
Talot rinnatusten
ventovieraat ovat.
Taloin yllä tähdet
armottoman kovat:
Heikko sortuu siellä
vahvan tahdon alle.
Valta elää suotu
vain on sortajalle.
Kovat kivipiiput
siellä yksin tohti
nostaa päätään, nousta
korkeutta kohti.
ILTA
Kylmä ja kostea ilta.
Sumu on kiertänyt talot.
Kaikilla väsyneet silmät
niinkuin himmeät valot.
Pakenen etäälle muista
ainoan totuuden eteen:
Sammuvat hyvyys ja lämpö
sumuna jäiseen veteen.
Häviää tyhjäksi kaikki —
Selvinkin ajatus hajoo.
Kosteaan, hämärään kuiluun
elämän kauneus vajoo.
Elänkö? Tuijotan sumuun
hämärän tyhjällä tiellä.
Katselen sokeiksi silmät:
Mitään en näe ma siellä.
SYYSSADE
Sinä tunnetko: oudosti levoton
koko ilma ruutujen takana on!
Puun lehdet varjoina lepattaa,
joku ruutuun kolmasti kolkuttaa.
Sade puistoon huutona kohisee.
Joku ruudun takana ääntelee —
Olet yksin yössä niin avuton,
kuin lehdet kylminä kätesi on.
Joku hiipii ympäri huonettas,
joku toinen on sinun huoneessas.
Valo lamppusi sammuu lehahtain —
Se sammuiko ilmanvedosta vain?
Kuka tähtesi näin on levoton?
Kenen ajatus luonasi yössä on?
Vai tyhjyyskö vain luo varjojaan
— sinut saartaen yöhön kauhullaan.
KAUHU
Ilma ei liiku ja vaiti on puistot.
Talojen yllä on jäätynyttä sauhua.
Kiertelen ilotonna kaupungin katuja,
pakenen vierasta, nimetöntä kauhua.
Kadut on tyhjät ja ystävät poissa,
vai lienenkö itse jo kuuro ja sokea?
Kankea jähmetys jäsenet hyytää,
— elämää saanko enää koskaan ma kokea.
Kuljenko koskaan enää näkevin silmin?
Tunnenko rakkauden tuskaa ja riemua?
Sydän on hyytynyt julmasta kauhusta:
— Kuoleman armoton virta Jo vie mua.
KUUTAMO KAUPUNGISSA
Kuun valkean juovan liukuvan
yli märän kadun nään
läpi huurusta himmeän ikkunan
katuvaunuun kiitävään.
Taas hajoo kalpea valo tuo
katulampun paisteeseen.
Noin sielusta kaiken herkän juo
kadun kuume verkalleen —
SYVYYDESTÄ
Mun sydäntäni kaikki äänet yössä kiertävät
kuin petolinnut avutonta, varmaa saalistaan.
Mua painaa varjot siipien, ja kaikki nokillaan
ne sydämeni paikallensa veriin iskevät.
Voi, kaikki äänet valittaa ja syyttää jotakin —
Mun nimeäni joku huutaa, mua herjaten.
Niin kamalasti viiltää nauru epätoivoisten,
ja kaikki särkyy, hukkuu viimein avunhuutoihin.
Ma tunnen, mistä syvyyksistä äänet nousevat,
ja tiedän: liian tuskallista kaikki Joskus on.
Mut lohduttamaan ketään olen aivan avuton,
mun käteni on sidotut ja kylmät, kankeat.
Ja huuliltani lohdutuksen sanat säikkyen
pois pakenee kuin linnut luota meren jäätyneen.

LUMISADE

sielusta kipeä taakka.
Putoilee viileää lunta
sieluni pohjalle saakka.
Ihmisten silmistä katsoo
kuin lapsi: heräävä hyvyys,
arka ja uusi rakkaus,
kirkkaiden vesien syvyys —
AKVARELLI
Rannalla helisi jäiset kaislat.
Sininen hämärä jäätä hiipi.
Taivaan reunalla kapea pilvi
niinkuin irtireväisty siipi.
Siniseen hämärään rannat hajoo.
Luminen järvi on autio, aava.
Taivaan reunalla vielä on ruskon
ohut, heikosti punerva haava.
UUSI KEVÄT
On niinkuin lävitse pilvien
jo auringon nähdä vois,
ja pisarat takana ruutujen
kuin valosta raskaat ois.
Jo lentää lokit valkeat
yli sataman jäisen veen.
Yön, kuoleman raskaat ulapat
nyt aukee kirkkauteen.
Ja ihme: kivessä sydämen
kipu ihana liikahtaa,
kun siivet kuolleen kaipauksen
taas lentoon aukeaa.
AAMU
Aamu kohoo niinkuin lintu ylle kaupungin,
jäisen meren kirkkauden tuoden,
ohuin, häikäisevän valkein lentimin
kuvaisensa joka ruutuun luoden.
Sieluhuni niinkuin ruutuun valo lankeaa
aamun linnun valko-lentimiltä.
Sairaat unet sielustani valo karkoittaa,
varjot säikähtyvät ympäriltä.
Herään aamuun onnellista päivää aavistain,
katson ulos hymyilevin huulin.
Valo välkkyy huoneessani, riemu sielussain.
Aamu lentää onnellisin tuulin.
KEVÄTHURMIO
Meri vapaa on. Jäät pirstaksi
lyö aallot nuorina maihin,
Ja reväissyt pois silmästään
on taivas harmaan kaihin.
Valo tulvehtii! Alas hajonneet
on ahtaan murheeni seinät.
Ja raunioon kevät kasvattaa
kuin hetkessä kukkivat heinät.
Nään esteettä. Miten kauas vain!
Ei katseeni rajoja tapaa:
On vallassain koko maailma,
olen niinkuin jumala vapaa!
Voi, kevät on minut huumannut!
Soi lauluna tulinen veri.
Olen ainakin hetken onnellinen
ja kesytön niinkuin meri.
Kevät kaikkien on! Vain elämää
ja naurua täyteen huoneet!
Mitä murheista, me olemme
jok' ainoa kevättä juoneet!
UUDESTISYNTYMINEN
Ma olin kuollut. Kylmään tomuhun
loit jumalhengen tavoin elonliekin.
Sua kiitän siitä, rakkautes sun
mun vaikka uusiin kärsimyksiin viekin.
Ma elän! Ah, kuin kuume ruumistain
mua vapisuttaa rakkaus ja kaipuu.
Kuin kasvi maasta valoon kurkottain
niin sydämeni puolehesi taipuu.
Ma mitä olen, olen kauttas sun.
Ma mitä näen, näen silmilläsi.
Sun voimas palaa veressäni mun.
Ma kannan povessani sydäntäsi —
PIENI LAULU
Olet kultaista valoa tulvillaan
kuin keväinen ilma vain!
Tulen niinkuin ihanaan puutarhaan
sinun luoksesi, armahain.
Olet niinkuin lämmin tuuli on
hyvä kukalle puutarhan.
Sen hengität kylmästä elohon,
näet lämpöösi aukeevan.
ONNELLINEN RAKKAUS
Sun silmistäsi onnelliset linnut lentävät.
On sydämesi niiden lämmin pesä.
Kun joskus niistä joku lentää olkapäälleni,
on ympärillä aurinkoinen kesä.
Sun äänes laulu onnellisen suruisasti soi —
On niin kuin meri laulais huuliltasi.
Kuin rannalle tois jalkoihini vesi vaahtoa
niin hyväilet mua hiljaa sanoillasi.
Sun kätesi on lempeät ja hyvät eläimet.
Ne joskus levänneet on povellani —
Ne unehen mun lapsen tavoin hiljaa uuvuttaa,
ma, onnellinen, nauran unessani.
YÖ NIITYLLÄ
Ma huulin lämmintä heinää
kuin joitakin kasvoja kosketan.
Ja sieraimissani tunnen
ma mullan väkevän huounnan.
Näin lähellä koskaan en ollut
ma elämän herkintä sykintää.
Yön tummuus metsistä valuu
ja vereeni kuumana leviää.
Joku lintu ääneti lentää.
— Mun on kuin se lentäisi sielussain.
Kukan lehtiä silmille sataa
ja valoa tähtien vaaleain.
VALKEA HÄMÄRÄ
ÄITI
Jos olen poissa, olet vierelläin,
sa seuraat teitäni mun silmin suruisin.
